ENCO to Preview WebDAD 3.0 in Las Vegas

    Posted: 16 Apr 2022 04:00 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/products/enco-to-preview-webdad-3-0-in-las-vegas

ENCO will preview WebDAD 3.0 at the NAB Show.

The company has talked about this new version of its remote automation
control interface in recent months, but the convention will provide a first in-person look. V3.0 is scheduled to be released this summer, and an
upgrade path from current WebDAD installations will be available.

The new iteration “will feature a completely revamped architecture designed to improve the user experience while laying the foundation for future functionality and scalability.”

[Related: Read our exhibitor preview with ENCO’s Ken Frommert]

President Ken Frommert said, “We have rebuilt WebDAD 3.0 from the ground up on modern development practices to address the intrinsic role that remote access now plays in today’s media operations, and to provide an extensible platform for future growth.”
ENCO will preview the next generation of its WebDAD remote radio automation control interface at the 2022 NAB Show.

The browser-based user interface is redesigned. “Layout changes enable more intuitive operation and streamline workflows for key features, while
selectable dark/light modes let users tailor the look to their preferences
and working environment, the company said. Reactive forms retain
information across interface screens, minimizing the need to re-enter the
same data in different sections of the workflow. Performance optimizations
also improve the responsiveness of the interface to users’ actions.”

Version 3.0 also offers more granular control over user permissions, such
as the ability to restrict access to specified libraries, functions and systems. Added support for third-party accessibility assistance tools
improves usability for people with impairments or disabilities, the company said.

“Other updates include a simplified deployment model for easier
installation and upgrades, as well as enhanced cross-browser support.”

ENCO said WebDAD also serves as the user interface for DAD Disaster
Recovery, a cloud-based companion to DAD automation systems.

NAB to FCC: Time To Wrap Up Ownership Rule Review

    Posted: 15 Apr 2022 01:11 PM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/business-and-law/nab-to-fcc-time-to-wrap-up-ownership-rule-review

This story was originally published by our sister publication Broadcasting+Cable.

The FCC should conclude its long-overdue, congressionally mandated
quadrennial review of whether its media ownership regulations are necessary
in the public interest, National Association of Broadcasters CEO Curtis
LeGeyt told FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel earlier this month,
    according to an FCC filing.

A politically tied FCC is unlikely to approve reregulation of broadcasters
and so far there has been no movement on a Senate confirmation vote on Gigi Sohn, the Democratic nominee who would break that tie.

In a meeting with Rosenworcel, as well as fellow Democrat Commissioner
Geoffrey Starks, LeGeyt and other NAB executives said it was past time to
    wind up the 2018 review.

They said that some delay was understandable given that the Supreme Court
had heard an appeal of the FCCs broadcast reg rollback, but now that that decision was far back in the rearview mirror, the FCC needed to wrap it up.

NAB recognized that could be problematic without a full commission, so said
it was urging Rosenworcel to complete the rulemaking ASAP after a full commission is seated, but that if that does not happen in the near term, it needs to finish up anyway.

Back in June 2021, the FCC officially restored the deregulatory media
ownership order adopted by the Republican majority under former chairman
Ajit Pai, a decision reversed by an appeals court before that reversal was reversed by the Supreme Court. But the FCC had also sought comment to
update the public record on media ownership for the overdue quadrennial
    review.

That could give a Democratic-controlled FCC the opening to re-regulate broadcasters if the record suggests to them that is necessary.

In November 2017, a politically divided FCC voted to eliminate the newspaper-broadcast and the radio-TV cross-ownership rules; allow dual
station ownership in markets with fewer than eight independent voices after
the duopoly, creating an opportunity for ownership of two of the top four stations in a market on a case-by-case basis (the FCC did not call it a waiver); eliminate attribution of joint sales agreements as ownership; and create an incubator program.

Those changes had been blocked by the Third Circuit, which remanded the decision back to the FCC for a better justification of the decision. The Supreme Court ultimately reversed that decision, holding that the decision
was not arbitrary and capricious and that the FCCs conclusion that the
rules were no longer in the public interest was reasonable.

