NAB Show Gets Underway, West Hall Opens

The 2022 NAB Show kicked off on Sunday after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

At 10 a.m., show attendees streamed into the North and Central exhibition halls. This year, however, the Las Vegas Convention Center also had an
    exciting new addition to offer.

Sunday morning, NAB President/CEO Curtis LeGeyt and Chris Brown, NABs VP of global connections and events, cut the ribbon commemorating the shows
expansion into West Hall, which was under construction when broadcasters
    last visited.

While exhibitors and broadcasters alike expressed their excitement for the
NAB Shows return in recent months, the turnout this year is significantly smaller than in years past. NAB spokeswoman Ann Marie Cumming said the show organizers estimate attendance will be around 55,000; in comparison, in
2019, the number of registered attendees was 91,460, with 92,912 attendees
    in 2018.

Many exhibitors came with fewer staff and had smaller booths than normal. Radio manufacturers are more spread out this year, rather than
mostly concentrated in a Radio Hall. There are familiar radio manufacturers
to be seen in all three of the major halls.

    Thomson Broadcast Will Acquire GatesAir

    Posted: 23 Apr 2022 04:51 PM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/business-and-law/thomson-broadcast-will-acquire-gatesair

Thomson Broadcast will acquire GatesAir, in a deal involving two
manufacturers with deep radio and TV roots.

The companies announced a definitive agreement for Thomson to acquire
GatesAir from the Gores Group. Terms were not made public. The transaction
is expected to close in the second half, pending regulatory approvals.

In 2012 Gores purchased Harris Broadcast Communications from Harris Corp.
for $225 million. In 2014 Harris Broadcast then was split into Imagine Communications and GatesAir.

GatesAir is a manufacturer of products for over-the-air radio and
television broadcasting; it is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
It is headquartered in Mason, Ohio, with manufacturing in Quincy, Ill.

Thomson Broadcast is headquartered in Paris, France, with U.S. operations
in West Palm Beach, Fla. Thomson too is more than 100 years old. It was responsible for the first live radio transmission from the Eiffel Tower in
1937 under the name “Compagnie Génerale de Télégraphie Sans Fil” (General
Wireless Telegraphy Company). It has  experience in DTV and AM radio
including DRM.  “Through the development of the Pulse Step Modulation (PSM) in radio and creating the automatic Digital Adaptive Pre-Correction (DAP), Thomson Broadcast has largely contributed to shaping the transmission
market in both TV and radio.”

Thomson said the acquisition will help it meet its goal to establish itself
in the U.S. market, which it set four years ago.

The announcement was made by Bruce D. Swail, CEO of GatesAir, and Edward Johnson, senior managing director at The Gores Group, who said, “We have no doubt GatesAir will continue on its successful trajectory and strengthen
its market leadership alongside Thomson Broadcast.”

According to the announcement, GatesAir has enjoyed strong recent growth
thanks in part to the North American Spectrum Repack program.

“GatesAir worked with Bowen Inc. on a robust process which involved
interest from several strategic and financial parties, with Thomson
Broadcast prevailing due to its highly complementary fit.”
