This past weekend I threw together another one-transistor 40-meter CW transmitter called a "Michigan Mighty Mite".
This is a fun little QRPp transmitter that you can build in an hour.
Tonight I will throw together a LPF and add it to the circuit, remove the
two resistor dummy load and put this little baby on the air.
If anyone else is interested in building one I have a bunch of 80-meter crystals, Ill mail you one for free! submitted by /u/KA8VIT

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 05:53 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tvoy29/have_to_wonderare_ppl_nuts/

Ive been looking for a reasonable deal on a used yaesu FT-60R. Been
scouring CL and Ebay for probably 6 months. 98% of the ebay listings are
for used, working radios with various addons. The really weird thing is
that in almost all cases (like 99%), standard configuration used (in some
cases well used) radios (stock antenna, battery, charger) are sold for
*more* than a new one from reputable suppliers. This is insane. Am I
missing something or are ppl just nuts? submitted by

Newb question. My noise floor is better when I disconnect shielding from
back of radio. Is this indicative common mode interference?

    Posted: 04 Apr 2022 05:30 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tw0u6x/newb_question_my_noise_floor_is_better_when_i/

If I just stick the center connecter in, Im getting about S2 noise. When I screw the shielding connecter on, the noise goes up to about an s7 and has
a hum/buzz. Is this common mode noise, or possibly something else? Ive
already ran the radio on a battery and disconnected the main breaker trying
to eliminate the noise, but to no avail. submitted by

Mac users who use a Windows VM for Ham Radio software...

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 03:24 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tvlsjk/mac_users_who_use_a_windows_vm_for_ham_radio/

I was struggling with my M1 Mac upgrade because I previously had an Intel Macbook Pro that ran a Windows 10 virtual machine under VMWare Fusion that
I used for the various ham radio software that is only available on
Windows: Anytone CPS, Yaesu firmware updater, etc. For those unaware, M1
Macs can no longer run Windows virtual machines.
I found a kickass solution. I found that VMWare Fusion Pro for Mac will let
you share USB devices over a network to a remote ESXi virtual machine.
ESXi is the "lightweight operating system meant to only run virtual
    machines*. Its free.
Basically.. you can build yourself a small headless ESXi server (out of any
old computer intel Mac Mini, Intel NUC, etc). I was able to copy my Windows
10 VM over to it, and after running a disk conversion program that comes
with ESXi, launch it on the headless server.
Now, I can plug my Yaesu radio into my Mac, launch Fusion and connect to
the Windows virtual machine over a network, tell it to pass the USB device through, and voila. I just updated the firmware on my FT5DR from my M1 by connecting to a windows VM over my home network! submitted by

    A Handheld SDR?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 11:07 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tvux65/a_handheld_sdr/

Okay so this may be something that doesn’t exist or I may be asking for too much in one package, but I am looking for a handheld (More portable and
battery powered) version of an SDR. I have been teaching myself radio
receiving basics with a RTL-SDR and an antenna hanging by my window for a
few months now and would love to have a more portable version available for when I’m not home. Yes, I know I could set up a Raspberry Pi and go that route but if I could have something the size of a handheld radio and less
    work I would be happiest.
Please forgive me if I am either asking too much or for something that just simply doesn’t exist. I have been teaching myself this stuff so I really
have no idea what’s out there.
Edit: I am not looking to transmit at all. At this point in my learning I
am more interested in just receiving signal and learning about it and how
to receive it. I know I won’t be able to decode digital modes with the
device I’m asking about and I’m okay with that as well. submitted by /u/LinuxIsBest

What kind of ARRL practice test score/pass rate should you shoot for before taking Technician license test?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 08:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tvsdbw/what_kind_of_arrl_practice_test_scorepass_rate/

Hello. I hope to be joining your ranks soon with a technician license. My
DMR will be here tomorrow so Im incentivized to pass quickly.
I have an electronics/rf/engineering background although Ive never studied
for ham/fcc licensing before. Im scoring around 75% on the ARRL practice
tests, but some of the questions about esoteric stuff like what makes one category connector or cable better than the other, makes me wonder if I
need to rote memorize a bunch of things. Or if I can wing it.

Pi-Star w/STM32-DVM/MMDVM_HS - Cannot unlink TG while Receiving from Net

    Pi-Star 4.1.6
    Mode: Duplex Repeater
MMWVM Fw: HS_Hat :v1.5.2 (reflashed with hs_dual_hat to make sure)
I can Tx/Rx without issue with both DMR and DStar, w/0.0% BER. I was under
the impression from another post c.2019 that a benefit of a dual hat was
that I could disconnect/unlink while receiving. While receiving DMR, I can transmit on the DMR radio to TG4000, and while the dashboard shows it is receiving me, and it displays my call to 4000 target in the GW activity,
but does not disconnect. If I can catch some idle time between others
    talking the disconnect works properly.
Also, while receiving DMR audio, trying to unlink DStar via the other
radio, the dashboard doesnt show it is receiving at all. Can still
unlink/link when the TG/REF are idle. submitted by /u/jvhutchisonjr

Couple of questions about UHF connectors

    Posted: 03 Apr 2022 04:11 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tvmu8v/couple_of_questions_about_uhf_connectors/

Im very close to setting up my first shack and I have a question about feed lines. I am setting up a Yaesu FT-7900. I will be using a Diamond SG7500 antenna with it. It has an NMO fitting, so I got the appropriate cable
which is small, RG-316 with an SMA fitting on the far end. It came with an
SMA to PL-259 adapter. the feed line is 16 feet long.
Clearly, this is made for automotive use, but I am using this for this
radio at my home for now. Here is my problem. The feed line is only 16 feet long. I need to make it longer to make it to the place where I am going to
come into the room I am using as my shack. Therefore, I need about 20 feet
of additional feed line so I am going with RG8x.
I cannot use pre-assembled stuff because I dont think I can get a UHF
fitting through the wall. I have never assembled Coax before, but I am not overly concerned about it as long as I get the right fittings.
This leads me to 2 questions.
First, Is the size difference between RG58 and RG8X negligible enough that
you can use the same crimp fittings, or do I need to look for some
    specifically for RG8X?
Second, should I make the feed line with male at either end and join it to
the antenna feed line with a female/female adapter or should I make it
female at one end and just attach them? What is best-practices for this? I
feel like most cables I have used around the house are made male at both
ends, but not sure about HAM. submitted by /u/NedTaggart

Im going to be mounting an HF6V on the flat roof of my 2 story building. We have a cupula up there, and my plan is to mount a 10 long, 1 1/2" steel
pole to the side of the cupola, and attach the antenna to the top of the
steel pole. I know Ill need to run radials, but do they need to be a
certain length and gauge? Can I just lay them out on the roof under the
antenna or do they have to be in the same plane as the bottom of the
antenna (in other words, they would be elevated above the roof). Can I get
    by with this cheap wire?
Yes, I know there are a lot of things Im not considering. Ive been out of