Of course that would not prevent a Rosenworcel-led FCC from re-regulating broadcast ownership when there is a Democratic majority on the commission.

Dishing Out Sonic Hugs With Omnia.11 v4.0

    Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:50 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/buyers-guide/dishing-out-sonic-hugs-with-omnia-11-v4-0

Radio World Buyer’s Guide articles are intended to help readers understand why their colleagues chose particular products to solve various technical situations. This month’s articles focus on products for audio processing.

“Omnia.11 just reaches out and gives the listeners a big hug when they tune in. It does.”

So says CJ Jackson, chief engineer for Salem Media Group’s WFSH(FM) 104.7
    The Fish in Atlanta.

“I’ve used, and sometimes modded, virtually every processing chain over my career — ranging from the famous ‘Black Box’ to gear from what seems to be
about a third of the alphabet when I think about it. For FM and HD, the
Telos Alliance Omnia.11 is my go-to for all formats.”
CJ Jackson, chief engineer for WFSH, in front of the Omnia.11

Jackson finds that many processors have one overall personality, and when
you want something different, you are out of luck.

“With an Omnia.11, especially when updated to v4.0, I can tame the always-hard-to-process CCM format, give a news-talk show that warm high-TSL
AM sound, or make a classic rocker jump out of the radio. If I need to
‘crank it up,’ well, Omnia.11 is a champion of taking it to 11, and it still sounds clean.”

He also finds it easy to dial in a station’s unique on-air personality.

[Read More Buyers Guide Reviews Here]

An added benefit is that Omnia.11 works well with the Voltair Monitor and Processor from Omnia’s sister brand 25-Seven, as it has the optimum patch point.

Omnia.11 simplifies other air-chain workflows too. “Taking AES 192 into my new Nautel? Done. Composite into another transmitter? Done. Audio input failover? Done. Lock my presets? Done.”

He recommends it for stations in any market, whether a regional
    flamethrower or a Class A.

Paul McLane is editor in chief of Radio World, which he joined in 1996, directing the editorial content of 32 annual print issues, almost 100
ebooks, daily newsletters, and webcasts and special projects. He has interviewed directors of engineering, FCC chairs, national radio
personalities and corporate executives about digital radio, connected cars, industry standards and other topics. Prior to RW he was an award-winning broadcast journalist and technology sales/marketing executive.

Ennals Takes the Reins at CRA

    Posted: 15 Apr 2022 08:33 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/global/ennals-takes-the-reins-at-cra

Ford Ennals has started in his role as the new CEO of Commercial Radio Australia, succeeding its dynamic longtime leader Joan Warner.
Ford Ennals, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia

“My Australian mum would have been proud,” he wrote in an introductory email.

“This is an exciting time for radio and the overall audio sphere. I have spent the past 10 years working with the wider UK radio industry — the government, media regulator, broadcasters, supply chain and the automotive industry — to transition listening to digital platforms. It has been
exciting to see the growth of digital radio in the UK with 65% of all radio listening now done via DAB and streaming, stimulating commercial radio
    growth and record ad revenues.”

Ennals described Australia as having “one of the most advanced and dynamic radio and audio markets in the world” and said it is “enjoying strong innovation and growth with digital radio, apps, podcasts and smart speakers
    all playing an increasing role.”

Warner announced her intention to leave last September. July of 2021 marked
her 20th anniversary in the CEO position.

[Visit Radio Worlds Global News Page]

CRA represents the interests of commercial radio broadcasters in the
country. Known as the Federation of Australian Radio Broadcasters when
Warner started, it changed its name to Commercial Radio Australia Limited
    in 2002.

CRA Chair Grant Blackley said last year that Warner had “worked tirelessly
to advance the strategic imperatives for a healthy and vibrant radio industry.”

Ford Ennals previously led Digital Radio UK since its founding in 2010.
Prior to that, he headed the British digital television switchover body
    Digital UK.

