All Bands 30-10 meters wide open 22 December 1800 Zulu

With Solar Flux at 132 and Sunspots at 147 (the highest for both in the new Solar Cycle) the bands are responding well. This is not just Sporadic E on
10 meters, either...I just worked New Zealand and South Africa on 10
meters, FT8 with strong signals into northern Utah. and also hearing many
South American signals. 73 de K7UV submitted by /u/zfrost45

Do you have QSL cards waiting for you at your incoming bureau?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 11:42 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rmd1rs/do_you_have_qsl_cards_waiting_for_you_at_your/

As I go through another batch of cards to send out, I get sad that I have
yet another stack of QSL cards that will not get to their intended
    recipient.
With the addition of the FT* modes, and the bands getting better as the sun begins to awaken from its slumber, folks are working quite a bit of DX.
Perhaps some of you are newer to DXing, and dont even know about the
    incoming bureau.
Even with LotW and eQSL, many stations still exchange paper QSLs, and many
use the bureau system to save some costs associated with that.
If youre working DX, you may want to make sure you keep some
envelopes/postage funds on hand at your incoming bureau to make sure your
cards get to you and are not discarded.
For US amateurs check the ARRL incoming bureau page to get information for
your call district. Many other countries have a similar service.
Not all dispatchers will attempt to contact you before discarding your
QSLs. So if you want the cards, keep something on hand with them to make
    sure you get them.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 02:14 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rmg7ra/cw_lets_speed_things_up/

Economy of words really helps a CW QSO move along, especially if we are
    sending slow.
    1) You dont have to repeat my call and your call on every transmission.
Just send BK to hand it over to me.
    2) You dont have to spell out things like WATTS, just send W.
    3) You dont have to repeat things like WATTS. Once is enough.
    4) You dont have to repeat NAME. Once is fine and OP works too.
    4) When wrapping things up, short and sweet does the trick. submitted

    FT-991A PSK-31 Setup

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 11:26 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rmcp06/ft991a_psk31_setup/

Im recently starting using my FT-991A with fldigi using PSK-31. Have had
some successes communicating with contacts up to 2500+ miles away. But honestly, dont fully understand all the settings. The FT-991A user manual
is really not that great. Ive seen postings and YouTube videos of the
various FT-991A settings for digital modes in general but I dont see any specific to PSK-31. For example, they all say to set the menu item 062
(Data Mode) to "Others" but there is also a "PSK" option for that menu
item. Interestingly, depending on whether I set it to "Others" or "PSK", depends on what stations I can receive, i.e., I can hear certain PSK31
stations when set to "Others" and other PSK31 stations when set to "PSK". Anybody out there have some suggestions on specific FT-991A settings for
    PSK31 configuration?

Former ARRL Legal Counsel's pay to play scheme for selling the ham bands

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 01:24 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rlokyj/former_arrl_legal_counsels_pay_to_play_scheme_for/

    Hey r/amateurradio ,
So I ran across what looks to be a pay to play scheme by former ARRL
counsel Chris Imlay, W3KD, selling access to the ham bands to private corporations that retained his legal services.
    Who is Chris Imlay?

    https://preview.redd.it/acoywognqy681.png?width=1699&format=png&auto=webp&s=78848687192744cdcec10900d5d9cdcbb805728f
    https://fcc.report/ELS/MRTC-Motorsport-Communications/1964-EX-ST-2018 -
Chris gets an STA for race vehicle telemetry in the 70cm ham band. https://fcc.report/ELS/Winged-Vision/0009-EX-ST-2021 - Chris gets an STA in
the 13cm ham band for a client. https://fcc.report/ELS/Streaming-Global/0846-EX-ST-2021 - Chris gets
another STA in the 13cm ham band for a client. https://fcc.report/ELS/Aerial-Video-Systems/1256-EX-ST-2020 - Chris gets an
STA in the 9cm ham band. https://fcc.report/ELS/Circuit-of-the-Americas-LLC/1545-EX-ST-2021 - Chris
gets an STA for the entire 70cm ham band, says ARRL supports it in 2012. No publications from ARRL on the matter.
"This application also proposes the use of land mobile and Amateur Radio frequencies for video production and for telemetry. The use of amateur allocations in this STA application at have been coordinated with the
    American Radio Relay League,Incorporated. "

Chris was the ARRL legal counsel until he abruptly resigned in 2018. So for
6 years he was representing the ARRL and Circuit of the Americas. To me,
this reads like he was selling access to the ham bands with his position at
the ARRL. I understand that temp STAs are not uncommon, but what I find
quite uncommon is that the ARRL would approve of the F1 track in Austin, TX taking over the entire 70cm band with zero input from the ham radio
community AND it just so happens that the person making the filing was the legal rep to both orgs at the same time.
I called the ARRL regulatory affairs person, who promptly stated that he
had no knowledge of this and would need to investigate to understand what happened. submitted by /u/ARRLforSale

I’ve had pretty good luck using MFJ’s EFHW except I’ve damaged the wire umpteen times.
Does anyone have experience with suspending the match box/feedpoint up 20
or so feet and running the antenna wire as a flat top as opposed to an
inverted L with the box on the ground? I’d love to hear your experiences. Thanks, Patrick submitted by /u/Easy-Adhesiveness337

    Question ideas for an interview

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 04:05 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rm3vsv/question_ideas_for_an_interview/

