• Peurto Rico Diving

From James@21:1/5 to All on Tue Aug 25 19:58:26 2015
Are there any dive operators on the north shores of Puerto Rico? The
only ones that come up in a search were on the southern side of the
island. We're going to be there in Nov. Thanks, Jim

There had been a dive op that was in the Raddison Normandie in San
Juan ... IIRC, its located just a bit east of San Juan.

They offered a shore dive in their little lagoon/harbor ... as a
"take it or leave it" after they had previously promised our small
group (3 of us) they would run their boat for the 3 of us no matter
what. Wasn't cheap for what it was, either.

From a post I made here back in 1996:

"It was a shallow, murky, trash-filled lagoon. Yeah, we found one
seahorse. Outside the lagoon, the viz doubled to maybe 30ft or so
and it looked like a good dive starting point (finally), but the DM
pretty much was at a loss as to where to go from there, so after
lounging for awhile, we came back in."

"It was the next day that the newspaper's headlines were talking about
how toxic the pollution was in San Juan's harbor. IMHO, this dive
site should be nominated for the "Crappy Divesite" Web Page - I've
been to a few of the sites on that list and I would have preferred to
have dived them instead of here (such as Shark River Inlet, NJ)."

"If there's a next time for PR, I'd try the islands off the NE; the
coast to the W of Ponce is supposed to be pretty good, but they got hurricaned this year, so..."

I've not been back, but I did see some footage from the west coast a
year ago from a snorkeling coworker who had a GoPro ...viz looked
pretty good close in to shore (they were having fun jumping off of a
    fishing? pier).

Thanks for the heads up. We're going to be at Shacks Beach in Isabela
which about 2 hours from San Juan and the area where most of the other
dive operators are so we might not get any diving done. Jim

IMO, Isabela is far enough away from San Juan that the lousy
conditions I saw in that region don't apply. As such, I'd
not give up trying to find a potential operator if you're
looking to get in a dive or two.

Doing some quick searches, these two pop up:

    http://www.tainodivers.com/home/home.html

    http://www.technicaldivingpr.com/

They're both on the northern end of the west coast; the
first one is in Ricon, which is 40km (~1 hr) from
Isabala, and the latter is around 20km (25 minutes).

FWIW, I've heard some pretty good things about Ricon
for diving .. I think it is one of the jump-off points
to get out to the islands in the Mona Passage.