In March, Ennals announced his resignation from Digital Radio UK as part of its merger with Radioplayer.

At Digital Radio UK, Ennals worked with the BBC, Global, Bauer and Arqiva,
as well as with automotive and technical bodies, the British government,
and media regulator Ofcom to advance digital listening.

Blackley called Ennals “an entrepreneurial change agent and leader in
digital transformation, both of which will be valuable skills at CRA as the audio industry is well on its way to digital transformation.”

Audacy CRO Weighs in on the Relevance of Audio

    Posted: 14 Apr 2022 01:00 PM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/audacy-cro-weighs-in-on-the-relevance-of-audio

This week, Brian Benedik, CRO of Audacy, wrote a column detailing the power
of audio and its ability to transcend competitors by being immediate,
intimate, portable and trusted — not to mention a valuable asset for advertisers. These were some of his main points.
    Brian Benedik, CRO of Audacy

Having joined the company in December 2021, Benedik said one of the things
that drew him to the Audacy team was the investments the company is making
    in technology.

Once upon a time, advertisers thought radio’s only real strength was its ability to share a message efficiently to a huge portion of the public,
Benedik told Fast Company. While it’s true that Audio remains a great reach medium, the digital age has also made it very precise.

He said this precision is audios greatest differentiator — and in turn
makes audio platforms better and more efficient at reaching target consumer audiences, which, in turn, attracts advertisers.

In the digital age, as more media platforms arise, the conversation
surrounding the relevance of audio, and whether or not broadcast platforms
such as radio will survive, continues.

Benedik, however, is certain that audio entertainment is going nowhere. He calls audio the ultimate companion medium — additive to whatever else the consumer may be doing, whether its cooking a meal, grocery shopping or
    driving to work.

In fact, despite it being the oldest of all electronic media, AM/FM radio
still holds the top position in The Infinite Dial 2022s survey of in-car
    media.

    [Related: Radio Matters. Here’s Why.]

Benedik argues that the audio industry will continue to flourish as it is portable and easily accessible. Plus, a rise in listening to audio
platforms such as podcasting have only sweetened the deal.

He also notes that audio is the most trusted and relied upon media, a
statement corroborated by a recent study called “Exploring the Brand
Benefits of Trust and Companionship in Audio.” According to the study, 55%
of participants said they listen to commercials more often on radio and in podcasts than on any other medium.

Chris Yarusso, national audio practice lead for PMX, the investment arm of Publicis Media, said, “With the resiliency of radio and recent explosion of the podcasting space, audio influencers have emerged as a new avenue for advertisers to continue to connect with audiences in authentic ways.

It’s an intimate experience with voices, content, and brands that people
not only trust but build their day around, Benedik told Fast Company. That intimacy means users are more engaged with audio than any other medium.
None scores higher in trust. And it’s why I’m here [at Audacy].

    Radiodays Europe Expands Its Brief

    Posted: 14 Apr 2022 09:10 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/news-and-business/news-makers/radiodays-europe-expands-its-brief

The war in Ukraine, staff recruitment challenges, and developments in the
world of audio will be on the agenda when the 12th annual Radiodays Europe opens in Malmö, Sweden next month.

The conference has broadened its focus to include more types of audio work.
It now aims to be a “meeting point for the European radio, podcast and audio industries,” including private and public radio stations, podcasters of all sizes, and audio professionals from a variety of industries.

Rosemary Smith is comms manager for Radiodays Europe.

Radio World: How did the pandemic affect your ability to stage this event
    in the last two years?

Rosemary Smith: Radiodays Europe Lisbon 2020 was cancelled at the very
start of the pandemic. It was a turbulent time for all in the industry and
it became apparent that Radiodays Europe had to change quickly and continue
to provide content to the industry throughout the pandemic.

This is why we supported and joined with Benztown and P1 in launching the Coronavirus Radio Awards, brought the first Podcast Day Online event online and, as a bit of fun, held our Radiodays Europe Christmas Lunch with
inspiring messages from around the industry to all online in 2020.

