For the new hams

Trust your elmers. Youll hear that from the day you express interest in
amateur radio, and for good reason. Theyve been in the hobby a long time
and know what theyre doing. They can also give you some tricks to
troubleshoot your radio.
Case in point: I was off the air for about seven months until today because
I thought my radio bit the dust. Since its the first nice day weve had in a while, I decided to go outside and see if maybe my luck had changed. I
plugged in, keyed up, and got an audio report from another ham on simplex!
A little troubleshooting later and it turns out the problem was a loose connection on the mic. Sometimes its the simplest stuff you dont think
about that the elmers do.
Trust your elmers, folks. Theyre called elmers for a reason.

PSKReporter down
Posted: 17 Mar 2022 08:42 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tgd3qa/pskreporter_down/
PSK reporter , the digital mode propagation reporter used widely in
FT8/FT4, is having database issues. More here:
https://groups.google.com/g/psk-reporter/c/02EZ2W7g_r4
* The main disk of the server ran out of free disk at some point. The
database (maria 10) detected this and was, I think, reasonably happy, but
it just wouldnt update any data,
* Early today UTC, two events happen: First a new partition is added to
the report table (this is the big table with one row per reported spot).
This failed (no space). But it appears to have taken 6 hours to figure that
out based on timestamps. Normally, this is essentially instantaneous.
* Then a second script files up (5 minutes after the first one starts)
that dumps all data in the report table into a file, and then sends that
file to s3 for archiving. Those partitions are then dropped. The partition
drop is normally quick. However, today, the dump failed and it certainly
didnt drop any partitions.
* The database is not currently executing any queries.
[...]
However, I really dont want to make this worse. by doing the wrong things
(or even the right things in the wrong order).
I really would appreciate a mysql expert help me with validating this
approach. Please contact me directly. submitted by /u/CarneTacos

Low Profile Transit Antenna (Railroad Anvil Antenna) Characteristics
Posted: 17 Mar 2022 10:52 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tgfz1g/low_profile_transit_antenna_railroad_anvil/
Asking here for the wider audience: something Ive wondered more recently is
the electrical characteristics and patterns of those "low profile" transit antennas used on trains and buses for height clearance.
I cant find any information on them other than basic cut sheets for sales teams, so if anyone has any thoughts/ideas...
Example of an anvil antenna:

Example of a blade antenna (which I wouldnt be surprised is the same electro-mechanical format in PCB form):

Relay Selection Criteria

Im thinking of making a remote coax switching unit. One input and several outputs. How do I determine what are appropriate relays to use? If they
only had to handle DC, then its straight forward. However RF complicates things. I intend to go from 160 - 10m with 100W, but would like the option
of adding more power later, so would prefer to over specify on the power
side.

Tell me about Polystealth antenna wire.
Posted: 16 Mar 2022 08:50 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tg18wj/tell_me_about_polystealth_antenna_wire/
So I met up with a friend who was operating QRP at a park sort of in
between our houses and learned that the wire hed thrown up in a tree was
called Polystealth. It was basically invisible and before I arrived,
somebody had walked into it while he was still setting up. It got me
thinking that I could set up a much longer wire dipole at home if I used
this type of wire and nobody would even notice in my neighborhood. There
have been no complaints thus far.
Anyway, what I am still unsure of is what gauge of wire I should use, and
if this wire is sufficient to handle 100 watts and what any (if any)
drawbacks using it might have. I am somewhat uneducated I guess you could
say when it comes to proper classifications might be necessary when it
comes to using wire for antennas. Maybe I have misconceived with reference
to "QRP antennas". Does that mean the antenna should only be used at QRP
power level? Does it mean this antenna works good, even if youre only
pushing 5 watts? Does that imply that it is more efficient than a half-wavelength antenna of heavier gauge wire?
Perhaps I shall open the ol antenna book and see what it sayeth.

Questions about antennas and feed control.
Posted: 17 Mar 2022 02:11 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tg5zz9/questions_about_antennas_and_feed_control/
Full disclosure, im not yet licensed. Listening RX to help learn and find enjoyment in the hobby to drive getting licensed.Im still very much early
into learning about this hobby and while i have some hobby electronics experience its not very in-depth. Learning by practical application, i have trouble following most of the guides and general information available on
the internet.
Hello r/amatuerradio community!
First, my situation/setup:Im in a bit of a pickle with lots of local RFI
from nearby industrial equipment and several cell towers (S6-8 noise floor
in some bands)Im lucky if i can get S3 out of my local repeater on mobile handheld (the much loved and hated baofeng) in my back yard with the few deadzones that cut through the noise.Alongside my few handhelds i acquired
for licensing (with the intention of using them for POTA/SOTA in the
future), I have a plethora of SDRs, which i use on a more dedicated
basis.Being a Australian, we have roof mounted VHF/UHF yagi (Tuned for FM-Broadcast/DVB-T/DAB), which just so happens to be pointed directly at
said repeater (3km away...). Downside is 50hz line hum, which i stubbornly cannot diagnose. - However, they provide a adequate S5-7, unlike the
mobiles depending on feed line loss.
--
That taken care of, on to my actual question.
Is it possible to use a single-feed, with multi-yagis (cardinal-directions)
for RX and a single dipole for TX?I am assuming you would need pre-amps on
the RX side to overcome the loss due to impedance, but how do you limit the RX/TX flow to ensure the pre-amps dont get destroyed during TX, and to
limit TX flow to the dipole?
I know in hobby electronics, you can restrict current direction with a cap, diode and resistor. But is there schematics for feed control boxes or something?
Sorry if this post is all over the place, thank you for your patience. submitted by /u/EndlessEden2015

Best Bang for My Buck Baofeng Replacement HT?
Posted: 16 Mar 2022 09:08 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tfljr7/best_bang_for_my_buck_baofeng_replacement_ht/
I have a pair of Baofengs they worked for getting me into the hobby and all
but they have a number of problems that are just really annoying. Any
nearby low level QRM source can cause them to shut down. This includes
fairly minimal sources such as sitting at a desk with a computer monitor.
Heck, even the QRN from a man holding a relatively high static electric
charge can shut down the HT. Also, the antenna connector seems iffy; even a well secured SMA adapter seems to result in RF dropouts. The "fix" is to
put my thumb on the base of the antenna for a moment, even though the SMA adapter is as tight as it can be.
So, at this point Im in the market for a good Baofeng replacement. CHIRP software support would be nice, but isnt mandatory. It would be even better
if a prospective replacement was easy to program from a Linux terminal
window. Ideally, Id like to spend no more than about 200-250 bucks on my replacement HT.
My use case is simple: talk to local repeaters on 2m/70cm. The ability to shoe-horn data connectivity with a Mobilinkd TNC would be nice too, but I
can live without it for a while longer if I must. Serious bonus points of
there is a headset jack for the HT though. Ive had moderate hearing
impairment my entire life and it would be a lot easier to copy NTS messages
if I could use a proper headset. submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa
