To me this sounded like a propagation test put on the air by the station
this evening. This would therefore be an awesome visualization of the waves
and ripples in the ionosphere. Can anyone confirm?

Radio System for Communication on Off-Grid Property

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 07:24 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s88tv1/radio_system_for_communication_on_offgrid_property/

We have a somewhat large off-grid property in Northern Maine. There is no
cell phone reception or power aside from a generator and a 12 volt battery array. I am looking for some type of radio communication system that can be used for internal communication within the property. I am not necessarily needing to talk to the outside world. This is strictly for me and my family
to use when hiking, hunting, 4 wheeling, canoeing, etc.. We have tried
basic motorola walkie talkies/ 2 way radios and the range just isnt good enough. I am looking for a fixed "base station" radio for the cabin, 1 for
my vehicle, and 2-4 handhelds that can be taken into the field. I can mount
any type of antenna on the roof of the cabin if needed. The terrain is
hilly and very dense forest. Ideally something that functions within a 5-10 mile range. Does such a thing exist? Would this require a license ? I
really have no knowledge of any of this. Thank you! submitted by /u/Neat_Response1023

Why does the FCC not allow repeaters on MURS, and what is the unlicensed alternative?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 07:12 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s88lwn/why_does_the_fcc_not_allow_repeaters_on_murs_and/

I already know a good portion of yall are either laughing or rolling your
eyes at the mention of "MURS"
But hey, Im a business owner, MURS is for businesses and individuals, and I want to use the radio to communicate with my employees in real time--and I
dont want them to have to get licensed just to be able to talk to me in
real time from a few miles away.
It would be so much easier just to be able have a modest MURS repeater so
we can communicate as a business in a 5-10 mi radius using the handhelds.
But instead, the handhelds have to be attached to a long coax on both ends.
The office is like a faraday cage. FRS radios do not reach. And cell phones
are not adequate or cool enough to address the need. The only way seems
like having to license everyone and to set up a GMRS repeater, where we
will not be able to talk as casually.
Im giving awards for the best suggestions or comments.
The office is about 4 miles max from the furthest point we want to be able
to talk. We have a lot of exposed power lines and trees between these
points of contact. However, this area lacks any mountains, significant
hills, etc. (We are low elevation, flat, not TOO many trees, or at least
    not very tall ones)
Your advice or fun comments would be much appreciated.
Thank you all for taking the time to read my post. submitted by /u/truthfulinternet

    22 meter beacons

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 10:39 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s7x2b2/22_meter_beacons/

Stopped by the 22m beacon watering hole ~ 13.54-13.56 MHz. It was crowded. Heard (by ear) AN2 in TN, RF in NC, FJB in ?, and others. Good frequency
for a propagation check. Some of these very low power beacons, a few milliwatts, have been heard world wide.
I find listening to different beacons fade in an out relaxing. Have to use
a narrow bandpass filter, about 600Hz, due to the CODAR wave height
measurement pest thats sweeping through the band. Could use Argo or
spectran and copy them from the waterfall but its not as much fun for me. submitted by /u/ArmstrongRotor

kit he could build. Does anyone have some recommendations? Is it possible
to build your own HF where youd get a far range? Hes more interested in

I really like the new time synchronization software for my IC-7300.
However, I also like to keep my radio clock on UCT, but it appears I cant
enjoy both. Am I overlooking something simple or is it possible to do UCT
with the software? Ive tried manually setting the clock to UCT and that
works fine until the software syncs again. Maybe Ill set my computer time
to UCT and see if that takes care of my problem. Thanks & 73 submitted

Deep cycle battery burst -- looking for tips on cleanup and a better way to store them

    https://imgur.com/a/vXqcutT
I wasnt there at the time, but the lid was resting on the tub the last time
I saw anything. Only one of the two batteries burst, but it did so with
enough force to break the tub and spray acid for a couple of feet.
I put down a lot of baking soda but had to leave the area because my
breathing was starting to suffer. Once I have enough baking soda down that theres no more fizzing, I need to remove the damaged battery and dispose of
    it somehow.
The internet tells me to double-bag the battery and put the cleaned-up
baking soda in the same bag. I need to call the trash folks to see if I
need to save this for a hazardous waste pickup or bring it in or what. Obviously I need something safer than a plastic tub to hold the batteries
in the future. Whats the right way to do this? submitted by /u/mathuin2

Computing device for ham shack, POTA/SOTA and portable operations

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 06:40 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s7rkka/computing_device_for_ham_shack_potasota_and/

First off let me say in advance I am a noob, so apologies if I am not explaining things well or omitting pertinent information.
I am a Mac user, I have heard here and there from people IRL as well as
online that ham software tends to work better and is more compatible on windows, so I am seeking a portable device that runs windows 10 or 11
(being able to dual boot Linux is a plus) that can be a good all-a rounder device.
I am mostly interested in digital modes, for vhf and hf, and I want to be
able to take my setup fully portable but also be at home in the ham shack.
I am seeking advice on what sort of computer equipment people use in the
field, any pros and cons you have and some things I should look for or
avoid when picking a device. Price is not a concern but I don’t want to needlessly overspend if that makes sense. Maybe I’ll go with a desktop for the ham shack setup and then where I need advice is what sort of portable computer I should get. This device will just be for ham stuff and not
general computing needs. Pros/cons for a handheld/pocket device like a GPD win, a tablet like a surface or a regular laptop? Any specific ports or functionality or specs (cpu/ram/hdd) I should target? recommendations for
    power and charging?
Since I’m targeting portable operations, battery life weight and form
    factor are important.
Thanks in advance for the help and advice, this is an awesome community I
have been lurking for quite some time. submitted by /u/Sqwavbip5

How Does One Send a Morale Message to Servicemen via MARS?

    Posted: 19 Jan 2022 01:24 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s80z8g/how_does_one_send_a_morale_message_to_servicemen/

As a new ham I see references to MARS pop up occasionally in various
articles. I know that in the past it was much more active as a means of servicemen keeping in touch with their family back home. The modern
Internet has done much to change that.
Hypothetically if I, as non-MARS ham, wanted to send well wishes to a serviceman via the MARS system how would I do it? In the back of my head I expect some sort of NTS <-> MARS gateway for message passing apparatus. I
have no idea if that mental image is remotely accurate or not.
Also, can someone here speak to what its like to actually work with MARS
these days? If morale messages are much less common than in the past, what
else does MARS do? Wikipedia touches on it but is a bit vague on the
details. Id really like to get a sense of a "day in the life" of a modern
MARS operator if I could. submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa
