FCC Proposes $32K Fine Against Cumulus For EEO Violations

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 01:32 PM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/220522/fcc-proposes-32k-fine-against-cumulus-for-eeo-violations/

The FCC has proposed a $32,000 fine against Cumulus Media for EEO
Violations at its since sold Albany GA cluster.

The FCC states that Cumulus failed to upload its 2018 annual EEO public
file report in their online public files or station websites and analyze
its EEO program. In a response to the FCCs letter of inquiry, Cumulus
confirmed it has not uploaded the report until September 2011, nine months after its December 3, 2018 deadline to do explaining that it was due to
routine administrative change and the loss of a former employee. Cumulus Albany also failed to analyze its EEO program to ensure that it is
effective in achieving broad outreach to potential applicants, and to
address any problems found as a result of such analysis. Cumulus claimed
that following the exit of its Assistant Business Manager in December 2018,
the Business Manager “simply overlooked this requirement and, as a result, the 2018 EEO report was not uploaded in a timely fashion and did not
realize until September 2019 that the reports had not been uploaded.

Cumulus sold the Albany cluster to First Media Services in April 2020 for $450,000.

Radio Milwaukee To Launch HYPHEN On June 19

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 10:57 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/220513/radio-milwaukee-to-launch-hyphen-on-june-19/

Radio Milwaukee AAA 88.9 Radio Milwaukee WYMS Milwaukee has announced its launch plans for its new Urban Alternative brand.

Newly minted as HYFIN, the brand will debut on June 19th. It will be
available on WYMS primary signal from 9pm-3am daily and 24/7 on WYMS-HD2.
Radio Milwaukee received a $450,000 grant from the Corporation For Public Broadcasting last fall towards the development of the brand.

    – Radio Milwaukee’s (WYMS-88.9FM) new Urban Alternative channel will be called HYFIN, a name that signals the full spectrum of Black music that
will be played, the station announced Friday.

“A hyphen is a connector that bridges the gap between words or parts of words, bringing them together,” HYFIN Program Director Tarik Moody said. “That’s how HYFIN will function – as a bond between multiple styles of Black music, connecting the culture.”

“The name also represents the many identities within our community. Like
the music we will play, our community cannot fit neatly into a single box.
We are artists-mothers-dancers and friends-foodies-gamers. Rather than
trying to find a name that encapsulates all of our hopes for this channel,
we embraced an identity that emphasizes the multitude of the Black experience.”

HYFIN will offer an eclectic radio experience, celebrating the full
spectrum of Black music and the power of public radio. It will have an
on-air presence and use a multi-platform digital approach online. Radio Milwaukee’s current programming on 88.9FM will also continue on-air and on its digital platforms.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is providing a $450,000 grant to
Radio Milwaukee to help create the new channel. HYFIN is slated to launch
on June 19, which is Juneteenth Day, a holiday commemorating the
emancipation of slaves in the U.S.

Radio Milwaukee partnered with creative director DeChazier Pykel on the
name and brand identity for the channel. A Milwaukeean with his own multi-hyphenated background, DeChazier has 18 years of experience helping
to build more socially conscious and culturally relevant brands.

In building the brand identity for HYFIN, Radio Milwaukee was mindful of
the ways the mark can be creatively adapted by artists in the future. Additional colors and textures will be added to the brand as HYFIN prepares
    for launch.

HYFIN is intentionally written in all capital letters to emphasize that “FIN” is also an acronym for “Future is Now.”

“As Radio Milwaukee celebrates its 15th birthday, we are incredibly
thankful for the supportive community that has given us the opportunity to launch another channel of music for Milwaukee and listeners anywhere,”
Radio Milwaukee Interim Executive Director Danae Davis said. “And we are unapologetic in our desire for HYFIN to be a channel that amplifies and celebrates all that’s good in Milwaukee’s Black community.”

Community members interested in staying up-to-date on HYFIN news and announcements are encouraged to join the HYFIN FAM, an early-adopter brand ambassador program. The first 100 people to join at hyfin.org will receive
    a complimentary HYFIN t-shirt.

Throughout 2022, Radio Milwaukee is celebrating its 15th year on-air,
online and in the community. Radio Milwaukee launched in 2007 and is
operated by a non-profit organization that was formed to use the frequency
as a community asset. The organization operates WYMS through an operating agreement with Milwaukee Public Schools, which owns the frequency.

United. “Teaming up with iHeartMedia Washington D.C. is a perfect
complement to our live television broadcasts in English and Spanish on NBC Sports Washington and TeleXitos and our www.dcunited.comstream at no cost
for fans in the local market. Our full service of offerings meets fans
wherever they are, whether that be at home or on the go.”

