Im a bit overwhelmed trying to start
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 11:09 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rngpba/im_a_bit_overwhelmed_trying_to_start/
I have been interested in amateurradio for the past few months, I first
gained interest because my school has a club, it hasnt met at all this
year, but Im hoping it will next year (Im a freshman studying computer
science) Im mostly interested in the homebrew stuff, but I dont have any specific projects in mind
at the moment my only goal is to contact my friend, she lives in a foreign country so, atleast to my understanding this is a non-trivial task, she has been working on it, I dont know how far shes gotten into it, but shell have
her license before me, Ive been adviced to use the no nonsense technician
study guide and Im trying to start as simple as possible
Im a bit intimidated by trying to buy a radio, Im a broke college student
so my budget is really max $100 .
this video helped me atleast figure out what questions I think I should be looking for at a high level mostly like who I want to contact, and as my
goal is my friend it requires a lot of range, im in the united state, and I believe shes in spain, so around 5,000 miles away. and the video made me realize Id need either High frequency or digital

Plaintext firmware dump for Yaesu FT-70D
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 03:50 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rn8s8g/plaintext_firmware_dump_for_yaesu_ft70d/
I got bored yesterday so I started looking into what itd take to customize
the firmware on my Yaesu FT-70D. /u/fuki__ posted some interesting data
here for the FT1DR but it didnt sound like they were able to dump the
device firmware. I looked at my FT-70D which seems to be a very similar CPU
(if not the same), and managed to get a plaintext dump from their updater.
Ill post a blog post/guide when I get a chance but tl;dr they embed the firmware image in the EXE resources and obfuscate it.
The obfuscation looks sort of annoying so I didnt reverse engineer it yet
but will provide a tool when I get around to writing the blog post.
Anyways, heres the firmware:
https://mega.nz/file/RNxSGaQC#ghU5eCR6IwAtOIyuRdMC_gkBxAr-_oLwXGcCwRctw6g
IDA Pro has a loader for this CPU (Renesas H8SX, Advanced mode). The first
few words seem like theyre part of a vector table. Jump to the first one as
an address, define it as code, create a function, and IDA should start analyzing everything. That should be address 0x142a. submitted by

Solar Flux is 134 & Sunspots are 137. The MUF (Maximum Usable Frequency) is already 29.32 MHz, so today is going to be like yesterday, if not even
better. Im currently on 12 meters working on picking up states but Europe
is strong into Utah this morning. Im hearing Africa and South America on 10 meters. 15 meters is open everywhere. 73 and enjoy the great propagation!

Unsure Quite What To Do
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 12:38 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rn4riq/unsure_quite_what_to_do/
So, this past Saturday I tested and got my Technician class license.
Id like to go ahead and get a good transceiver to be able to scan and transmit - Im old enough where my budget can handle a $500 device, and Id prefer one that I can grow into as I test into higher levels and learn more about the radio arts.
Mobility is not an issue; I really want to set it up at home and am not worried about traveling (so I would prefer against handheld).
I would appreciate any recommendations from the members of this forum! submitted by /u/SirFluffkin

I’m just getting started with amateur radio, and I’m also a recent college grad in Mechanical Engineering with a solid background in electrical, too. Whenever I look for jobs, I see more postings for RF engineers than
mechanical. I think in a few years I’ll go back for a masters in something. Maybe by then I’ll be really into radio and decide to change career paths a little. I’m just curious if anyone has done anything similar. submitted

Rohn telescopic masts
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 01:29 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rn5v08/rohn_telescopic_masts/
Has anyone used the ROHN telescopic masts? I had the idea of pouring a 8” diameter sonatube concrete pier to a depth of 4 ft. Cast a rebar slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the lower tube section up about 36” .
The Rohn mast would slip over the rebar. Then extend the mast with my
antenna to a height of 28 ft. The antenna would be above the 28 ft height.
I was also going to tether the Rohn mast with two aluminum brackets. One to
my exposed foundation and another at the peak of my roof. ( 24 ft )
Of course I would ground the antenna and the mast to a copper rod adjacent
to this set up.
This is going to be a spring project of course.
Opinions would be appreciated.

What is this worth? Kenwood TS-850S with manuals
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 11:48 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rn3pkj/what_is_this_worth_kenwood_ts850s_with_manuals/
I have a Kenwood TS-850S I am trying to sell but in my ignorance I am
trying to guage a good price for it. I used eham.net to search the
classifieds to see on a comparable value; I thought perhaps $450/500. It
was pulled from my fathers rig after his passing and has sat in a temp controlled environment. No mic, no PSU, but three manuals. Of course no
manuals means not tested. Any thoughts on this? I have had one or two
offers below what I pegged it at and Im hoping to avoid losing money
because I am not familiar with this stuff. Thank you in advance.

Antenna question
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 11:58 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rn3x0v/antenna_question/
Yet a another antenna question…
TLDR; HOA, temporary antenna, need to get signal coming from front side of house
If you are still reading this…
In an HOA, so I need a temporary antenna. One that is easy to put up and
take down. We are in a standard box house. See picture
https://i.imgur.com/BrQJuhx.jpg. I have an Ed Fong antenna attached to the outside railing of the deck. Unfortunately, the 2m traffic I want to hear
is on the front side of the house. I need to either put an antenna in the
front (again, HOA so not unless I can hide it in the front yard and bury
the coax) or get something on/over the roof. I’m too chicken to get up on
the roof or a ladder that tall. But I have no neighbors behind me so
putting something like a 2m car antenna on the eaves would probably be
great. Again, chicken.
I was thinking of attaching a telescoping pole to the outside railing of
the deck. I figure at least 30 feet. I was thinking of something like this
https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/roh-h30. It says “All telescoping mast installations must be guyed or bracketed (sold separately) and should be performed by experienced or licensed installers.” I’m assuming this is true when putting this up for a few hours at a time too?
Attic has that foil insulation.

How do you mark your ferrites?
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 06:16 AM PST

they are. My Brother P-Touch H100LB label printer labels wont stick, and I tried a sharpie that wouldnt stick either (it smudged off of a touch).
People who mark their ferrites, what do you use/how do you do it?

Anyone mess with those big 110W VHF Kenwood mobiles?
Posted: 23 Dec 2021 05:42 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rmvy0q/anyone_mess_with_those_big_110w_vhf_kenwood/
They keep tempting me on eBay and I keep trying to tell myself that I DON’T need one, but with the prices being what they are… I kinda want one just
for fun.
But realistically, what fun, if any, can really be had with 100 watts on
VHF that can’t be had with 50? The only things I can think of are VHF
contest days or more chances of making contacts on 146.520. It could make
for a very beefy APRS beacon, but I don’t really need that either.
Just looking for people to talk me out of or into one of these. submitted
