GET READY FOR THE ANNUAL PERSEID METEOR SHOWER!

The average person looks for messages written in the stars, but when you
are an amateur with next-level radio skills, you bounce radio signals o
ff meteors to get your message from point A to B. Sounds completely zany
, but it is a very real amateur radio skill and one that novices and men
tors (Elmers) can both enjoy from 11 to 13 August during the 14th annual M MMonVHF/DUBUS 144 MHz Meteor Scatter Sprint Contest. The contest will take
place around the maximum of the Perseid meteor shower (that began on 14 J
uly) that is predicted to occur between the hours of 19:00 and 22:00 UTC o
n 12 August - and as expected, it is going to be a spectacular show.

While most meteor showers produce only a smattering of shooting stars that
are visible to the human eye, the Perseid shower delivers an outstandin
g performance with 60 - 150 meteors burning up the night sky in most years
. The meteor display is fittingly named after the constellation Perseus,
from which the meteors appear to radiate. The shower occurs annually when
the Earth passes through the trail of cosmic debris left by 109P/Swift-Tu
ttle - a comet that will not reappear to the inner solar system until 2125
. Viewing this year will be ideal with a dim waxing crescent moon that is
expected to set early to pave the way for meteor flashes and larger, br
ighter meteor explosions (called fireballs) that linger a little longer in
    the sky.

Amazing in and of itself, a meteor shower of this magnitude could only b
e made better by throwing in a little amateur radio fun. So how do you bou
nce signals off craggy solar system rocks? When meteors from outer space e
nter the Earth's atmosphere, a temporary ionized trail of debris is left
across the sky. Radio signals can bounce off these small ionized trails i
n much the same way that radio signals bounce off the larger ionosphere ar
ound Earth. This is called meteor scatter propagation. Amateurs use it to
signal between different amateur radio stations or to listen and record r
adio pings from passing meteors. Take some time to look at the stars this
August and learn a new aspect of amateur radio that is sure to get just a
s many "oohs" and "aahs" as the shooting stars you'll see flitting across
the night sky in all their flaming glory.

You are listening to a news bulletin of the South African Radio League.

THE USE OF SINGLE SIDEBAND (SSB) ON THE 30 METRE BAND

When the 30 metre band (10 100 to 101 50 kHz) was allocated to the Amateur
Radio Service on a secondary basis at WARC 1979, the IARU resolved that
no phone modes be allowed on that band with the exception that SSB may on
ly be used during emergencies involving the immediate safety of life and p roperty and only by stations actually in the handling of emergency traffic
. Thus, only Continuous Wave (CW) and digital modes are allowed for norm
    al use.

At the IARU Region 1 General Conference in Tel Aviv in 1996, the SARL Te
am managed to have the following footnote added to the IARU HF bandplan:

The band segment 10 120 kHz to 10 140 kHz may be used for SSB transmission
s in the area of Africa south of the equator during local daylight hours.
News bulletins on any mode should not be transmitted on the 10 MHz band.

According to IARU convention, Upper Sideband (USB) is used on band above
10 MHz (as well as 60 m or 5 MHz) - thus USB is used on 30 meters.

    CONTEST NEWS

The second leg of the SARL Youth Sprint is a fun activity to celebrate Int ernational Youth Day (12 August each year) and for amateurs to work as man
y young radio amateurs as possible. Youngsters work everybody and those ab
ove 26 years of age ONLY work Youngsters! The CW and phone Sprint runs fro
    m 12:00 to 13:00 UTC (14:00 to 15:00 CAT) on Saturday 14 August 2021. The
exchange is a RS(T) report and the operator's age. Logs in ADIF or Cabril
lo with a summary sheet or MS Excel spreadsheet must be submitted by 23:59
CAT on Thursday 19 August 2021 by e-mail to zs3vdk@webmail.co.za (mailto: zs3vdk@webmail.co.za) . The rules can be found on page 69 of the 2021 Blue
    Book.

The aim of the HF Digital Contest is for participants to contact as many r
adio amateurs in Southern Africa as possible on 20, 40 and 80 metres. Th
e HF Digital contest runs from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC (16:00 to 19:00 CAT) on
Sunday 15 August 2021. The exchange is an RSQ report and a consecutive se
rial number starting at 001. Get all the rules on page 86 of the 2021 Blue
    Book.

Sixteen logs and one check log were received for the 2021 All Africa DX Co ntest. Each log file had to be scored by hand as no suitable software is a vailable to do the scoring. Although the rules clearly state that CW, RT
TY and SSB are the modes to use, one log was received with ft8 contacts!

So, hoe weerkaat
hierdie klein, geïoniseerde spore weerkaats op dieselfde manier as
rd meteoor strooi voortplanting genoem.

    .

MHz (sowel as 60 m of 5 MHz). Gevolglik word HSB op 30-meter gebruik.
