Is 80 to 100 watts significant?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 10:34 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r85u44/is_80_to_100_watts_significant/

There is a mod I believe for the Yaesu FT-2980 to upgrade the power levels
from 80 to 100 watts. I was curious if there will be a significant
difference using a mag-mount antenna for my car. submitted by /u/joe_rt

    APRS packet format

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 10:08 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r858ik/aprs_packet_format/

Hello all, I’m working on coding a weather station for a school project,
and i need to transmit temperature data via radio. I’m able to transmit,
but we’re using aprs.fi to validate our transmission.
I have a call sign, coordinates, etc, i just need to know how to build the header so it will be picked up on aprs.fi. Any help on the correct format
or guidance to it would be greatly appreciated submitted by

    How dangerous is RF?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 03:24 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7k9n7/how_dangerous_is_rf/

I’m newly licensed, and want to start off on the 2m/70cm bands. I live on high ground in a 5th floor apartment, so the take off will be excellent.
I’m thinking of purchasing a vertical and rigging a mount to my balcony railing.
I’m only allowed to transmit at 10w, but if I’m sitting ~1.5m from the antenna with a large window between myself and the antenna… will it be safe? Sorry for the stupid question. I know RF EMF can be dangerous, but unsure whether VHF/UHF at 10w is dangerous in this situation. submitted by

Hams that use Raspberry Pi, how do you keep your clock synced?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:17 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7rc9m/hams_that_use_raspberry_pi_how_do_you_keep_your/

On PC it’s as easy as installing Dimension 4 and it syncs with the ntp on
    its own.
Im using a Pi 400 as my shack computer. When using FT8 and WSPR i’m
noticing time differences of 1.5 up to 2.5 regularly. I never used to see
this when I was using my windows laptop.
I know Raspberry Pi has timedatectl built in, and when I check timedate ctl status it shows the NTP is enabled, but obviously something isn’t quite cutting it.
Does anyone know how to keep it in sync or can walk me through it the steps? Edit: after installing ntp and restarting the pi and forcing a sync with ntpdate I’m still getting consistent 2.5 DT on received FT8 signals
EDIT 2: FIXED! I don’t know how or why! So I didn’t mention that Im using GQRX with an SDR as my input. I’ve been using QGRX with a very low sample rate since I only need a narrow spec of spectrum. I raised it back up to default and suddenly my DT went down to fractions! I don’t know why but it did! Ok now I’m going to sleep. submitted by /u/asspirate420

Mag-mount vs window clip for mobile operation...

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:04 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r82f2p/magmount_vs_window_clip_for_mobile_operation/

Does anyone have experience with either or both of these? I just got a
TYT-TH 9800 Plus, not sure which route to go for a mobile vhf/uhf antenna.
The mag-mount seems simple enough, just not too sure about possibly
damaging the paint surface. The MFJ/Nagoya window clip looks like a decent alternative, just looking for some first hand knowledge for either.

Please Help A Noob Setting Up First Antenna

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:54 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7oimn/please_help_a_noob_setting_up_first_antenna/

