How to correctly transmit RTTY so it can be decoded by fldigi?
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 04:42 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r76n9c/how_to_correctly_transmit_rtty_so_it_can_be/
I’ve built a very low powered transmitter out of an arduino (range of about 15cm at most).
I’ve coded the logic to transmit some text using RTTY. The carrier shift is 170hz and the baud rate is 45.45 bps.
I transmit a start bit, followed by the 5 ITA2 bits corresponding to the
letter I’m transmitting, followed by a stop bit, for each character in the string. However when I try to decode the same transmission using fldigi I
get garbled output. For example I’ve tried transmitting ‘AAAAA…’ and fldigi
decoded it as ‘LLLLL…’ followed by some random characters. They are the same random characters each time though.
I’ve experimented sending LSB first/last and varying the duration of the
stop bit but this hasn’t helped, is there anything else I should be looking at to see what is going wrong? submitted by /u/Disastrous-Buy-6645

Can a person go to the Russian woodpecker antenna and connect their radio
to it and receive/transmit?

So I heard of the Russian woodpecker which was an OTH(over the horizon)
radar for detecting an American ICBM if it were to be launched against
Russia. The question is if someone were to go there and connect an SDR or portable radio, would they be able to connect it or receive anything, has it been done before?

First Contacts
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 07:42 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7a7hr/first_contacts/
I am a newly licensed Amateur Extra and my Baofeng (gasp) was delivered yesterday. I made my first contacts today on a 70cm repeater. The first was roughly 30 miles away, and the second was in a town roughly 100 miles away (great conditions here today, apparently).
It was awesome, and apparently the community around me is pretty nice. For
all the stories of toxic operators that go around, there are some real gems
out there.
For those interested in the hobby, don’t get discouraged by all the negativity you may read and see (I know it made me question getting into
the hobby). Get licensed, get your toes wet, and jump right in!

Questions regarding delta/quad loop antennae
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:07 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7c19n/questions_regarding_deltaquad_loop_antennae/
Hi, so Im thinking of changing my main HF base antenna and would like a
little advice if anyone can help me.
Currently Im using an off-centre fed dipole that is useable in bands from
40m upwards. I have extremely bad noise problems at my QTH so am looking
for something that performs better in the bad conditions, so Im able to
hear weak signals and hopefully make more contacts.
So Ive decided to go for a loop antenna (either delta or quad) as it seems
that these antennae are much less affected by noise. Im looking at an using
a 40m full wave length, with a 4:1 balun, which should work the
40/20/15/10m bands without an ATU although I have a decent ATU (MFJ993) I
will use. There are a number of limitations imposed by my garden size and
my budget. I have a pole I am going to reuse as a support on one end. My
idea is to probably use a delta loop with a flat top with one end of the
top section attached to a bracket standing off of my house gable end wall,
and the other end attached to the pole I have described. My plan is to make
the flat top the longest length of the loop, obviously it will not be an equilateral triangle with the other two legs sloping diagonally to a point
a very small distance off of the ground. So basically I would like to know
if my proposed arrangement will result in any significant loss of
performance, will the SWR be increased by the arrangement? The other thing
I would like to know is where is the best place to site the feedpoint? Obviously away from the house is generally better from the point of interference, but is there anything I need to consider in particular for
the loop.
Anyway I would be really grateful for any advice anyone can offer me. Many thanks, OJ submitted by /u/Few_Ad7744

Antenna Differences
Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:06 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r7c0m4/antenna_differences/
So, I probably have the most basic of questions, but cant seem to find a
solid answer about it.
Myself and a buddy of mine each have a Motorola XPR7550e radio. My radio
has a 3.5" rigid antenna that has no flex or pliability to it at all. My
buddy has a 6" "whip"-style antenna that is sturdy, but has some
flexibility in it.
Can anyone tell me what the differences between the two antennas are and
what each one provides over the other? Im trying to determine if it would benefit me to have the longer "whip"-style antenna like he has, or if the difference is likely negligible. submitted by /u/SlickRebel231

Best ham radio for first time buyer?
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 08:48 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r6j633/best_ham_radio_for_first_time_buyer/
You probably get this question a lot and I see the usual posts are a lot
more in depth. Live in the U.S. Im 18, got a job and finally have money to
play with. I wanted to get a ham radio and try it out, see how I like it. I essentially want it for safety when going out hiking and honestly just listening. I recently acquired an infatuation with ham radios for an
unfounded reason. I understand of course this is not a toy or something to
mess around with on frequencies. I would need the proper license to
transmit, just wanted to get that out there. Im looking for the best budget radio whatever you think is best for the buck. Maybe $100-$300 possibly
more if need be. submitted by /u/Immediate_Victory990

Digital modes on Yaesu FT-1000D

Greetings!
I just scored an old Yaesu ft-1000D in almost perfect condition for around $600-$700. It will be arriving soon, and I want to be able to use digital
modes as soon as it arrives. What would be required for this? Like what software, hardware, cables, etc…? One note is that my computers run various Linux distros, so software only available for Windows probably won’t work. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/generic-account-7

Hams who use a mixer for audio: What are you using?