The year 2021 started out as a world of online events, and we launched
Podcast Day 24, in partnership with the British Podcast Awards and the Australian Podcast Awards, three events, across three continents in 24
hours. It was a huge success, although a challenge to produce for our
audiences worldwide. Australia did manage an in-person event; however in
Europe and North America the quarantines were still very much in place.

Radiodays Europe Lisbon 2021 did go ahead in September of that year. With
COVID measures in place, masks and social distancing, a smaller event was
held in-person with an equal number of attendees online.

It was with a sigh of relief that the radio, audio and podcast industries gathered in Lisbon. Face to face is so important, maybe more so after this pandemic, which has been so hard on so many in our industry.

Radiodays Asia also went online in 2021 for the first time with speakers
from all over the world joining and making it a truly special event.

Radiodays Europe Malmö 2022 is continuing the hybrid approach for the many countries and companies who are unable to travel; however registration is
up on last year, and we are looking forward to welcoming a greater number
of exhibitors and sponsors. The speaker roster is also very impressive this year.
    Radiodays Europe session

RW: What is the theme or focus?

Smith: In the last year Radiodays Europe has widened its remit to include
all from the radio, audio and podcasting industries. Although we had
attendees and sponsors from all of these sectors we are now recognizing the diversification of our event. The theme for this year’s event is “Audio Today & Tomorrow,” to reflect the addition of audio into our fold. We are also part of helping all to look forward from today and to see where the opportunities and threat lie in the future.

RW: What do you feel are the most pressing business or technology issues
facing radio broadcasters in Europe right now?

Smith: There are three areas which have been of note in the planning for Radiodays Europe, the most obvious of which is the current war in Ukraine
and the threat to truth and freedom of the press.

For stations and companies, we have seen that staff and or talent retention with so many platforms now competing in an increasing issue.

Finally, a new focus this year has been diversity in the radio, audio and podcast sectors — can they do more?

RW: Can you give us a sample?

Smith: We have a session called “#Ukraine — The War on Truth.” In time of war and crisis, misinformation can easily spread like wildfire on social
media, and professional media is getting under pressure, independent
journalism being attacked and media outlets being closed down by
authorities, like recently in Russia. This session will explore how to strengthen independent journalism and how to check the authenticity of
    videos and content being spread.

The session “Recruit, Retrain, Retain” will explore how organizations from three countries approach recruitment of new talent, retention of key staff
and how to ensure that existing staff have the right skills for an ever-changing audio industry.

And the session “From Inclusion to Journalism — The Swedish Case” is aimed
to help organizations consider how to remain relevant and trustworthy as a public service organization today.

[For News on This and Other Shows See Our Show News Page]

RW: Is there a virtual component of the event?

Smith: Radiodays Europe remains a hybrid event to remain open to all our
    many worldwide friends and colleagues.

RW: For those attending in person, what rules will be in place as far as
COVID, including vaccination status and masking?

Smith: All COVID restrictions in Sweden have now been removed, no masks or vaccine passports are required. While travelling, however, attendees need
to ensure they are following all COVID restrictions on airlines and public transport plus checking the entry/exit rule are in place for their home countries. Radiodays Europe will continue to follow guidance on venue management and safety measures as set out by the Swedish government and continues to respect those wishing to wear or not wear masks.

RW: What else should we know?

Smith: It’s all new on Sunday at Radiodays Europe. This year Sunday is
almost a full day, kicking off with Radiodays Europe Women in the morning, which is a free in-person and online event. This is followed by three
Summits: Podcast Summit in partnership with Acast, Next Gen Youth Summit in partnership with THIS, and the Danske Audio Summit in partnership with
    Danish Audiodays.

At the end of the summits there is the chance to watch the European
premiere of the documentary “Worst to First: The True Story of Z100 New York,” sponsored by PURE Jingles, with post-premiere drinks at the RCS
Sunday Night Welcome Drinks at the venue MalmöMässan.

