THE SARL WINTER QRP CONTEST NEXT SATURDAY

The West Rand ARC would like to remind you that the Winter leg of the SARL
QRP contest will take place from 12:00 to 13:30 UTC on Saturday 16 July.
The exchange is RS or RST report and your six-character grid square. Extr
a points are awarded for field stations and the use of homebrew equipment.
Please note that if you are claiming extra points for either a field stat
ion or homebrew rig (or both) it is imperative that you submit photos of y
our station in action with your log. Remember, your photo/s may even end
up on the cover of HF Happenings or Radio ZS. Turn to page 70 of the 2022
SARL Contest Manual for more information.

THE ZS2 QSO PARTY NEXT SUNDAY

The ZS2 QSO Party is a fun activity to promote contacts between radio amat
eurs in the Eastern Cape and radio amateurs in Southern African countries.
The aim for stations outside ZS2 is to work as many ZS2 stations as possi
ble! It is on the air from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC on Sunday 17 July 2022. The
exchange is RS(T) and provincial or country abbreviation. The QSO Party i
s a phone and CW contest on the 40-metre band. Submit your log by 21:59 UT
    a) . Get the rules on page 42 of the 2022 Contest Manual.

ILLW ON TRACK FOR THE 25TH YEAR

Kevin, VK2CE and Ted, W8TTS report that 200 entries have just clicked
over for the 25th anniversary of this popular fun event held every year o
n the third weekend in August. Despite Covid, 365 entrants registered la
st year down around 100 from the usual number. Germany, Australia, the
USA and the UK have the most entries, but it is good to see entries fro
m smaller countries such as Barbados, Cyprus, Isle of Man, Malta,
    Trinidad & Tobago.

Entrants are reminded that the objective of the weekend is to have fun and
at the same time highlight the plight of lighthouses that suffer from lac
k of care and maintenance. Showing the public all about amateur radio is a
lso a side benefit. Amassing heaps of contacts as in a contest is certainl
    y discouraged.

The first year the event was held was 1998 and there is a list of particip
ants on the web site. Some of those stations have been in the event every
year or close to it. Congratulations go to the two founders Mike, GM4SU
C and John, GM400U for creating this event. Both were members of the Ayr
Amateur Radio Group at that time, I am sure they had no idea what would
become of their creation. The history of the event is also on the web sit
    e. Come and join the fun and introduce yourself to lighthouses.

To date, ten South African lighthouses have been registered with ZS3VDK
and ZS6WR members travelling down to the coast to activate three lighthou
    ses.

A NEW DATE FOR AMSAT SA SPACE SYMPOSIUM

AMSAT SA has changed the date of its annual Space Symposium from Saturday
23 July to Saturday 10 September and the format to a hybrid symposium. Th
e in-person event will be held at the Premier Hotel Midrand with a virtual
live screening on the BlueJeans platform. AMSAT SA said that the hybrid e
vent will present the best of two worlds still making the symposium partic ipation available to people who cannot travel to Midrand. The call for pap
ers has been extended to 31 July 2022. Send a short synopsis to admin@amsa tsa.org.za (mailto:admin@amsatsa.org.za) for consideration by the symposiu
    m organisers.

The theme of the symposium is "Space, the next frontier for expansion of
amateur radio." The symposium programme will cover topics at the entry le
vel of how to set up an inexpensive satellite station, how to get the mo
st out of a hand-held transceiver to explore satellite communication and a
more advanced level to doing space research with your own space weather s tation and how to get involved in building satellites. The registration wi
ll open on 15 July 2022.

    PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low to moderate levels. There are currently six sunspot regions vis
ible and there is a moderate probability for C-class, and a very low pro bability for M-class flaring. If you want to do your own frequency predict ions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be around
    74. The 15 to 30 m bands will provide some good DX fun. Please visit the

akte soos in 'n kompetisie word beslis ontmoedig.