First of all, hello members of r/amateurradio, Ill try to keep this as
short as possible. Im a Uni student and for one of my classes Ive been
assigned to conduct an interview of any kind, no matter the field and my
mind went to my uncle, whos a "Radio Amateur" (Im sorry if thats not the correct term, but that would be the direct translation from my language)
and who Ive visited this summer. He showed me his setup, established connections with people from all over the globe and even gave me one of his postcards(?), overall he tried to keep it all simple because I believe it
can be very overwhelming for someone new to process that much information
so he wanted to keep me interested, which he did, mostly because of his passion.
Now for the main reason Im making this post, outside of the basic questions youd get asked in an interview, what are some questions YOUd like to be
asked as a fellow Radio Amateur like him or what do you think would be some questions that would bring out the best of this hobby from someone.
Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays to all of you!! submitted by /u/Tephye

    How WIDE should I go?

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 09:51 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rmamlk/how_wide_should_i_go/

I have been using APRS for location tracking and communication in the
outdoors for a few months now and it has been working great. I have an
FT-3DR that Ill carry on hikes, and FTM-400XDR in the car for digipeating
and sending out its own beacons.

I did some reading on the digi path, to give myself the best chance of
getting out to an igate when Im in the wilderness. I have been using the default WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1, but if I can expand the path without causing clogs
in the system, I would like to; especially for the HT. I am mostly
concerned with the HT, because in many circumstances it will immediately be using the first hop with my cars digipeater.
From what Ive read, I can add a hop by using WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2. Again, that should be sufficient, but on the HT I would like to get another hop if I
can. However, the site I was reading from said that some digipeaters will outright ignore WIDE3-3 and above.

So, should I stick with WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2, or is there a better option? I am mostly using this in the mountains of Idaho and Oregon. submitted by /u/LorenWard

    ID-52 Repeater database

Hi everyone. I’ve always been a Yaesu guy as just like the ruggedness and durability of them but have been watching a bunch of IC-52 videos on
YouTube. Not knowing the Icom environment at all can someone explain to me
what I am seeing at 4 minutes of this video. Where is this repeater
database coming from? How many repeater can you out in the database? Is
this preloaded? If this has to be user loaded how easy is the process to
    load the HT?
Seems ideal for someone that likes to travel and can pull up repeater and
have a QSO regardless of new town or state.

Keying up on repeater without identifying?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2021 04:48 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rlsrjy/keying_up_on_repeater_without_identifying/

Hey there. Im VERY new to ham so please be gentle.
I got an HT radio (Yaesu FT-65R) because I was told that there was a lot I could learn about radio from just listening and HTs are an affordable introduction to the hobby. "You dont need a license to listen" etc. I was
very excited when I received my radio today, I ran the scan function a few times but all I could hear were FM stations- while I was really impressed
with the audio quality on this little radio I was a little disappointed.
The next thing I did was program in a few local repeaters, but then I found
out Id need to "key up" to access the repeater. Obviously, I didnt want to
do that before finding out if that was considered a transmission and OK to
do with the intention of listening. I went to Google and found a lot of contradictory information, some saying it was probably illegal, others
saying it was totally fine and common practice. First, Im wondering if
there is a consensus on this. If it makes a difference Im in Canada, but
from what Ive read it doesnt look like theres a huge difference in the
wording used by the Canadian and American regulations, in fact the Canadian regulations seem a little more vague. Second, if Im not allowed to listen
to repeaters, what can I do with my radio other than listen to Christmas
music? (Im expecting to get my license in a few months, just waiting for courses to be announced.)
    Thanks for reading.

Edit: Nevermind, I was mistakenly under the impression you needed to key up
to "log in" to the repeater Im just dumb. Thanks for the help guys :)

Selective Level meter (power supply issue)

    Posted: 22 Dec 2021 05:32 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rm5byx/selective_level_meter_power_supply_issue/

I bought this quite heavy selective level meter off OLX for 40$ (local
pickup): https://ibb.co/album/8gYP89 . however the owner did not had the
power cable for it. So, I need to hack the power in port it to make it more universal 3pin square sockets of now a days (or just directly solder a
power cable (2-pin) to the power module). However, I was wondering if it is safe to power such old device (70s) ? what are the chances that capacitors
(or something else) might blow up? The back of the power module has serial
port male which connects to the serial port female when I slide that power module in. Is it better to replace the whole module with new smps based
    power supply? Thanks
Update: Added a power cable, and turned the power module on. Waited for 30
sec and checked for hot capacitors in the power module nothing is hot or
smells funny. then I inserted the power module to the device and viola, it turns on and shows frequency on the dial. Although now I need to know where
to connect my antenna and where to get the audio out. searched for manual online but could not find anything. guess I have to find out the trial and error way. submitted by /u/yesilovethis

Hi, Im not actually a ham and I hope this is in the right place
I had picked up the ISS repeater and a couple of other satellites using an
SDR and a UV5R (dont worry, I had it transmit-disabled) in the past, and I
just got an Alinco DJ-X11 which Ive been working on programming. Obviously
this is a lot more advanced than a Baofeng but Im not sure how the SSB satellites really work frequency-wise, or which amateur satellites in
general would be most likely to have traffic on them.
And if anybody has anything else (satellite or otherwise) they think I
might miss coming from an outsiders perspective feel free to throw that
