• Manchester City - Internazionale Champions League Final [R]

From Real Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 8 15:23:07 2023
Saturday 10th June, Kickoff 8pm GMT, 9pm CET

Ataturk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul (capacity 74753)

Inter won the European Cup in 1964 and 1965, and the Champions League in 2010. They also won the UEFA Cup in 1991, 1994 and 1998.

In contrast Manchester City's European trophy cabinet has a lot of empty space, with the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup being the only European trophy to their name.

However, despite Inter being way ahead in terms of European trophies won, Manchester City go into this game as favourites. They've been knocking on the door for a while now, and came close in 2021 (finalists) and 2022 (semi finalists).

Will Manchester City win their first Champions League and make it two out of two for the Premier League in this year's European finals?

Or will Inter upset the odds and win their fourth European Cup and give Serie A a boost after defeats for Roma and Fiorentina in this year's other European finals?

    We'll find out on Saturday!

Yeah, you’re probably not far off there. On the BBC sports news they conceded English fans were quite conflicted over who to support, particularly in light of the allegations regarding Man City breaching financial regulations.

Not a city fan, but I admire the way they play, and quite like Pep. I
have an irrational bias against Inter, for which I partly blame
Futbolmetrix, and partly the way they played, and won kind of
    undeservedly vs. Bayern.

So I am kind of hoping for, but not necessarily expecting, a City win.

I think Inter probably would be better off by not showing up. :) 0 - 3 is not such a bad scoreline after all.

And it goes without saying that I also hope City will win. More precisely, I hope that they'll deliver a similar if not better performance than in the second leg with Real and win.
What I really wouldn't like would be that Inter park the bus and prevail by hacking. You know, Gentile style. And the ref lets it happen. I don't think it will be like this because City will be too good, the amount of necessary hacking would be massive,
and it's the UCL final, all eyes will be on it. So I hope and expect a good match in which the best team wins.

I very much hope that this won't be Guardiola's mindset. City have lost matches this year to Brentford and Tottenham (teams that, like Inter, use a 5-3-2 formation), they can easily lose to Inter.

In fact, with all the triumphalism going on around the Blues, I am revising my sophisticated prediction for the final: City 45%, Inter 55%.

You mean excluding Liverpool/Manchester United/Arsenal(?)/Juventus/Milan fans?

I would guess that in Italy, excluding Milan and Juve fans, maybe 50-60% would support Inter. Because City have been more dominant in England, I would guess that the fraction of non Liverpool/non-ManU fans supporting City would be more like 30-40%

The best thing about the first half was the Paramount + and ebay sponsorship on Inter’s shirt.

    Much more balanced than expected.
Both teams had one good chance each, I'd say. There was a shot by Haaland that could have been better, and there was a moment when the City keeper was way out and an italian noticed it and tried to capitalise on it, but it went far away. City more
dominant, had a few more half-chances but nothing very dangerous.

As for the hacking, Inter did some, didn't appear to be excessive but I have the feeling that if I looked at it in more detail it would be more. Whatever. I didn't quite get it why KDB had to be subbed, didn't show anything on TV. Losing him might prove
costly. Anyway, so far there didn't seem to be excessive hacking. Though 3-4 cards would have been in order (one of them for City).

Let's see what the second half will bring.

City is looking like Juve in one of their countless EC1/CL finals (if those finals had actually happened. of coursr)

City's expected goals for and against
vs teams playing with 4 at the back: 2.33-0.88
vs teams playing with 3 at the back: 1.63 - 1.29

    Revised sophisticated prediction:
    Man City 40%, Inter 60%
    (:-)))))) Yeah right.
Of course, surprises do happen, but I'll be very surprised if it happens this time.
Inter easily the better team in the first 15 minutes. I went too low with my predictions
De Bruyne out injured in the 35th minute. Updated Sophisticated predictions: Inter 75%, City 25%
    HT 0-0

Losing him might
prove costly. Anyway, so far there didn't seem to be excessive hacking. Though 3-4 cards would have been in order (one of them for City).

Let's see what the second half will bring.
Way too many mistakes by City. In good offensive positions. (Plus a horrible defensive blunder that almost cost them a goal.) They didn't do them against Real.

Finally some dangerous play in Inter's box.
    1-0 City.

Inter had a corner in the last seconds of injury time, but the resulting header was just palmed off the line by Ederson to deny what would have been a last second equaliser.

