Fun, Easy Kit Radios for Novices?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2021 11:04 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/raew9z/fun_easy_kit_radios_for_novices/

    Hi all,
Years ago, I took a ham radio license on a lark, passed it, then never did anything with my license. My wife recently surprised me with a radio advent calendar, in which you build from scratch a working FM Radio; heres a link: https://www.merchoid.com/retro-radio-advent-calendar/?fcountry=US&gclid=CjwKCAiAhreNBhAYEiwAFGGKPH9GntxIJpErqni462t8Mm4qRjl04iM7N77K_7V_tr4nqbSTba4ejRoCGVQQAvD_BwE
Ive really enjoyed working with this kit and would like to build a
transceiver at some point. Are there any easy transceivers that can be
built by a novice? Ive read about low-power, QRP rigs and that seems right
up my alley. I looked at some, like the Rockmite 40 meter kit, but I
couldnt find any instructions, only schematics, and I dont feel comfortable relying solely on that at this stage. Also, it would be fun to involve my
kids, who are still quite young.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! submitted by /u/AcrobaticMulberry6

What is the difference between log-periodic antennas like this (assuming

WSJT-X core developer G4WJS is a silent key

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 03:39 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r9ssq5/wsjtx_core_developer_g4wjs_is_a_silent_key/

    See K1JTs announcement here:
    https://wsjtx.groups.io/g/main/message/30503
I am very sorry to convey the sad news that Bill Somerville, G4WJS, died suddenly and unexpectedly a few days ago. He was only about 65 years old.
Bill was a dear friend and very close colleague, though (as is often the
case with worldwide ham radio friendships) we had met in person only a few times. In 2013 he was the first to join me in forming a core development
group for WSJT-X, which at that time was at program version 0.99. Bill has
been closely involved with WSJT-X and related software projects ever since.
Our free, open-source software could not have achieved its extensive
worldwide popularity and influence in ham radio without Bills essential contributions. In addition to writing code for important portions of the Qt-based user interface for WSJT-X, Bill helped to bring the overall
program structure more nearly up to professional standards. Moreover, he devoted countless hours to program support, patiently answering users
    questions on WSJT-related forums.
I have only started to think about the many ways in which I will miss Bill
-- not no mention how we all will miss his immense and positive impact on WSJT-X and related projects. For more than eight years Bill and I
communicated closely and regularly on ham radio topics, sometimes many
times per day. Perhaps I will be able to write more about it in the near future.
Rest in peace, dear friend G4WJS. \-- Joe, K1JT submitted by /u/sportscliche

    Any tips for earning Canadaward?

My station is in Pennsylvania, and Im setting my sights on RACs Canadaward.
Its like Worked All States, but hipster.
So I know for WAS it can be helpful to put the state QSO parties on the calendar. Are there any tips for snagging the Canadian entities, especially
    the territories?
The other issue that Im running into is that it seems like a smaller
percentage of Canadian operators QSL via LoTW (just my perception). So Ill
    have to request paper QSLs.
Is this a popular award? Is it a tough one to earn? submitted by /u/1KilgoreTrout

Since most dipoles are recommended to be 1/2 wavelength because of the radiation pattern, wouldn’t a 1.5 wavelength dipole be better because the radiation would have more gain without the radiation canceling itself out?

A no code ham works a CW contest.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 06:52 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r9hb2z/a_no_code_ham_works_a_cw_contest/

