• Brighton - Man U [R]

From Al Kamista@21:1/5 to All on Thu May 4 17:19:58 2023
    1-0 Brighton score a PK in 90 + 9!

Big blow to United's title challenge. But they should be a shoe-in for top 4, 4 points ahead of the next team with game in hand.

Brighton have a game in hand over Man U, and two games in hand over
Liverpool. So they are not mathematically out of the picture (though I
have not looked at who they have to play yet).

And it is shoo-in, not shoe-in. Look it up if you don't believe me. I
vaguely recall the expression comes from horse racing.

    Newcastle, Man City, Arsenal. Oof.

    Ciao,

As Werner points out, their schedule is brutal. Liverpool's chances are super slim too. 14% according to 538, which sounds about right. If they win their last 4 games (big if) then they end up at 71 points. Seeing Liverpool's huge GD advantage, United
will then realistically need 72 points. That's 9 points in 5 games. So 3 wins, or 2 wins and 3 draws. Looking at their soft schedule, it's impossible to see that not happening. Congratulations to them and Newcastle.

I actually watched this game with Mr. Lily White. Brighton are a fun team to watch and play a very risky, yet entertaining style. Even though I thought Brighton were the better team, you just kinda expected Manchester to steal a goal and win. In a
perverse way, justice was done and Brighton won with a terrible Penalty call in the final seconds. Brighton seem to be doing it with young South American players, which was nice to see.
