• Champions League 2022/23 Draw and (R)

From Werner Pichler@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jun 7 14:08:43 2022
Second, and second-to-last season in the current setup. https://kassiesa.net/uefa/files/2021-24-uefa-club-competitions-scheme.png

Draw for Champions League Preliminary Round
    * = seeded team

    Semifinals (June 21, Reykjavík)

1 FCI Levadia (EST)* v Víkingur (ISL)
2 SP La Fiorita (SMR)* v Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND)

    Final (June 24, Reykjavík)

    Winner 2 v Winner 1

While Flora managed to be the first Estonian team in a European group
phase and managed to eke out a win against Partizan Belgrade and draw
twice against Anorthosis Famagusta, at the same time back in December
2021 they lost the Estonian title to their city rivals on the last matchday.

So it's Levadia who have the privilege to have to travel to Iceland for this honestly speaking rather pointless mini-tournament. But it's a one-time occasion, as Flora's achievements last year have made sure that the
Estonian League will be safely out of the Bottom Four.

Iceland on the other hand are still down there, but at least Víkingur (who also
won their title - their first since 1991 - on the last matchday) will be able to
    play on their home turf.

BTW La Fiorita are seeded because they qualified for Europe five years in a row, and even though they only got two draws out of those matches UEFA
really are quite generous with their participation prizes (0.500 club coefficient points just for being there).

Pointless? Not at all. Any one of these teams could go on to win the Champions League.

Of course, that's not the problem. But they could integrate these four teams into the normal
qualifying procedures (all four teams will continue to play on anyway, one in the CL and three in
the ECL) and save some valuable time, the schedule is cramped enough as it is.

    * = seeded team

Winners go to CLQ2, Losers go to ECLQ2.
The losers of the Maribor/Soligorsk and HJK/RFS ties will get a bye to ECLQ3.

FC Pyunik (ARM) v FC CFR Cluj (ROM)*
NK Maribor (SLO)* v FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk (BLR)
PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL)* v FK Sutjeska (MNE)

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH) v FC Sheriff (MDA)*
ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* v FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO)

Lech against Qarabağ probably the strongest tie. So far Qarabağ's qualifying record against Polish opposition has been impeccable (qualified three times, won 4, drew 1).

Another tough break for the Polish champions should they make it past Qarabağ. I guess Maccabi Haifa could be a banana peel for Olympiacos.

In the league path, I'm pretty sure both Midtjylland and Larnaca wanted that draw
and both Dynamo and Fenerbahçe didn't.

    Champions League Preliminary Round Semifinals
    * = seeded team
    Teams in CAPITALS go through

It might have been the longest day of the year, with sunset in Reykjavík just after midnight and sunrise
just before 3 a.m., but there was no trace of warm sunlight streaming into Víkingsvöllur stadium
as those four teams played their matches in cold and drizzling rain.

SP La Fiorita (SMR)* v INTER CLUB D'ESCALDES (AND) 1-2 (1-0)
    (Rinaldi 45'+2; Soldevila 55', 66')

La Fiorita scored the first goal of this year's Champions League, but it remains kind
of a usual story for Sammarinese clubs - unlike all the other minnows, who manage
upsets from time to time, they never quite get there.

BTW I kind of wonder what effect it will have on Andorran football that FC Andorra (owned
by Gerard Piqué, and for decades part of the Spanish league system) this year got promoted
to Segunda División for the first time in their history. But considering that they don't
have a single Andorran player in their squad, it probably won't change much.

FCI Levadia (EST)* v KS VÍKINGUR (ISL) 1-6 (1-3)
    (Beglarishvili 5' (pen); McLagan 10', K.M. Ingason 27', Sigurðsson 45'+1, Hansen 49',
    Guðjónsson 71', Magnússon 77')

Huh, so I guess Iceland really don't want to stay in the bottom four. And they probably also
dealt best with the conditions, being on home turf. A US Boy and a Dane were among
the Viking goalscorers, and Kristall Máni's (translates as Crystal Moon - Kristall has been
officially approved as an Icelandic boys' name since 2002, the internet tells me) goal
    was probably the nicest: https://gfycat.com/ordinarypeskycentipede

    Final (June 24, Reykjavík)

Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND) v KS Víkingur (ISL)

Weather's supposed to be a little better on Friday.

    Champions League Preliminary Round Final

Inter Club d'Escaldes (AND) v KS VÍKINGUR (ISL) 0-1 (0-0)
    (K.M. Ingason 68')

Indeed, lovely evening sun at 10 pm.
The match was surprisingly even with good chances on both sides, but Crystal Moon came
to the rescue when he headed in a cross by the substitute Karl Friðleifur Gunnarsson:
    https://gfycat.com/sparklingevergreenfiddlercrab

Víkingur will now play in CLQ1 against Malmö. The other three teams in the Preliminary Round
all move to the ECLQ2 Champions Path, which makes the whole thing rather pointless.
Inter Escaldes will be up against the loser of Pyunik/Cluj, Levadia against the loser of Malta's
Hibernians/Shamrock Rovers, and La Fiorita against the loser of Ballkani/Žalgiris.
After that, just two more rounds to the ECL group phase...

Champions League 1st Qualifying Round, 1st leg
    * = seeded team

    July 5

FC Pyunik (ARM) v FC CFR Cluj (ROM)* 0-0 (0-0)

In a poor match, Gabriel Debeljuh hit the crossbar in what was the best chance for the disappointing Romanian champions.

Malmö FF (SWE)* v KS Víkingur (ISL) 3-2 (2-1)
    (Olsson 16', Toivonen 42', Birmančević 84'; K.M. Ingason 38', Guðjónsson 90'+3;
Red Card: K.M. Ingason (Vík) 39')

Much more entertainment in this one. An early Viking goal had already been chalked off for offside before veteran left-back Martin Olsson gave Malmö the lead, both thanks to a massive deflection and Malmö captain Anders Christiansen's, ahem, brilliant dummy: https://gfycat.com/creativeoblongfoal Kristall Máni Ingason then took centre stage - within 10 minutes the 20-year-old
received a controversial yellow for a dive, scored the equaliser: https://gfycat.com/frailcleverhoneyeater and received a far more controversial second yellow for his subsequent shushing gesture towards the Swedish crowd. Terrible call by the Moldovan ref, really. Malmö immediately capitalized on their man advantage as Ola Toivonen, who has just turned 36, headed them in front again, and despite some good Icelandic bus-parking in the second half the Swedish champions scored their third after Víkingur's exhausted centre-back Halldór Smári Sigurðsson gave the ball away in front of his own box: https://gfycat.com/imperfectgianteuropeanfiresalamander Still, surprisingly, in stoppage time the Icelanders scored a goal that could change the complexion of the whole tie (and would have done so even more if AGR was still a thing) as Jonas Knudsen made a mess out of a long ball, his wayward header landed at the feet of Helgi Guðjónsson and the substitute striker got off a shot that took a
deflection off Lasse Nielsen and hobbled into the net: https://gfycat.com/hospitableunripeestuarinecrocodile

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL)* v FK Sutjeska (MNE) 2-0 (0-0)
    (Santana 74', Tissera 90'+1)

The Montenegrin underdogs held on for quite a while until two of Ludogorets's South Americans broke the deadlock - former Botafogo midfielder Alex Santana tapped in after a corner, and Argentine Matías Tissera finished the job in stoppage time.

KF Ballkani (KOS) v FK Žalgiris (LTU)* 1-1 (1-1)
    (Gripshi 15'; Buff 25')

With a shot from distance Albanian midfielder Nazmi Gripshi got the early goal for the Kosovar champions in their European debut, but Swiss globetrotter Oliver
Buff (before signing on in Lithuania he had played in the Malaysian Super League) headed in the equaliser from a corner.

The New Saints FC (WAL)* v Linfield FC (NIR) 1-0 (0-0)
    (Brobbel 57')

An even game between these two home nation champions was decided by Ryan Brobbel, a former youth international for Northern Ireland, who duped one Linfield defender and nutmegged another to squeeze in a shot at the far post.

KKS Lech Poznań (POL) v Qarabağ FK (AZE)* 1-0 (1-0)
    (Ishak 41')

In the most high-profile tie of this first qualification round, the Azeri champions had more of the game but it was the Polish ones who scored with their very first chance when Swedish striker Mikael Ishak tapped in a low cross by Portuguese right-back Joel Pereira.

Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL)* v Hibernians FC (MLT) 3-0 (2-0)
    (Finn 25', Watts 40', Gaffney 78')

Easy win for the the Rovers who are currently again sitting comfortably at the top of the League of Ireland Premier Division.

KF Shkupi (MKD) v Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB)* 3-0 (2-0)
    (Danfa 11', Adetunji 29', Chipolina 62' (og);
    Red Card: Margvelashvili (Shk) 54')

After last year's exploit, a bit of cold water on the Imps's hopes for this European season. Mamadou Danfa has one cap for Senegal and Sunday Adetunji one cap for Nigeria.

    July 6

FC Tobol (KAZ) v Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)* 0-0 (0-0)

Dull match. You'd think that this result favours the Hungarian champions, as the Kazakh teams usually rely on a strong performance at home.

HJK (FIN)* v FK RFS (LAT) 1-0 (1-0)
    (Martić 11')

Manuel Martić had fallen completely off my radar following his nondescript performances for St. Pölten and rather terrible ones for Rapid, but lo and behold there he was, early on punishing an atrocious back pass to score the only
    goal of the match.

    FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR)* v KÍ (FAR) 3-0 (2-0)
    (Boniface 11', 31', 58' (pen))

Two-times Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt have fallen a bit off the pace this season in this year's Eliteserien following the loss of almost all their marquee
players (Botheim, Berg, Lode, Bjørkan, Hauge, Zinckernagel...), but it was still
more than enough to do away with the Faroese champions from Klaksvík. 21-year- old Nigerian striker Victor Boniface got his hat trick with goals from a corner kick, a tap-in, and a penalty.

    F91 Diddeleng (LUX)* v KF Tirana (ALB) 1-0 (0-0)
(Hassan 71'; Red Cards: Kirch (Did) 54'; Limaj (Tir) 68')

Mohcine Hassan Nader, whose similarly named father once scored for Morocco at the 1994 World Cup, got the only goal of the match with a well-placed header.

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH) v FC Sheriff (MDA)* 0-0 (0-0)

Sheriff are a far cry from last season's team - stand-out players like Adama Traoré and Sebastién Thill left for Ferencváros and Hansa Rostock, respectively.
Shots on goal from each side: zero.

NK Maribor (SLO)* v FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk (BLR) 0-0 (0-0)

First Maribor match without Marcos Tavares since 2008. The Slovenians have since
renamed the West Stand of their Ljudski Vrt stadium in honour of the Brazilian.

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK)* v FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO) 0-0 (0-0)
    (Red Card: Kobakhidze (Bat) 42')

The 10-man Georgian champions also held on to the scoreless draw with surprising
    ease.

22 goals scored in 15 matches.
I guess this kind of results is to be expected in what's the first match of the season for most of these above teams.

    July 12

FK RFS (LAT) v HJK (FIN)* 2-1 aet (0-0, 2-1), 2-2 on aggregate, HJK win 5-4 on penalties
    (Zjuzins 48', Panić 56'; Murilo 75')

HJK's Northern Irish keeper Conor Hazard (no relation to the Belgian brothers, although his first name would kind of fit with Eden, Thorgan, Kylian, and Ethan)
spilled a shot by Brazilian in the East Emerson Deocleciano, and Artūrs Zjuzins
buried the rebound: https://gfycat.com/weirdincomparableamethystgemclam Serbian striker Stefan Panić then beat the Finnish offside trap to tap in a free-kick by Czech left-back Petr Mareš: https://gfycat.com/bravegiantadder but Brazilian in the North Murilo saved HJK's hide with a free-kick that went straight through a very leaky Latvian wall: https://gfycat.com/oddballwearyibis Not much happened in extra time, and in the shoot-out it was Panić who panicked
(sorry not sorry) and sent his spot kick high.