Once in a blue moon I get a good clear weekend to play radio on, and as
luck would have it, this weekend was the ARRL 160 meter contest. Excellent,
I thought. I have a 160M add on trap for my vertical Ive been meaning to
try out, and this will give me motivation to actually install it and tune
    up.
Well, that add on trap was.... troublesome at best, It would resonate at a super LOW resistance, and throw off every other band on the vertical. I
wasnt ready to raise and lower a 50 vertical repeatedly to get all the
tuning stubs for 80-10 back into spec, and still have a basically
    unworkable 160M antenna.
So down comes the trap, the vertical tunings for 80-10 go right back into whack, and I need a plan B.
Fortunately when I put my tower a couple weeks ago, I put two pulleys and
rope loops at the 40 level for flags, decoration, and most importantly: dipoles! Unfortunately wire aint cheap these days but I have a large reel
of 16GA stranded in the barn. I grab one of these from the old junk bin, a
few insulators, and the 200 measuring tape, and I get to cutting. Within 20 minutes I have the beginnings of a dipole up the tower, and the ends tied
off to my barn and a neighbors pine tree. I did text my neighbor to tell
him Im up to my nerd stuff again and that theres a wire in his tree, hes
cool with all that. A few back and forths with the antenna analyzer and the wire snips, and were tuned. Walking a 160M dipole end to end several times
will get your step count up for the day.
Okay great, the 160M dipole is up, resonant around 1880 with a decent
bandwidth (for 160), need to have a quick dinner with some friends that was arranged a while ago and then its contest time!
After dinner and before turning on the rig I pull up the ARRL website to
get a quick glance at the rules and exchange. The FIRST line on the page: "
For Amateurs worldwide to exchange information with W/VE amateurs on
160-meter CW. " CW? CW!?..... balls.
Up until this point I had no idea the ARRL 160 was a CW only contest. My
bad for not looking into that a few days ago, I just saw ARRL 160 on the
WA7BNM contest calendar stopped reading apparently.
Well folks, I am NOT a CW operator by any stretch, despite being a ham for
over 10 years at this point, and having a collection of straight keys because...well... I never got the hang of it.Despite a concentrated effort
in 2015 to train myself on LCWO, I was never able to get a grip on CW QSOs.
The dits and dahs always blended together after 5 or 6 letters, and my past attempts at CW contacts have always ended in "QSB QSB SRY OM 73".
I can however, usually identify strings of characters (Thanks to LCWOs
training methods), which I suppose thats what call signs are, and usually
these contests have short simple exchanges. I decided, why not, lets give
it a try. I had some training wheels though. On the computer I put up a
morse chart and an audio waterfall so I could "read back" characters if my
head ran behind my ears. I only ran S&P (search and pounce), often
lingering on a station for a few of their calls so I could be sure of their call sign and perhaps catch another one of their contacts so I could hear
their section ahead of time. On the transmit side, as an S&P station, 99%
of my transmissions were ND8D and 5NN OH, I practiced that a few times at a higher speed so I wouldnt feel like Im dragging these operators down. I
decided to use my Kent TP1-B paddle.
Slowly but surely, I was able to put a contact in the log, then another,
then another, and it kept going. It WAS slow at first, but after a dozen contacts, the training wheels were slowly starting to lift and stay off the ground. I was able to identify calls and sections the first if not second
time around, and most importantly, I was having fun! Over the weekend in
the late evenings (and some odd morning and mid day qs) I was able to put
130 QSOs in the log. I think my CW ear is vastly better for it too.
I always liked phone contesting because theres an energy and excitement
there, especially when tracking down multipliers. This weekends contest
gave me the same energy behind the beeps and boops. After this experience
Ill definitely pay more attention to the CW contests.

How to get Winlink Express on Windows 10 working with a mobilinkd TNC3 connected to an FT5DR.

    Posted: 05 Dec 2021 02:09 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r9quhc/how_to_get_winlink_express_on_windows_10_working/

I was having trouble finding information on how to get this combination
working and stumbled my way to success. I wanted to share my settings in
hopes that someone finds it helpful.
Ive taken screenshots of most of my settings from the Mobilinkd TNC android app, Windows 10, and Winlink Express.
-On my FT5DR, I turned squelch down all the way and Ive got the frequency
set to the Winlink Gateway nearest me. (I think its called a gateway. For
    me thats W6LFR-10 on 145.050).
-I spent a long time trying to get this to work with the HT just being in
the backyard. It turns out that I could hear the gateway, but it could not
hear me with the HT antenna. Once I switched it to my normal antenna that I
use with my base station (Icom 5100a) which is up about 25 feet, I got this working. When I get a chance and Im out somewhere in the open, Ill give
this a try with my regular HT antenna.
-Also, remember that you can only have one bluetooth connection to the TNC
at a time. Once youve got your settings on the TNC3 set, disconnect your
phone or tablet from it then connect your Windows 10 bluetooth to it.

