We are featuring the products that won the Radio World Best of Show Award
at the recent NAB Show. Winners were chosen by a panel of radio engineers
and RW editorial staff for their innovation, feature set, cost efficiency
and performance in serving the industry.
The original Nautel AUI launched in 2009 and was remarkable for elevating
the state of transmitter remote monitoring and control.
The company has rewritten the AUI with a new operating system and
architecture. It comes standard on new Nautel transmitters and is a free upgrade for existing AUI-enabled transmitters.
The AUI is accessed locally via a LAN connection or remotely over the
internet using a browser. Features include secure HTML5 AUI;
instrumentation including spectrum analyzer and Lissajous; RDS, SNMP and high-end presets; user-defined Presets with automated Scheduler;
customizable automated notifications; Nautel PhoneHome; HD Radio support;
and optional Orban Inside audio processing
The AUI is in beta and will be rolled out shortly.

A Digital Audio Levels Reminder
Posted: 17 Jun 2022 02:00 AM PDT
https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/tech-tips/a-digital-audio-levels-reminder
One in a series of short audio tips that have appeared in the Alabama Broadcasters Association “Monday Morning Coffee and Technical Notes” e-newsletter.
It’s easy to understand a correlation of the analog signal level to the digital signal level by going number-by-number or level-by-level.
Decibel full-scale (dBFS) is a unit of measure for the amplitude of digital audio signals. It is critical to understand that though digital and analog signals have similarities, their characteristics differ significantly. Zero dBFS occurs when all the binary digits (bits) making up the digital signal
are on or read as 1s and not 0s in computer talk.
All the bits available to make up the signal have been used at this finite point and no additional headroom exists. Trying to increase the level
simply doesn’t work and causes immediate distortion.
Another major difference that should be noted is at the point of digital
signal overload at the 0 dBFS level. Should an analog signal reach its
maximum amplitude capacity, distortion will creep into the signal, most
likely at a gradual and perhaps indistinguishable rate, until the
distortion is audible after initial overload is reached and then exceeded.
This process is different and more forgiving to the ear than reaching
digital overload at 0 dBFS.
[Read More Tech Tips Here]
When an unprocessed digital signal clips at this level, distortion is immediately apparent. The encoder has no more bits to use for the “digital word” and you end up with digital distortion, which can be much more distracting than analog distortion.
Larry Wilkins is director of engineering services for the Alabama
Broadcasters Association and a past recipient of the Radio World Excellence
in Engineering Award.

Best of Show: Nautel VX Series Transmitters
Posted: 17 Jun 2022 02:00 AM PDT
https://www.radioworld.com/resource-center/awards/best-of-show-awards-nab/best-of-show-nautel-vx-series-transmitters
We are featuring the products that won the Radio World Best of Show Award
at the recent NAB Show. Winners were chosen by a panel of radio engineers
and RW editorial staff for their innovation, feature set, cost efficiency
and performance in serving the industry.
Ten FM analog models make up the new VX Series line, in power outputs
ranging from 150 W to 5 kW. Compact rack footprint is part of the appeal,
with depths of only 20 to 25 inches.
The architecture of the series incorporates state-of-the-art DSP, power
supply and FET technology. The RF power chain is based on a new
high-voltage FET and is mated with dual-core DSP, which Nautel says
provides lots of headroom for future enhancements. Titanium-grade
industrial power supplies are hot-swappable with front-panel fingertip
removal. Control is via the new HTML5 Advanced User Interface.
Deliveries of 150 W to 2 kW models is anticipated later this year, with 3
kW to 5 kW coming in early 2023.

A promotional image from Waves Audio.
Waves Audio said its recently announced Cloud MX Audio Mixer will support deployment on Amazon Web Services for cloud-based productions.
While not targeted to radio, announcements around this product echo trends we’ve heard about a lot lately so we are sharing them.
“As broadcast and media organizations transition to cloud-based production environments, they need to meet the growing demand for feature-rich content
and over-the-top (OTT) distribution,” Waves said in its press release.
“At the core of these next-generation workflows are cloud-based production tools that enable remote integration (REMI) and distributed operations.”
As we reported earlier, this is a “mixing as a service” product for which the base service starts at $750 per month or $7,500 per year.
“Waves Cloud MX Audio Mixer is utilized by customers on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) to ensure that secure, reliable,
high-performance and cost-effective compute infrastructure is available throughout an event,” it said in the release.
“Customers can use the mixer on instances in any of the available Amazon
EC2 geographical locations to optimize network performance between the
cloud, remote operators, and on-premise equipment.”

Registration Opens for AES New York
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 02:04 PM PDT

The Audio Engineering Society has opened registration for AES New York 2022.
The convention will be co-located with NAB Show New York, with a common exhibition floor. Registration for the NAB event opens June 22.
AES will be at the Javits Center on Oct. 19–20, “with pre-and post-show activities on the 18th and 21st, followed by an online component, Oct. 26– 27.”
Convention Chair Jonathan Wyner said in a release that AES plans to
continue offering convention content via a fall component, though “[T]here’s just nothing that completely replaces gathering as a community and interacting face-to-face.”
One of the things to watch this fall is the possible impact on these events
of the decision by NAB to discontinue its annual fall Radio Show. We know
that NAB has moved its annual Marconi Awards ceremony to its New York conference.

FCC Warns Operators to Halt Alleged Pirate Broadcasting

A private citizen and a real estate agent were the latest individuals to be notified by the Federal Communications Commission’s Enforcement Bureau that their alleged illegal pirate radio operation must be shut down.
In March 2022, Monel Meriland of Ivy Street in Newark, N.J., was
investigated after a complaint was made about an unlicensed FM broadcast station operating on frequency 90.9 MHz. Agents from the New York Office
used direction-finding techniques to determine that radio signals on that frequency were emanating from the Ivy Street property.
That same month, the New York Office investigated a complaint about anther unlicensed FM station. Again using direction-finding techniques, the agents determined that radio signals on frequency 105.5 MHz were emanating from a property belonging to R&T Realty Associates Inc. on 41st Avenue in Queens, N.Y.
In both of these cases, the FCC database shows no license had been issued
for a radio broadcast station at either location.
[Related: FCC Plans to Hire to Fight Pirate Radio]
The Enforcement Bureau reminded the two entities in a Notice of Illegal
Pirate Radio Broadcasting that radio broadcast stations operating on
certain frequencies — including 90.9 and 105.5 MHz — must be properly licensed by the FCC. While FCC Rules do allow for exceptions for extremely low-powered devices, the agents determined that those exceptions do not
apply in either of these cases.
The bureau also notified Meriland and R&T that they may be fined up to $2 million if it is found that they willfully or knowingly allowed for an
illegal pirate radio station to operate at their location.
[Related: FCC Sends Pirate Radio Notices to Property Owners]
This is not the first time in the last few months that agents traced
signals of alleged pirate radio operations to property owners, including property owners in Baltimore as well as those in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Oregon.
The bureau has given Meriland and R&T Associates 10 days to respond and to provide evidence that they are no longer operating an illegal station. The bureau also is asking those who own or manage one of these properties to identify any additional individuals who may have allegedly engaged in
illegal pirate radio broadcasting.