    FT: Manchester City 1 - Internazionale 0

Manchester City win the Champions League and complete a treble of competition wins this season.

This was a pretty terrible, error strewn match. Really feel I wasted my

Nonetheless, let us take inspiration from Manchester City finally winning the Champions League. They've shown us tonight that if you spend, spend, spend, and spend just a bit more...................then one day you can achieve your dreams.

Oh well, so maybe I overrated Inter a little bit. Even though they had two massive chances to equalize, but it wasn't Lukaku's day. I am sooo disappointed! Three Italian teams reach the final of European competitions, and they all come up empty-handed.
    What bad luck!

    Inter worthy adversaries nevertheless.

Inter gave an excellent account of themselves. Not because of the big chances they had at the end, which came about by throwing the kitchen sink at City, but by denying City the ability to play their game pretty much most of the game.

As for City, they looked as flat as they did against United in the FA Cup final. Almost makes me wonder if it isn't just physical and mental exhaustion catching up with them, just like it did with Liverpool at this stage of the quadruple quest last
season. If so, fingers crossed that some of this spills into next season like it did for Liverpool. But it obviously won't because they'll just bring in 200M+ worth of fresh blood this summer.

Going back to Inter, good to see a revival of the A-grade shithousery that Serie A was renowned for at the turn of the century. The way Barella, Acerbi, and Dimarco all went down in a heap of agony after being barely breathed upon would have brought
tears to even Diego Simeone's eyes.

Player-wise, Onana was super impressive, but Lautaro Martinez has to be the most overrated striker in world football at the moment.

City more dominant, had a few more half-chances but nothing very dangerous.

As for the hacking, Inter did some, didn't appear to be excessive but I have the feeling that if I looked at it in more detail it would be more. Whatever. I didn't quite get it why KDB had to be subbed, didn't show anything on TV. Losing
him might prove costly.

    1-0 City.
Rodri puts Man City 1-0 up after 68 minutes, then at the other end Brozovic’s header hits the crossbar. Inter have wasted a few chances to score tonight.
    And it's final. 1-0 City.
    Triumph of Pep.

In the end the gulf in class wasn't that big but City won't mind. They got what they wanted. But I have to say, they didn't play nearly as well as against Madrid. Maybe it was Inter's defense too but they did many more mistakes themselves. At some
    point it even looked doubtful.
    Inter worthy adversaries nevertheless.
Inter gave an excellent account of themselves. Not because of the big chances they had at the end, which came about by throwing the kitchen sink at City, but by denying City the ability to play their game pretty much most of the game.
I think it's mostly City's fault. Their game was full of errors. If they had played like this against Real I suspect it would still have been 4-0, but the other way around. :) Luckily for them they met a team they could still beat, even in this form.
As for City, they looked as flat as they did against United in the FA Cup final. Almost makes me wonder if it isn't just physical and mental exhaustion catching up with them, just like it did with Liverpool at this stage of the quadruple quest last
    season.
My guess is they had a UCL-winning complex. Fortunately, they met a team some distance below them and could finally win it, so they probably got rid of it. We'll see in coming years.

Plus, they probably did relax a bit, knowing it's Inter they have to play with. They tried not to, of course, but it's only human. In the end they got the result.

Have you seen the spending page in the other thread ? I'm not sure if it's all OK but I guess the part with United and City being at the top of spending in the last 10 years, in this order, is true. Just the results are very different. Ferguson's era is
long gone, now this is the reality.

I don't know how much it means to football history. They did the treble which is rare, and shows they were truly and by far the strongest. If they don't follow it up with a few other UCL wins I guess it won't mean very much.

Maybe I said this partially as an anti-weaufx (*maybe*!), but there is apparently some truth to this:

    https://twitter.com/BassTunedToRed/status/1667457203672866818?s=20

City's expected goals for and against
vs teams playing with 4 at the back: 2.33-0.88
vs teams playing with 3 at the back: 1.63 - 1.29

    Revised sophisticated prediction:
    Man City 40%, Inter 60%
    (:-)))))) Yeah right.
Of course, surprises do happen, but I'll be very surprised if it happens this time.
Inter easily the better team in the first 15 minutes. I went too low with my predictions
De Bruyne out injured in the 35th minute. Updated Sophisticated predictions: Inter 75%, City 25%
    HT 0-0

The best thing about the first half was the Paramount + and ebay sponsorship on Inter’s shirt.
