Stern: So from a streaming perspective we are investing significantly to be able to say any radio broadcaster that wants to step into global
distribution and the advantages of that with either an ad-based model or subscription-based model, we have multiple opportunities. And we are able
to give them deep insights and data about those listeners the likes of
which they have never seen before. And our sense is that as those elements
come together, there are going to be real opportunities for growth in the industry.
An image from the TuneIn app.

One thing I see happening right now to people who listen to a variety of
audio is that they are drowning in curation. If I want a specific type of
music I need to go find that. If a person wants to create a listening experience with podcasts it takes a lot of time to figure out which
podcasts they like. I believe a strength of radio is letting the customer
just tune in and consume a lot of great content without a lot of curation.
All our customers need to do is open the app.

RW: You mentioned podcasts. TuneIn carries over 5.5 million of them. You recently launched TuneIn On Air as a means to put emerging content
producers on equal footing with major broadcasters across the U.S. What is it?

Stern: I think it is part of living our mission. We want to work both with established broadcasters who have an existing audience, but we recognized
we were not doing enough for emerging broadcasters. And they might be with educational institutions, college radio stations, community radio stations,
not for profit or podcasters. This program is really a way to create a
front door for those emerging voices and helping cultivate the next
generation of talent within the broadcast industry using the TuneIn
    platform.

This is the freeway really for those emerging voices. They’ll have the same access to all the digital distribution channels and hopefully find it
easier to gain an audience with a more turnkey solution.

RW: What has surprised you the most about the business of TuneIn?

Stern: I came in right at the start of the pandemic. As I reached out and connected with our broadcast partners. And I’m talking all over the world.
I thought perhaps as a company we had not led with enough vision and
provided enough partnership to broadcasters in the process. So I rolled up
my sleeves and met with as many broadcast partners as possible and attended trade events sharing the story of TuneIn. We don’t create content or have radio stations, but we love radio and hope to chart a new future together.

RW: You were formerly chief product officer at Audible. What kind of
insights did you bring to your leadership role at TuneIn?

Stern: I’ve spent the last 15 years of my career working at companies
focused on making this digital transformation of various mediums. I was at Amazon Studios, the film and television arm of the company; andAudible the spoken word digital audiobooks publishing arm of that company. And at Sony where I focused on media products for PlayStation.

The reality is we didn’t reinvent those mediums in any significant way. The content is largely the same, but we did make everything around the medium easier for the customer to use. Digital distribution literally takes all of
the friction out of discovery and consumption from a customers’ standpoint. Data allows content producers to better understand who their listeners are
and how to serve them better.

So I think a lot of that parallels the radio industry right now. We are not
out to change radio. I think a much better thesis to start from is we are
going to take what people love and make it better.

    Posted: 25 May 2022 02:00 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/programming-and-sales/kfh-radio-celebrates-100-years-on-air

KFH Radio in Wichita, Kansas turns 100 this week. In addition to the
stations week-long celebrations, Audacy honored the milestone birthday on Monday.

KFH, formerly WEAH, was launched on May 26, 1922 for the purpose of broadcasting crop and market reports. It was the first station in Kansas to
add FM to its broadcast service and to originate a network broadcast that
    was carried nationwide.
“As the oldest radio station in Kansas, KFH Radio is very much a key piece
of a fabric of this region and the city of Wichita,” said Jackie Wise,
senior vice president and market manager at Audacy Wichita. “We’re honored to have been able to carry that baton for 100 years now, serving our
community in key moments throughout history.

The station is currently airing short-form audio clips that spotlight some
of the most memorable moments in station and Wichita history, including coverage of World War II, Wichita State University athletics, national attention from the 1938 Orson Welles “War of the Worlds” and more.
During KFHs centennial celebration, special guests, including local
officials and former station personalities, are contributing to on-air programming. The station will also pay homage to the past through a
historical content series on its Facebook page. For a full station history, click here.
Additionally, the state of Kansas has declared May 26 as “KFH Day,” which will recognize the station’s place in Wichita history and the role it plays in the community. The Sedgwick County Historical Museum will feature an
    exhibit to highlight KFH Radio.

