HF backpacking
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 04:16 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s7c9pb/hf_backpacking/
Im looking for ideas one lightweight equipment and feasibility. I like backpacking. I know people make mobile HF units. The question is, do you
think its possible to put together a radio, antenna and battery under 10
lbs (ideally 5 lbs) that can be carried in a backpack and set up at camp? I dont want to carry a heavy battery, and a small radio is a must. Im
thinking a simple wire dipole that can be rolled then strung up in trees.
Can small nickel batteries run a rig and transmit something worthwhile?
Ive never done HF, mostly Ive used the local repeater. But because Im
insane, I have an extra license. So no limits there.
EDIT: I said nickel batteries, I meant lithium. submitted by

Update from:
https://np.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/7sj588/on_what_countries_can_an_i_apply_for_a_license/
It began on May, 2018. Official application was made on february 2021 and
got my callsign (Spectrum Concession Title) today! Taking years to get on
the air is not unheard on Mexico, but recently its been improving, and
theres a proposal on changes on legislation that hopefully will get through this year.

How to get into HF cheaply

I am young enough for r/teenagers so I obviously dont have that much money
to spend on radios. Is there some sort of cheap way into HF? I want to try
out all modes like SSB, CW, FT8, SSTV and anything else. I use KiwiSDRs to listen.

ARRL 2022 National "Hamcation" in Orlando Feb 11-13 -- no mention of
COVID-19 precautions

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s79bza/arrl_2022_national_hamcation_in_orlando_feb_1113/
I just learned of the 2022 ARRL National Hamcation in Orlando, and I am enthusiastic about joining the Emergency Communications training track. But
in spite of the current national COVID-19 death rate being above 1,700 per
day, I could find absolutely no mention of mask policy, immunization
policy, or any provision for attendance by telepresence. Its as though we
are not in the midst of a pandemic. WTF? I mean, I know that many if not
most hams have a libertarian bent, but it is alarming and surprising for
this ARRL Life Member (since 1976) to see no acknowledgement of the
pandemic. submitted by /u/KA2CNN

Best SDR software for IF panadapter? I'm sure this has been asked before,
but my Google-foo is weak on this subject and I can't find any clear
answers or discussions.
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 05:35 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s7dyox/best_sdr_software_for_if_panadapter_im_sure_this/
Hi there, I have a Kenwood TS-530S. I installed an IFace 2.0 IF tap and amplifier, and bought an RTL-SDR V3. Ive been trying to find good software thatll give me the best features for DSP, but I cant find a clear answer.
So far Ive settled on HDSDR, and it seems very powerful from what little
Ive done with it. Im still configuring it, I ran out of time and havent had
the time to sit back down with it.
Im looking for powerful software, even if its paid. I like the noise
reduction feature of the 7300, I basically leave it on all the time, sadly
I dont have regular access to the 7300 anymore, so I want to boost my 530S
RX capabilities.
HDSDR has a noise reduction feature that does appear to work, and it seems pretty easy to adjust the filters which is nice too.
Im just wondering if theres something even better?
Thanks for any opinions you can share!
Edit: yes I know its best to remove any and all noise before it even
arrives at the radio. Ive scoured my house and reduced my noise level as
low as itll go. Unfortunately Im in an apartment, and Im using a fan
vertical antenna outside in a tree, so the noise is higher than it could
be. But when spring arrives Ill be adding a LoG for super low noise RX. Too much snow right now, and frozen ground. submitted by /u/Beastlykings

I recently acquired a TH-D74A tri band radio. I really like it and learning
a lot of what it can do. It has a diamond back antenna already. I want to
get an extension cable to have another antenna mounted when Im sitting
around. Does anyone have a recommended antenna extension cable?