FK ŽALGIRIS (LTU)* v KF Ballkani (KOS) 1-0 aet (0-0, 0-0), 2-1 on aggregate (Oyewusi 97'; Red Card: Tamulionis (Žal, goalkeeper coach) 97')

Ballkani midfielder Meriton Korenica will probably have had a sleepless night, because in extra time he could have kept out Nigerian striker Mathias Oyewusi's decisive goal, but instead he let the ball slip through his legs: https://gfycat.com/anguishedillfateddunlin

QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* v KKS Lech Poznań (POL) 5-1 (2-1), 5-2 on aggregate
    (Kady 14', 74', Ozobić 42', Medina 56', A. Hüseynov 77'; Velde 1')

Umpteenth European disappointment for a Polish champion in CL qualifiers, and it
had all started so well when after 22 seconds Lech's Norwegian winger Kristoffer
Velde emphatically buried a through ball by João Amaral: https://gfycat.com/favoritehelpfulauklet The Azeri champions hit back immediately though through Brazilian in the East Kady who curled in a shot from the edge of the box: https://gfycat.com/astonishingwealthyhog and they managed to level the overall score already before the break as their formerly Croatian, meanwhile naturalized Azeri mainstay Filip Ozobić buried a loose ball following
an unfortunate intervention by Lech keeper Rudko: https://gfycat.com/farawaydemandinggnatcatcher
Qarabağ's third shouldn't have counted as Colombian defender Kevin Medina had been in an offside position before Rudko spilled Kady's free-kick: https://gfycat.com/fragrantdeliciousdiplodocus but there's no VAR at this stage,
and as it was that was the goal that broke Lech's back. Kady and the substitute Abbas Hüseynov piled on the score against a Polish defence all over the place.

Lincoln Red Imps FC (GIB)* v KF SHKUPI (MKD) 2-0 (1-0), 2-3 on aggregate (Juanfri 32', Casciaro 69')

Credit to the Gibraltarians even though their comeback fell short in the end. 37-year-old midfielder Nano, who has three seasons in Greece with Panathinaikos and six more in the Spanish 2nd Division on his CV, got off a wicked shot that went off the post and allowed fellow Spaniard Juanfri to volley in: https://gfycat.com/possiblehealthyamazonparrot and the indefatigable Lee Casciaro, soon to be 41-year-old legend of Gibraltarian football, fired in the Red Imps's second: https://gfycat.com/CalculatingImprobableCow

FC SHERIFF (MDA)* v HŠK Zrinjski Mostar (BIH) 1-0 (1-0), 1-0 on aggregate (Savić 22' (og))

Due to the volatile situation in Transnistria UEFA are preventing any matches from being played there, so Sheriff had to move from their top-notch facilities in Tiraspol into Zimbru's stadium in Chișinău. Nevertheless, Igor Savić haplessly heading a corner kick into his own net was enough to overcome harmless
Bosnian champions, and it now looks quite likely that this football-mad country will have to wait yet another year for a first ever European group phase.

    KF Tirana (ALB) v F91 DIDDELENG (LUX)* 1-2 (0-0), 1-3 on aggregate
    (Xhixha 78'; Bojić 49', Sinani 61')

Düdelingen/Dudelange/Diddeleng didn't have any problems in Albania either thanks
to two well-taken shots from distance by journeyman Croatian Filip Bojić and Dejvid Sinani, the older brother of Huddersfield Town and Luxembourg NT midfielder Danel Sinani.

Hibernians FC (MLT) v SHAMROCK ROVERS FC (IRL)* 0-0 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate

Rovers rather mailed that one in.

FK Sutjeska (MNE) v PFC LUDOGORETS RAZGRAD (BUL)* 0-1 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate (Sotiriou 53')

As did Ludogorets, but at least they got all the coefficient points.

KF Víkingur (ISL) v MALMÖ FF (SWE)* 3-3 (1-2), 5-6 on aggregate
    (Gunnarsson 15', 75', Hansen 56'; Birmančević 34', Beijmo 44', Christiansen 47')

That their trip to Iceland wouldn't be a walk in the park for the Swedish champions became clear when after just 15 minutes right-back Karl Friðleifur Gunnarsson levelled the overall score following nice work by Víkingur's Salvadoran playmaker Pablo Punyed: https://gfycat.com/ancientonlyhellbender Still, one good move by Isaac Kiese Thelin was enough for Veljko Birmančević to
race clear and give Malmö the overall lead again: https://gfycat.com/coolwavyiraniangroundjay and two goals either side of half- time by former Werder Bremen flop Felix Beijmo and Malmö's Danish captain Anders
Christiansen seemingly put the result out of reach. But Vikings aren't that easily beaten - Nikolaj Hansen, also a Dane, chested down Davíd Örn Atlason's long ball before firing past MFF keeper Dahlin, and Karl Friðleifur Gunnarsson somewhat inadvertently headed in the equaliser: https://gfycat.com/unimportantshyballoonfish So Malmö had to suffer an unnecessarily nervous finish to the match, but Víkingur only had one more decent
chance when from a Punyed free-kick Hansen weakly headed into Dahlin's arms.

    July 13

FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk (BLR) v NK MARIBOR (SLO)* 0-2 (0-1), 0-2 on aggregate (Baturina 12', 56')

Due to the sanctions the Belarusian champions chose to play their 'home' leg
in Adapazarı in Northwestern Turkey, home of 2nd division team Sakaryaspor, and
on unfamiliar ground two well-taken goals by Ferencváros loanee Roko Baturina were enough for the Slovenians to go through.
Tenth consecutive winless match for Shakhtyor in Europe. BATE used to do way better.

    KÍ (FAR) v FK BODØ/GLIMT (NOR)* 3-1 (2-0), 3-4 on aggregate
    (Mikkelsen 12', J. Andreasen 20', 85'; Boniface 55' (pen))

This match was delayed by a day because terrible weather on the Faroes (tell me about it!) didn't allow any planes to land at Vágar airport until Tuesday afternoon. The Faroese, to their credit, immediately accepted the postponement.

In the end, the Norwegian champions, like their Swedish counterparts, had to survive quite a bit of a scare on an island in the Atlantic as the team from Klaksvík, undisputed leaders of the Faroese Betri deildin, early on managed to score twice from crosses, and even though Victor Boniface, who had already scored all three goals in the first leg, calmed Norwegian nerves from the spot, Jákup Andreasen's late header from a corner kick still made for some squeaky bum
    time.

FC Dinamo Batumi (GEO) v ŠK SLOVAN BRATISLAVA (SLK)* 1-2 aet (0-0, 0-0), 1-2 on aggregate
    (Davitashvili 104'; Barseghyan 115', Weiss 120'+3)

The Georgian teams just can't catch a break in Europe. Dinamo Batumi had already
had the better opportunities in regulation, and halfway through extra time a great solo run by youngster Zuriko Davitashvili gave them the deserved lead: https://gfycat.com/shockedvictoriousgoldfinch but a one-two between the two substitutes Ivan Šaponjić and Tigran Barseghyan ended with Slovan's new Armenian
winger firing in the equaliser via a deflection, and in the 123rd minute somebody as experienced as Vladimír Weiss realised that the Georgian defence and
especially goalkeeper Kupatadze already had their minds on the shoot-out, so he did this: https://gfycat.com/fortunatecavernousadamsstaghornedbeetle
    Oh the pain.

FERENCVÁROSI TC (HUN)* v FC Tobol (KAZ) 5-1 (3-1), 5-1 on aggregate
    (Traoré 4', 17', Laïdouni 21', Bassey 74', 90'+1; Sergeev 23';
    Red Card: Muzhikov (Tob) 78')

As expected, the Kazakhs were much weaker away, and the tie was effectively decided after a little more than 20 minutes. Former Sheriff winger Adama Traoré
(not to be confused with Wolves's Adama Traoré) scored two early goals, Tunisian
international Aïssa Laïdouni fired in a precise shot to make it three, and despite Tobol pulling one back the overall result was never in doubt, and late on young Nigerian striker Fortune Bassey also got a brace.

FC CFR Cluj (ROM)* v FC PYUNIK (ARM) 2-2 aet (1-0, 1-1), 2-2 on aggregate, Pyunik win 4-3 on penalties
    (Adjei-Boateng 6', Petrila 94'; Gajić 89', 119')

Romania are closely contending with Poland for most disappointing European results of a reasonably big league. But full credit to Pyunik who came back from
the absolute brink of elimination not once, but twice. Serbian defender Zoran Gajić became the hero as he headed in a corner kick two minutes before the end of regulation time: https://gfycat.com/wellinformedincrediblekoi and he also fired in from close range following two unfortunate interventions by Cluj keeper
Bălgrădean: https://gfycat.com/questionabledazzlingkiskadee and so managed to drag the tie into penalties where both Claudiu Petrila and Cluj's 35-year-old formerly Portuguese, now naturalized Romanian captain Camora missed from the spot. Ironically, it had been Pyunik who had missed a penalty in extra time.

LINFIELD FC (NIR) v The New Saints FC (WAL)* 2-0 aet (0-0, 1-0), 2-1 on aggregate
    (Mulgrew 90'+4, Devine 95')

Deep in stoppage time Linfield's 36-year-old captain Jamie Mulgrew - 17 seasons with the club and running - unleashed a brilliant strike into the far top corner
of the net: https://juststream.live/LigniteHubcapsElectromechanics and so sent the tie to extra time where Ethan Devine soon got the Northern Irish winner from
    a cross.

Qarabağ FK (AZE)* v FC Zürich (SUI) 3-2 (2-0)
    (Kady 17', Wadji 36', 66'; Kamberi 65', Kryeziu 85' (pen))

Only two matches into his tenure as André Breitenreiter's successor with the 6reigning Swiss champions (the first one lost 0-4 against Young Boys), much- maligned former Austrian NT manager Franco Foda is already under a lot of pressure, and FCZ's first half in Azerbaijan didn't help either as Qarabağ quite
easily dominated the game. Brazilian in the East Kady surprised Zürich keeper Brecher at his near post: https://gfycat.com/astonishingonlyafricanhornbill and Kady's Senegalese teammate Ibrahima Wadji scored a somewhat similar goal on the break to make it two: https://gfycat.com/fearlessvigilantharborseal Still, Zürich got a lucky break in the second half when their young centre-back Lindrit
Kamberi headed in a free-kick from what appeared to be a slight offside position: https://gfycat.com/infamousimpartialflies (VAR will make its first appearance only in the play-offs - far too late if you ask me, considering what's at stake in these early qualifiers), and despite Wadji immediately restoring Qarabağ's two-goal lead, a cleverly won late penalty means that Foda's
side still has everything to play for in the return leg. But the pressure remains just as high.

FK Žalgiris (LTU) v Malmö FF (SWE) 1-0 (0-0)
    (Ourega 49')

Following their troubles against Víkingur, another quite poor match by MFF, and
you kind of begin to ask yourself what they have actually been doing with their privileged position as Sweden's only recent participant in multiple Champions League group phases. Frenchman Fabien Ourega scored the deserved winning goal for the Lithuanian champions by bending a shot over Malmö keeper Dahlin: https://gfycat.com/insignificantdensecrow

    FC Pyunik (ARM)* v F91 Diddeleng (LUX) 0-1 (0-0)
    (Hadji 72' (pen))

Deserved win for the Luxembourgers, as Pyunik were completely harmless in attack.

