Ideastream To Begin Operating WKSU; Swap Frequencies Of WCPN & WCLV
Cleveland
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 11:30 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/212656/kent-state-university-to-vote-on-wksu-operating-agreement-with-ideastream/
Kent State University has approved Ideastream Public Medias public service operating agreement to take over operations of Public News/Talk 89.7 WKSU Kent/Akron OH starting October 1. Ideastream, the operator of Public
News/Talk 90.3 WCPN Cleveland, Classical 104.9 WCLV Lorain and PBS
affiliate WVIZ Cleveland, will offer positions to all of WKSUs current
staffers bringing their total organization to around 150 employees.
Between January 1 and April 1, 2022, Ideastream will realign the stations
as WKSU will become the remaining Public News/Talk service. Classical 104.9 WCLV Lorain will move to 90.3 replacing WCPN, with 104.9 gaining those call letters and joining WKSUs existing network of simulcasters 89.1 WKSV
Thompson, 89.3 WKRW Wooster, 90.7 WNRK Norwalk, 91.5 WKRJ New Philadelphia, 94.7 W234CX Mansfield, and 95.7 W239AZ Ashland OH.
Ideastream Public Media and WKSU public radio plan to enter into a public service operating agreement to create one of Northeast Ohio’s largest news organizations, building on decades of award-winning journalism from two of
the region’s leaders in news and information. Today, Kent State University’s board of trustees granted the university permission to pursue
an agreement for the management and operations of the WKSU stations. The Ideastream Public Media board has also voted to move forward with the
proposal for the public service operating agreement, which is expected to
go into effect October 1, 2021. On that date, Ideastream Public Media will begin operating WKSU. Kent State University will retain FCC licensing for
the WKSU stations.
This partnership will create an expanded and sustainable regional news
service that delivers local, national and statewide news, and excels on all broadcast, digital and on-demand platforms. Under the new operating
agreement, the population served by Ideastream Public Media’s news and information programming will increase from 2.4 million to 3.6 million and
serve 22 counties throughout Northeast Ohio.
In 2022, WKSU will become the sole NPR news and information station in Northeast Ohio and Ideastream Public Media will commit its 104.9 FM signal (currently WCLV) as a repeater station that extends the WKSU coverage. As
part of these plans, Ideastream Public Media’s classical service (WCLV)
will move to 90.3 FM, making classical music available to a significantly larger listening area.
All members of WKSU’s staff are being offered positions at Ideastream
Public Media’s expanded operation. The combined organization will employ approximately 150 employees, including more than 40 staff members in a new unified newsroom.
“We are pleased to be bringing two stellar media organizations together for the expansion of public news and information in Northeast Ohio,” said Todd Diacon, President of Kent State University. “WKSU carries a long legacy of award-winning news coverage and, together with Ideastream, we can become
the premier news and information source in the region. Most importantly,
our collaboration will result in even more learning and talent development opportunities for our students.”
“We are excited to be bringing together a group of talented, experienced professionals whose mission every day is to provide accurate, creative and localized reporting to the communities in which they live and serve,” said Kevin Martin, Ideastream Public Media President and CEO. “Simply put, our goal is to provide more programming, expand journalism for the entire
region, and build on our established business models to become even more sustainable.”
Martin noted that with this operating agreement, the combined organizations will be able to expand on-air news coverage as well as digital and
on-demand services. It will also pave the way for capital improvements to enhance service delivery and reach a broader audience, including currently underserved audiences across Northeast Ohio. The agreement will also build
on the nationally recognized journalism program offered by Kent State University, using resources to focus especially on developing more
diversified talent for the journalism profession.
Joining forces to create stronger public radio organizations is a concept
that has been in practice for some time. Similar partnerships have been
created between public news outlets in California, Colorado, Illinois,
Iowa, Minnesota and Washington.