    Lawos Diamond Mixing Console Sparkles

    Posted: 14 Apr 2022 08:43 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/products/lawos-diamond-mixing-console-sparkles

Lawo calls diamond, which was introduced last fall and will be on display
at the NAB Show, “the crown jewel” of its line of mixing consoles for radio and TV applications.

The company says it blends form, function and advanced workflow
capabilities into a beautiful new package.

“Completely modular, diamond can be sized from two fader ‘personal’ consoles up to 60-fader master-control and production configurations, said Lawo. This allows a single studio to host several mixing surfaces that act
as a single console, giving producers, hosts and talent direct access to a personalized selection of audio sources and functions.

Nine module types allow diamond to be tailored to main studios, production facilities, news booths or remote studio operation.

Each button and rotary control can be programmed to fit the user’s
workflow. Function keys and rotary selectors with RGB backlights can be color-coded by function. Integration with popular playout systems coupled
with context-sensitive full-color displays provide operators with an information-rich mixing environment. Dual-layer operation effectively
doubles fader count, according to the company.

[For More News on the NAB Show See Our NAB Show News Page]

The console integrates touchscreen control into the mixing surface with optional Virtual Extension modules — 13.3-inch adjustable-angle HD color touchscreens that complement physical controls with context-sensitive
options such as: peak and loudness metering, access to DSP and routing functions, user and snapshot management and custom control screens for
playout systems, visual radio equipment, third-party studio gear and custom logic functions (via Lawo VisTool screen design software).

Its mixing/routing core is Power Core, a native AoIP device using the AES67
/ Ravenna networking standard. In addition to providing a lot of expandable
I/O for AES67, MADI, analog, AES3 and Dante audio sources and destinations, each Power Core can support four mixing consoles/studios.

The new model is based on the 2019-released SL-1200MK7 record player and features a golden anodized tonearm and an engraved serial number on the top panel. Included with each turntable is a slip mat with a colored Technics

The original SL-1200 has been a club staple since being adopted by DJs
after the record player’s initial release in 1972 and is one of those rare components that blurs the lines between hi-fi and musical instruments.

The design of the SL-1200M7L includes a high rigidity cabinet and damping insulator to minimize vibrations. It also includes a starting torque/brake speed adjustment function, pitch control, reverse play, and a stylus illuminator with a high-brightness, long-life LED.

The SL-1200M7L will be available for pre-order from selected retailers on

    Posted: 13 Apr 2022 02:55 PM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/products/picklejar-assists-mid-west-family-in-shoebox-campaign

Here’s a radio station promotions story with a twist.

PickleJar Holdings, which produces a live entertainment and artist payments app, said it will support the radio fundraising campaign Shoeboxes for
Soldiers 2022 being run by Mid-West Family Broadcasting station WRTB(FM) “95.3 The Bull” in Rockford, Ill.

The campaign helps create, collect and send care packages to armed forces around the world, in partnership with Operation Shoebox.

“From now through May 30, listeners will be able to donate directly to Shoeboxes for Soldiers using PickleJar Insider, the app’s free broadcast-focused feature. [Its] a seamless way for radio stations to
quickly mobilize and give back to those in need,” the company wrote.

“In addition, PickleJar will donate $5 for each of the first 500 donations funded through the PickleJar app or QR code for a total of $2,500.”

PickleJar calls itself “the world’s biggest tip jar.” It uses peer-to-peer
payment technology and performance management tools to facilitate financial transactions for musicians, content creators and artists.

The Insider feature helps air personalities connect with nonprofits and charities. Donors pay via Apple Pay, Google Pay, contactless credit, and
    debit cards through their smartphone.

PickleJar Members can also follow stations and radio personalities within
    the app.

“PickleJar Insider helps radio stations activate their listening audience
to give back with immediate results,” read the press release. “Insider can also be used to raise support and funds for individual or time-limited campaigns, such as natural disaster response, humanitarian or emergency
relief, radio-thons, seasonal charity drives, championing a mission or advocacy, significant local events and more.”

It said beneficiary organizations keep all money raised.