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL)* v Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL) 3-0 (2-0)
    (Sotiriou 26', 35', Igor Thiago 90'+4)

The only really one-sided match. Former FC København striker Pieros Sotiriou got
an early brace by first heading in German-Brazilian Cauly's cross: https://gfycat.com/smugunrulyhoopoe and then firing into the empty net after Rovers defender Lee Grace had blocked a shot by one of Ludogorets's newest Brazilians, former Ceará forward Rick: https://gfycat.com/scentedtautfantail The
Irish champions were improved in the second half, but still their hopes for the return leg were all but extinguished when deep in stoppage time they failed to clear a cross and Igor Thiago (another quite recent arrival from Brazil, and a former participant in Cruzeiro's ill-fated Série B campaigns) saw his shot go in
    via two deflections: https://gfycat.com/littlepastelafricanjacana

    Linfield FC (NIR) v FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR)* 1-0 (0-0)
    (Millar 83')

Quite poor from the Norwegian champions and last season's ECL quarterfinalists to follow up a loss on the Faroes with one in Belfast, but one would think that they should still be more than capable of turning the tie around at home since it was above all their wastefulness in front of the Northern Irish net - and good saves by Linfield keeper Chris Johns - that led to their defeat. Carelessness in defence played an important role, too, as it was a ball needlessly lost in front of their own area that allowed Kirk Millar to race clear and beat Bodø's Russian keeper Khaykin with a delightful lob: https://gfycat.com/wideinsidiousbaldeagle

GNK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)* v KF Shkupi (MKD) 2-2 (1-1)
    (Ademi 44', Petković 86'; Queven 25', Cephas 89')

After Dinamo captain Arijan Ademi had blazed over the bar from close range, the North Macedonian champions took the surprise lead when their Costa Rican playmaker Freddy Álvarez sent a long ball over the top and Brazilian in the Balkans Queven da Silva Inácio, who also runs under the nickname 'Putita' (that
doesn't mean what I think it means, does it?), held off an ineffective challenge
by Josip Mišić before beating Dinamo keeper Livaković with a little luck: https://gfycat.com/defensivedefiantflickertailsquirrel The Croatians equalised through Ademi who likewise was a bit lucky that his awkward header bounced perfectly into the top corner: https://gfycat.com/meekathleticfluke and four minutes from time the natural order of things seemed restored when Bruno Petković found himself in the perfect position to collect Ademi's mishit shot and fire in: https://gfycat.com/serpentineincredibleazurevasesponge Nevertheless, Dinamo still managed to throw away the win as on occasion of a long ball Livaković needlessly left his net and was promptly lobbed by the substitute Renaldo Cephas, a young Jamaican winger that has somehow found his way to North Macedonia: https://gfycat.com/partialmealygermanshepherd

    League Path

FC Midtjylland (DEN)* v AEK Larnaca FC (CYP) 1-1 (0-0)
    (Sviatchenko 84'; Gyurcsó 81')

Midtjylland dominated the first half, hit the woodwork twice, and were unlucky to see a robust penalty shout denied, but an injury just before halftime to their playmaker Evander threw a spanner in their works, and the Cypriots grew more adventurous after the break, culminating in a cross by longtime Fehérvár player Ádám Gyurcsó that turned into their opening goal: https://gfycat.com/insistentviciousechidna At least FCM immediately got the equaliser when the 16th time became the charm and Erik Sviatchenko finally nodded in one of their endless row of corner kicks.

HJK (FIN) v FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE)* 1-2 (0-1)
    (Radulović 50'; Chorý 6' (pen), Kopic 57')

An unfortunate but indisputable handball penalty gave the Czech champions the early lead, and in an open match both sides continued to have chances to score, the Finns most notably when AIK loanee Bojan Radulović volleyed against the crossbar from close range. The Serbian striker did better after the break, firing in through the legs of Viktoria's unlucky keeper Staněk at the second attempt: https://gfycat.com/warmheartedvariablebackswimmer but the Czechs almost
immediately hit back as Jan Kopic collected Pavel Bucha's clever back-heel and punished HJK's lax defending with a precise shot from the edge of the area: https://gfycat.com/scalytestykiskadee

Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR) v Olympiacos FC (GRE)* 1-1 (0-1)
    (Haziza 90'+2; Zinckernagel 7')

Philip Zinckernagel, freshly arrived in Greece from his stint with Evangelos Marinakis's other club Nottingham Forest, got the early opener for Olympiacos by
tapping into the empty net after a shot by the Brazilian Tiquinho had been pushed against the post by Maccabi's US keeper Josh Cohen. The Israeli were the better team for the remainder of the match though as Olympiacos - as has become quite the norm for Greek teams at a point this early in their season - played very passive, and in stoppage time this was finally punished by Dolev Haziza, and in a manner that can't be described by anything other than Zlatanesque: https://juststream.live/SaddlebagsEndsTenfold As to whether that's really what he was planning to do, let's just give him the benefit of the doubt.

Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)* v ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK) 1-2 (0-0)
    (Zachariassen 70'; Kashia 81', Barseghyan 86')

Before the game both the Slovakian and the Hungarian press quite played up the fact that this was the first official match between the biggest teams of the two
countries since an infamous CL qualifier back in 1992 that was marred by major violence in the stands when Slovakian police clashed with Hungarian fans, with each side blaming the other to this day. Tempers and pyrotechnics flared high this time around, too - Slovan's team bus was attacked with stones, crude anti- Slovakian banners were flown, it was raining plastic cups - but on the pitch things were a bit calmer, thankfully. Kristoffer Zachariassen headed against the
crossbar early on for Ferencváros, and the Norwegian also got the opener when he
swept in a cross by his compatriot Tokmac Nguen. Slovan turned the match around though with two late goals - first Tigran Barseghyan sent a free-kick towards newly naturalized, formerly Argentinian left-back Vernon De Marco who volleyed across goal for Georgian centre-back Guram Kashia to head in from close range, and Barseghyan even got the winner with a fine curled shot: https://juststream.live/AdherentCorticosteroidSprinted Ferencváros could still have equalised deep in stoppage time, but Eldar Ćivić's shot was deflected onto
    the woodwork.

NK Maribor (SLO) v FC Sheriff (MDA)* 0-0 (0-0)

Quite poor from the Slovenians against a team in which not a single player (nor the manager) has remained compared to last season's win against Real Madrid.

    League Path

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)* v Fenerbahçe SK (TUR) 0-0 (0-0)

Dynamo had decided to play their 'home' game in Poland, choosing 2nd division side ŁKS's brand-new Stadion Miejski in Łódź, but as was unfortunately to be
expected seven months without a competitive game (except for the two World Cup play-off matches in which several Dynamo players participated) have taken their
toll on the Ukrainians - they rarely threatened and didn't have a single shot on
target. At least Fener weren't firing on all cylinders yet either.

    (Pernica 11', Sýkora 21', 73', Hejda 31', Kliment 84')

A strong performance by the Czechs who didn't give HJK even the ghost of a chance. Luděk Pernica headed in Lukáš Kalvach's inswinging free-kick; Jan Sýkora
volleyed in a loose ball from the edge of the area; Viktorka's captain and veteran defender Lukáš Hejda likewise tapped in an inswinging free-kick; Sýkora
punished more terrible Finnish defending by sweeping in Milan Havel's feed: https://gfycat.com/DrearyTenderBobcat and finally Jan Kliment headed in yet another cross.

FC SHERIFF (MDA)* v NK Maribor (SLO) 1-0 (0-0), 1-0 on aggregate
    (Yansané 88')

Guinean forward Momo Yansané, one of the few survivors in Sheriff's squad from last season, got the only goal of the tie by poking in a free-kick by Burkinabé
international Abou Ouattara (one of the mostly African new guys) that Maribor's defence had failed to clear: https://gfycat.com/shockedfearlessleafcutterant

    F91 Diddeleng (LUX) v FC PYUNIK (ARM)* 1-4 (1-1), 2-4 on aggregate
    (Hassan 21'; Juninho 24', Juričić 54', 85', Otubanjo 76')

Things looked good for the Luxembourgers when in an absolutely brilliant move Mohcine Hassan Nader headed in his own mishit volley: https://juststream.live/ConciergeNecksSexes Pyunik had been completely harmless in both matches up to that point, but a bit like their namesake ('pyunik' means 'phoenix' in Armenian) they came back out of nowhere when their Serbian winger Uroš Nenadović headed a cross back across goal and Brazilian in the East Juninho
was at hand to nod in: https://gfycat.com/thisthreadbarecomet A bad mistake by Düdelingen's centre-back Aldin Skenderović allowed Nenadović's Bosnian substitute Luka Juričić, newly arrived in Armenia from a stint in South Korea's
second division, to level the overall score: https://gfycat.com/braverevolvingicelandgull and the Luxembourgers freely continued to beat themselves - first a dreadful back pass by their French defender Jules Diouf ended up at the feet of Yusuf Otubanjo - incidentally one of the few Salzburg prospects brought in by Ralf Rangnick that never worked out at all - and the Nigerian striker left Düdelingen's young keeper Lucas Fox no chance to give the Armenians the overall lead: https://gfycat.com/VeneratedWellinformedAmphiuma
and then Fox gifted Pyunik the fourth himself: https://gfycat.com/CoolFeistyDobermanpinscher

The second year in a row that Armenia manage to send a team to a European group stage.

KF Shkupi (MKD) v GNK DINAMO ZAGREB (CRO)* 0-1 (0-0), 2-3 on aggregate
    (Ademi 47')

Last year's surprising exit against Sheriff notwithstanding - when the stats of a CL qualifier look even, you can still be reasonably sure that it will be Dinamo who will go through in the end. One moment of brilliance by Luka Menalo who found Arijan Ademi unmarked in the box was enough for the Croatian qualifying machine.

Shamrock Rovers FC (IRL) v PFC LUDOGORETS RAZGRAD (BUL)* 2-1 (0-0), 2-4 on aggregate
(Greene 21', Emakhu 88'; Cauly 90'+1; Red Card: Show (Lud) 51')

The trip to Ireland looked like a mere formality for the Bulgarian champions but late on became a very nervous affair indeed. Aaron Greene tapped in the rebound after Ludogorets's Dutch keeper Sergio Padt had parried a header by Aston Villa youth product Graham Burke; Angolan midfielder Manuel Cafumana, nicknamed Show, was sent off with a second booking to reduce the Bulgarians to ten men; and two young substitutes combined for Rovers's second as Aidomo Emakhu
converted Neil Farrugia's through ball: https://gfycat.com/untidyrecentdunlin But while the Irish champions were chasing the goal that would carry the tie to extra time Ludogorets caught them on the break and Cauly finished off a one-two with fellow Brazilian Igor Thiago.

    League Path

AEK Larnaca FC (CYP) v FC MIDTJYLLAND (DEN)* 1-1 aet (1-1, 1-1), 2-2 on aggregate, Midtjylland win 4-3 on penalties
    (Olatunji 9'; Dalsgaard 12')

The Cypriots took a rather surprising early lead thanks to Victor Olatunji's perfectly placed header from Frenchman Imad Faraj's cross: https://gfycat.com/satisfiedillustriousiberianchiffchaff but FCM immediately equalised when Henrik Dalsgaard likewise headed in a corner kick. Both sides subsequently had their opportunities - albeit not a lot of them - and a somewhat
miscued shot by Midtjylland forward Gustav Isaksen clipped the crossbar. In extra time it was the Danes that rode their luck when four minutes from the end a shot by the Israeli substitute Omri Altman was deflected onto the post, and in
the shoot-out it was ironically Altman who sent the first penalty against the crossbar. Sory Kaba could have won it for Midtjylland but gave the Cypriots a lifeline with a weak spot kick that was saved by AEK's new Bosnian keeper Kenan Pirić, but immediately afterwards Portuguese midfielder Luís Gustavo (not to be
confused with a certain mustachioed Brazilian that used to play for Bayern) sent
his penalty against the right post and the Danes into the next round.