“We are thrilled to bring D.C. United soccer to fans locally on 104.7
WONK-FM and everywhere on the iHeartRadio app this season,” said Aaron Hyland, Region President for iHeartMedia Washington D.C. “We are looking forward to delivering the live action and excitement of D.C. United to fans
in the DMV and beyond utilizing iHeartMedias unmatched reach in Broadcast, Podcast and Streaming Audio.”

Notably, Spanish-language simulcast will not be available for the club’s first match of the MLS season. Additional information on when that will
become available will be announced in the near future.

The Black-and-Red open their 2022 MLS Regular Season on Saturday, February
26 at 6:00 p.m. ET at Audi Field against Charlotte FC.

Ideastream Sets Cleveland Public Radio Frequency Change Date

    Posted: 25 Feb 2022 05:00 AM PST https://radioinsight.com/headlines/220460/ideastream-sets-cleveland-public-radio-frequency-change-date/

Ideastream Public Media has set the date for the next phase of its
integration of Public News/Talk 89.7 WKSU Kent/Akron OH into its network.

Ideastream began operating WKSU last October in addition to their own
Public News/Talk 90.3 WCPN Cleveland, Classical 104.9 WCLV Lorain and
    WVIZ-TV.

The second phase will take effect on Monday, March 28 when WKSU and its
network of simulcasters 89.1 WKSV Thompson, 89.3 WKRW Wooster, 90.7 WNRK Norwalk, 91.5 WKRJ New Philadelphia, 94.7 W234CX Mansfield, and 95.7 W239AZ Ashland OH become the only Public News/Talk outlet. The move will also
include a frequency swap as WCPN moves to the 104.9 Class A signal and
joins WKSUs network, while WCLV moves to the Class B 90.3 signal. The move
will give Cleveland a full-market Classical signal for the first time since
the 2001 seven signal format shuffle moved the station from 95.5 to 104.9

On March 28, WKSU will become the primary NPR news and information station
for Northeast Ohio. Last fall, WKSU and Ideastream Public Media announced
plans to join forces to expand coverage for the region. Those plans will
take effect at the end of March and will mean a change for listeners who currently get their NPR programming from WCPN in Cleveland.  WCLV, Cleveland’s home for classical music, also will be affected and will be moving to a new location on the dial.

HOW TO FIND IDEASTREAM PUBLIC MEDIA NEWS, INFORMATION & NPR SERVICE

As of March 28, those who currently listen to WCPN 90.3 FM will be able to
find their favorite news, reporters, programs and NPR coverage at WKSU 89.7
FM, as well as on 104.9 FM and the network of stations that carry WKSU including 89.1 Thompson, 89.3 Wooster, 90.7 Norwalk, 91.5 New Philadelphia, 94.7 Mansfield and 95.7 Ashland.

HOW TO FIND IDEASTREAM PUBLIC MEDIA CLASSICAL SERVICE

WCLV, Ideastream Public Media’s classical service, will move from 104.9 FM
to 90.3 FM beginning March 28. This change will extend classical music to approximately 1 million additional listeners.

    OTHER WAYS TO LISTEN

In addition to tuning in at 89.7 FM or 104.9 FM for news & information or
90.3 FM for classical music, listeners can:

Tell Alexa, Siri or their preferred smart speaker to “Play WKSU” or “Play WCLV”
Go to ideastream.org to stream from their computer or mobile phone
    Download the WKSU mobile app

COMMUNITY UPDATE: SERVING NORTHEAST OHIOANS WITH MORE NEWS COVERAGE

Ideastream Public Media and WKSU joined forces in October 2021, building
upon decades of award-winning journalism from two of the region’s leaders
in news and information, to create one of Northeast Ohio’s largest news organizations. This partnership creates an expanded and sustainable
regional news service that delivers local, statewide and national news,
using a combination of broadcast, digital and on-demand platforms to
increase the audience for Ideastream Public Media’s news and information programming from 2.4 to 3.6 million people in 22 counties throughout
    Northeast Ohio.

Since announcing the agreement, Ideastream Public Media has brought
together the staffs of WCPN and WKSU, working together to develop
programming, technological and communications plans. The unified
organization, which secured support and a vote of confidence from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, has also conducted a variety of
community conversations, as well as a quantitative survey of listeners to
get their input on how Ideastream Public Media can provide more expansive
    news coverage.

    As a result:

Expanded News Service: Ideastream Public Media will expand the number of weekday and weekend newscasts on WKSU and add a mid-day news host on
weekdays, providing local news service from 5am – 6pm on weekdays.
Service to Cleveland, Akron and Canton: Unifying the Ideastream Public
Media and WKSU news teams will allow for the establishment of a regional newsroom, which will not only add regional context and relevance to news coverage, but also establish an Akron/Canton news hub.