Multi-band dipoles
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 07:48 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s70j4y/multiband_dipoles/
Since electricity follows the path of least resistance, would it be
possible to solder multiple dipoles resonant to one UHF connector from the
feed and ground points? I would assume the RF would go towards the most
least resistant dipole antenna, but the radiation pattern would be effected
by the other lengths of wire that would also be effecting the SWR because
of it’s parasitic characteristics unless it’s only two dipoles facing in different directions. submitted by /u/joe_rt

Dstarinfo.com Repeater List
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 02:01 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s796h9/dstarinfocom_repeater_list/
I travel a decent amount and spent about 70 nights a year in my van. I
recently sold my FTM-400 to try a 5100A solely for then”Near Repeater” DR function. I haven’t hit the road with it yet but like the idea of always being able to hit the local repeaters without constant reprogramming my
radio, trilling to find the repeater in a long list, etc. That being said,
I have a couple questions.
1- Curious how does the Repeater List that you download on dstarinfo.com
get populated? User input, Repeater Book?
2- Currently I’ve just downloaded nearest repeaters to my zip code
(Montana) but when looking at the downloads it stretching out very far. Is there a way to download a repeater list for each state I plan in traveling
in this year? For example, separate out Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri. If there is a way to do this do I upload them as different memory Groups or just multiple CSV Repeater Lists?
Thanks in advance everyone. Even after almost 20 years of playing radio I
learn something new almost everyday on here! :) submitted by /u/MTMicroAdventures

What's your method of choice for organizing frequencies in an HT?
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 05:32 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6xm9s/whats_your_method_of_choice_for_organizing/
Im more of an HF guy but I just picked up a TH-D74 and want to try out
V/UHF again. Right now, repeaters are sorted by frequency (increasing) and
band (increasing). So its like: RX TX Name 145.190 144.590 Aurora
145.340 144.740 Evergreen 224.380 222.780 Lakewood 446.850 441.850 Franktown 446.8625 441.8625 Boulder
I dont like how the towns & cities are separated, however. I figure it
would be nice to have all the Boulder repeaters together so that if Im in boulder, I can quickly jump between them. So Im thinking of sorting first
by location, and then by frequency.
Are there better methods of organizing repeaters in your HT? How do you do
it? submitted by /u/minorsecond

Problem with Kenwood TH-D72 2.5 mm Jack Port During Satellite Ops
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 08:17 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s715ru/problem_with_kenwood_thd72_25_mm_jack_port_during/
Im sending my audio of the pass out to a recorder as well as headphones,
but Im having a problem where the slightest jostling of the connection at
this jack port causes loss of the audio stream. I generally have my HT in
one hand and my antenna in the other, so this requires me to put the
antenna down and fidget with the port until I get the stream back, pick up
and adjust my antenna, and then promptly lose the stream again. I feel that this problem is much worse in cold weather- perhaps metal shrinkage causes
a poorer fit in the port? Has anyone else run into this? Anyone have a recommended (quality) connector to use for this application which requires
a 2.5 mm male to 3.5 mm female conversion (splitter or not- either is
fine)? Im finding plenty out there but they all seem to be of similar
quality to what Im using. I might be asking a lot of something designed for indoor stereo use. No problems with recording/hearing on the same equipment (excluding the 2.5 mm jack converter) through my Yaesu FT-60 3.5 mm port
which I used for the recent SSTV event without issue. submitted by /u/jimmy_beans

Kenwood TM-710GE Serial connection.
Posted: 18 Jan 2022 03:32 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s7baen/kenwood_tm710ge_serial_connection/
I have a TM-710GE and tried to connect it to pc via a FTDI breakout like
https://tinkersphere.com/4415-large_default/3-3v-5v-ftdi-basic-breakout-mini-usb.jpg
Connaction(to panel unit) were as follows: TX -> RX RX -> TX CTS -> RTS RTS
CTS GND -> GND
Parity bit: none Stop bits: 1 Data bits: 8
also i tried connecting TX -> TX RX -> RX
But only when I turn on the radio there is a gibberish text that i cant
read. I tried serveral baudrates from 1200 to 115200.
Where could the problem be? Is the breakoutboard even compatible with this serial port or do I have to use a Dsub converter? submitted by
