6 meter 1/4 wavelength monopole

I have a 5 foot steel flagpole that I want to use as a 1/4 monopole 6 meter antenna. I never built one before. I thought about using 18awg wire for the radials. Does it matter what angle the wires are or can they sort of droop
or hang loose from the flag pole? How would I tune it compare to a dipole?
I only built dipole antennas. submitted by /u/joe_rt

Hello!
Today I activated my first park with my WRC and ft-897. I didn’t operate on the beach but back behind some trees on soil (not sand). Should I/ how
should I clean my gear? The air has salt in it so I’m assuming that if I do not clean them they will rust.

Advice? - First DMR HT
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:39 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rc1or6/advice_first_dmr_ht/
My first post didnt go over so well with some of the less eloquent members
of this subreddit so I will rephrase.
I am looking to purchase my first DMR handheld radio. However, a major use
case for this radio will be while traveling. As such, it would be nice if
the HT had both DMR and analog. That way I am able to only travel with one radio, programming cable, and charger. Is this something that is possible?
The radio will mainly used to hit repeaters or communicate with other HTs within mountain ranges or on ridge lines; line of sight or near line of
sight. The AnyTones seem very nice, but are a bit out of my price range.
What radio would you recommend for cheaper, if anything? I would love to
get a nice HT, but this is going to go skiing, hiking, etc. and there is a
good chance of it breaking. Im not looking for intuitive menus or superior electrical design (that can be for my next radio).
My target price range is below 130 if possible, but others stated that is impossible. submitted by /u/gclockwood

How many channels in 915 band for DSSS transmission (part 15 question)
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 10:03 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcb954/how_many_channels_in_915_band_for_dsss/
Im having trouble finding the answer to this google. My question is not for Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum but rather for Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum.
In terms of Part 15 compliance, is there any guidance for how many channels
a device can choose from where the device transmits using a 500khz channel?
Ill be transmitting at <30dbm.
Ive found guidance for FHSS transmitters with the FCC but not one for DSSS. Maybe my google skills are not up to snuff.
With the 26mhz available bandwidth, my guess would be about 50 non
overlapping channels if I used straight division, but it cant be that easy
can it? Is there any guidance on the required spacing between channels? submitted by /u/mchamst3r

*NOOB* Low power high utility off grid setup - resources/video
recommendations
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 10:48 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcbxr2/noob_low_power_high_utility_off_grid_setup/
Hi everyone! I started to get into ham a few days ago after reading one paragraph of one page of the SAS survival guide, and at the first mention
of the word ‘radio’ I put the book down and started reading everything I could about radios. Talk about rabbit hole, I thought it was simple as
buying an ‘emergency’ radio off of Amazon or something. Anyway I ended up getting really interested in getting my license (Canada) and learning how
to operate a radio. I’m dirt broke right now but I’ve got some books and a little baofeng in my cart and I’ve already made my first contact with my local club etc but I really have no idea what I’m talking about here so please bear with me. I’m also not the most eloquent so I apologize.
I’m really interested in the prospect of setting up a “ham shack” at my grandpa’s remote cabin. The area is sparsely populated with a few of my grandparent’s friends (from their profession) and some family members. They’re all getting pretty old and they don’t get any cell service out there, our cabin is at the road and anyone going to theirs has to walk
through our front lawn to get to the dock where they park their boats.
(Very close knit) I figured it might be of some utility to have some means
of communication that’s accessible in case of emergencies and the perfect opportunity to satisfy my interest in doomsday scenarios and what not.
We’ve got a generator out there that we generally only use at night and
very sparingly, and my grandpa’s got some solar panels out there kicking around he’s never gotten around to figuring out. Ideally I’d like to find a way to set something up that operates on relatively little power to the
effect that a small solar set up could run the operation without too much
help during the day. I’ve always meant to look into solar anyhow so again this presents a good opportunity for a little challenge.
Anyway my question to YOU is, can you refer me to any resources, youtube channels, websites or books etc that talks about just this type of set up
in detail? I’d really appreciate any help I could get. Thank you!

Need your two-man, backpacking recommendations for trail and water use.
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 10:01 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rcb7wt/need_your_twoman_backpacking_recommendations_for/
Hey guys. Im looking for advice for a two radio setup. I havent run across someone that matches my use case so Id thought I ask for some help.
Looking for the ideal two-person backpack hiking and paddling setup. For paddling, I use a packraft, both on rivers and on open lakes. This includes
the Great Lakes. Generally, I dont have access to a vehicle at the
trailhead.
I have an Inreach Mini, but looking for a two radio setup as a backup. Some
of my trips can get a little dangerous, especially paddling out to Islands
in the Great Lakes, so having an alternative is nice.
What Id like:
My location on a map for family members to see.
Two-way contact with search and rescue.
The ability for someone to use a radio and locate my coordinates.
Communication with a second party with a cheaper, backup radio.
SMS text messages. So cool! I didnt know hams could do this. Is it free?
User sqweeeeee mentioned earlier yesterday that some hams can do something
he called "voice alert." He said this allows a radio to alert a user of
other nearby radios. That seems really useful.
Listen for weather reports, especially on the water.
Durable and waterproof, or at least easy enough to modify with contact
cement or seam sealer.
What Ive found from my research:
It seems the Anytone 878UVII Plus with the latest firmware will accomplish most, if not all of this. Dont know about voice alerts though. Also, the
SMS send and receive stuff is so new, its hard to find much on that feature worded in a way friendly to non-ham users like myself.
For the second, or partner radio. Im looking at a TYT-568 $35 CAD, or for
more functionality, the TYT-UV88 for $60 or TYT-UV98 for $78 (suggested by
John at Mountain Parameters).
For antennas, John recommended a 5/8" Smiley telescoping Super Stick tuned
to 155 mhz for Search and Rescue for both radios. He also recommended is a thick, tuned counterpoise for land-based backpacking. If I had to get a
second antenna, he suggested it should be a 1/2 wave without counterpoise
for water use.
As for the price range, Im flexible. The second radio will never be used
for anything fancy, so its fine if its kept basic. I know a fully-featured second radio setup might be an Anytone, Radiocity GD77, or TYT 8000D.
However, the guys I travel with dont play around with their gear and will
only ever use voice communication.
How am I doing here? Is there something else I should consider? Would you choose these radios for this setup? Can you really send and receive SMS messages? Can the Anytone do the voice alert?
Look forward to hearing your thoughts guys. Lots of questions. Please go
easy on me, its only my second day looking into ham radio.
UPDATE: I should note that I fully understand that contacting a ship,
marina, or SAR is for serious life-threatening emergencies only. I will get
a license if I decide I want to regularly talk to others. submitted by /u/UncleFred-

uSDX forked out to (tr)uSDX
Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:47 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rbooam/usdx_forked_out_to_trusdx/
Manuel (DL2MAN) & Guido (PE1NNZ) have decided to fork out uSDX and create (tr)uSDX Project. Unlike uSDX, (tr)uSDX is not licensed under CC-BY-SA but licensed with more restrictive CC-BY-ND. Manuel has stated on the official
uSDX forum uSDX source code will still remain open source and anyone is
free to interpret its version of uSDX. The (tr)uSDX is currently in the prototype stage, and it seems to be the final official version derivative
of the immensely popular uSDX project which started a couple of years back.
It seems DL2MAN & PE1NNZ is unhappy about the rampant abuse by the Chinese clone manufacturers and have decided to go for a restricted version of the creatives common license (CC-BY-ND)

of you guys/gals had used it and give me some feedback on using stainless
as antenna wire... Otherwise I will just have to test it next spring.

tried PVC but it droops... All the instructions say use 1/2 fiberglass
tubing for the cross bars, I have just not found any place selling it...

What am I doing wrong?

Noob question here, as I have only had my license for 3 weeks, I am
presently in Cheyenne, WY. in my semi, (mobile ID-5100) and cannot get a response from the KC7SNO B (447.225). So I switched to the FM repeater here (146.820 DUP-). I can RX other stations, but when I TX I am either not
getting out or not getting a response. How do I differentiate between being ignored and not hitting the repeater or other stations?
Also, on DStar, how do I know what reflector to use to route to a distant station, like my home repeater (K5TIT in Dallas) or somewhere else?
Many thanks in advance yall.

Yaesu FT-8900R Full Duplex, Is a diplexer needed?

I am planning on building a dual band Yagi antenna to work satellites. I
found plans on antennas which have the 2m and 70cm band coax together, as
in the coax is connected to the 70cm and 2m elements at the same time.
Heres the link:
http://www.amateurradio.bz/4_dollar_satellite_antenna.html This antenna design worries me as I feel as if transmitting would let out
the magic smoke due to both bands being connected.
Im looking at homebrew options for dual band Yagis, and cant find nearly
much info as Id like on homebrew. Most use a diplexer, and some dont use
any. With the radio I have, is a diplexer needed? Any homebrew antennas you guys can reccomend?

Is it better to shorten a dipole antenna to have better SWR that is
measured based on its 1/2 wavelength or use an antenna tuner instead to a measured dipole antenna?

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rbekaf/is_it_better_to_shorten_a_dipole_antenna_to_have/
I figured that it could be better to radiate a dipole antenna at exactly
the 1/2 wavelength and use the antenna tuner to handle the SWR since SWR doesn’t define a good antenna anyways. submitted by /u/joe_rt

Alinco DJ-MD5XTG CTCSS Tones Missing on CP Write to DMR Radio

I have an Alinco DJ-MD5XTG. I did the firmware update on the radio to Ver. 1.11-T. Im using CPS Ver. 1.09a. After the update I did the radio reset as directed in the instructions. When I write my CP back to my radio, the
CTCSS information for my analog channels is not coming across to the radio.
Ive also tried loading my original factory CP to the radio with adding some analog channels and it does the same thing (does not carry the CTCSS over).
Has anyone had this issue, and do you know a fix? What am I doing wrong? submitted by /u/californiajason