The decision to pursue this agreement was reinforced by an analysis the two organizations conducted earlier this year with support from the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting. That analysis found Ideastream Public Media and
WKSU could realize a number of efficiencies by working together, resulting
in strong public service reporting in Northeast Ohio and other benefits to listeners throughout the region.
Under the agreement, a phased approach to transition will occur. Both WKSU
and WCPN will continue to operate as separate NPR news and information
stations for the time being, while staffs come together to develop plans
for combining newsroom resources and operations to grow. The organizations
will also seek input from the community to assess needs. Opportunities for community engagement will be shared as they become available.
Between January 1 and April 1, 2022, the following changes are expected to
take place:
WKSU will become the region’s NPR news and information station, with
repeater stations in Ashland, Mansfield, New Philadelphia, Norwalk,
Thompson and Wooster continuing to serve their local markets.
Ideastream Public Media will reformat 104.9 FM to serve an additional
repeater station for WKSU programming, bolstering coverage in the Cleveland area. The call letters associated with 104.9 FM will change from WCLV to
WCPN.
Those who have relied on WKSU and WCPN for in-depth news coverage will
continue to have access to the full array of programming through WKSU at
89.7 FM and its six repeater stations, along with 104.9 FM. They will
continue to hear “Morning Edition,” “All Things Considered,” “Here and
Now,” “Marketplace,” “Fresh Air,” the “Akron Roundtable,” the “Sound of
Ideas,” “OH Really” and the “City Club Forum,” as well as programming such
as “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me” and “Folk Alley.”
Those who love the classical programming provided by WCLV at 104.9 FM will
have access to that programming at the new WCLV at 90.3 FM. There, they can continue to enjoy locally hosted performances by local artists and
ensembles, including The Cleveland Orchestra, Apollo’s Fire and Lés
Delices, along with student and faculty ensembles from the Cleveland
Institute of Music, Oberlin Conservatory, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and Cleveland State University. Reflecting the intent to serve its new expanded coverage area, 90.3 FM programming will spotlight more performances by musicians in Akron and Kent as well.
With this agreement, Kent State University and Ideastream Public Media will build on the nationally recognized journalism program offered by the university, using resources to focus especially on developing more
diversified talent for the journalism profession.
More information about the public service operating agreement is available
at ideastream.org/together.
Original Report 9/9: Ideastream Public Media is looking to expand in
Northeast Ohio.
The Portager reports that Kent State Universitys Board of Trustees will
vote next week on whether to transfer operations of Public News/Talk 89.7
WKSU Kent/Akron to the operator of Public News/Talk 90.3 WCPN Cleveland, Classical 104.9 WCLV Lorain and PBS affiliate WVIZ Cleveland.
If approved, Ideastream will take control of WKSU on October 1. The
Portager reports that the eventual plan would be for WKSU and the rimshot
104.9 WCLV signal would be paired as the Public News/Talk station for the Cleveland and Akron markets, while 90.3 WCPN would assume the Classical programming.
The Portager report states that if the Kent State board of trustees
approves the agreement next Wednesday, WKSU employees that are offered positions at Ideastream will make at least their current wages, and some
will be offered increases to raise them to Ideastream’s compensation
levels, but Kent State will continue to contribute to their state
retirement benefits.
The following WKSU simulcasters would be part of the deal as well: 89.1
WKSV Thompson, 89.3 WKRW Wooster, 90.7 WNRK Norwalk, 91.5 WKRJ New Philadelphia, 94.7 W234CX Mansfield, and 95.7 W239AZ Ashland OH.

Lost Factor vs. the Song of Summer
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:00 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/ross/212631/lost-factor-vs-the-song-of-summer/
It makes sense that summer hits would be some of our most enduring. They
are often the songs most indelibly linked to place memories. They were the songs that were shared experiences, especially if they turned out to be the Song of the Summer. They are typically among the biggest songs of the year overall. But there are exceptions.