    FK BODØ/GLIMT (NOR)* v Linfield FC (NIR) 8-0 (4-0), 8-1 on aggregate
    (Vetlesen 7', Boniface 21' (pen), Pellegrino 25', 54' (pen), Saltnes 29', Espejord 52', 88', Sampsted 73'; Red Card: Millar (Lin) 21')

Yeah, so as expected Bodø narrowly managed to turn this tie around at home. Linfield's first-leg hero Kirk Millar got himself sent off for doing a Suárez on
his goal line, and one man down the Northern Irish completely fell apart. Amahl Pellegrino's first goal was the nicest: https://gfycat.com/embarrassedidealasianlion

FC Zürich (SUI) v QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* 2-2 aet (1-0, 2-1), 4-5 on aggregate (Medvedev 4' (og), Santini 90'+5; Kady 56', Owusu 98')

Already early on Qarabağ captain Maksim Medvedev helped FCZ's toothless attack out by steering Fabian Rohner's cross into his own net: https://gfycat.com/naivecheapkronosaurus Overall the Azeri were the better team though and they got the deserved equaliser when a cross pinballed around in the Zürich box and Qarabağ's usual main threat Kady was left with a simple finish:
https://gfycat.com/rapidmellowchevrotain If Away Goal Rule were still a thing Ivan Santini's 95th-minute header that beat Qarabağ keeper Məhəmmədəliyev at
the third attempt: https://gfycat.com/allwateryamberpenshell would have won it for the Swiss, and dominated the headlines since it looked borderline off-side, but instead the game went to extra time where Qarabağ got the deserved aggregate
winner when Abdellah Zoubir and Owusu carved the Swiss defence open on the break, and the Ghanese striker beat FCZ keeper Brecher with a sumptous shot: https://gfycat.com/happyhotbillygoat

It used to be - five to ten years ago - that a team managed by Franco Foda would
play a terribly unattractive style of football but somehow grind out results, which the critics grudgingly acknowledged. He appears to have completely lost that touch though - with the Austrian NT as well as with the Swiss Champions - and now all that remains is the unattractive football. I'm curious how long he'll survive in Zurich.

Malmö FF (SWE) v FK ŽALGIRIS (LTU) 0-2 (0-0), 0-3 on aggregate
(Oyewusi 34', Renan Oliveira 52'; Red Card: Christiansen (Mal) 78')

Seriously, what's wrong with Malmö? Fully deserved win for Žalgiris who extended
the aggregate lead when their Nigerian striker Mathias Oyewusi raced clear on the break; Brazilian in the East Renan Oliveira tapped in from close range to put the result out of reach; and a little bit of Lithuanian shithousery made Anders Christiansen lose his nerve and the Malmö captain got himself sent off with a second booking.

First ever European group phase for a Lithuanian team. Eleven associations
left who've never been: San Marino, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Andorra, Iceland, Malta, Montenegro, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Bosnia- Herzegovina.

ŠK Slovan Bratislava (SLK) v FERENCVÁROSI TC (HUN)* 1-4 (0-2), 3-5 on aggregate
    (De Marco 70'; Boli 20', Zachariassen 31', Traoré 89', Laïdouni 90'+5)

Ferencváros just needed half an hour to overcome their first-leg home defeat - Franck Boli tapped in Eldar Ćivić's cross: https://gfycat.com/WeightyOilyCoral
and Kristoffer Zachariassen reacted quickly to deflect Samy Mmaee's shot into the net: https://gfycat.com/melodicelasticaquaticleech Slovan had their chances,
too, though and they levelled the overall score when Vernon De Marco headed in a corner kick. The match was on the razor's edge at this point, but it was Adama
Traoré, last season winner over Real Madrid with Sheriff Tiraspol, who got the decisive touch of the game when he slid into right-back Endre Botka's cross: https://gfycat.com/whoppingwavybasenji With Slovan chasing a goal, very late on Tunisian international Aïssa Laïdouni added a fourth on the break.

Olympiacos FC (GRE)* v MACCABI HAIFA FC (ISR) 0-4 (0-1), 1-5 on aggregate (Chery 5', Pierrot 61', 65', Abu Fani 87')

Ouch. Oh well, I guess Marinakis still has Nottingham Forest.
I've already noticed Tjaronn Chery's penchant for scoring spectacular goals in the past, and his early free-kick continued the theme: https://gfycat.com/complicatedwiltedchafer although Olympiacos keeper Vaclík should perhaps have been able to do better. There was then the rarity of a Haitian international scoring a brace in a European tie as Frantzdy Pierrot headed in crosses by Dolev Haziza and Frenchman Pierre Cornud, and late on Mohammad Abu Fani finished the rout with a precise shot into the bottom far corner.

    League Path

Fenerbahçe SK (TUR) v FC DYNAMO KYIV (UKR)* 1-2 aet (0-0, 1-1), 1-2 on aggregate
(Szalai 89'; Buyalskiy 57', Karavayev 114'; Red Card: Yüksek (Fen) 53')

Fenerbahçe had more of the game and the better chances including a shot against
the woodwork by İrfan Kahveci, but things began to go badly for them when İsmail
Yüksek was sent off with a second booking and just four minutes later Tomasz Kędziora schooled Dutch-Turkish wingback Ferdi Kadıoğlu and centred for Vitaliy
Buyalskyi to tap in: https://gfycat.com/unrulythoughtfuldipper Things went from bad to worse for Fener as Enner Valencia was awarded a penalty but saw his spot kick saved by Bushchan: https://gfycat.com/ChubbyWildKoodoo but Dynamo's keeper looked far less convincing one minute from time when he flapped at a corner kick
and Attila Szalai, many years ago deemed surplus to requirements by Rapid Vienna
in quite an error of judgement, headed Fenerbahçe into extra time. Somewhat surprisingly, the Ukrainians were the far more dangerous team from that point on, and while Illya Zabarnyi's header only grazed the outside of the post, Oleksandr Karavayev, who once flopped at Fenerbahçe as a loanee, got the deserved winning goal by firing in youngster Kostyantyn Vivcharenko's cross at the far post: https://gfycat.com/plasticthisgreatwhiteshark

After Dynamo had scored the Fenerbahçe fans started chanting Putin's name, and Dynamo coach Lucescu refused to attend the post-match press conference in return. I have to admit I'm really quite glad that my team Sturm Graz are now playing the Ukrainians instead. The Turkish flood that had already begun to pour
into our social media channels has also been stopped short.

It's been fourteen years now that Fener last played in the Champions League group stages. Wouldn't have guessed so myself.

    Champions Path

FC VIKTORIA PLZEŇ (CZE)* v HJK (FIN) 5-0 (3-0), 7-1 on aggregate

Guinean forward Momo Yansané, one of the few survivors in Sheriff's squad from
last season, got the only goal of the tie by poking in a free-kick by Burkinabé
international Abou Ouattara (one of the mostly African new guys) that Maribor's
defence had failed to clear: https://gfycat.com/shockedfearlessleafcutterant

    F91 Diddeleng (LUX) v FC PYUNIK (ARM)* 1-4 (1-1), 2-4 on aggregate
    (Hassan 21'; Juninho 24', Juričić 54', 85', Otubanjo 76')

Things looked good for the Luxembourgers when in an absolutely brilliant move
Mohcine Hassan Nader headed in his own mishit volley: https://juststream.live/ConciergeNecksSexes Pyunik had been completely harmless
in both matches up to that point, but a bit like their namesake ('pyunik' means
'phoenix' in Armenian) they came back out of nowhere when their Serbian winger
Uroš Nenadović headed a cross back across goal and Brazilian in the East Juninho
was at hand to nod in: https://gfycat.com/thisthreadbarecomet A bad mistake by
Düdelingen's centre-back Aldin Skenderović allowed Nenadović's Bosnian substitute Luka Juričić, newly arrived in Armenia from a stint in South Korea's
second division, to level the overall score: https://gfycat.com/braverevolvingicelandgull and the Luxembourgers freely continued to beat themselves - first a dreadful back pass by their French defender Jules Diouf ended up at the feet of Yusuf Otubanjo - incidentally one
of the few Salzburg prospects brought in by Ralf Rangnick that never worked out
at all - and the Nigerian striker left Düdelingen's young keeper Lucas Fox no
chance to give the Armenians the overall lead: https://gfycat.com/VeneratedWellinformedAmphiuma
and then Fox gifted Pyunik the fourth himself: https://gfycat.com/CoolFeistyDobermanpinscher

The second year in a row that Armenia manage to send a team to a European group
    stage.

KF Shkupi (MKD) v GNK DINAMO ZAGREB (CRO)* 0-1 (0-0), 2-3 on aggregate (Ademi 47')

Last year's surprising exit against Sheriff notwithstanding - when the stats of
a CL qualifier look even, you can still be reasonably sure that it will be Dinamo who will go through in the end. One moment of brilliance by Luka Menalo
who found Arijan Ademi unmarked in the box was enough for the Croatian qualifying machine.

Aaron Greene tapped in the rebound after Ludogorets's Dutch keeper Sergio Padt had parried a header by Aston Villa youth product Graham Burke; Angolan midfielder Manuel Cafumana, nicknamed Show, was sent off with a second booking to reduce the Bulgarians to
ten men; and two young substitutes combined for Rovers's second as Aidomo Emakhu
converted Neil Farrugia's through ball: https://gfycat.com/untidyrecentdunlin
But while the Irish champions were chasing the goal that would carry the tie to
extra time Ludogorets caught them on the break and Cauly finished off a one-two
    with fellow Brazilian Igor Thiago.

In extra time it was the Danes that rode their luck when four minutes from the end
a shot by the Israeli substitute Omri Altman was deflected onto the post, and in
the shoot-out it was ironically Altman who sent the first penalty against the
crossbar. Sory Kaba could have won it for Midtjylland but gave the Cypriots a
lifeline with a weak spot kick that was saved by AEK's new Bosnian keeper Kenan
Pirić, but immediately afterwards Portuguese midfielder Luís Gustavo (not to be
confused with a certain mustachioed Brazilian that used to play for Bayern) sent
his penalty against the right post and the Danes into the next round.

Yeah, so as expected Bodø narrowly managed to turn this tie around at home. Linfield's first-leg hero Kirk Millar got himself sent off for doing a Suárez on
his goal line, and one man down the Northern Irish completely fell apart. Amahl
Pellegrino's first goal was the nicest: https://gfycat.com/embarrassedidealasianlion

FC Zürich (SUI) v QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* 2-2 aet (1-0, 2-1), 4-5 on aggregate (Medvedev 4' (og), Santini 90'+5; Kady 56', Owusu 98')

    Ciao,

The Putin chants sounds like football fans being idiots as opposed to any genuine support for the Russian war effort or any prejudice against Ukrainian people. People are talking of Fener being banned but objectively I don’t see why chanting Putin is
ban worthy but England fans chanting (and I quote) “ I would rather be a Paki than a Turk” didn’t get England banned from Euro 2004.

