    economic success of our industry.

If all we are are jukeboxes, well that information and content is available anywhere. But theres something very unique about a local broadcaster who understands their community and helps solve local problems.

RW: How does the commercial radio industry continue to remain relevant with
so many other media choices and outlets readily available (and expanding)?

Hulvey: I think the key to success has to do with attitude and it has to do with perception. The definition of radio has changed dramatically over
time. Back in the day, radio was a box that emitted sound and it was a
device, it was an appliance. Today, radio appears in many different ways.
Its a platform that distributes content, its digital, its social, its advertising and traditional broadcast. The evolution of what radio is has evolved and will continue to evolve.

To me, the flexibility and the way our industry has pivoted to respond to
the needs of our advertisers and our communities, our listeners and users
and readers — all of those things have changed. And to me, its exciting.
Were not just a single point-to-point appliance. Were interactive and
    engaging on so many fronts.

RW: In general, do you think the industry is embracing some of these new mediums — like podcasting or moving segments to Spotify — or is there still some hesitation?

Hulvey: Podcasting has been a part of what weve done for a very long time,
even if we didnt call it podcasting at the time. To go and re-listen and
enjoy a show or segment or interview that you didnt listen to live — now, thanks to technology we have the ability to repurpose that content. A lot
of radio broadcasters are presenting video coverage of local high school
sports on a Friday night.  Its still the radio station that is presenting
that information. Theyre just using different platforms.

So, yes, broadcasters are embracing those things. Thats become a part of
who we are as we redefine what radio is.

RW: Any projections for the future of the industry?

Hulvey: Radio is still alive and well. Has it changed? Yep, you bet. But of
all of the mediums, radio has done fairly well in adapting and evolving.
The one thing that I know is that its going to be focused on the community,
its going to be focused locally and its going to be focused on how we solve problems for our advertisers.

From a competition perspective in the digital space, there are some things
we do very well and some things we technically have to figure out. But I
think we understand that. Were still the greatest-reach medium of all time.
Its just incredible the power that radio broadcasters have.

Watch Now: Learn About Streaming Loudness Levels

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 07:00 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/resource-center/videos/watch-now-learn-about-streaming-loudness-levels

What are the best loudness levels to use when streaming audio or posting on-demand audio on the internet? The video below will help you answer that question.

The AES New York Section recently conducted a webinar in which members of
the AES Technical Committee for Broadcast and Online Delivery discuss their recently published recommendations on that topic. Moderated by David
Bialik, the session includes John Kean, Bob Katz and Bob Orban.

“Internet audio streaming and on-demand file playback have become major sources of media delivery, affecting the ways that audio is recorded,
mixed, post-produced and delivered,” the organization wrote in a summary.

“Excessive loudness compromises quality, inconsistent loudness annoys listeners.” The new guidelines are intended to help resolve these issues.

The 90-minute webinar was presented in conjunction with the Society of Broadcast Engineers. Watch it here.

    Triton Launches Ad Marker Rules

    Posted: 23 Mar 2022 04:30 AM PDT https://www.radioworld.com/tech-and-gear/products/triton-launches-ad-marker-rules

Triton Digital has launched an automated ad placement system that it says
gives publishers the ability to set rules that specify the minimum number
of ad markers and ads per marker for an audio clip, based on the clip
    duration.

Ad Marker Rules will be available to customers using the Omny Studio
Campaign Manager (OCM) or the Triton Advertising Platform (TAP).

“Oftentimes, digital audio publishers do not place enough mid-roll markers before publishing, which has a negative impact on ad revenue,” the company said.

“Triton Digital’s Ad Marker Rules system helps overcome this problem by empowering publishers to create and automate duration-based rules to ensure that the desired amount of ad markers are always placed in radio shows and podcast episodes before publishing. With this system, if a clip meets a
pre-set rule, the pre and post-roll ad markers will automatically be added.
In instances where ads need to be manually placed, such as mid-roll ad
markers, the Ad Marker Rules system will remind publishers to place the recommended mid-roll ad markers based on the length of the clip automatically.”

Managing Director Sharon Taylor said in the announcement that not placing
ample mid-roll markers ahead of publishing is a common frustration.

“Since ad markers are critical for determining ad revenue, the new Ad
Marker Rules system gives publishers the power to maximize their revenue by automating these ad marker functions, without disrupting existing
    workflows.”

Ad Marker Rules follows the “settings inheritance hierarchy” used by TAP, so users can apply the same settings to all programs within a network, or override the setting for a single program, directly in the platform.