FCC Sticks to Geotargeting Comment Deadline

    Posted: 24 May 2022 10:34 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/headlines/fcc-sticks-to-geotargeting-comment-deadline

Image from GBS filing of test results at KSJO(FM) showing the multipath
family of curves. Click image to read the report.

The FCC Media Bureau will not give NPR and the NAB extra time to comment in
    its geotargeting FM booster proceeding.

As we reported earlier, the commission is taking fresh comments right now
in response to two test reports submitted by GeoBroadcast Solutions about
its technology. The comment deadline is June 6, with replies due June 21.

NPR and the National Association of Broadcasters had asked for an extra two weeks to study the results, saying the technical material is voluminous and citing problems in locating information in the commission’s electronic databases.

“GeoBroadcast notes that it filed its most recent test report on March 30, 2022, and that the public has had ample opportunity to analyze its test results,” the Media Bureau now has ruled.

“We find NPR and NAB have not shown good cause in the Extension Request for extending the comment deadlines. It is the commission’s general policy that requests for extension of time will not be routinely granted. We agree with GeoBroadcast that the public interest will be best served by expeditious
review of the GeoBroadcast test reports and other material in the record.”

The National Association of Broadcasters called the decision “both
surprising and disappointing, especially since the commission has provided numerous extensions to GBS totaling over two years in length. We are not
aware of a situation where the FCC has denied such a reasonable request, especially in a technical proceeding where documents were not readily
    available for examination.”

NAB, which is on record against the idea, urged the commission not to make
“a rush to judgment on an issue that presents such significant concerns for the broadcast radio industry.”

Comments in this proceeding are to be filed in the  the commission’s ECFS system; refer to MB Dockets 20-401 and 17-105.

NAB Leadership Foundation Honors Jos Andrs

    Posted: 24 May 2022 10:20 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/people-news/nab-leadership-foundation-honors-jose-andres

The National Association of Broadcasters Leadership Foundation will present José Andrés with the Service to America Leadership Award, the foundation’s highest individual honor, next month. The award, which honors an
individual’s commitment to advocacy and public service, will be presented during the Celebration of Service to America Awards on June 7 at The Anthem
    in Washington, D.C.

Andrés is highly acclaimed globally for his avant-garde cuisine served
through his restaurant collective, ThinkFoodGroup, said the NABLF. Twice honored in Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” and a New York Times best-selling author, Andrés was awarded by President Barack Obama in 2015 the National Humanities Medal, which honors individuals or groups
whose work has deepened the nations understanding of the humanities.

Through his non-profit, World Central Kitchen (WCK), Andrés leads
humanitarian efforts to feed communities in need in times of crisis.

Andrés and his team have served fresh meals to those affected by man-made
and natural disasters across six continents, including serving over 3.6
million meals to those affected in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria in 2017,
    said the NABLF.

Per a NABLF press release, WCK has also partnered with local leaders,
farmers and restaurants to help those experiencing food insecurity caused
by the COVID-19 pandemic or the ongoing turmoil in eastern Europe.

Andrés and WCK have been on the ground in Ukraine cooking nonstop since
late February, where they have served nearly 30 million meals.

Andrés’ work with WCK is the focus of the upcoming documentary film “We Feed People.” Produced by National Geographic and directed by Academy Award-winner Ron Howard, the film will premiere on Disney+ May 27, 2022.

NABLF President Michelle Duke said Andrés is a culinary trailblazer, both through his dedication in the kitchen and in serving communities in need
    around the world.

“When disaster strikes, the World Central Kitchen has stepped in to ensure communities have the strength to rebuild and that no one goes hungry, said Duke. NABLF is honored to celebrate Andrés’ devotion to combatting food insecurity with the Service to America Leadership Award.”

Previous recipients of the Service to America Leadership Award include “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda, award-winning-artist John Legend and Grammy-winning musician Jon Bon Jovi.

A special one-hour production of the June 7 awards ceremony will be
broadcast nationally on television, radio and digital platforms in summer
2022. Actor and television host Mario Lopez will emcee the event, with
awards presented by musical artists, journalists and radio personalities.

For more information about the awards and event, visit the Service to
    America website.