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r6hfhm/hams_who_use_a_mixer_for_audio_what_are_you_using/
I dont mean a brand recommendation necessarily but rather how you use it in your setup e.g. channel/bus layout, speaker/headset combinations, powered/unpowered/preamp, etc. I have some audio background from a musical perspective but vocal clarity in that environment is just one part of a
much larger picture so a PreSonus Studio console/DAW controller would be a waste of resources.
For context, I dont have a ham shack, I have a ham shelf: My "biggest"
radio is an Icom 706 mkIIg and I dont really see myself investing thousands
in a boat-anchor nor do I do contesting. submitted by /u/zeno0771

Hey all,
looking at getting a length of cable to suit my Oricom UHF Microphone to
make an extension as ive had to mount the unit a bit too far away in the
car and can see it going through the cable in no time.
Uses a 5 core cable with one of them being screened individually. would
like to find about 3m of this straight (not curly), preferably in
australia, but ill order it in if needed.

How to test HW-8 that came without cables?

EDIT- Thank you so much for the helpful detailed replies! Looking at the
manual (For some reason I thought it will be impossible to find), I might
be able to get the parts necessary myself and try this out.
By the way, looking at the manual- it was crazy how back in the day the manufacturer expected you to electrically assemble everything from scratch, soldering and all! Like an ikea manual except for electronics.
Hello, I ended up buying a bunch of heathkit items from a local garage
sale. I want to make sure the parts power up and function, meaning to make
sure the unit turns on and knobs generate wanted signals. I noticed that looking online the power supply selling for this unit is just a molex
connector and some cables.
Can you guide me on the specific parts to buy in order to attempt on
powering this through my typical outlet (if possible)? I am not familiar
with these tools at all, but know somewhat on how to solder things and
assemble connectors and whatnot.
I would also be interested in notable locations to sell these units aside
from ebay.
Thank you! submitted by /u/iqjump123

Question About 10m Propagation in Poor Conditions
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 06:27 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r6fyk0/question_about_10m_propagation_in_poor_conditions/
Good morning!
So, of course Ive seen the propagation situation for the past several
years, and its still generally pretty bad except in the real low freqs. I
also havent been on HF since around the peak of Solar Cycle 23 when I first
got licensed as a Tech Plus. And back then I just fired up my radio on 10m
and it just "worked."
Now Im wondering, with #25 just underway, what is the typical daytime and nighttime propagation on 10m in North America? Just ground wave? Just comms within X radius?
Im curious if I should bother with pulling the HTX-100 out of the mothballs. Thanks!
EDIT: Just found this:
https://hamuniverse.com/hfbands.html, which
describes the 10m band thusly:
"10 Meters 28.000-29.7000 MHz.
This can be a FUN band, when it is open!
This is the HF band most heavily affected by sunspots and the sunspot cycle
and it can be erratic and exciting at the same time with lots of Dx for the
qsl hunter or just as a fun band. Minimum power and simple antennas can
bring you a hundred countries in a short period of time when the sunspot
cycle is rising towards the peak. Five watts or even less can work half way around the earth!. Ground wave coverage is 25 miles or so. Lots of beacon stations worldwide for you DX hunters. If you can hear beacons that run
very low power on 10 Meters, there is an opening to that part of the world.....keep trying!" submitted by /u/DirtyScoobie

Cans, paddles, and a mic?
Posted: 01 Dec 2021 05:13 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r6egs3/cans_paddles_and_a_mic/
So as a technician whos life has been absolute chaos for the last two years
I finally have some time to start playing around with my radio. I really
want to start with CW and just start listening and practice copying code.
Ive been working on learning Morse via audio on my way to work and Im
decently comfortable with A-M so far. Lol I know, Im a slow learner, ask my wife. But I have no clue where to start as purchasing a set of paddles, I
want to start with paddles so as I get more proficient I have the ability
to key faster. Rather than start with a straight key then have to learn
paddles as I get faster.
So Im just looking for suggestions for a set of paddles, a decent set of
cans, and something other than the mic that came with my radio.
And any advice on CW is more than welcome.
Thanks all. submitted by /u/MaddogMike80

Question about QPSK modulation

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r682ay/question_about_qpsk_modulation/
Hi all
My Question about QPSK modulation.
i know the QPSK modulation is only change carrier phase. and when we have
high symbol rate this changes in symbol make the signal have large
bandwidth. So i wonder at a given time if Im "freeze" the RF spectrum, did
i see only one spike "carrier", or also i see full bandwidth ?
another Question, at run time, did the information signal spread over full bandwidth or just occupies in the middle of the bandwidth "carrier
signal" submitted by /u/moemuses
