THE AWA VALVE SSB QSO PARTY THIS AFTERNOON

The AWA Valve QSO Party is a phone only contest on 40 and 80 metres using
AM and SSB. Preferably valve radios or radios with valves in them should
be used. No linear amplifiers may be used. The SSB Valve QSO Party runs f
rom 13:00 to 17:00 UTC (15:00 to 19:00 CAT) this afternoon. The exchange i
s your call sign, a realistic RS report, a consecutive serial number s
tarting at 001 and the type of radio used. Your log sheets must be submitt
ed by Friday 8 October 2021 to andyzs6ady@vodamail.co.za (mailto:andyzs6ad y@vodamail.co.za) . Get the rules on page 100 of the 2021 Blue Book.

ZS18MOTH WILL BE ACTIVE FOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

The special call sign ZS18MOTH will be active from the Southern Cape durin
g November to commemorate Remembrance Day on 11 November. More detail will
be made available later.

IARU NEWS: HF BAND PLAN REVIEW

The following was posted to the IARU Region 1 website by Tom Kamp, DF5JL
the chairman of the Region 1 Permanent HF Committee. "Over the pa
st 18 months, a proposal for an IARU HF Digital Mode reorganization has
been undertaken by representatives of all three IARU Regions. The objecti
ves were to review the data modes usage of the Amateur Radio HF spectrum a
nd propose changes that:

* reduce inter-mode conflict between dissimilar operating modes; and
* facilitate the expansion of new technologies.

In conducting the review, it was realized that it was necessary to updat
e the manner in which the IARU creates its band plans. Accordingly, the
IARU's band planning definition toolkit was redefined, addition
al data mode definition characteristics have been added to help separate a ctivities that are fundamentally incompatible within the data mode family.

With the band planning process updated, the proposal then revised the ba
nd plans of all three IARU Regions, focusing on the data sub-bands and t
aking into consideration:
* popularity and capacity requirements; and
* existing band users and inter-mode compatibility assessments.

The team also harmonized the band plans of all three IARU Regions to the g reatest extent possible, of course. The proposal is now being discussed
in the relevant committees."

The second leg of the SARL 80 meter QSO Party is on the air from 17:00 to
20:00 UTC (19:00 to 22:00 CAT) on Thursday 7 October. The exchange is you
r call sign, a realistic RS signal report and your name. You score 10 po
ints for a QSO with a South African station and 15 points for a QSO with a
station outside South Africa. Submit your log sheet in MS Excel ONLY by 2

The Spring QRP contest will be run from 12:00 to 13:30 UTC (14:00 to 15:30
CAT) on Saturday 9 October with CW and phone activity using 5 Watts or le
ss. The first 45 minutes are limited to the 40 m band only, the remainin
g 45 minutes the contesters are free to use any HF (non-WARC) band as they
see fit. The exchange is a realistic RS or RST report and your Grid Locat

THE AO-92 AND FALCONSAT-3 SATELLITES HAVE BEEN SHUT DOWN

AO-92 (Fox-1D) had started to change its behaviour after several weeks of
being powered on. In particular, the integrated housekeeping unit (IHU)
switched to safe mode. This was likely due to low voltage during eclipse
, which is when it should draw very little power, if no one uses it. M
ark Hammond, N8MH, also reported that he was turning off FalconSAT-3
's transmitter, due to low voltage. Thanks to the AMSAT News Ser

THE IARU REGION 1 MONITORING SYSTEM FINDS RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONAL SPLAT
TER "UNTENABLE."

