• English Player In Europe In The 70s?

From anders t@21:1/5 to All on Tue Jan 9 21:56:09 2024
I seem to remember that there was a high-ish profile English player playing
in Europe continental in the 70s. (I'm not talking about Kevin Keegan.)

I think he was a bit controversial and didn't play in the NT (so much).

Google is not my friend here.

    Laurie Cunningham?

No, not him. I get this feeling that the firstname and lastname starts with
the same letter, but not sure.

Mark McGhee played for Hamburg, but he was Scottish, and that was not
    until the mid 80s.

Tony Woodcock (Köln for a while) ?

If he was capped while abroad, he ought to be in this list:

    https://www.football365.com/news/ranking-every-foreign-based-england-player

The only one that fulfils your 70's criterion and hasn't been named yet is David Wilson.

No, and none on the list.

    This is so frustrating!

Malcolm MacDonald. Played in Sweden at the end of his career, capped 14
times for England, prolific goalscorer for Newcastle ?

He does have the right timing (1979) and both names starting with the
    same letter.

    Sorry, but no.

Dave Watson ? Left Man City to play for Werder Bremen but did not stay
long. Then moved back to Southampton. Wiki says he only played 2 games
in the Bundesliga. Did play for England in Euro 1980.

Sounds like he could be your man ?

Apparently the most capped England player never to play at a world cup.
This would still be true even if Kevin Keegan had not got on for a few
minutes as a sub vs. Spain in 1982.
