    Tuning and station identification

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 05:22 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcwjm2/tuning_and_station_identification/

This feels like a dumb question but Im reading mixed things online. Ive
scoured my Tech and General books and Im not finding a straight answer.
Primary question: are you required to identify your station when tuning an antenna? Does this apply when using an auto-tuner? Id assume the answer is
yes to both of these questions. That said, do most hams actually do this? Secondary question: how does this work if youre tuning in digital portions
of the band? E.g., if Im tuning on 14.074 and Im using FT8, should I just
send a free text message right before like CALLSIGN test? Or should you go
to CW or phone portions and tune there and hope your SWR remains good
enough when you move back to digital portions? I cant imagine thats right
as then how would you ever tune on 30m? submitted by /u/rycolos

Back in the Long Ago; Inspiration

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 12:30 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcqi6p/back_in_the_long_ago_inspiration/

Back in the early 1970s, I discovered shortwave radio. Within the first
year, I discovered WWV, and heard the hourly solar and terrestrial activity reports.
I was about eight years of age, and never heard of sunspots, or geomagnetic anythings. But, Skylab was just deployed, and I read about the artificial eclipse that they used to study the Sun.
Inspired by all of this new sounds and cool concepts, I did everything I
could to learn about electronics, shortwave radio, propagation of radio
waves, Morse code, and so on.

What is YOUR story? How did you start your radio journey, and what inspired
    you to even start?
I look forward to your comments in which you share your inspiration -- and
what drew you to amateur radio -- and a bit about your journey since

Radio related: why cant you hear lightning on broadcast FM

    Posted: 10 Dec 2021 02:23 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rd5pqv/radio_related_why_cant_you_hear_lightning_on/

Yet you can hear it on like the NOAA channels on 162MHz. Only thing i can figure is because the NOAA channel is 25KHz where the broadcast FM is

Help me find a way to get power to this? MFJ-722 OPTIMIZER. Specs call for 2.1mm coax connector, 12v, 300 ma. But I can't find anything that looks
like it will fit that jack. Thanks!

Does the Roof Count as Ground?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 06:27 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcxtjz/does_the_roof_count_as_ground/

So, lets say I want to put up a dipole. "They" say you should put it at
least half a wavelength above ground. Now, whether or not you agree with
that distance, my question is: What if I operate from the roof of my
20-floor apartment building? Is the rooftop now the new ground or am I 20 floors above ground as far as the antenna is concerned? submitted by /u/DirtyScoobie

Hello OMs, I'm licenced HAREC. I'm trying to build my own SWR meter, and looking for information about wiring up this pcb. I don't see the forward
or reverse pin. It's only "DUT" or "REF" as shown on the picture. Any information or advice are welcome. 73's.

Counterpoise question - where to buy or how to make one

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 10:03 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcnane/counterpoise_question_where_to_buy_or_how_to_make/

I have what is probably a silly question - whats the easiest way to make a counterpoise or where can one buy one?
I have a few antennas Im playing around with, an EFRW, the HFJ-350M and am
also looking for a lightweight packable EFRW antenna to take to the park
(prob a packtenna). All of these require a counterpoise but its not clear
to me what length is ideal and also what type of wire it should be made
from and how to actually connect it to the various antennas.
My HFJ-350 has a little port on the side which I assume is for a banana
plug but it doesnt really specify what size etc. I have a comet CGW-560
which slips on the end of the antenna but I find it kind of bulky and
annoying in my limited space on the balcony. Id love to just have a single
wire I can plug in and adjust as needed, preferably right into the little
port or maybe with an alligator clip so it can be used with the other
    antennas too?
My ultimax 100 uses the coax as counterpoise which I hate - I get RF in the shack and given it needs so much coax in my small balcony, the coax has to
run direclty underneath the antenna in a parallel fashion. I think not
ideal. Id love to just attach a counterpoise wire somehow to it and dangle
it off the balcony, while putting a choke right at the antenna. Prob would
do the same with any other portable EFRW I end up getting too.
so: Any commercially made counterpoise wires you can recommend? I guess a banana plug or perhaps an alligator clip at the end would be ideal? I dont
love the CGW-560s ring as it seems less compatible when using other types
of antenna mounts. If Im to make one myself (although Im really not handy)
    - any easy ways to make it and what type of wire is recommended? Alligator
clip on end? Some type of spool? Bonus - best place in Candada to buy one/supplies to make one? The CX-65 on this page http://www.dxstore.com/comet_hfp.html seems perfect but after shipping it
ends up being prohibitively expensive to Canada for what is essentially a
spool of wire ($150 CAD after shipping for some copper????)
    Thanks :) submitted by /u/gimmesnows

    Decent walkie talkies for families?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 01:52 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcs967/decent_walkie_talkies_for_families/

I am an inactive ham so apologies if FRS/GMRS discussion is out of band for this sub...
My kids want some walkie talkies for Xmas. Theyre young so I dont want to
buy them anything too nice/fragile, but would also prefer that theyre not
total garbage and we can continue to use them as they grow up.
Any advice for decent enough FRS equipment? submitted by /u/doublemazaa

    M1 mac, digital stuff, virtualization

    Posted: 09 Dec 2021 01:06 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcr9kj/m1_mac_digital_stuff_virtualization/

Im curious if anyone has tried running various ham tools like Winlink /
vara, wsjtx, or fldigi in a virtualized Windows environment on MacOS with
an M1 chip? For virtualization, Parallels looks to support the M1 mac supposedly, but I dont want to buy Parallels and Windows licenses and then
    find it wont work.
By way of background, winlink / vara is windows only, I believe, and due to recent security changes in MacOS, tools like chirp, wsjtx and fldigi wont
run since theyre not signed. (EDIT Im not saying its impossible to run
these applications on MacOS by disabling various security checks. Im
interested in virtualization as an alternate path.) I do have a windows computer, but it would be nice to free up some desk space and run
    everything from my mac.
And also: Is there something we can do to help these small developers get
their code signed so we can install it on a modern mac? Maybe we could
register a developer account and sign a number of important tools through
the same account? submitted by /u/LeisureActivities