Sorry, this is going to be long, but Id really appreciate any help anyone
    could give.
Ive recently gotten my Technician license, and have successfully made a few contacts on my Baofeng UV-5R. But its pretty hard for people to hear me,
even though there are a number of repeaters relatively close. Figured Id
best get a real antenna and use it with the Baofeng for a while, then
upgrade to a base station later that could use the same antenna.
After doing some research, I got a Comet GP-3 antenna that I want to set up outside my (rented) house on a multi-unit lot. Since its a rental that
other people have access to on the outside, Id like to mount it up high and
use the fascia board on the edge of the roof to support it, so I dont need
a tower. (It will be in back of the house where nobody really goes, and
theres no HOA, so its OK if the wiring and such doesnt look perfect.)
Ideally Id like to find some way of clamping a relatively short mast
(6-0"?) to that fascia board, rather than screwing into it, and then
clamping the antenna to that using the included u-bolts. So, first
question, does anyone know of a clamp-based mounting solution that I could
use to hold a mast ~30-50 mm diameter and maybe 5 tall to the edge of my
    roof?
Now, Ive also got a nice 50 long coax jumper coming, but the best value (cost:performance) cable I found has N type male connectors on both ends,
while the antenna has an SO-239. The cable is an LMR-400 knockoff that
seems to be well rated and is less than half the cost of real LMR-400. I
also need to get lightning protection into that cable as well. So Im
thinking I need to go antenna -> 2 PL-239/PL-239 jumper (same cable/manufacturer as the 50 line) -> inline SO-239/PL-239 adapter with
ground tap -> SO-239/N female adapter -> 50 N male/N male line -> N female/PL-239 adapter -> SO-239/SMA female adapter -> radio. Is this the correct order of components? Should I maybe convert the SO-239 on the
antenna immediately to N, then purchase the short jumper and the other components with all N connectors? Ive read that I need to form a
mini-inductor by looping the cable ~5 times or so, 6" in diameter, right up near the antenna. Would it be better to put this loop in the short jumper (which would need to get longer) or in the 50 cable? Im assuming that one
does not want the adapter or the grounding tap inside the loop. I really
only need about a 35 cable. What is the best thing to do with the excess? I
am assuming that coiling it = bad. It could just lie on the ground if it
    had to though.
Thanks for any help you can give! submitted by /u/zeroryouko

Whats driving my gas range crazy? RF from the antenna or something feeding
    back on the power line?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:58 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7pts7/whats_driving_my_gas_range_crazy_rf_from_the/

I just put up an 80m EFHW with a 13 foot counterpoise. No ground.
On 85 watts running FT8 my Samsung gas range electronics go nuts. Some
times it gets an error in the screen and has to be unplugged to clear it.
My question is, can the radiation from the antenna, feeders is 30 feet away
and slopes up away from house, can the RF be doing this?
Or is it more likely something getting in the house on my coax and feeding
into the power line to the range?
Thanks for your help. submitted by /u/W9PRA

Do repeaters have spoken-language rules or are the people in my area just racist a-holes?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:14 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7nppw/do_repeaters_have_spokenlanguage_rules_or_are_the/

I live in California where there are a ton of Spanish speakers. I speak
Spanish most of the time and we have a repeater where we typically speak Spanish. However, Ive used other repeaters with other Spanish speakers and usually theres some people that say "English please.". This has happened in multiple other repeaters. We do state our callsign in English. Are there
some language rules that Im missing? submitted by /u/TornadoCondorV2

Listen out for my ZachTek WSPR Desktop transmitter beacon using 200 mW, on
    10m - VK6EEN @ OF78 - temporary installation on a vertical antenna

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:00 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7nflw/listen_out_for_my_zachtek_wspr_desktop/

Working out how to set this up with a more permanent installation,
currently sitting, literally, on my desk, connected to a vertical via an
SG237, tuned externally by my radio. TX on 10m only at the moment.
For antennas, its looking like I might be heading for a Hustler 6-BTV for a more permanent installation.
Still working out how two transmitters can co-exist on the same antenna
without blowing either up. Mind you, Im pretty sure that 200 mW into the front-end of my FT-857d will do no harm, so perhaps a simple TX/RX coax
    switch will do the trick.
Suggestions welcome and thanks to Harry, SM7PNV for getting it to VK so quickly! submitted by /u/vk6flab

FTM-400 (US): Radio scans WX stations when scanning memory

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 06:11 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7nn61/ftm400_us_radio_scans_wx_stations_when_scanning/

Hey folks, got a weird issue that supposedly shouldnt be happening and is
not covered in the manual, been working on solving this for a long time to
    no avail:
    - Radio will scan through my programed frequencies, I have them stored in ascending order based on the receive frequency, but will jump into the pre-programmed WX stations, run through a few, jump back into my Band A memories... jump into the next batch of WX stations.... jump back to Band A memories... ect until it goes through all of them.

    - programmed using RT systems and none of the settings cover this. Any
    ideas? submitted by /u/somebodyelse115