Besides, Fener’s European record, particularly in Champions League qualifiers, is so poor that they effectively ban themselves.

I'd say that's the minimum required to reduce the gap, or at least to not allow it to grow any wider.

The most important thing in UEFA's current setup is to get your teams to any European group phase
with its six guaranteed matches because that's where the majority of points is won. (and it's a

Denmark already have three teams (FCM, FCK, and Silkeborg) at least in EL or ECL.
Norway have Bodø at least in ECL, and Molde would be seeded in the ECL playoffs.
Neither country has lost a starter yet.

None of that's true for Sweden.

In the current UEFA ranking, Norway are in 13th (up from 29th four years ago, and within a shout

    Sweden are in 23rd.

I'm feeling mischievous today. When was the last previous time Sweden was the
worst of the Scandinavian countries (stricto sensu), both in club football and with the national team?

What about if AIK, Djurgrden (and Malm FF) advance further?

I'd say that's the minimum required to reduce the gap, or at least to not allow it to grow any wider.

The most important thing in UEFA's current setup is to get your teams to any European group phase
with its six guaranteed matches because that's where the majority of points is won. (and it's a

    August 2

    Champions Path

FC Sheriff (MDA) v FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE)* 1-2 (1-1)
(Rasheed 36' (pen); Chorý 41' (pen), Bucha 55')

Sheriff's new Ghanaian keeper Razak Abalora appears to be a bit of a wildcard - he pulled off great saves to deny Pavel Bucha and Luděk Pernica, but he also comically ran into Milan Havel to give up a penalty: https://gfycat.com/mammothshadybluebreastedkookaburra (cancelling out an earlier
handball penalty for the Moldovans), and another awkward collision allowed Bucha
to score the winner: https://gfycat.com/tangibleconstantbluet Just before, Viktoria keeper Staněk had done much better at the other end to deflect a powerful free-kick by Sheriff's Brazilian winger Pernambuco against the crossbar.

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL) v GNK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)* 1-2 (1-2)
    (Tekpetey 22'; Perić 6', Padt 9' (og))

Less than ten minutes in and Dinamo were two up - Dino Perić held off two Bulgarian defenders to volley in from eleven metres: https://gfycat.com/defenselessfatherlyacaciarat and Robert Ljubičić, Dinamo's new signing from Rapid Wien and younger brother of Köln midfielder Dejan, sent in a sharp cross that Ludogorets's Dutch keeper Sergio Padt awkwardly deflected into his own net: https://gfycat.com/anotherwelcomeaidi Former Schalke hope Bernard Tekpetey reduced the deficit with a fierce drive from a tight angle that
beat Dinamo keeper Livaković at his near post - not exactly the first time he's
looked shaky in this European campaign: https://gfycat.com/mellowthiskob Ludogorets hit the woodwork twice in the second half, but the equaliser eluded them.

    League Path

AS Monaco FC (FRA) v PSV (NED)* 1-1 (0-1)
    (Disasi 80'; Veerman 38')

Luuk de Jong, back from Spain after three years, cleverly laid the ball off for Joey Veerman, and the young midfielder rifled the ball in from the edge of the area: https://gfycat.com/longdecenthoopoe Monaco got a deserved equaliser when Youssouf Fofana headed on Ismail Jakobs's free-kick, and Axel Disasi reacted quickly to fire in from close range: https://gfycat.com/wideunconsciousbull

Last year in the Europa League group stages PSV also drew Monaco away, but lost the home match.

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL) v Rangers FC (SCO)* 2-0 (1-0)
    (Teuma 27', Vanzeir 76' (pen))

Union SG really are an unconventional team, what with their Luxembourg keeper and their Maltese captain Teddy Teuma, who scored his first ever international goal with a blistering shot after the Scottish defence had forgotten about him in the box: https://gfycat.com/mealylavishgrunion A very harsh handball penalty gave the Belgian surprise package their second, but the Scots also escaped twice
more when Dante Vanzeir one-on-one with Jon McLaughlin was denied by Rangers' new number one keeper, and James Tavernier cleared a header by his English compatriot Christian Burgess off the Rangers goal line.

SL Benfica (POR)* v FC Midtjylland (DEN) 4-1 (3-0)
    (Ramos 17', 33', 61', Fernández 40'; Sisto 78' (pen))

Great technical ability combined with Roger Schmidt's piranha pressing meant that poor Midtjylland didn't stand a chance - exactly one year after they had lost 0-3 at the same stage against PSV, back then coached by Roger Schmidt. The first two goals were carbon copies of each other, with Benfica's new signing David Neres powering down the right wing and whipping in a cross that Gonçalo Ramos headed over the line. Another new arrival, Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernández, scored a brilliant third when he directly volleyed in João Mário's
corner kick: https://gfycat.com/jitterymatureaxolotl and Ramos completed his hat
trick by calmly controlling Rafa Silva's cross before firing past FCM keeper Olafsson. The Danes got a consolation goal when Paulinho was felled in the box and Pione Sisto scored with a Panenka from the spot.

    August 3

    Champions Path

Qarabağ FK (AZE)* v Ferencvárosi TC (HUN) 1-1 (1-1)
    (Owusu 34'; Boli 17')

In a very even game Ivorian forward Franck Boli nodded the Hungarian champions into the lead following a chaotic goalmouth scramble: https://gfycat.com/feistyleangalapagosalbatross and at the other end it was Ghanaian striker Owusu who was the quickest to react after Fradi keeper Dibusz had failed to hold on to Filip Ozobić's free-kick: https://gfycat.com/marriedbiodegradablebandicoot Both sides missed big chances in the second half.

    FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) v FK Žalgiris (LTU)* 5-0 (2-0)
    (Vetlesen 33' (pen), Pellegrino 36', Salvesen 58', Høibråten 61',
    Espejord 90'+3)

As if wanting to show Malmö how it's done. A VAR penalty broke the deadlock, after which a Norwegian avalanche rolled over hapless Lithuanians. Amahl Pellegrino converted Bodø captain Ulrik Saltnes's through ball: https://gfycat.com/everlastingidealisticamericanbobtail Pellegrino provided the assist for Lars-Jørgen Salvesen's third, centre-half Marius Høibråten headed in
Elias Kristoffersen Hagen's cross, and the substitute Runar Espejord completed the rout in stoppage time with an emphatic shot into the near top corner: https://gfycat.com/DampFamousCob
It's noticeable how Bodø/Glimt always appear to get their goals from a large variety of scorers. Also, that was their 12th European home win in a row.

Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR)* v Apollon Limassol FC (CYP) 4-0 (1-0)
    (Peybernes 38' (og), Mohamed 54', 62', Pierrot 79';
    Red Card: Jovanović (Apo) 60')

Frenchman Mathieu Peybernes, newly arrived on Cyprus after several years in the Segunda División, unluckily deflected Dolev Haziza's cross into his own net: https://gfycat.com/MeagerRequiredAphid Nigerien (not Nigerian) international Ali Mohamed got a brace by first volleying in Frantzdy Pierrot's great lay-
off and then heading in Dean David's cross from the left wing. In between those goals Apollon's Serbian defender Vukašin Jovanović got sent off with two yellows, and Haiti international Pierrot got the fourth by likewise heading in a
cross from the left, this time Haziza's.

FK Crvena Zvezda (SRB)* v FC Pyunik (ARM) 5-0 (3-0)
    (Bukari 29', 44', 70', Kangwa 33', Mitrović 77'; Red Card: Rodić (Crv) 90')

The fourth easy home win in this round. Two of Red Star's new African signings got on the scoresheet - Ghanaian winger Osman Bukari, formerly of Gent, got a hat trick with two goals on the break and one cross that turned into a shot beating Pyunik keeper Yurchenko at his near post: https://gfycat.com/unfoldedmarriedboa and Zambian international Kings Kangwa, previously in the Russian Premier League, headed in after Yurchenko had flapped at a cross: https://gfycat.com/lastingcourteousbunting Serbian-Canadian Stefan Mitrović added the fifth with a nice solo run. Only Milan Rodić's late two bookings in two minutes were absolutely pointless. Or he didn't fancy a trip to Armenia.

    League Path

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)* v SK Sturm Graz (AUT) 1-0 (1-0)
    (Karavayev 28')

Played in Łódź again. Following a convincing win over Salzburg in the league a
certain optimism reigned among the Sturm faithful, and the Austrians indeed started the match quite brightly, but young Danish striker Rasmus Højlund, who within just half a year has very much endeared himself to us Sturm fans as a kind of budget Haaland, and has already been rumoured to leave again this summer
for a hefty transfer fee, showed his commitment to the club by wasting two excellent early opportunities in a way that will make every potential buyer think twice. At the other end Dynamo several times broke through on the wings far too easily, and on one such occasion left-back Vladyslav Dubinchak delivered
an outswinging cross which Oleksandr Karavayev met with a perfect volley that left Sturm keeper Siebenhandl no chance: https://gfycat.com/thankfulkaleidoscopicangwantibo This took the wind out of Sturm's sails completely, and in a rather poor second half Dynamo handled their pressing efforts with ease, but since the Ukrainians' counter-attacking attempts
were also a bit lacking the result still leaves Sturm with everything to play for in the home leg. But we'd need to improve a lot for that.

A misunderstanding between Bodø's Israel-born Russian keeper Khaykin and young centre-back Isak Amundsen led to neither of them going for Petar Mamić's deflected cross, and Ghanaian striker Francis Kyeremeh tapped into the empty net
at the far post. 19-year-old winger Joel Mvuka headed in a cross by Bodø captain
Ulrik Saltnes to get the equaliser, and soon after Mvuka was also the player that Petar Mamić was forced to bring down with a sliding tackle, and while a VAR
check decreed that the foul had taken place just outside the box this also meant that Žalgiris's Croatian left-back had to be sent off.

Apollon Limassol FC (CYP) v MACCABI HAIFA FC (ISR)* 2-0 (2-0), 2-4 on aggregate (Ongenda 19', Coll 27')

Apollon fans had their hopes up at the break due to two long-distance shots, one

of PSG's academy alongside Kingsley Coman before his career took a nosedive): https://gfycat.com/vapidnippygoshawk and the other, even better one, by the Argentine Israel Coll: https://gfycat.com/delayedableballpython but the Israeli champions kept the Cypriots at bay in the second half.

rolled his spot kick woefully wide: https://gfycat.com/unhealthyecstaticaltiplanochinchillamouse Things became a bit
complicated for Viktoria when just after the break Milan Havel handled the ball in the box: https://gfycat.com/prestigioushotcapeghostfrog and Sheriff's new Nigerian signing Rasheed Akanbi converted from the spot. With the tie one goal away from extra time, Viktoria keeper Staněk had to pull off good saves against
Ghanaian Salifu Mudasiru and Burkinabé Abou Ouattara (these days Sheriff are a veritable CAF selection), until the Czech champions got the winner when their Colombian midfielder Jhon Mosquera tapped in Lukáš Kalvach's corner kick: https://gfycat.com/raweducatedglowworm Evangelou late on also received a second yellow for breaking up a counter attack (the first one had been for the shirt pull).

FC Pyunik (ARM) v FK CRVENA ZVEZDA (SRB)* 0-2 (0-1), 0-7 on aggregate
    (Kanga 44' (pen), Pavkov 60')

Red Star were awarded an early handball penalty, but Pyunik keeper Buchnev saved Aleksandar Katai's poorly struck effort. No matter, as another penalty, awarded for Arthur Avagyan's wrestling move on Red Star's Ivorian midfielder Sékou Sanogo, was expertly despatched by Gabonese international Guélor Kanga. Milan Pavkov headed in Marko Gobeljić's cross for the second.