Antennas... has it all been done?

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 07:29 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rfy14h/antennas_has_it_all_been_done/

So, I recently ordered an antenna analyzer, the iportable ip60z, and Im
looking forward to using it to test an antenna that Im currently in the
    process of building.
Also, Im a CNC machinist, with access to both modern and manual milling machines and lathes, as well as tons of scrap and leftover steel and
aluminum solid round and tubing. We have every type of drill, tap and
cutting tool, too. I can use all this stuff for my own projects, and have
never been turned down when asking for material for my various projects.
So, my question is this: I dont see a lot of "hot off the presses" new
antenna designs when perusing the various online sellers. Ive got ideas for
    a few...
But why is it that there dont seem to be many newly invented antenna
designs? Has it all been done already?
Thanks! (edit: spelling) submitted by /u/VisualEyez33

    Posted: 13 Dec 2021 08:29 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rfz6bp/ic9700_and_linux/

Greetings! Ive got my Icom 9700 and it worked great with Windows (Winlink, WSJT-X, HRD). I decided to switch back over to Linux and Im having some difficulty.
Im trying to get Pat to work so I have Winlink capabilities but Im having issues with rig control using Hamlib. When I try to use rigctld, I get two outcomes depending on how I address the transceiver.
    If I specify a CIV address, like so: rigctld -m 3081 -r /dev/ttyUSB0 -s
    57600 -c A2h
itll key up the radio for a couple seconds, then unkey and give me the following output: rig_open: error = Protocol error icom_rig_open: rig error getting frequency retry=0, err=Protocol error frame.c(439):icom_transaction return(-5) icom.c(752):icom_get_usb_echo_off return(-5) icom.c(752):icom_get_usb_echo_off return(-5)icom.c(1002):icom_rig_open return(-8) rig.c(1028):rig_open return(-8) /dev/ttyUSB0 Success
If I dont specify the CIV address, rigctld -m 3081 -r /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 57600 itll key up the radio and keep it keyed until I ^C, at which point I just
get my prompt, and no output.
Here are the settings from the radio side:
    Menu>Set>Connectors>CI-V: Page 1/3 CI-V Baud Rate - 19200 CI-V Address -
    A2h CI-V Transceive - Off USB/LAN... ->REMOTE Transceive Address 00h Page
    2/3 CI-V USB Port - Unlink from [REMOTE] CI-V USB Baud Rate - 57600 CI-V
USB Echo Back - Off CI-V Data Baud Rate - 9600 Page 3/3 CI-V DATA Echo Back
    - Off
Im certain its me doing something wrong, I just dont know what. Any ideas?

Random rant. Can we please finally have USB-C PD in HTs?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 04:58 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rg6xzf/random_rant_can_we_please_finally_have_usbc_pd_in/

Random rant. Can we please finally have all the HTs lineup design updated
to feature USB-C Power Delivery charging?
Cradle chargers are super useful when keeping radio atop of the desk at
home. DC barrel chargers are kind of universal if we consider DIY buffs
with their home labs full of electronics. But when I travel and consider
taking an HT with me I often decide not to because the need to pack a
separate charger or spare batteries for it.
Think what you always take with you when leaving home for more than a day -
a mobile phone and a charger for it. Unless you have some weird niche or
old device, your mobile phone charger is USB-C and most likely it follows a
PD standard. USB-C charging is a standard nowadays (side note for Apple
users: modern iPhone chargers are USB-C too, they just pack USB-C to
Lightning cable instead C2C used in all other mobile devices). If you
forgot your charger, chances are you can easily borrow one from a random
person not to mention buying one. Good luck finding someone with (or a
place to buy) one of like 10 different sizes barrel connector ended charger that also provides that one exactly required voltage and amperage when you
are on your business conference trip to Vegas or when on vacations in the Caribbean, or wherever.
I can charge my phone, laptop, headphones, even electric toothbrush and
shaver with the same USB-C charger. But not my HT. So I just skip taking
the HT if I need to pack another charger, cradle, special cable or adapter
    only for it.
And no, micro-USB will not do. This connector is being phased out. USB-C everything or GTFO dear Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood./rant submitted by /u/streamofstars

