The popular SARL HAMNET 40 m Simulated Emergency Contest runs from 12:00 t
o 14:00 UTC (14:00 to 16:00 CAT) this afternoon Sunday 7 March 2021 and is
open to radio amateurs from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesoth
o, eSwatini, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Marion Island and SANAE Base. T
here are four classes of participation and the exchange depends on the Cla

UNLOCKING AMATEUR RADIO TECHNOLOGY

The SARL technology symposium will be held on 27 March 2021 from 10:00 to
14:00 CAT. Registration will open next week when details will be publishe
d on the SARL web and in next week's SARL News. Registration is fr
ee for SARL members and R50 for non-members. The symposium will be present
ed on the BlueJeans platform.

UPDATE ON AMATEUR LICENSE RENEWAL

The SARL interacted this week with a senior councillor of ICASA and expres
sed the League's concern about the complicated license renewal pro
cess, long delays, and in many instances unfamiliar terminology used i
n the process leading to applications being rejected. The SARL pointed out
that the promised detailed guidelines and videos have not been forthcomin
g. In 2019 when the first prototype system was being tested, ICASA under
took to arrange a workshop as part of the quarterly SARL/ICASA liaison mee ting. Neither has happened. The SARL, in a separate letter to the Chairp
erson and CEO, has appealed to ICASA to arrange a liaison meeting betwee
n ICASA and the SARL with the appropriate senior officials as required in
the MOU as soon as possible.

In this week's interaction with ICASA the SARL also requested that
the 1 April dateline for license renewals be delayed by three months or u
ntil a workable process has been effected. The Councillor confirmed that t
he issues raised by the SARL will be discussed at senior level during the
coming week and said that he believes that by mid-March ICASA will respon
d appropriately to the issues raised by the SARL on behalf of Radio Amateu
rs. The SARL recommends that radio amateurs pay their license as communica
ted before, but do not attempt to engage the new system until the necess
ary guidelines and videos explaining the process are made available.

Licensees can pay the license fee via EFT and keep the proof of payment to

During the weekend of 13 and 14 March, you can attend the QSO Today Virt
ual Expo and take part in the 84th RSGB Commonwealth Contest starting at 1
0:00 UTC on Saturday and ending 24 hours later. It is CW only on 80, 40
, 12, 15 and 10 metres. The exchange is an RST report and a serial num
ber starting at 1, Headquarters stations will also send â-˜HQâ

Then, the 46 VHF/UHF Group is hosting the first leg of the SARL VHF/UHF
Analogue contest from 05:00 to 11:00 UTC (07:00 to 13:00 CAT) on Saturday
and Sunday. Activity is on 6 and 2 meters and 70 centimetres and split in
to 2-hour sessions. 05:00 to 07:00 UTC it is 6 metre, from 07:00 to 09:0
0 UTC it is 2 metres and from 09:00 to 11:00 UTC it is 70 cm. The exchange
is an RS report and your 6-character Maidenhead grid locator. Your log sh

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are two sunspot regions with simple magnetic conf igurations visible. No solar flaring is expected. If you want to do your o
wn frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot number for the
week will be around three. The 15 to 30 m bands will especially during th

ONTSLUIT AMATEUR RADIO TEGNOLOGIE

Die SARL Tegnologiese Simposium word op 27 Maart 2021 van 10:00 tot 14:00
SAT gehou. Registrasie sal volgende week open wanneer besonderhede op die
SARL-web en in die SARL Nuus van volgende week gepubliseer sal word. Regi strasie is gratis vir SARL-lede en R50 vir nie-lede. Die simposium word op
die BlueJeans-platform aangebied.

OPDATERING OOR AMATEUR LISENSIE HERNUWING

Die SARL het vandeesweek met 'n senior raadslid van OKOSA in gesprek getre
e en die Liga se kommer uitgespreek oor die ingewikkelde proses van hernuw
ing van lisensies, lang vertragings en in baie gevalle onbekende termino
logie wat in die proses gebruik is, wat daartoe gelei het dat aansoeke v
an die hand gewys is. Die SARL het daarop gewys dat die beloofde gedetaill eerde riglyne en video's nie beskikbaar is nie. In 2019, toe die eerste
prototipe-stelsel getoets is, het OKOSA onderneem om 'n werkswinkel te
reël as deel van die kwartaallikse SARL/OKOSA-skakelvergadering. Nie
een het gebeur nie. Die SARL het in 'n aparte brief aan die voorsitter en
uitvoerende hoof 'n beroep op OKOSA gedoen om so gou moontlik 'n skakelve rgadering tussen OKOSA en die SARL met die toepaslike senior amptenare te
reël, soos vereis in die MOU.

In die interaksie vandeesweek met OKOSA het die SARL ook gevra dat die spe rdatum van 1 April vir die hernuwing van lisensies met drie maande vertraa
g word of totdat 'n werkbare proses uitgevoer is. Die raadslid het bevesti
g dat die aangeleenthede wat deur die SARL geopper word gedurende die kome
nde week op senior vlak bespreek sal word en het gesê dat hy van meni
ng is dat OKOSA teen middel Maart gepas sal reageer op die kwessies wat di
e SARL namens Radio Amateurs geopper het. Die SARL beveel aan dat radio am ateurs hul lisensie betaal soos voorheen gekommunikeer, maar nie probeer
om die nuwe stelsel te betrek voordat die nodige riglyne en video's wat d
ie proses verduidelik, beskikbaar is nie.

Lisensiehouers kan die lisensiegeld via EFT betaal en die betalingsbewys b ewaar wat gebruik moet word by die oorskakeling na die nuwe stelsel. Bankb esonderhede is soos volg: Nedbank rekeningnommer: 14 62 00 29 27, takkod
e: 146245 - Korporatiewe kliëntedienste - Pretoria en tik jou lisensi
enommer en roepsein in die verwysingsveld. Die nuwe fooie is op www.sarl.o rg.za te vinde.

MOENIE die OKOSA-lisensiegeld in die SARL-bankrekening betaal nie, alle
geld wat verkeerdelik in die SARL rekening betaal is, word terugbetaal
minus die bankkoste verbonde aan hierdie transaksies. Soos voorheen verso
ek, stuur nie die SARL-sekretaris of president per e-pos nie, aangesie
n hulle jou nie in hierdie stadium kan help nie.

, 40, 12, 15 en 10 meter. Die uitruiling is 'n RST-verslag en 'n ree
ksnommer vanaf 1, Hoofkwartier stasies sal ook 'HQ' stuur wat aangemeld

gaan wees. Tans is daar twee sonvlekgroepe met eenvoudige magnetiese same stellings sigbaar. Daar word nie enige sonfakkels voorspel nie. Diegene wa
t hulle eie frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe
sonvlektelling van drie vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan veral sm iddae goeie DX openinge op die 15 tot 30 m bande verwag. Besoek gerus die