Of the 62 songs that Billboard has designated Song of the Summer between
1958 and 2020, less than a third have any significant Lost Factor — our calculation of a hit song’s path to relative obscurity. Lost Factor awards points for placement on the year-end Top 100, then divides those by last week’s spins according to BDSradio. Very few hits after 1980 received fewer than 100 monitored spins last week, so only 20 songs have a Lost Factor
over our dividing line of a 1.0at least for now, while radio stations are reliving summer memories as well.
I’ve been writing about Song of the Summer since summer 2004. I’ve been calculating the Lost Factor of the hits between 1960 and 1999 for about 18 months now. It was inevitable that the two most-loved franchises in the
RoRCU (Ross on Radio Column Universe) would ultimately meet.
My Summer Song rules have always been a little different than Billboard,
and more subjective — it’s not just the biggest song over a 12-week-period. There has to be tempo or some sort of summer feeling. In the late ‘00s, as pop music and Top 40 radio lost their footing, I often made contrarian
choices — “Ride” by 21 Pilots over “Can’t Stop the Feeling” or “One Dance”
in 2016; “Boom Boom Pow” over “I Gotta Feeling” in 2009. In 2014, I declared that the ice-bucket challenge had been more of a summer crowd
pleaser than either leading candidate, “Rude” by Magic! or “Fancy” by Iggy
Azalea.
That’s why I went with Billboard’s list, although I augmented it with a few of mine — “I Like It” along with “In My Feelings,” for instance. Had I been
available to regulate in the early 60s, there would have been words
exchanged about Billboards choice of “I’m Sorry” by Brenda Lee or “Roses
Are Red (My Love)” by Bobby Vinton. In 2004, I chose “Turn Me On,” not the
megahit that “We Belong Together” was. But Kevin Lyttle, not Mariah Carey, had the song that felt like summer. Because Billboard looked back to 1958,
I did too, although Lost Factors regular calculations have spanned 1960-99
so far.
“Theme From A Summer Place,” the 61-year-old year-end chart-topper that scored a perfect 100 on Lost Factor, is not on this list. It wasn’t a
summer hit. But not surprisingly, those early periods from Top 40’s first doldrums are the leaders, and yield one perfect score of their own. I am
happy to report that Donna Summer did have at least one Song of the Summer
with 1979’s “Bad Girls,” although “Hot Stuff” would have been even better
thematically. “Butter” by BTS, controversial for its lack of radio, is not on this list. It doesn’t have a year-end number yet.
Using year-end rankings to determine the top number, I based spins on
BDSradio monitored stations for Sept. 1–7, 2021, and for U.S. stations
only, meaning that Lost Factor rankings may vary from some of the annual rankings I’ve been doing over the past 15 months (which include Canada).
Not surprisingly, almost all of the songs in question were top 5 for their entire year or higher. Because the Labor Day weekend was involved, it’s likely that some songs were helped by Throwback Weekends, American Top 40 reruns and the like. Few of the findings are surprising, but I plan to
revisit these numbers later.
These are the Billboard’s Songs of Summer with higher than a 1.0 score.
Only six of the 15 are uptempo, and scores, except for No. 1, are
relatively low. Only two are from 2000 or later.
