A Morse Code chat bot would be great practice. Something you could actually interact with. For example, it would speed up if you send "QRQ". Does this exist? submitted by /u/mithc_radio

Ive got a spool of RG-8/U that I bought off FB Marketplace some months ago.
I will freely admit that I have not been as good to it as I perhaps should
have been, because now there is some kind of yuck on the center conductor
and it wont tin. The shield still looks OK. Id hate to throw the lot out -
is there anything I can do to clean the yuck off the center conductor? submitted by /u/popefelix

So forgive me if this is a noobish post, Ive been lurking for sometime and
have been interested in radio pretty much my whole life. My grandfather had
an amateur technicians license and got me into the hobby of swling. Id like
to read about the basics of radio, info that would help me in radio repair/building at some point. I am an electrician and am able to read schematics and have learned some about electronic logic in circuits, but
would like to find something useful for the electronics hobbyist like the
old correspondence courses people used to do. Anyhow any advice or nudges
in the right direction would be appreciated. Thank you. submitted by /u/vehcks

RFI throughout the spectrum on my rig, not sure what could be causing it. I
am using a switch mode PSU and heard that it can be a major source of interference, and to mitigate that I have placed ferrite rings on the AC
and DC sides of the PSU, but still there is a lot of it.

    History of FM Radio

Interesting post from Kathy Loves Physics & History about the invention of
FM radio and all the patents and lawsuits that ensued. Found it quite interesting! RCA almost tried to kibosh the technology because they had
such a stronghold on AM radio and massive investments in CRT technologies
    for the upcoming TV industry.

Portable/Trail friendly resonant 80-20m wire antennas (EFHW?) mainly for
    NVIS

    Posted: 20 Jan 2022 11:23 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s8qrc6/portabletrail_friendly_resonant_8020m_wire/

I feel like I have an endless list of questions so thanks to everyone for always having such great replies!
My brother is also a Ham and we were talking about trying NVIS to
communicate via HF during the summer camping season here in Ontario/Quebec
so would be a 200-400km range or so (ie from Toronto to southern Ontario/Western Quebec). My HF radio has an ATU (G90) but hes going to be getting an IC-705 with no built in ATU. I may end up getting something
smaller than the G90 down the road too for backcountry camping as well, but
    not yet.
Ive been researching antennas that we could use that would be
trail/backcountry friendly and think than an EFHW would make the most
sense. I really want it to be very small to fit in a pack easily. The issue
is most of the compact resonant ones Ive found dont include 80m
    for example:
    myantennas EFHW-4010-P https://myantennas.com/wp/product/efhw-4010p/
    Par EndFedz 102040 https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/pez-eft-102040).
Yes theyre very expensive but I do like the pre-made aspect of it as Im not
    too handy.
I feel like 80m would be essential for NVIS as we cant always assume 40m
would be open. Having 20m on the antenna is also nice for when Id like to
do POTA etc. I assume 160m is likely out of the question realistically due
to antenna lengths and I dont think 160 is as useful for NVIS anyway if I recall.
I have a packtenna 9:1 random wire antenna and a sotabeams bandspringer
midi 60-10m but I believe these can be sort of used on 80m. Still, both of these need the ATU to do it and would be quite inefficient on 80. We also wouldnt be able to use these unless we get an external ATU for the 705
which really adds a lot of bulk and extra cables while camping!
So whats the best course of action? Get the external ATU for the 705 and
just use the random wire antennas? Get a linked dipole (really dont like
the idea of having to take it down every time I want to switch bands)? Get
a base station EFHW that is resonant on most bands 80-10 and just accept
the weight and size penalty of that? (also not keen on this option).
What Id really like is something like the myantennas EFHW-4010-p above that also had 80 :) submitted by /u/gimmesnows

    IC-7300 vs FT-2000 vs FT-891 with tuner vs ...

    Hello!
Im looking to get into HF and was browsing used markets in Europe to see
    whats available.
I have compiled couple of options all for the same general price (around
    900 EUR):
IC-7300 in great condition, with EMC filter on power lead (not sure if it
    comes with all European models)
IC-7300 for 50 EUR more, but with 12 month warranty left (its in
Netherlands, not sure if warranty is really useful for me). Also it
probably comes with SM-30 mic, its on photos, but I forgot to ask if
    included)
FT-2000 in a very nice condition (without a box tho)
    FT-891 with FC-50 tuner and SCU-17 soundcard
IC-7300 is the most feature packed by a lot, FT-891 is really portable,
FT-2000 has built in power supply and a lot of knobs and buttons (digging
in menus and a touch screen are the main reason Im still undecided).
Ill be thankful for your thoughts about those transceivers and maybe you
can help me to decide what is the best HF rig for me! submitted by

Looking for an antenna replacement for my old Kenwood TH-K2AT. What would
be the best 2m antenna for it? I do have a SMA to BNC adapter if that helps expand my options. I would like to keep it as close to the original in size (which was about 6”) as I use it a lot for traveling. submitted by /u/cdh8585

does receiver sensitivity increase when we perform interpolation ?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2022 12:11 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s8dz2l/does_receiver_sensitivity_increase_when_we/

In QPSK, we can send one sample per symbol. and that make bandwidth = 2 *
    data Rate.
and if we have 2 samples per symbol. that double the bandwidth.
in general doubling bandwidth make receiver sensitivity less 3 dB.

My Question, how much gain we have when we perform interpolation "more
samples per symbol" ? and in general what is the balance rule between
increase gain when perform more sample per symbol VS decrease receiver sensitivity because more bandwidth ? submitted by /u/moemuses