    Ferencvárosi TC (HUN) v QARABAĞ FK (AZE)* 1-3 (0-1), 2-4 on aggregate (Traoré 86'; Zoubir 7', Wadji 54', 78')

A poor performance by the Hungarians was punished early on when Adnan Kovačević's bad pass was intercepted by Ibrahima Wadji and two quick moves later
Qarabağ's French mainstay Abdellah Zoubir beat Ferencváros keeper Dibusz at his
near post: https://gfycat.com/falseshorttermivorybilledwoodpecker Kady's excellent footwork left Fradi's new Danish centre-back Rasmus Thelander in the dust before centring for Wadji who turned the ball in from short range: https://gfycat.com/freshmixedblackfly and the Senegalese striker also got the third for the Azeri champions from a fast and perfectly played counter attack: https://gfycat.com/foolhardysaltyazurewingedmagpie Former Sheriff winger Adama Traoré's goal following good work by the young Brazilian Marquinhos came far too
    late: https://gfycat.com/torncrazykitty

GNK DINAMO ZAGREB (CRO)* v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad (BUL) 4-2 (3-1), 6-3 on aggregate
    (Drmić 12', Oršić 27' (pen), 44', Petković 87' (pen); Despodov 45'+4, 49' (pen);
Red Cards: Yankov (Lud) 17', Rick (Lud) 72', Karničnik (Lud) 86')

The Bulgarians are furious with the French referee Bastien, but in reality it's the players who failed to adapt to his quite consistent strict line of refereeing, dishing out yellows left and right, with Dominic Yankov having collected two of them after seventeen minutes. There was also nothing wrong with
any of the three penalty decisions, and while Dario Špikić did embellish a bit
on occasion of Rick's second yellow, the Brazilian's hand also had no business in the young Croatian's face.

FC Midtjylland (DEN) v SL BENFICA (POR)* 1-3 (0-1), 2-7 on aggregate
    (Sisto 63'; Fernández 23', Araújo 56', Gonçalves 88')

Another show of force by Benfica. Enzo Fernández buried Gonçalo Ramos's perfectly timed cross for the early opening goal: https://gfycat.com/eachenviousbinturong and 20-year-old Henrique Araújo, whom I
had last noticed earlier this year when he scored a hat trick in the Youth League final against Salzburg, headed in João Mário's cross for the second: https://gfycat.com/FrayedIdealisticBarnowl Pione Sisto pulled one back for the Danes when he volleyed into the gaping net after Sory Kaba's header had come off
the crossbar: https://gfycat.com/showyeducatedfairybluebird Late on, Diogo Gonçalves got the third with an absolutely cracking shot from distance that made
even Roger Schmidt smile: https://juststream.live/AlliancesAirwavesPermanence Unsettling.

PSV (NED)* v AS Monaco FC (FRA) 3-2 aet (1-0, 2-2), 4-3 on aggregate
    (Veerman 21', Gutiérrez 89', De Jong 109'; Maripán 58', Ben Yedder 70')

Just as in the first leg between the two Joey Veerman gave PSV the lead by sweeping in Ismael Saibari's cut-back cross: https://gfycat.com/sparseoffbeatbushbaby and just as in the first leg Monaco were the stronger team after the break and deservedly equalised through their Chilean centre-back Guillermo Maripán, who fired in from a goalmouth scramble after a corner kick. It looked as if Monaco had won it when Wissam Ben Yedder turned in Gelson Martins's excellently timed long ball at the far post, but two minutes from the end a cross by the 19-year-old Belgian substitute Johan Bakayoko was expertly headed back across goal by Luuk de Jong, and Érick Gutierrez nodded in from close range for the equaliser. Somewhat inevitably, it was also Luuk de Jong who headed in Jordan Teze's cross for the extra time winner: https://gfycat.com/biodegradablealienatedbarebirdbat

SK Sturm Graz (AUT) v FC DYNAMO KYIV (UKR)* 1-2 aet (1-0, 1-0), 1-3 on aggregate
(Højlund 27'; Vivcharenko 97', Tsyhankov 112'; Red Card: Sarkaria (Stu) 105'+1)

Sturm played much better than in the first leg, and Rasmus Højlund, his goal scoring instincts restored, levelled the aggregate score from a great through ball by Salzburg academy product Alexander Prass: https://gfycat.com/jealousgrandioseiberianmole The tie was then delicately balanced for a long time, but things started to go wrong for us when Højlund had
to come off injured after 75 minutes, and without their focal point in attack, and also visibly tiring, Sturm lost control of the match. Denys Harmash's header
that crashed off the crossbar in stoppage time was a sign of things to come, and in extra time Viktor Tsyhankov sent a diagonal cross over the defence that was collected by Kostyantyn Vivcharenko who then fired through Sturm keeper Siebenhandl's legs: https://gfycat.com/gloriousclearjuliabutterfly Manprit Sarkaria then also collected a stupid second yellow, and while Sturm down to ten
ineffectually tried to chase the goal that would send the match to penalties, they got picked off by a fine move on the break, finished off by Tsyhankov: https://gfycat.com/whisperedposhhectorsdolphin so we didn't even earn a point for the Austrian UEFA coefficient, which sucks. In that regard, it would actually have been better if Harmash's stoppage time header had gone in.

Oh well. The silver lining is that I wasn't really looking forward to getting demolished by Benfica anyway.

RANGERS FC (SCO)* v Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL) 3-0 (1-0), 3-2 on aggregate
(Tavernier 45' (pen), Čolak 58', Tillman 79'; Red Card: Amani (USG) 90'+4)

Impressive comeback win by last season's Europa League finalists, but who knows how things would have turned out if Union defender Siebe Van der Heyden hadn't committed a completely unnecessary handball in the box minutes before the break.
Antonio Čolak, whose goals for Malmö had eliminated Rangers from the Champions
League qualifiers last year, nodded in from close range after Union's Luxembourgian keeper Anthony Moris had parried Scott Arfield's cross, and Rangers got the decisive goal thanks to a blunder by Moris who got beaten to Borna Barišić's loooong cross by the young Bayern München loanee Malik Tillman.

    Champions Path

FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) v GNK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)* 1-0 (1-0)
    (Pellegrino 37')

With a capacity of 8,270, just above UEFA's minimum requirement, Bodø's recently
refurbished Aspmyra stadium could become not just the northernmost but also the smallest venue to ever host Champions League football. Its artificial pitch also
appears to be quite conducive to Bodø's high-octane style of play, and following
a somewhat slow start that's what worked against the Croatian champions, too, culminating in Amahl Pellegrino's pin-point cross onto the head of Bodø's 19- year-old latest jewel Joel Mvuka: https://gfycat.com/farneighboringarmyant Soon after, another header by Lars-Jørgen Salvesen went off the crossbar, but about halfway through the second half the Norwegians began to run out of steam, and Dinamo were clearly quite happy to survive a difficult away match with 'just' a 0-1 loss - certainly not the last team that'll think like that in the post-AGR world. Still, the Croatians also missed a golden chance to equalise four minutes
from time when Bruno Petković did well to hold off two defenders in order to find himself alone in front of Bodø/Glimt keeper Khaykin, only to fire wide: https://gfycat.com/bothclumsyamericancrocodile and so the two-time Norwegian champions were able to celebrate their 13th consecutive home win in Europe.

    League Path

FC København (DEN)* v Trabzonspor (TUR) 2-1 (1-0)
    (Claesson 9', Lerager 48'; Bakasetas 79')

The Danish champions have had a rather subpar start to their domestic season, but they took the early lead thanks to their Swedish striker Viktor Claesson who
slid into Rasmus Falk's cross to steer the ball past Trabzonspor keeper Uğurcan
Çakır: https://gfycat.com/thoroughdensedragon A disciplined FCK side then missed
a big chance through their Icelandic international Hákon Arnar Haraldsson who met another Falk cross at the far post only to tap it wide of the empty net, but
the Danes still scored a second right after the break when their Slovakian centre-back Denis Vavro headed on Pep Biel's corner kick and Lukas Lerager stuck
out a leg to send the ball in: https://gfycat.com/PlainRepentantGoldeneye Trabzonspor were a bit more dangerous after that, but they also got very lucky when Tasos Bakasetos's speculative shot from 25 metres took a big deflection off
Georgian defender Davit Khocholava and wrong-footed FCK's newly signed Australian NT keeper Mat Ryan: https://gfycat.com/unfortunatedescriptiveiberianemeraldlizard

Rangers FC (SCO)* v PSV (NED) 2-2 (1-1)
    (Čolak 40', Lawrence 70'; Sangaré 37', Obispo 78')

An entertaining match between Giovanni van Bronckhorst's and Ruud van Nistelrooij's sides, and as both teams variously enjoyed spells of superiority it ended in a logical and deserved draw.

The Scottish defence had made a mess out of Cody Gakpo's corner kick and Ibrahim
Sangaré fired in the loose ball for PSV's opener: https://gfycat.com/orderlygraykinkajou but Rangers responded very well, and just
minutes later a great move down the right side ended with Antonio Čolak, who had
been all but invisible up to that point, sweeping in James Tavernier's low cross: https://gfycat.com/nippywickedalbino An absolute howler by PSV's new Argentine keeper Walter Benítez gifted Rangers their second as he let Tom Lawrence's harmless free-kick from way out slip from his grasp: https://juststream.live/CorrespondNaughtUnambitious Let's be generous and blame the incessant Glaswegian rain. Still, again just minutes later PSV got the deserved equaliser when their centre-back Armando Obispo rose to head in yet another Gakpo corner kick. In between those two goals Čolak was also lucky he got away with punching Ramalho, not exactly sure what VAR was looking at at the time.

Qarabağ FK (AZE) v FC Viktoria Plzeň (CZE)* 0-0 (0-0)

The Czech champions were content to sit deep and defend, but while Qarabağ therefore enjoyed more and better chances they couldn't find the breakthrough. Viktorka's keeper Jindřich Staněk was man of the match as he pulled off a row of
excellent saves, among them an early double intervention against Marko Vešović
and Kady, and a late one against Filip Ozobić's shot from distance.

Maccabi Haifa FC (ISR) v FK Crvena Zvezda (SRB)* 3-2 (1-2)
    (Pierrot 18', 51', Chery 61'; Pešić 27', Kanga 40')

With both sides fluid in attack and shaky in defence that was a really fun match. The Israeli champions were the better team early on and took the lead when Dolev Haziza's weaving run on the right wing resulted in a low cross that Red Star keeper Borjan just couldn't reach, and Haiti international Frantzdy Pierrot controlled the ball with his back to the net before turning and firing in: https://gfycat.com/thoroughofficialandalusianhorse Out of nowhere, and with their first shot on goal, Red Star were level - Aleksandar Katai's clever little
touch saw him flick the ball past an overcommitting Haziza - whose strengths are
not in defence, clearly - and the ensuing volley unintentionally hit his teammate Aleksandar Pešić to wrong-foot Maccabi's American keeper Josh Cohen: https://gfycat.com/floweryzealousindochinahogdeer That goal changed the complexion of the game, and while Osman Bukari missed a great chance when with the gaping net at his mercy he fired over, on occasion of a fast break Red Star's Ghanaian midfielder did better to find his teammate Guélor Kanga all alone at the edge of the box, and the Gabonese curled a perfect shot past Cohen:
https://gfycat.com/marvelouscoordinatedhumpbackwhale Still, the Israeli were far
from beaten, and just as in the first half they came out of the locker rooms the
better team. Haziza, who was literally everywhere - left wing, right wing, centre - delivered a pin-point cross that Pierrot met with a powerful header for
the equaliser: https://gfycat.com/handmadesizzlingbluetickcoonhound and it was again Haziza who found Tjaronn Chery in a bit of space before the Surinamese international beat a frozen Borjan with a trademark shot from distance: https://gfycat.com/handmadefearfuleidolonhelvum Chances dried up after that, but
late on Cohen did well to dive low and cut out Kanga's insidious inswinging cross.