1 – Domenico Modugno, “Volare” (1958) (100 points)
2 – Zager & Evans, “In the Year 2525” (1969) (11)
3 – Paul Anka, Lonely Boy” (1959) (10)
4 – Bobby Vinton, “Roses Are Red (My Love)” (1962) (7)
5 – Brenda Lee, “I’m Sorry” (1960) (7)
6 – Bobby Lewis, “Tossin’ and Turnin’” (1961) (15)
7 – John Denver, “Annie’s Song” (1974) (6)
8 – Herb Alpert, “This Guy’s in Love With You” (1968) (5)
9 – Gilbert O’ Sullivan, “Alone Again (Naturally) (1972) (4)
10 – Andy Gibb, “Shadow Dancing” (1978) (4)
11 – Carpenters, “(They Long to Be) Close to You” (1970) (4)
12 – Los del Rio, “Macarena” (1996) (4)
13 – Bee Gees, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” (1971) (3)
14 – Stevie Wonder, “Fingertips Pt. II” (1963) (3)
15 – Matchbox Twenty, “Bent” (2000) (2)
16 – Donna Summer, “Bad Girls” (1979) (2)
17 – Supremes, “Where Did Our Love Go” (1964) (2)
18 – Jim Croce, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” (1973) (1)
19 – Iggy Azalea, “Fancy” (2014) (1)
20 – Troggs, “Wild Thing” (1966) (1)
Even “Fancy,” the song that lost to the Ice Bucket Challenge, is not quite “lost.” It’s ironic that “This Guy’s in Love With You” and “How Can You
Mend a Broken Heart” are both Songs of Summer within a few years of each other. Only the strolling gait of those songs make them summery; it also
makes them sound surprisingly like each other.
Here are the summer songs with the lowest Lost Factor scores. Notice the success of early ‘80s CHR titles, even going back to the doldrums summer of 1981. I didn’t rank my choices, if they differ from Billboard, here, but “Watermelon Sugar” and “Feel It Still” would have been No. 1 and 2. “Bad
Guy” would be No. 5. Thanks both to being the song of last summer and still being a current for some Mainstream AC stations, “Watermelon Sugar” got more than 5,000 spins last week.
1 – Police, “Every Breath You Take” (1983)
2 – Survivor, “Eye of the Tiger” (1982)
3 – Prince, “When Doves Cry” (1984)
4 – Rick Springfield, “Jessie’s Girl” (1981)
5 – Tears for Fears, “Shout” (1985)
6 – TLC, “Waterfalls” (1995)
7 – Black Eyed Peas, “I Gotta Feeling” (2009)
8 – Rihanna, “Umbrella” (2007)
9 – Beyoncé, “Crazy in Love” (2003)
10 DaBaby f/Roddy Ricch, “Rockstar” (2020)

2021 NAB Show/Radio Show Cancelled
Posted: 15 Sep 2021 07:13 AM PDT
https://radioinsight.com/headlines/212934/2021-nab-show-radio-show-cancelled/
The National Association of Broadcasters has just announced it has
cancelled the 2021 NAB Show scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from October 9–13, 2021 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The convention had already instituted a vaccine mandate for the convention,
but had seen major exhibitors pull out in recent days. Select content from
the show will be offered virtually.
The 2022 NAB Show is scheduled to take place from April 23-27, 2022 in Las Vegas.
In a memo to attendees, Chris Brown, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Global Connections and Events at the National Association of Broadcasters wrote:
For more than a year we have worked tirelessly to bring our industry
together safely in Las Vegas at NAB Show. Unfortunately, the pandemic and
surge of the Delta variant has presented unexpected and insurmountable challenges for our global community.
As we have always kept the best interest and safety of the industry as our priority, it has become apparent in the face of these challenges that we
can no longer effectively host NAB Show or our co-located events, the Radio Show and Sales and Management Television Exchange, in person.
NAB Show is the premiere destination for the media and entertainment
industry and we will not move forward with a show that delivers anything
less than the excellence our community has come to expect and deserves from
us.
While we are disappointed that we will not be together again in person next month, we look forward to converging at the 2022 NAB Show, April 23-27,
2022, to reignite our passion for our business and focus on a bright future ahead.
Stay tuned for details regarding virtual options for accessing select 2021

Brummer had this to say, My dream has finally come true, and I can’t stop smiling about it because I get to do what I love most everyday! The moment
I stepped foot into the XLC studio, it felt like home to me! I am so
grateful for this amazing opportunity and beyond blessed to be a part of
the XLC family! Thank you to Frank Wright and Karl Wertlzer for adding me
to the team!
The XLC family knows that Hannah will surpass any expectations with ease,
and is already a great addition to the team.
