    Passed my extra exam!

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 06:05 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sc27z4/passed_my_extra_exam/

Hey everyone! Just wanted to be able to tell someone that I passed my extra exam today! I used a combination of hamstudy, ham radio prep, and HamTestOnline. They all helped in their own ways but I think for actually reviewing the material I personally found HamTestOnline to be the most
helpful. I passed my general back in 2018 but still havent managed to set
up my own HF station yet as Ive always lived in an apartment. I guess its finally time to get a move on! submitted by /u/DomCollins

    Am I an alligator?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 08:46 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sbqg7o/am_i_an_alligator/

I heard that alligators are all mouth and no ears. Ive got people picking
up my signal, but I cant receive theirs.
(Preface: If youre getting a laugh out of my setup, my questions, or my incompetence--- then please show your appreciation with either an upvote or
a helpful comment. I learn quick, but I cant learn if people are being
snobs and downvoting me to non-existence. I usually try to reward ppl with medals for their help and patience for reading my posts and offering their wisdom)
    Ok-- Admittedly---Im using 45 ft of RG174
...going from a 4W handheld radio to a roll-up JPOLE antenna mounted 15 ft
    in the air.
Also, I attempted to run a significant portion of my coax through thin PVC pipe, which I tape-foiled (imagine RG174 in a small PVC pipe that was then wrapped with aluminum foil tape and then again wrapped in electrical tape,
sort of like a coax) idk if it helps but i did it.
Could I attach an amplifier to the base of the antenna to mitigate the
issue of s****y coax, or should I just wait for my LMR400 coax to finally arrive?
    Would the LMR400 even help?
What is your impression of the setup I described?
Thank you all for your time. submitted by /u/truthfulinternet

I used hamstudy.org until I knew the answer to every question. I finished
an online proctored exam in about 5 minutes and got a 35 out of 35! Well
worth the studying. If I can do it you can too! Im just waiting for my call sign to appear in the database now and placed an order for a Yaesu FT-991A,
    a multi-band antenna, etc. as a reward.
I think I am going to work on the general next as they told me its pretty
much the exact same material. I am hoping the question pool isnt too much larger than the technician though. Anyone know how much harder the general
or even the extra will be? submitted by /u/TagWolf

    The ham radio elevator pitch

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:18 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sbvelo/the_ham_radio_elevator_pitch/

I am excited to teach a Tech license workshop later this week at the
University of South Florida, where Im a senior electrical engineering
student. Im hoping to help mint some brand new hams in time for Orlando Hamcation.
I have a meaty PowerPoint going over some background and the Tech study material. USF has a good RF program and a decent number of students seem interested in getting licensed, but some have expressed doubt that its
worth their time to study and take an exam.
How would you respond to that doubt? Why is a ham ticket valuable to a
    future EE?

    Hi everyone,
    new ham here tinkering around.

Ill be making a yagi pretty soon for satellite work but I also happen to
have a bunch of heavy gauge speaker wire hanging around.
Is there anything cool I can make for a VHF/UHF HT with thick speaker
wire?(I already have a jumper and BNC splitter for attaching it to
    something)
Cant find any designs so far, the closest is big random wire stuff for HF submitted by /u/VA4KAV

    DMR in Amateur Capacity

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 07:16 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sboggl/dmr_in_amateur_capacity/

Hey folks...got a few questions about using DMR in an amateur capacity, specifically in regard to timeslots.
Im trying to understand and be considerate of repeater use. So heres my confusion:
On my local DMR repeater, TS1 is statically linked to a specific timeslot,
so anything I program in my HT Im setting for TS2. So far so good. BUT- if
I key up and associate TS2 for a talkgroup, that means that any other users
on the repeater can not specify their own talkgroup for TS2 right? Everyone
is stuck using the same TG on that TS until I issue a disconnect, or, it
imtes out and unlinks that TG?
Initiating a private call to another DMR ID. Myself and another ham have
tested this and found that when we issue a call from our HT to one another directly (but through the repeater...not simplex) somehow the
repeater "finds" us and "rings" our radio even if we havent keyed up on the repeater in over a day. How does his radio know a call is meant for him if
he hasnt "keyed up" on the repeater? Now, he is parked on the repeater
channel in his HT but he hasnt keyed into any talkgroups.
Thanks for the help! Ive done some digging and reading but cant get a clear answer on these two things. submitted by /u/Cthulu2020NLM

recently. Im just amazed at the list of features it has... it comes with a
21 page manual. Ive also corresponded with the guy who sells them, and hes really responsive. So I figured Id share with you folks. As has been said before, we need to support people in the ham community selling good

Safely grounding my station near the natural gas inlet to my house

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 04:59 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sbloi7/safely_grounding_my_station_near_the_natural_gas/

My shack is on the second floor of my house, next to a window overlooking
my backyard. Im using a window pass-thru panel (a wooden board with barrel connectors passing through it sitting in the window in a similar manner to
a window air-conditioner unit). The window is directly adjacent to the
chimney, and the ground directly below the window is concrete. The nearest exposed soil is about 4 feet to one side (opposite the chimney), but thats
also where the natural gas line enters the house. On the other side of the
gas inlet opposite the concrete patio is the air conditioner.
Assuming I could locate the ground rod arbitrarily close to the gas inlet
(real big IF here), the ground wire would go down about 12 feet, and over
about 4 feet. Im not sure whether the main gas pipe is coming from. Are
there safety concerns here besides puncturing the gas pipe with the ground
    rod? submitted by /u/Altie-McAltface

I am trying to find out the current draw of the ICOM 7100 at different
power levels. There are plenty of reports of current draw for RX only and
full power tx. But I am wondering what the measured current draw is at 1/5/10/20 watts when transmitting HF. I am mainly interested if it is
similar to or lower than the FT-891. submitted by /u/ebenwandering

Im looking for some advise on setting up an IC-705 with Pinpoint APRS on
win10. Im not sure if I have bad propagation in my area (Im in between buildings) or its a setup issue.
Im receiving packets fine on the TNC but something is up when sending - the signal on the waterfall doesnt look anything like the packets received, so
I assume the fault lies with either the radio or Soundmodem setup?
In the image you see the incoming APRS packet in the bottom. The upper is
what Im sending out using 5W.

I have a btech uv-5x3 that I use to listen to my local ems channels, but
have never used it for talking. Im considering registering it and having my friends get themselves a handheld for when we are off-road/camping but want
to make sure that ham radios are a good/legal option for such use.

Questions about "Sputnik" 40 regenerative receiver

    Posted: 24 Jan 2022 11:42 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sbuk3n/questions_about_sputnik_40_regenerative_receiver/

Hey guys, Ive been thinking about getting into ham radio and trying to
build a simple ham receiver to listen to CW (no transmitter, as I dont have
a license to do so yet). I found this interesting project and I think I can
do it. Its schematic is in the description of the video. I am thinking
about simplifying it a bit, like the indicator led, the linear regulator
and so on. However, I am not really an expert on the subject and I dont understand some things. Whats the purpose of the "AF Gain" and "AF Filter"
in the schematic? Can I replace the LM386 with an opamp and/or transistor?
Is it ok if I use 2n2222 instead of 2n3904? Considering I only want to
listen to morse code, do I need an absurd antenna? It can also be modified
to other bands, not only 40m. submitted by /u/FutureLizard205