    League Path

FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) v SL Benfica (POR)* 0-2 (0-2)
    (Gilberto 9', Ramos 37')

Instead of just sitting back the Ukrainians played a surprisingly open match and
did create a couple of opportunities for themselves, but without actually scoring from them those tactics were suicidal against a team as ruthless as Benfica. The Portuguese scored with their first proper chance when a fierce shot
by their Brazilian right-back Gilberto flew through Volodymyr Shepelyev's legs and over Dynamo keeper Bushchan's palms: https://gfycat.com/decisiveunknownbichonfrise Viktor Tsyhankov had the biggest chance to equalise when he finished off a solo run with a fine curled shot that flew just wide of the upright, but minutes later Dynamo's captain and standout player sent a horrific square pass into the legs of David Neres, and the Brazilian, whose runs created huge problems for Dynamo throughout, with a deft back-heel touch left the ball for Gonçalo Ramos to fire in: https://gfycat.com/blindsoftdiamondbackrattlesnake The Ukrainians had two more decent opportunities after the break, both of which Benfica's German-Greek keeper Vlachodimos met with good saves, but overall the Portuguese controlled the match with ease.

FC VIKTORIA PLZEŇ (CZE)* v Qarabağ FK (AZE) 2-1 (0-1), 2-1 on aggregate (Kopic 58', Kliment 73'; Ozobić 38')

The Czech champions started brightly, but Qarabağ survived Viktoria's early onslaught and the match quieted down until after a free-kick Qarabağ's midfield
stalwart Filip Ozobić was given far too much time in the box to control a loose
ball on his chest, and he fired a great volley past Viktoria keeper Staněk: https://gfycat.com/heftyblackgoa That goal noticeably shocked the Czechs who grew increasingly nervous, but one mistake by Qarabağ keeper Məhəmmədəliyev (or
Mahammadaliyev, or Magomedaliyev, depending on which transcription you prefer - personally, I'm partial to all those ə's) turned the match on its head - he left
his net to deal with Václav Jemelka's long free-kick but failed to properly connect with it, and the ball fell kindly for Jan Kopic who lobbed it into the empty net: https://gfycat.com/enragedscenteddegus Momentum shifted completely after that, and another quite strange goal gave Viktoria the win: Qarabağ's Montenegrin right-back Marko Vešović failed to clear Lubor Holík's overhit cross, the loose ball was sent straight back in by Jhon Mosquera, and the substitute Jan Kliment who'd been left all alone toe-poked the ball through the legs of poor Məhəmmədəliyev: https://gfycat.com/phonylongcommabutterfly Remarkably, Kliment had pulled a hamstring just before scoring that goal and had
to be taken off again immediately afterwards. Viktoria then managed to control the result until the final whistle.

Excellent qualifying campaign (five wins, one draw) by Viktoria who reach their fourth ever CL group phase after 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2018-19. From what I gather this win was crucial for their long-term financial stability as well. Champions League millions are always welcome.

FK Crvena Zvezda (SRB)* v MACCABI HAIFA FC (ISR) 2-2 (2-1), 4-5 on aggregate (Pešić 27', Ivanić 43'; Sundgren 45'+5, Pavkov 90' (og))

Another amazingly entertaining match between those two.

Heavy rain had turned the Marakana pitch into something of a bog, and Red Star were dominating the first half, hitting the post through Guélor Kanga early on:
https://gfycat.com/shabbyrashblackbear before taking the lead when Aleksander Katai duped Maccabi's Swedish right-back Daniel Sundgren to get a cross in, and instead of whacking it away Sean Goldberg with a terrible touch inadvertently laid the ball off for Aleksandar Pešić who stabbed in from close range: https://gfycat.com/rewardingessentialalpineroadguidetigerbeetle Mirko Ivanić then missed a big chance to score a brilliant second when his volley from Osman Bukari's cross sailed just past the Israeli net: https://gfycat.com/eviltanbear but the former Montenegro international (idiot got booted from their NT following his refusal to play a Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo) still got on
the scoresheet after Frantzdy Pierrot had lost the ball near the touchline and a
fast counter attack saw Katai slipping a great back-heel towards Pešić who in turn laid the ball off for Ivanić who beat Maccabi keeper Josh Cohen with a shot
into the near top corner: https://gfycat.com/lonecavernousglowworm Nevertheless,
in stoppage time of the first half a bizarre sequence of events turned the tie around decisively - following a harmless-looking corner kick VAR suddenly intervened, and rightly so as Slavoljub Srnić had clearly handled the ball, something nobody on the pitch appeared to have noticed. Milan Borjan saved Dolev
Haziza's poorly struck spot kick, and yet fifteen seconds later Canada's number one still had to collect the ball from the back of his net as he had allowed Sundgren's shot from distance go straight through him: https://gfycat.com/wideterriblefox Football, bloody hell.

Before the return leg Red Star fans and Serbian pundits had played up their 'incredible' Marakana atmosphere that would give them the decisive advantage in this tie, but it was the Serbians who completely wilted in the second half. Borjan was forced to make a fingertip save to turn Pierre Cornud's shot against the woodwork: https://gfycat.com/handmademajordoe and in the 90th minute the substitute Milan Pavkov, four years ago Red Star's hero when he scored both goals in their CL win over Liverpool, spectacularly volleyed Omer Atzili's free-
kick into his own net: https://gfycat.com/untidyelementaryamericanpainthorse Stoppage time was predictably hectic, and stretched out to seven minutes, but Red Star's only chance to still make it to extra time was missed when Nemanja Milunović fired a loose ball miles high.

The third season in a row that Red Star stumble in the CL qualifiers, but the first time since their 'resurgence' that it happened in the play-off round. They
had eliminated Young Boys and Salzburg at this stage before.

On the other hand, the third ever CL participation for Maccabi Haifa after 2002-03 and 2009-10 (when the poor guys lost every match bar one 0-1 and went out with zero points won and zero goals scored). Both these previous qualifications had come at the expense of Austrian clubs (Sturm in 2002-03, Salzburg in 2009-10), so getting the better of Red Star was a welcome change. Also, I had been wondering whether Frantzdy Pierrot would now become the first Haitian to ever play in the Champions League, and the answer is no, he'd be the fourth. But Ali Mohamed could become the first player in the CL from Niger.

Easy win for Benfica at home, too, as they dominated from the start, saw Grimaldo's fierce free-kick brush the outside of the post, and still scored three times in fifteen minutes - Nicolás Otamendi headed in David Neres's cross:
https://gfycat.com/bestskeletalbluetonguelizard Rafa Silva punished youngster Oleksandr Syrota's hospital pass: https://gfycat.com/rewardingimpressionableiaerismetalmark and Neres capped off his performance by burying Gonçalo Ramos's assist: https://gfycat.com/selfassuredjubilantangwantibo Benfica took it a bit easier after the break, but Dynamo remained without a shot on target all match, and I'm
quite convinced that Sturm Graz wouldn't have done any better.

    (Oršić 4', Petković 35', Drmić 117', Bočkaj 120'; Grønbæk 70')

Dinamo needed just three-and-a-half minutes to level the aggregate score - a long punt by their goalkeeper Livaković was headed on by Bruno Petković, the ball fell for youngster Martin Baturina who played in Mislav Oršić to his left,
and Oršić with a little luck managed to get the ball past Alfons Sampsted and Brice Wembangomo to shovel the ball over Bodø/Glimt's sprawling keeper Nikita Khaykin: https://gfycat.com/impressiveelementaryequestrian The Croatians dominated the first half, hit the crossbar through their North Macedonian captain Ademi, and scored a superb second - following a quick break Petković collected Stefan Ristovski's cross and with the back to his net he beat Khaykin with a perfectly struck overhead kick: https://gfycat.com/unluckyslipperyasiaticmouflon But just like their beloved neighbours from Belgrade the day before Dinamo were much worse after the break. Bodø/Glimt ramped up the pressure, and Jesper will love that it was mostly the introduction of their brand-new signing from Aarhus Albert Grønbæk (the most expensive transfer in both Bodø's and AGF's history) that helped the Norwegians
find the breakthrough - the young Dane had already seen a header cleared off the
goal line by Robert Ljubičić before he managed to dupe Dinamo centre-back Dino
Perić with a great touch and got off a low shot that admittedly didn't look all
that unstoppable for Livaković: https://gfycat.com/giftedacclaimedharvestmouse That was the moment when the Norwegian champions should have gone for the jugular, but as the match wore on Bodø/Glimt likewise faded badly, and extra time was completely uneventful until out of nowhere Josip Drmić sprung his fellow substitute Mahir Emreli with a perfect through ball and while the Azeri was initially denied by Khaykin the loose ball fell again for Drmić who coolly side-stepped Konradsen and Saltnes before firing into the empty net: https://gfycat.com/bouncyuncomfortablegodwit Bodø/Glimt predictably threw everything forward in desperation in the dying seconds, but Pellegrino lost the ball in front of the Croatian box and if Petar Bočkaj hadn't finished off the two against one break Dinamo would have had a penalty: https://gfycat.com/inconsequentialdenseflatcoatretriever

A bit of a shame, I was kind of looking forward to seeing Real, Bayern, or Barcelona play on Bodø's artificial pitch north of the Arctic Circle in November.

(writing the above has now probably guaranteed that I'll get to see Sturm Graz play on Bodø's artificial pitch north of the Arctic Circle in November...)

Trabzonspor (TUR) v FC KØBENHAVN (DEN)* 0-0 (0-0), 1-2 on aggregate

Mat Ryan has been an inspired signing for FCK as Australia's number one was crucial in getting them through to the Champions League group stages for the fifth time in their history (after 2006-07, 2010-11, 2013-14, and 2016-17). In the first half he saved one-on-one against Trabzonspor's Cape Verdean forward Djaniny, tipped Andreas Cornelius's header over the bar and came to the rescue against Enis Bardhi, and his biggest save came fifteen minutes from time when after a corner kick he clawed out Stefano Denswil's header: https://gfycat.com/BlondTanAcornbarnacle

The first time since 1995-96 that there will be no Turkish team in the Champions
League. Perhaps better have a look again at that UEFA Coefficient thingy?

    League Path

PSV (NED) v RANGERS FC (SCO)* 0-1 (0-0), 2-3 on aggregate
    (Čolak 60')

PSV's best chance came late in the first half when Luuk de Jong from short range
shot straight at Rangers keeper McLaughlin, but other than that it was a poor performance by the Dutch, especially after De Jong had to be subbed off at half time due to injury, and in the second half Rangers hit the crossbar through Welshman Tom Lawrence: https://gfycat.com/felinejitterygrayling before PSV keeper Benítez (who had already been at fault for Rangers's second goal in the first leg) and former Salzburg defender Ramalho shared the blame for gifting the
Scots the goal that quite deservedly sent them through: https://gfycat.com/lonelyrectangularcranefly

The third time after 2003-04 and 2007-08 (back then Celtic qualified for the CL round of 16 and Rangers eventually made it to the UEFA Cup Final) that both Glasgow teams reach the Champions League group phase. Even though Scotland are our direct rivals in the UEFA ranking I can't really begrudge the other Europa League finalist their place. After all, it was only penalties that prevented them from being drawn from Pot 1.

