We begin this bulletin with the news of silent keys.

It is with deep regret that we announce that the keys of Klaus Knopf ZS1QO
; Menno Havelaar ZS6AGC; Gary Sam, ZS6GS, and Sarie Greyling, ZS4SG
have gone silent.

Klaus passed away on Friday 9 December 2022 after a long illness. He was a
member of the CTARC and will be remembered for his service to amateur rad
io and more specifically for the well-known "Klaus Mast" w
hich he imported and distributed to many ZS amateurs. We extend our sincer
e condolences to his daughter Martine, family, and friends.

Menno passed away on Saturday 10 December 2022 from a heart attack. He was
a member of the Pretoria ARC and was well known for his contributions and
involvement with motor rallies as navigator and radio marshall in Car Zer
o. We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Sandy, ZS6ICE, family
, and friends.

Gary passed away on Monday 12 December 2022. He went into the ICU in Saudi
Arabia, where he was working, on 2 November where he suffered a heart
attack and passed away in the ICU. Gary, a member of the Sandton ARC,
wrote his RAE in May 2019. We extend our condolences to his wife Jenny,
sisters Carol and Linda, family, and friends.

Sarie passed away on Wednesday 14 December. She was, for many years, t
he secretary of the Bloemfontein Branch of the SARL. We extend our sincere
condolences to her husband Hennie, ZS4HG, family, and friends.

THE 2023 SARL CONTEST MANUAL IS READY FOR DOWNLOAD

The 2023 SARL Contest Manual (or Blue Book) has been uploaded to the Leagu
e website. You can download a copy by clicking on the link on the front pa
ge. The Contest Working Group wishes to remind contest sponsors that it is
their duty to ensure that the Log files required by them are up to date a
nd available from the League's website. Please send your files for

THE SAMOC STRAIGHT KEY NIGHT ON 1 JANUARY

The SAMOC Straight Key Night is held every 1 January from 00:00 to 23:59 U
TC. This 24-hour event is not a contest; rather, it is a day dedicated t
o celebrating our CW heritage. Participants are encouraged to get on the a
ir and simply make enjoyable conversational CW QSOs. Using straight keys o
r bugs to send CW is preferred. Votes for â-˜Best Fist' and
"Most Interesting QSO" will be tabulated and included in
the results.

PROPAGATION REPORT

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, reports that the solar activity is expected to
be at low levels. There are currently multiple sunspots with simple to co mplex magnetic configurations visible. There is a high probability for bot
h C- and M-class solar flares. If you want to do your own frequency predic tions, the expected effective sunspot number for the week will be around
79. The 15 to 30 m bands will provide some good DX fun, especially late

Sorry, no graphics this week!
I am on holiday at the mouth of the Great Fish River and all the mobiles p hones here indicate "No Service" for Vodacom and Cell C. So I load my lapt
op and mobile router into the car and drive 1,5 km up the road and have
a 4G signal from the tower at the Fish River Sun complex. The problem (wh
ich started 2 months ago) was reported to Vodacom on Thursday and they pro vided me with a call number. When I enquire on the status, I am told "pl
ease give more time!" So I am sitting in my car with the laptops on my kne
es receiving and sending e-mails, uploading the Contest Manual and SARL
Bulletins, etc., while Vodacom's team needs more time to either find
out where I am or try to figure out what to do!

voer het en aan by ZS amateurs verkoop het. Ons betuig ons innige meegevoe
l aan sy dogter Martine, familie en vriende.

Menno is op Saterdag 10 Desember 2022 oorlede na â-˜n hartaanval. Hy
was â-˜n lid van die Pretoria ARK en was alombekend vir sy bydraes
en betrokkenheid met motor tydrenne en het in Kar Zero opgetree as naviga
tor and radio beampte. Ons betuig ons innige meegevoel aan sy vrou Sandy
, ZS6ICE, familie en vriende.

Gary is op Maandag 12 Desember 2022 oorlede. Hy is na die ICU in Saudi Ara bië, waar hy gewerk het, op 2 November waar hy â-˜n hartaan
val gehad het en in die ICU oorlede is. Gary, â-˜n lid van die San
dton ARK het die RAE in Mei 2019 geskryf. Ons betuig ons innige meegevoel
aan sy vrou Jenny, susters Carol and Linda, familie and vriende.

Sarie is op Woensdag 14 Desember 2022 oorlede. Sy was vir baie jare die Se kretaresse van die Bloemfontein Tak van die SARL Ons betuig ons innige mee gevoel aan haar man Hennie, ZS4HG, familie en vriende.

Die SAMOK "Straight Key Night" word elke 1 Januarie vanaf 00:00 tot 23:59
UTC gehou. Hierdie 24-uur byeenkoms is nie 'n kompetisie nie; dit is eerd
er 'n dag wat toegewy is aan die viering van ons GG-erfenis. Deelnemers wo
rd aangemoedig om op die lug te kom en bloot aangename, gesels Gelyk-Gol
f QSO's te maak. Die gebruik van reguit sleutels of "Bugs" om GG te stuur
, word verkies. Stemme vir 'Beste vuis' en "Interessantste QSO" sal geta
buleer en by die resultate ingesluit word.

HF VOORTPLANTINGSVOORSPELLING

Hannes Coetzee, ZS6BZP, berig dat die verwagte sonaktiwiteitsvlak laag
gaan wees. Tans is daar veelvuldige sonvlekke met eenvoudige tot gevorder
de magnetiese samestellings sigbaar. Daar is 'n hoë waarskynlikheid v
ir die voorkoms van C-klas en M-klas fakkels. Diegene wat hulle eie frekwe nsievoorspellings wil doen, kan 'n verwagte effektiewe sonvlektelling va
n 79 vir die week gebruik. Radio amateurs kan veral laatmiddag goeie DX op eninge op die 15 tot 30 m bande verwag. Besoek gerus die webtuiste spacewe ather.sansa.org.za vir meer inligting.