Drop in chargers, that also charge a second battery

    Posted: 14 Dec 2021 02:47 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rg4x68/drop_in_chargers_that_also_charge_a_second_battery/

Back in the 1990s, Motorolas MicroTAC line had charger bases that not only heald the phone, but could hold the battery alone, or a second battery in a second slot. They looked like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/142032148063
I use a 1990s cell phone as my example, cuz while it seems SUPER OBVIOUS to
me, I cant come up with even a SINGLE EXAMPLE outside of that one... I
mean, sure, the era replaceable battery in cell phones is dead now, but for many years, there were replaceable batteries that couldnt be charged
outside of the phone, and the cell phone companies wonder why it wasnt a popular feature...
Which brings me to my point (Yes, I do have one): Ham radios have
batteries. They are still replaceable. We often carry more than one at a
time. For example, an average TH-D74 consumes at least 6 a day... And then
how is one to charge them all overnight?
I pick fun at the TH-D74, but Im actually looking at the AnyTone D878UVII.
It doesnt come with a belt clip, and one gets the belt clip with the extra battery... The extra battery is cheaper than the vinyl case, and cheaper
than a Kenwood belt clip (Sorry... Cant help it... I love my Kenwood, I promise)... So I dont mind... Except... How do I charge the damn thing?
Surely this is a problem that haunts people post-Motorola MicroTAC...
Surely Im not just cray... submitted by /u/KD7TKJ

I was in a ham club several years ago and one of the members worked on
antennas as a professional. He brought a thing he built and showed it to
me. It was a housing (I think copper tubing) with connectors at both ends,
and he had 2 resistors in parallel inside (I think they were 100 ohm). He
used them to simulate coax for testing and setting SWR and adjusting
antenna length. It was a nifty device. Unfortunately he passed and none of
the members remember how he built it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Hightlights of Lamakaan Annual Radio Convention - 4

    Posted: 12 Dec 2021 10:15 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rf8zwb/hightlights_of_lamakaan_annual_radio_convention_4/

The fourth edition of the Lamakaan Annual Radio Convention (LARC-4)
concluded at the Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology
(MJCET). The two-day annual event saw 400 Ham operators (amateur radio operators) from across the country.
Ashhar Farhan, the owner of Lamakaan and co-founder of LARC, shares that
the event will provide an opportunity for the ham operators to showcase
their experimentations with newer radio techniques and wireless
    technologies.
The event also saw the unveiling of sBitx, a very hackable SDR transceiver according to Farhan
“The convention is intended to encourage experimenting and sharing of knowledge associated with radio communication. Experimentation is very important for any field of science to develop. Here several amateur radio operators interact with each other about their work and also attend
workshops to enhance their knowledge in the subject,” he said.
Ashhar Farhan, the owner of Lamakaan and co-founder of LARC, provided a
ground to various ham operators to showcase their amateur experimentations. ICOM India Dealer radiobrewery.com demonstrated the latest ICOM Transceiver
and other equipment at the flea market. Yagi antenna manufacturer – www.hobbytivity.com also demonstrated various 3D printed dual-band yagi antennas during the meet.
“The convention is intended to encourage experimenting and sharing of knowledge associated with radio communication. Experimentation is very important for any field of science to develop. Here several amateur radio operators interact with each other about their work and also attend
workshops to enhance their knowledge in the subject,” Farhan said.
“It took us one year to develop the up-converter,” said Amarendra Prasad, one of the team members who worked on the projects. Explaining about the up-converter, he said, “Normally, one needs to use the Software Defined
Radio (SDR) receiver just to listen to the conversations happening on the satellite or use a transceiver to communicate, which could cost more than a lakh. For the indigenously developed converters, we sourced locally
available 95 cm dish (costing about Rs 1500) and LNB (Rs 150) to receive
QO-100 signals. The real success was in designing the circuit board which
could receive signals from the dish (10 GHz) and convert them into 740 MegaHertz.”
Three renowned radio designers from abroad, Pete Juliano, N6QW and Bill
Meara, N2CQR and Jerry Buxton N0JY also interact virtually with the participants.

Hi all, I am looking to listen to all the ham bands on a Eton Elite 750. I
am looking for some help with an antenna. My thoughts were to run a 50 foot random wire sloper as 100 foot isnt possible / ideal where I live. I was
going to run the antenna with insulators, attach some 50 - 75 ohm insulated coax to the antenna wire and run the ground to a copper ground rod I have
right outside. Then attach the other end of the coax to the 300-500 ohm
bare wire connections in the radio. What are your thoughts on this? I have
my tech class license but have never really messed around with this type of setup as I really only listen these days as I am only just getting back
into the hobby. Any thoughts or suggestions are highly appreciated.

Hi! To minimize the cabling from the shack towards the QO-100 contraption
in the process of being assembled, Im thinking to use one cable for the 10
MHz reference and for the 28 MHz (where the signal is transverted to).
Can you help me understand if its actually possible? Is there a
commercially available duplexer (which I havent been able to find)? I may
think to use 144 MHz as IF and then I think its much easier but Id prefer
    to stick to 28 MHz.

Ok folks, I am both an amateur radio and linux rookie so I could really use
a hand trying to fix an issue I’m running into trying to run this software. I’ve gotten so far as to have N3FJP’s Software for Winter Field Day installed on Linux and apparently working, except for the following error: “Unable To Retrieve Data-
I couldn’t retrieve the requested data in GetDataset. The most likely
causes are that a network error caused this client to become disconnected,
the file path is no longer valid, your permissions are not set to update or
    the database is currently busy.
Please click OK to try again.
The Microsoft jet database engine cannot find the input table or query ‘tblcontacts’. Make sure the it exists and that it’s name is spelled correctly.
    C:\users\TheGreenestWeenie\My Documents\Affirmatech\N3FJP Software\Winter-Field-Day\LogData.mdb”
I’ve tried downloading the “LogData.mbd” file that N3FJP offers as an alternate for Linux windows to no avail.
In general followed these instructions throughout the whole process.
Anyone know a fix for this? submitted by /u/The_Greenest_Weenie

LDG AT-1000PROII Mystery Byass Issue - keeps tuning on 20m

    Hi all,
I own this particular tuner, and keep it connected regardless of mode
operation for convenience. For some reason while operating FT8, only on
20m, the tuner ignores bypass and continues to tune on every single tx. For every other band, it only displays power and SWR as it should. I realized
this may be because of a saved maximum SWR set in the tuners memory to
force an auto tune if exceeding maximum, but even after defaulting the
memory, it still ignores bypass. Thanks in advance for any advice.

    lid
A lid is a poor amateur radio operator; one who grossly does not follow the rules.

New Chinese Amateur Radio Satellite In Orbit

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 12:34 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rqb3ju/new_chinese_amateur_radio_satellite_in_orbit/

China successfully launched Xiwang 3 (XW-3), a CubeSat built by the Chinese Amateur Satellite Group (CAMSAT) on 26th December 03:11 UTC (11:11 Beijing Time). The 6U Cubesat was placed successfully into LEO along with the rocket’s primary payload Ziyuan-1 02E via Chang Zheng 4C rocket.
Xiwang – meaning Hope – is equipped with a small visible-light camera whose images will be downlinked along with telemetry through a GMSK-modulated downlink which will be openly accessible to amateur radio enthusiasts. It
also carries a telemetry beacon, an x-band transponder and a thermoelectric generator – the latter being carried as part of a high school experiment.
The 100 mW linear transponder will have an uplink frequency of 145.870 MHz
and a downlink frequency of 435.18 MHz (transponder passband is 30 kHz, inverted). The satellite also has a CW beacon on 435.575 MHz
Xiwang 3 (XW-3) user manual has more details. https://itshamradio.com/new-chinese-amateur-radio-satellite-in-orbit/

What's the lifespan of a modern radio?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 08:25 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rqjk25/whats_the_lifespan_of_a_modern_radio/

