DR Congo v Zambia is the next game and the final game of the first match day of the group stage.

Forgive me for mentioning another competition on the AFCON thread, but I’ll be watching Blackpool v Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup at the time, I’ll try to switch channels during pauses in play.

DR Congo equalised on 27 minutes when Wissu (sp?) knocked in a low cross. They also had a shot cleared off the line. Looks from the highlights like DR Congo have had more of the game.

Zambia take the lead on 23 minutes with a calamity goal. DR Congo’s keeper challenged for a ball outside the area, before he could get back Into his goal Zambia quickly started play and Kangwa chipped the ball past the retreating keeper and over two
flailing defenders into the net! DR Congo ask for a VAR review on the grounds of a foul on the keeper but the goal stands!

Cameroon are playing the Champions of Africa tomorrow! (17:00 UTC in case anyone wants to know.)

Apparently Vincent Aboubakar isn't playing. I don't know why. And I still don't know why Nicolas Nkoulou isn't in the squad. How are we going to cope without either of the players from my all-time Cameroon XI ?

Annoyingly I’ll probably be out and will miss at least the first half.

No idea why certain players haven’t been picked but hopefully it should be a good game.

What a crazy couple of minutes. Marmoush pounces on a backpass and takes the ball around the keeper to equalise for Egypt, but straight after Ghana work the ball into the Egypt area from the right, Kudus shoots from a tight angle but the shot takes a
deflection to put Ghana 2-1 up!

A 3 goal blitz in 3 minutes and neither team will be happy. Egypt
probably looked better after Salah went off injured.

I cant figure out what will happen in this cup? Is it there for Morocco
to lose or will it be one of the numerous other countries to win, since
most games are even and hard to pick a winner. With 3rd place teams qualifying, it kind of makes the group stage less interesting, but
results are so random, you really dont know who will qualify. Like
Egypt for example could finish 4th in the group.

The game between Senegal v Cameroon should be good, if Senegal win it
they will be favourites to lift the trophy, otherwise who knows.

    Algeria 2 - Burkina Faso 2

When I clicked on the link on NOW TV for this match I got Gillette Soccer Saturday (a score update show) instead.

Personal choice this time, I opted to watch a match from a competition I won't dirty this thread by naming.

    Tunisia 1 - Mali 1

I watched some of the first half but technical problems (not entirely sure if down to NOW TV or my internet provider) prevented me from watching most if it. Still, when i joined with 5 minutes left the commentator said it had been a stop start affair
with each team apparently only having one shot on goal, so doesn't sound like I missed much.

Cameroon are definitely not the best team in Africa at the moment. It was clear from this match that Senegal are a better team. Other than the goal, did Cameroon even have a shot on target?

I haven't looked up the stats but as I recall Cameroon were just getting back into the game and very nearly scored just before Senegal broke away for the third. It could have worked out very differently.

Were Senegal the better team on the night? Yes. Does an Indomitable Lion give up hope based on one performance? Never!

Namibia have responded well to going behind and have come close to scoring a couple of times.

    South Africa 1 - Namibia 0

    EDIT:

As soon as I type that South Africa break away, the ball is crossed from the right to Zwane who shoots past the keeper to double South Africa’s lead!

The business end of the group stage starts and Ecquatorial Guinea lead hosts Ivory Coast 1-0 at half time. EG worked the ball into the box well to set up Nsue for a simple finish on 42 minutes.

In the other game Nigeria lead Guinea-Bissau 1-0.

If these are the results at full time Ecquatorial Guinea and Nigeria will advance to the second round, Ivory Coast would have to hope to finish as one of the higher ranked third placed sides to advance.

What drama! Egypt practically play the last 10 my minutes in Cape Verde’s area but just as it seems like they won’t make the breakthrough a direct ball finds Mostafa Mohammed who jumps high to poke the ball over the keeper and into the net.......

    ....BUT.......

......there is VAR review for a possible handball...........Mohammed had his arm out.......VAR review goes on forever......first angle doesn’t look handball.......

.......but the second angle looks like the ball hit his arm!

    ........VAR decision........

    Goal given!

    2-1 Egypt!

But Cape Verde then equalise in injury time following a goal mouth scramble! 2-2!

And in the other game Mozambique have come back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Ghana!

If things finish as they stand it’s 1st Cape Verde, 2nd Ghana. Egypt would be third with 3 points but a better GD than Ivory Coast, so they might have half a chance of going through?

Mozambique’s injury time equaliser sent Egypt through at the expense of Ghana. It also did Ivory Coast a favour in that Ghana are behind them in the third placed team rankings (Egypt would have been ahead of them), if another third placed team finishes
on less than 3 points minus 3 GD Ivory Coast are through.

Ghana could still go through but need two third placed teams to do worse than 2 points and a minus 2 GD.

Yeah pretty wild ending to both games.

When I posted Ghana were leading 2-0 and Egypt losing 1-0, with around
20 minutes left I think. Which would have meant Ghana second and Egypt
third with 2 points (probably not getting a best 3rd place),

Tomorrow's games should be interesting. In Grup C Senegal will end up
first or second, Guinea can end in 1st, 2nd or 3rd ( and should qualify
with a best third place finish), so both will qualify. The The Gambia
can not qualify and Cameroon can finish second on GD if they score a two
goal victory over the the gambia, otherwise they need to win to hope to qualify.

    Senegal 1-0 up against Guinea.

Which means if Cameroon score another they would go through in second place on goals scored.

However, as soon as I type that The Gambia equalise with Jallow’s volley. They had been looking dangerous for a while.

Cameroon now third with two points and minus 2 GD, which would probably see them knocked out.

So, when I was tipping Ghana to win the African Cup of nations and they kept losing in the semi-final, and then I didn't tip them to win it and they finished runners-up, so I tipped them to win it again, only for them to lose in the semi-final again, and
I asked when Ghana were going to finally win it, I was told (by Sven I think) "When you stop tipping". Well I haven't tipped them to win it since about 2017, and they're getting worse, not better! What's going on?

Ghana could still go through but need two third placed teams to do worse than 2 points and a minus 2 GD.