I saw a fair bit of this game and it was quite entertaining. Rangers
have certainly punched above their weight in Europe recently, and though
(as in this case) they rarely look comfortable, fortune has smiled on
them on a lot of occasions, and they certainly work hard.

I read this in the Scotsman yesterday before the match,

    https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/rangers/why-scottish-football-could-be-better-served-by-rangers-and-hearts-losing-in-europe-this-week-3816226?amp

and I can sort of see his point, although he neglects to point out that
a third place finish , not completely beyond the reach of any of the
three teams, prolongs their European participation and gives the
opportunity for more coefficient points. A lot depends on the luck of
the draw. Pot 1 is a bit uneven in the CL and although pot 3 looks
formidable, clubs like Salzburg or the pretenders from Leverkusen could
slip up. There are teams in pots 2 and 3 of the EL that Hearts might
well beat at home, providing they qualify (I am not optimistic).

Glasgow teams reach the Champions League group phase.

With Glasgow, 5 cities have 2 teams in the group stage this
year. I thought that was a lot, but it turns out that was also the
case the other years Glasgow made it. In 2007-08 it was even 6 cities.

QUIZ: can you name those 6 cities from 2007-08?
(Hint: Madrid wasn't one of them)
    Wild guess:

    London
    Glasgow
Valencia if Villareal counts as part of Valencia ?
    Milan
    Lisbon
    Istanbul

You did better than me (only missed one).

Is six the record ? Seems to me the cities in contention (i.e have
more than one team that (ir)regularly qualified for the CL since at
least two teams were first allowed) would be:

Madrid, Sevilla, Moscow, Istanbul, Milan, Rome, London, Glasgow,
Manchester, Athens, Lisbon, and maybe Porto (have Boavista ever made
it?) not sure about Prague, Bucharest, and Belgrade (Partizan and Red
Star ?) or Vienna for that matter.

Bonus quiz: can you name the 3 German teams from that year?
(Hint: you'll never get this right)

Bayern, Schalke, HSV, but I am guessing. Might even have been someone
    like Hertha or Stuttgart

You did as well as me. But one of your other options would give you one more.

    Tchau!

Especially with the three teams they drew, they will definitely get a lot of ticket money, and a very quick ticket to the Europa League.

FC VIKTORIA PLZEŇ (CZE)* v Qarabağ FK (AZE) 2-1 (0-1), 2-1 on aggregate (Kopic 58', Kliment 73'; Ozobić 38')

The Czech champions started brightly, but Qarabağ survived Viktoria's early onslaught and the match quieted down until after a free-kick Qarabağ's midfield
stalwart Filip Ozobić was given far too much time in the box to control a loose
ball on his chest, and he fired a great volley past Viktoria keeper Staněk: https://gfycat.com/heftyblackgoa That goal noticeably shocked the Czechs who grew increasingly nervous, but one mistake by Qarabağ keeper Məhəmmədəliyev (or
Mahammadaliyev, or Magomedaliyev, depending on which transcription you prefer -
personally, I'm partial to all those ə's) turned the match on its head - he left
his net to deal with Václav Jemelka's long free-kick but failed to properly connect with it, and the ball fell kindly for Jan Kopic who lobbed it into the
empty net: https://gfycat.com/enragedscenteddegus Momentum shifted completely
after that, and another quite strange goal gave Viktoria the win: Qarabağ's Montenegrin right-back Marko Vešović failed to clear Lubor Holík's overhit
cross, the loose ball was sent straight back in by Jhon Mosquera, and the substitute Jan Kliment who'd been left all alone toe-poked the ball through the
legs of poor Məhəmmədəliyev: https://gfycat.com/phonylongcommabutterfly Remarkably, Kliment had pulled a hamstring just before scoring that goal and had
to be taken off again immediately afterwards. Viktoria then managed to control
the result until the final whistle.

Excellent qualifying campaign (five wins, one draw) by Viktoria who reach their
fourth ever CL group phase after 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2018-19.

Heavy rain had turned the Marakana pitch into something of a bog, and Red Star
were dominating the first half, hitting the post through Guélor Kanga early on:
https://gfycat.com/shabbyrashblackbear before taking the lead when Aleksander
Katai duped Maccabi's Swedish right-back Daniel Sundgren to get a cross in, and
instead of whacking it away Sean Goldberg with a terrible touch inadvertently
laid the ball off for Aleksandar Pešić who stabbed in from close range: https://gfycat.com/rewardingessentialalpineroadguidetigerbeetle Mirko Ivanić
then missed a big chance to score a brilliant second when his volley from Osman
Bukari's cross sailed just past the Israeli net: https://gfycat.com/eviltanbear
but the former Montenegro international (idiot got booted from their NT following his refusal to play a Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo) still got on
the scoresheet after Frantzdy Pierrot had lost the ball near the touchline and a
fast counter attack saw Katai slipping a great back-heel towards Pešić who in
turn laid the ball off for Ivanić who beat Maccabi keeper Josh Cohen with a shot
into the near top corner: https://gfycat.com/lonecavernousglowworm Nevertheless,
in stoppage time of the first half a bizarre sequence of events turned the tie
around decisively - following a harmless-looking corner kick VAR suddenly intervened, and rightly so as Slavoljub Srnić had clearly handled the ball, something nobody on the pitch appeared to have noticed. Milan Borjan saved Dolev
Haziza's poorly struck spot kick, and yet fifteen seconds later Canada's number
one still had to collect the ball from the back of his net as he had allowed Sundgren's shot from distance go straight through him: https://gfycat.com/wideterriblefox Football, bloody hell.

Before the return leg Red Star fans and Serbian pundits had played up their 'incredible' Marakana atmosphere that would give them the decisive advantage in
this tie, but it was the Serbians who completely wilted in the second half. Borjan was forced to make a fingertip save to turn Pierre Cornud's shot against
the woodwork: https://gfycat.com/handmademajordoe and in the 90th minute the substitute Milan Pavkov, four years ago Red Star's hero when he scored both goals in their CL win over Liverpool, spectacularly volleyed Omer Atzili's free-
kick into his own net: https://gfycat.com/untidyelementaryamericanpainthorse Stoppage time was predictably hectic, and stretched out to seven minutes, but
Red Star's only chance to still make it to extra time was missed when Nemanja
Milunović fired a loose ball miles high.

The third season in a row that Red Star stumble in the CL qualifiers, but the
first time since their 'resurgence' that it happened in the play-off round. They
had eliminated Young Boys and Salzburg at this stage before.

On the other hand, the third ever CL participation for Maccabi Haifa after 2002-03 and 2009-10 (when the poor guys lost every match bar one 0-1 and went
out with zero points won and zero goals scored). Both these previous qualifications had come at the expense of Austrian clubs (Sturm in 2002-03, Salzburg in 2009-10), so getting the better of Red Star was a welcome change.
Also, I had been wondering whether Frantzdy Pierrot would now become the first
Haitian to ever play in the Champions League, and the answer is no, he'd be the
fourth. But Ali Mohamed could become the first player in the CL from Niger.

    League Path

SL BENFICA (POR)* v FC Dynamo Kyiv (UKR) 3-0 (3-0), 5-0 on aggregate (Otamendi 27', Silva 40', Neres 42')

Easy win for Benfica at home, too, as they dominated from the start, saw Grimaldo's fierce free-kick brush the outside of the post, and still scored three times in fifteen minutes - Nicolás Otamendi headed in David Neres's cross:
    https://gfycat.com/bestskeletalbluetonguelizard Rafa Silva punished youngster
Oleksandr Syrota's hospital pass: https://gfycat.com/rewardingimpressionableiaerismetalmark and Neres capped off
his performance by burying Gonçalo Ramos's assist: https://gfycat.com/selfassuredjubilantangwantibo Benfica took it a bit easier
after the break, but Dynamo remained without a shot on target all match, and I'm
quite convinced that Sturm Graz wouldn't have done any better.

GNK DINAMO ZAGREB (CRO)* v FK Bodø/Glimt (NOR) 4-1 aet (2-0, 2-1), 3-2 on aggregate
    (Oršić 4', Petković 35', Drmić 117', Bočkaj 120'; Grønbæk 70')

Dinamo needed just three-and-a-half minutes to level the aggregate score - a long punt by their goalkeeper Livaković was headed on by Bruno Petković, the
ball fell for youngster Martin Baturina who played in Mislav Oršić to his left,
and Oršić with a little luck managed to get the ball past Alfons Sampsted and
Brice Wembangomo to shovel the ball over Bodø/Glimt's sprawling keeper Nikita
Khaykin: https://gfycat.com/impressiveelementaryequestrian The Croatians dominated the first half, hit the crossbar through their North Macedonian captain Ademi, and scored a superb second - following a quick break Petković
collected Stefan Ristovski's cross and with the back to his net he beat Khaykin
with a perfectly struck overhead kick: https://gfycat.com/unluckyslipperyasiaticmouflon But just like their beloved neighbours from Belgrade the day before Dinamo were much worse after the break.
Bodø/Glimt ramped up the pressure, and Jesper will love that it was mostly the
introduction of their brand-new signing from Aarhus Albert Grønbæk (the most
expensive transfer in both Bodø's and AGF's history) that helped the Norwegians
find the breakthrough - the young Dane had already seen a header cleared off the
goal line by Robert Ljubičić before he managed to dupe Dinamo centre-back Dino
Perić with a great touch and got off a low shot that admittedly didn't look all
    that unstoppable for Livaković: https://gfycat.com/giftedacclaimedharvestmouse
That was the moment when the Norwegian champions should have gone for the jugular, but as the match wore on Bodø/Glimt likewise faded badly, and extra
time was completely uneventful until out of nowhere Josip Drmić sprung his fellow substitute Mahir Emreli with a perfect through ball and while the Azeri
was initially denied by Khaykin the loose ball fell again for Drmić who coolly
side-stepped Konradsen and Saltnes before firing into the empty net: https://gfycat.com/bouncyuncomfortablegodwit Bodø/Glimt predictably threw everything forward in desperation in the dying seconds, but Pellegrino lost the
ball in front of the Croatian box and if Petar Bočkaj hadn't finished off the
two against one break Dinamo would have had a penalty: https://gfycat.com/inconsequentialdenseflatcoatretriever

A bit of a shame, I was kind of looking forward to seeing Real, Bayern, or Barcelona play on Bodø's artificial pitch north of the Arctic Circle in November.

(writing the above has now probably guaranteed that I'll get to see Sturm Graz
play on Bodø's artificial pitch north of the Arctic Circle in November...)

In
the first half he saved one-on-one against Trabzonspor's Cape Verdean forward
Djaniny, tipped Andreas Cornelius's header over the bar and came to the rescue
against Enis Bardhi, and his biggest save came fifteen minutes from time when
after a corner kick he clawed out Stefano Denswil's header: https://gfycat.com/BlondTanAcornbarnacle

I watched a few Trabzonspor games at the end of last season and the start of this one and to be quite honest I would struggle to tell you how this team managed to win the Turkish league so convincingly, other than to say the big three under performing
may have let Trabzon in by the backdoor.

The first time since 1995-96 that there will be no Turkish team in the Champions
League. Perhaps better have a look again at that UEFA Coefficient thingy?

Why? Looking at the coefficient won't change it, only producing better quality teams who can win against similarly ranked European sides and actually qualify for the group stages will change it. There are some barriers to that, some self-inflicted,
    others coming from external pressures.

I'm not overly upset that neither Turkish team qualified for the Champions League, they both ended up in the Europa League where they'll surely have a much better chance of being competitive and getting some coefficient points.