Hello everyone, Im pretty interested in a TECSUN PL-990x. I like it in
every aspect, especially for the Bluetooth and FLAC support. I think that features like these increase the utility of the device: if my favorite
station will be shutdown on shortwaves maybe Ill be able to listen to it on
the radio via Bluetooth via Internet, or if I simply get tired of radio stations, I can listen my favorite music on it or podcast, etc.
The price is a problem. While I think the price is good considering the accessories you get (the antenna is quite useful) I am worried about the lifespan of the device. As you can see on eBay there are a ton of old (even
50 years) perfect functioning radios being sold, and I was thinking how
long my $300 TECSUN will last. Two years? Five or ten or thirty years?
Since $300 is a lot for a radio, I would like to know how it compares to
old radios still functioning in terms of longevity. If some of you is a
long time TECSUN user, please tell me your experiences and opinions.
    Thank you. submitted by /u/Wise_Stick9613

    Different Band Plans to Follow?

I am familiar with the ARRL’s Band Plan, but I believe there are local band plans to follow or something? I’m also confused because 12 meters seem to allow for phone and image, but no where does it mention about it on the ARRL’s Band Plan. I know the Band Plan isn’t the law, but it just seems unusual that they would only include RTTY and Packet as part of their own
band plan guidelines despite the chart being different. submitted by /u/joe_rt

I will wait for the DX station to end a contact before I call.
I will always send my full call sign.
I will call and then listen for a reasonable interval. I will not call continuously.
I will not transmit when the DX operator calls another call sign, not mine.
I will not transmit when the DX operator queries a call sign not like mine.
I will not transmit when the DX station requests geographic areas other

Not including the out of my reach ID-52 or any Yaesu hate here..
I currently have an FT-70D and an Alinco MD5-XT and I like them but would rather just have one HT that has all the good things I want.
I am more interested in Analog and APRS and YSF than DMR. I’ll probably
sell my current handhelds to justify the expenditure.
I wasn’t sure if any new units are due to surface early next year.

RTTY or data emission baud rate at wavelength band 60-meters?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 08:51 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rqk468/rtty_or_data_emission_baud_rate_at_wavelength/

    Studying for the General...
What is the maximum symbol rate permitted for RTTY or data emission
    transmitted at wavelength band 60-meters?
Reviewing ARRL question G1C08 (D) [97.307(f)(3)] What is the maximum symbol rate permitted for RTTY or data emission transmitted at frequencies below
28 MHz (or above 10-meters)? Referred ARRL answer:
97.307(f)(3) Only a RTTY or data emission using a specified digital code
listed in § 97.309(a) of this part may be transmitted. The symbol rate must not exceed 300 bauds, or for frequency-shift keying, the frequency shift between mark and space must not exceed 1 kHz.
After reviewing the table under § 97.305 Authorized emission types, all wavelength bands above 10-meters have a row entry for Emission types
authorized RTTY, data referencing standard 97.307(f)(3). All except for 60-meters which instead references standard 97.307(f)(14) containing no
mention of the maximum symbol rate.
The ARRL answer to question G1C08 (D) implies that the 60-meters maximum
symbol rate is 300 baud, however, the FCC table under § 97.305 Authorized emission types is not as explicit for 60-meters as the others wavelength
bands. FCC should be an authoritative reference and not an ARRL answer to a General Exam Question.

I wanted to get into AR for some time, and now im finally trying to do so.
Im intrested in shortwave radio and ISS stuff, will a typical SW radio be
able to recieve ISS, or do i need something else? sorry if this is a dumb question i know basically nothing about radio lol submitted by /u/Debiuu

UV-5R For Emergency Go-Bag for family?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 02:39 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rqrro8/uv5r_for_emergency_gobag_for_family/

    Hi Guys,
Im new to ham radios and just want to ask a quick question? In an emergency situation (earthquake, flood or zombie attack). Can a UV-5R be a good cheap option for a communication device for a separated family to communicate and find each other in an emergency situation? Cellphones would probably be
useless in a sh*t hits the fan situation?