The International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 Monitoring System (IARUMS)
August newsletter reports that Radio France International was active dail
y between 21:00 and 22:00 UTC on 7 205 kHz. The report says splattering ap peared "massively" down to 7 186 kHz, which IARUMS calle
d "an untenable condition." IARUMS said that the "
especially well-known intruders" included Voice of Broad Masses (V
OBM) on 7 140 and 7 180 kHz from Eritrea. "From time to time, Ch
ina Radio International was heard on 14 000 kHz (and intermodulation of 13
855 kHz and 13 710 kHz)." The usual players among the over-the-ho
rizon radar (OTH-R) systems also were active almost daily. Intruding signa
ls heard in IARU Region 1 may cause problems elsewhere in the world.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that solar activity is expected to be
at low-to-moderate levels. There are currently several active sunspot reg
ions visible and some minor C-class flaring activity is possible. If you w
ant to do your own frequency predictions, the expected effective sunspot
number for the week will be around 25. The 10 to 30 m bands will during t
he late afternoons, provide some good DX fun. For more information, pl

IARU NUUS: HF BANDPLAN OORSIG

Die volgende is op die IARU Streek 1 webwerf geplaas deur Tom Kamp, DF5J
L, die Voorsitter van die Streek 1 Permanente HF Komitee. "Die afgelope
18 maande is 'n voorstel vir 'n IARU HF Digitale Modus herorganisasie deu
r verteenwoordigers van al drie IARU Streke aangeneem. Die doelwitte was o
m die gebruik van data modusse van die Amateur Radio HF spektrum te hersie
n en veranderings voor te stel wat:
* intermodus konflik verminder tussen verskillende modusse; en
* die uitbreiding van nuwe tegnologieë vergemaklik.

By die hersiening is besef dat dit nodig is om die manier waarop die IARU
sy band planne opstel, by te werk. Gevolglik is die gereedskapkas van d
ie band beplanning definisie van die IARU herdefinieer; bykomende kenmerke
vir die definisie van die data modus is bygevoeg om verskillende aktiwite
ite te help wat fundamenteel onversoenbaar is in die data modus familie.

Met die opdatering van die band beplanningsproses, hersien die voorstel
dan die band planne van al drie IARU Streke, met die klem op die data-s ubbande en met inagneming van:
* vereistes vir gewildheid en kapasiteit; en
* bestaande band gebruikers en intermodus-verenigbaarheid beoordelings.
Die span het ook van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak om die band planne van
al drie IARU Streke natuurlik te harmoniseer. Die voorstel word nou in di
e betrokke komitees bespreek."

DIE AO-92 EN FALCONSAT-3 SATELLIETE IS AFGESKAKEL

AO-92 (Fox-1D) het sy gedrag begin verander na 'n paar weke se aanskakel.
Die geïntegreerde huishoudings-eenheid (IHU) het veral oorgeskakel n
a die veilige modus. Dit was waarskynlik te wyte aan lae spanning tydens v erduistering en dit is dan wanneer dit baie min krag moet trek as niemand
dit gebruik nie. Mark Hammond, N8MH, het ook berig dat hy FalconSAT-3

DIE IARU -STREEK 1 MONITERINGSTELSEL VIND RADIO FRANKRYK INTERNASIONAAL SE
SPAT ONHOUBAAR

Die Augustus nuusbrief van die Internasionale Amateur Radio Unie Streek 1
Monitering Stelsel (IARUMS) berig dat Radio Frankryk internasionaal daagl
iks tussen 21:00 en 22:00 UTC op 7 205 kHz aktief was. Die verslag sê
dat die spat 'massief' tot 7 186 kHz verskyn, wat volgens IARUMS 'â
" 'n onhoudbare toestand" is. IARUMS het gesê dat die
â-˜veral bekende indringers' Voice of Broad Masses (VOBM) o
p 7 140 en 7 180 kHz vanaf Eritrea insluit. "Af en toe is Sjina Ra
dio Internasionaal gehoor op 14 000 kHz (en intermodulasie van 13 855 kHz

on (OTH-R) stelsels was ook byna daagliks aktief. Indringende seine wat in
IARU Streek 1 gehoor word, kan elders in die wêreld probleme veroo
rsaak.

HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak laag
tot gematig gaan wees. Tans is daar verskeie sonvlekgroepe sigbaar en daa
r is 'n moontlikheid van geringe C-klas sonfakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie
frekwensievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektel
