WBAL/WIYY President/GM Cary Pahigian To Step Down; WBAL-TV's Dan Joerres To
    Add Duties

    Posted: 07 Mar 2022 08:35 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/220929/wbal-wiyy-president-gm-cary-pahigian-to-step-down-wbal-tvs-dan-joerres-to-add-duties/

Cary Pahigian will step down as President/General Manager of Hearst
    News/Talk 1090 WBAL/101.5 W268BA and 98 Rock 97.9 WIYY Baltimore on March
31 to explore new professional opportunities.

Pahigian has led WBAL/WIYY since 2014 after previously spending fifteen
years as General Manager of Saga Communications Portland ME stations. He
has also served as Operations Manager of WGAN Portland and WIP
Philadelphia, Station Manager of WBZ Boston, VP/Operations for Sconnix Broadcasting, and VP of Boch Broadcasting.

Pahigians duties will be absorbed by WBAL-TV President/GM Dan Joerres.
Joerres has led the television station since 2011 after previously holding sales leadership roles at WISN-TV Milwaukee and WXII Winston Salem NC. He
began his career in radio working in promotions for Saga Milwaukee, where
his father was an executive and then in sales for Capstar Madison WI.

Cary L. Pahigian, one of radio’s most familiar and accomplished executives, has decided to step away, effective March 31, from the position he has held since 2014 as president and general manager of Hearst Television’s legacy Baltimore radio stations to explore several new professional opportunities.

Pahigian’s duties will be added to those held by Dan Joerres, a 24-year Hearst Television veteran who since 2011 has served as president and
general manager of WBAL-TV and, since 2014, as Pahigian’s close partner and collaborator on numerous joint Radio-TV initiatives, including Baltimore
Ravens football. Joerres will oversee all of Hearst’s Baltimore operations – WBAL-TV, WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 and WIYY-FM “98 ROCK” and their associated digital properties.

Among many other joint accomplishments, Joerres and Pahigian have secured
key broadcast rights to Baltimore’s major professional sports teams – including most recently the radio broadcast rights for the Baltimore
Orioles. WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 and 98 ROCK are now the official
radio home of the Orioles, while WBAL-TV, WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 and
98 ROCK are the official broadcast partners to the Ravens.

“When Cary joined us eight years ago, he brought a wealth of experience at many of the nation’s most honored radio stations,” said Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb. “His passionate advocacy for local broadcasting and his strong appreciation for broadcasters’ important community service role were hallmarks of his spectacular success in managing WBAL Radio and
98 ROCK to even greater heights. We wish him great success in his
    well-deserved next chapter.”

“I joined WBAL and 98 ROCK because of the exceptional leadership team and extraordinary culture at Hearst Television,” Pahigian said. “And my longtime teammate and friend Dan Joerres epitomizes that level of
managerial acumen. I know he will lead the outstanding teams throughout WBAL-TV, WBAL NewsRadio and 98 ROCK to even greater achievements. While I
plan more adventures for my ongoing career, I leave Hearst with my
gratitude for their support and providing me the opportunity of a lifetime.”

In addition to WBAL NewsRadio and 98 ROCK being home to Baltimore Ravens Football and Baltimore Orioles, WBAL AM/FM is the flagship station for Navy Football. WBAL NewsRadio is Baltimore’s longtime news/talk leader and
among the nation’s most honored radio stations, earning dozens of regional and several national Edward R. Murrow Awards. The WBAL Radio Kids Campaign
has earned the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Education
Foundation “Service to Children” Award, and both WBAL NewsRadio and 98 ROCK are finalists for the NAB’s 2022 Crystal Radio Awards for outstanding community service. 98 ROCK’s “Justin, Scott Spiegel” are the market’s dominant morning show; they also host a highly rated WBAL-TV show. WBAL NewsRadio’s popular “C4 Bryan Nehman” morning show is a must-listen for breaking news and analysis in Maryland.

During Pahigian’s tenure, WBAL Radio burnished its journalistic
reputation. Among many other honors, it captured NAB’s 2016 Marconi Award for Large Market Station of the Year, and in 2021 it earned four
first-place awards in Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association competition, recognizing journalism from stations in Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C. In 2020, Pahigian was recognized nationwide as Radio
Ink’s General Manager of the Year.

Pahigian joined Hearst Television from Saga Communications, where he was president and general manager of a nine-station radio group in Portland,
Maine. His broadcast leadership experience includes corporate vice president/operations at Sconnix Broadcasting, station manager at
WBZ/Boston, and operations manager at WIP/Philadelphia. He has been active within numerous non-profit organizations and community initiatives, as well
as industry organizations including the NAB and the Radio Advertising
Bureau (RAB), and has served on the boards of regional organizations
including the Maryland, DC, Delaware Broadcasters Association.

While Joerres has spent his career in television, he essentially grew up in radio; his father was an executive with Saga. Joerres moved to WBAL-TV as president and general manager in January 2011 from Hearst-owned WXII-TV in Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he had served as general
sales manager. He currently serves on various Baltimore area boards,
including The Loyola Blakefield Board of Trustees, the Shock Trauma
Hospital Board of Visitors and The Greater Baltimore Committee, as well as
the boards of the Stella Maris elder care facility, the Center Club of Baltimore and the Maryland, DC, Delaware State Broadcasters Association.

Lightner Communications has launched the Jack-FM Variety Hits brand on 1260 WPHB Phillipsburg/104.3 W282CV State College PA.

WPHB is now simulcasting Lightners 1400 WYUP Loretto/107.1 W296ED Altoona
as 107.1 104.3 Jack-FM. WYUP has featured the Jack-FM brand since November 2018. Owner Matt Lightner tells us that WPHB will break away for local
sports and community events and may eventually have separate commercials
and localized content for each market.

In State College, the new format positions the station between Forever
Medias trio of Hot AC Majic 93.7 WMAJ, Classic Rock 99.5 The Bus WBUS, and Classic Hits Happy 103.1 WAPY as well as Seven Mountains Media Hot AC 95.3
    3WZ WZWW.

Update 3/2: Lightner Communications has completed its upgrade of 104.1
W281CB Phillipsburg PA to 104.3 in State College as it prepares to launch a
    new format.

Now operating as 104.3 W282CV State College with 250w/336.6m, the signal
gives the translator near full-market coverage continuing to be fed by 1260 WPHB Phillipsburg. Up next will be a new format, which is now slated to
    debut on Monday, March 7.

WPHB/W282CV are now stunting with a loop teasing multiple formats that will
be unlike any other in the history of Happy Valley. Many of the fake
formats being teased a riffs on the brands of competitors such as Country
The Toad to compete with Forever Medias Big Froggy 101 WFGE-FM, Classic
Hits Unhappy 104 to compete with Forevers Happy 103.1 WAPI, and Rock Slow
Rock 104 to compete with Schlesinger Communications 105.9 Qwik Rock WQCK.
Other fake brands in the loop include Sports Giger 24/7, Oldies Chill 104,
Hip Hop Red Hot 104, and Polkamania 104.

Original Report 2/28: Lightner Communications is preparing to launch a new brand in State College PA.

1260 WPHB/104.1 W281CB Phillipsburg PA are currently running a loop
redirecting listeners to sister Classic Hits Classic Favorites 1340
WTRN/100.7 W264BZ Tyrone and 96.9 W245CZ Altoona. The loop also promotes
the move of the 104.1 translator to 104.3 State College on Wednesday, March
2 at which time WPHB will debut a new format.

Lightner purchased WPHB/W281CB last year from Twilight Broadcasting for $77,500. WPHB had been simulcasting WTRN since the closing of the deal last fall.
