    40m band antenna problems

    Posted: 22 Jan 2022 06:17 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sa3fsi/40m_band_antenna_problems/

    Hello HAM newbie here,
I just set up a 40m inverted V antenna with a 1:1 balun next to my house. I know the placement isnt ideal, but its really my only option. I have a
problem that my household electronics go crazy when I transmit even with
    only 5-10 W.
Any ideas what I could have done wrong? 73

UPDATE 1: Ill experiment a bit and see if its the antenna or coax causing
the interference, try a longer coax, and if all else fails Ill try adding
the 12 turn ferite choke. Thanks for all the comments :) submitted by /u/jakobk99

    Problems opening FLDIGI on Mac

    Posted: 22 Jan 2022 08:26 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sa62gx/problems_opening_fldigi_on_mac/

Is there a software version of FLDIGI specifically for the Monterey OS?
I ask this, because I recently got a Mac, and have been installing and
setting up some of my ham radio programs on it. FLDIGI was working fine,
but then I started having the issue that it’ll close immediately after opening. I’ve tried re-starting the computer, uninstalling and
re-installing the app, but with no success. Has anyone else had this
    problem?
My macOS is Monterey 12.1 with the M1 chip. The W1HKJ software downloads
page only mentions a version for Big Sur for the M1 chip (*bs.dmg version),
but there is also a *MY.dmg version that was just modified in November. I assumed this was for Monterey and they just forgot to update the
readme.dmg.txt file? Any help is appreciated! submitted by

    Durable J-Pole/Slim Jim question

    Posted: 22 Jan 2022 05:44 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sa2tdo/durable_jpoleslim_jim_question/

Hey guys, quick question here. So for my job I often use a Slim Jim antenna made out of 450 ohm ladder line. However, being solid core wire and often exposed to extreme weather conditions I’ve had a few fail on me causing me
to have to do some field expedient repairs. Kind of need one I can just
smash into a bag as fast as possible and not worry about it too much.
Has anyone had any luck on making one out of something more durable like braided core? I have an idea of how to make one, but am curious as to the
need of an RF choke to match feed point impedances.

    Kenwood TM-281A vs Yaesu FTM-3100R

Hi all, I am looking for opinions on which radio I should install for my pickup. Currently looking at the Kenwood TM-281A and Yaesu FTM-3100R. I am looking between these two because they have front facing speakers (a must because they will be installed in a custom steel console) and because they
are both 2m only radios. I cant seem to find many videos on the 3100R so I
am turning to anyone here for experience and opinions. 73 - K5ALL

Question about HF vertical antenna placement

    Posted: 22 Jan 2022 10:03 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sa87f5/question_about_hf_vertical_antenna_placement/

Hi everyone. Ive moved into a neighborhood with no HOA, which means its
time for an antenna upgrade. I picked up a used Gap Challenger DX from
another ham and Im trying to figure out the best place to put it. The
    options are:
    1) At the back corner of my house. My neighbors house is technically far
enough away based on online calculators, but I could see my neighbor
getting worried. Nearby metal gutters might also be a concern.
    2) farther back in my backyard, but ~10 feet lower due to a steep slope.
    3) option 2 but lifted up 10 feet or so somehow. Not sure what that would
    mean for the ground radials.
    Any thoughts? submitted by /u/rogue_ego

Hey guys, just got my handhelds and license approved but I have a question about the call signs. I have a background in aviation so radio is not new
to me but… when we’re flying if our call sign is N881OM we’ll just use 1-Oscar-Mike. Can you do this with callsigns too? The reason I ask is
because the last 3 of my call sign are just numbers, so I was gonna do the
last 4. Thanks everyone! submitted by /u/Woodworker2020

Bringing an upconverter into your life...

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 08:36 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s9u770/bringing_an_upconverter_into_your_life/

For those who are interested in upconverters for their SDRs, the Nooelec is popular and available here https://www.nooelec.com/store/ham-it-up-plus-pcb.html or on Amazon.com Note that upconverters will take input from say the 2M band and input/output in
HF (300KHz-65MHz). Power out of this thing is minimal (1W) so ideally
suited to receive or maybe WSPR for transmit.
An alternate technology which is actually quite popular is "transverters".
One of the nice features of many modern transceivers is the provision for transverters. A transverter will take a low power signal on say 28MHz and
it is transvert to another frequency/band such as 2M, 70CM or others.
On transceivers without software control, you will need to do the
calculation in your head and know when you are on 28Mhz, it is really
144Mhz. On transceivers with transverter support, the transceiver will
perform the mapping and thus 144.000Mhz on the VFO is actually 28.000 out
the transceiver transverter port and 144.000MHz out the transverter.
The transverter itself is responsible for amplifying the signal thus you
will find the price of transverters reflect their power capabilities.
At the low end of the price scale are the "Ukrainian" transverters which
    are fairly inexpensive: https://transverters-store.com
At the high end of the price range are: http://www.q5signal.com and https://shop.kuhne-electronic.com/kuhne/en/shop/converter-transverte/transverter/
So why would you spend a bucket of money on a transverter instead of a dedicated transceiver? If you have a nice HF transceiver with integrated station automation and remote capabilities, adding a transverter gets you
the extra band(s) without having to build or adapt your station automation
and remote operations. As an example a Flex Radio out of the box has remote capabilities and transverter support, so plugging in a transverter also
gives you remote operations on the band that the transverter supports.
When you are working high up in the microwave bands, transceivers dont
exist to support those frequencies, so it is much easier to transvert the
GHz signal down into an off the shelf transceiver.
The attached article details some of the complex station automation that
can be built around transverters: https://www.flexradio.com/insider/articles/update-full-duplex-vhf-uhf-system-using-flexradio-sdr/
The attached kit allows transverter ports to be added to a 7300 and you
will also need to add a transverter: https://shop.kuhne-electronic.com/kuhne/en/shop/konverter-transverte/transverter/Transverterinterface+for+IC7300+KIT/?card=1820
Transverter manual for the Elecraft: https://ftp.elecraft.com/XV/Manuals%20Downloads/E740096%20XV%20Transverter%20Owners%20Manual%20Rev%20F1.pdf
TL/DR - Upconverters are a nice accessory for an SDR to provide HF band
access. Transverters are a nice accessory for HF transceivers to add
VHF/UHF and above to your stations. submitted by /u/6-20PM

ICOM 7300 Accessory Jack Wiring Wrong?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2022 04:51 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/sa1v1a/icom_7300_accessory_jack_wiring_wrong/

I am working on getting a Drake 7000e communications terminal wired up to
the accessory jack of my ICOM 7300. I thought I had the wiring figured out (earlier post linked below), but as I went to start getting it wired up, I discovered that the accessory jack that came with my radio is seemingly
wired wrong. According to the manual, red should be pin 2 (GND) and orange should be pin 3 (SEND), but they are reversed. In addition, black should be
pin 10 (FSKK) but it is pin 11 (MOD). Below is a video of me testing the
red and orange wires with a multimeter to verify.
Am I crazy, or missing something? can I not read a diagram? Has this ever happened to anyone else?
