    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 06:22 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6m15e/back_scatter_on_106_meters/

I’ve been reading the chapter on propagation in my ARRL antenna book and it says:
“6 meter beams may zero in on a hot spot in the Caribbean or south
Atlantic, where there is no land, let alone other 6 meter stations —
keeping in contact while they wait for the band to open to a place where
    there is somebody.”
It also mentions this happens on 10 meters during low sunspot numbers.
Have any of you experience this? If so that is absolutely fascinating.

I have recently acquired a shoebox full of Russian, UK and US subminiture valves/tubes. Are there any project books, new or old that might have some useful projects. I am looking for QRP transmitters, regen receivers and
maybe a direct conversion RX (Probably bit optimistic).
I have also acquired a Sputnik transmitter kit using two Russian pencil thickness devices

    Antenna square footage calculation?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 06:26 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6m3q4/antenna_square_footage_calculation/

So now that I have an antenna rotor source located, I need to figure out
the square footage of my antenna to choose the right size rotor. It will
also help me figure out the wind rating for my tower, and since I am in a hurricane area, thats relevant info.
    Ive ordered a winegard hd8200u, which is 110"W x 130"L x 33" H. I presume
they are looking at the square footage of the all the individual elements,
in the worst case direction. I suppose I can measure the rod thicknesses
with calipers and measure the lengths and add it all up? submitted by /u/Capital_Sherbet_6507

Good evening folks, I am KD2YOT
Newly licensed as of Tuesday evening and getting my feet wet, I just got
myself up and running on Echolink. Now, I hear of something that sounds
kinda similar, called D-Star? I just registered my call sign with them, but
Im not sure how I can access the local repeaters that have it on there. Do
I need a special radio to access it? My radio is a Baofeng UV-5R (ugh, I
know), and if I can access other radios using D-Star through my repeaters
Ill be as happy as a clam!
Thank you for taking the time to read and reply, I truly appreciate your advice. 73 :) submitted by /u/CasioCollectorAndy

Hello all, I have a home brew 20m dipole up, the swr is about 1.2 through
the biggest part of 20m. I havent tried yet, but ...should my internal
tuner be able to tune 10m without destroying my front end? It is fed with
8x coax and is about 35ft up. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. 73s submitted by /u/lpmagic

    Apartments, HF, and the Slinktenna

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 08:35 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6861b/apartments_hf_and_the_slinktenna/

Im considering getting a Slinktenna as an indoor HF antenna due to an
apartment living situation. I think I can just suspend it from some plant
hooks in the ceiling via some paracord and call it a day. But, I keep
hearing that the thing requires and antenna tuner of 9 or 10 to 1. Im
    upgrading from a Baofeng.
I (vaguely) recall from recently taking the General exam that the function
of an antenna tuner is to match the impedance of the antenna to the 50 ohms
the radio expects. Thats literally all I know about antenna tuners and Im
not even sure that understanding is entirely accurate.
The prices for an antenna tuner really seem to sing all over the place. Im divided between getting a nice (but expensive) Icom and an inexpensive CW
only radio. If I add too much to the price point with the cost of the
antenna tuner, that will constrain my options on which radio I purchase.
    Any suggestions? submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa

Trying to calculate theoretical max range and I'm having issues

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 10:43 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6bcn3/trying_to_calculate_theoretical_max_range_and_im/

New to the hobby here. One of my friends asked me "well how far can you actually communicate (assuming simplex, no repeaters) with your handheld?" Assuming ~144 MHz FM transmission @ 5 watt transmit with 2 dBi antenna.
Both source and destination radios are the same.
I played with some numbers here using my handheld (Yaesu FT-60) manual. 0.2 microvolt sensitivity for 12 dB SINAD @ 2 meter.
Is plugging this into Friis transmission and solving for range not the
right thing to do if Im looking for a theoretical range?
    Specifically,
    Pt = 5W
    Gt = Gr = 2 dBi
    lamda = c/144e6
Pr = 0.2 uV = -144.44 dBm (this might be my mistake)
All of my units are converted and consistent when I plug it into the
equation. My range was WAY too high to be correct.
Hoping someone can say "youre using the wrong value for Pr" or "youre not factoring in XXXX" or something like that.
    Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I made a mistake going from 0.2 uV to dBm. submitted by

    Antenna Rotator recommendation?

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 12:11 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6dja9/antenna_rotator_recommendation/

I asked this question a while back, but now my new 30 tower from ROHN
arrived today and I forgot where I wrote down the answer.
I am installing a UHF/High VHF TV antenna on top of a 30 mast and I want to install a rotator. There was a recommendation of a high quality, reliable rotator that someone posted. It may have even been a new old-stock part or
a rebuild of an old-stock part. There was some discussion about the
old-stock being better than what is available new.
In any case, my permit application is in to the city, the tower is laying
in sections in my shed, and the antenna is on the way so I guess I should
    order the rotator now :)
In addition to the TV antenna, any suggestions on hanging a UHF/VHF antenna
for HAM use (Technician license here). All I currently own is a yaesu
handheld, but I like the idea of plugging it into a mast-mounted antenna
for better range. submitted by /u/Capital_Sherbet_6507

The atu requires at least 9w to tune however the xiegu has power rollback

Im having an odd issue on my Radioddity DB25 Pro with a slim-jim antenna.
When RXing a repeater about 20 miles from me, I get full quiet for the
start of the conversation, but then after about four seconds or so I get
some static, which builds up until I cant hear anything. Then it fades back down for half a minute or so. Comes in and out like a wave.
I recently shortened the antenna a bit, could that be causing the issue? submitted by /u/LinuxIsFree

Confused and looking for digital voice mode recommendations

    Posted: 17 Jan 2022 10:44 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s6be6x/confused_and_looking_for_digital_voice_mode/

Hi, I’m a young dude getting back into amateur radio. I’m looking at getting a lower priced radio/system to get on digital voice.
    Here’s what I’m considering currently:
DudeStar- Seems like a really fun and cool, but a bit too complicated and
I’m worried that it wouldn’t work at all because I’ve had bad experiences with open source software, especially when you have to build it. Plus to transmit you need extra hardware, and ultimately I’d want to link it up
with a cheap analog radio as a node so I can communicate in true “ham radio style”. All of this is very cool but it seems very complicated and I don’t think if I’m up for the task unless anyone has other solutions.
Yaesu Fusion- Seems like the best option, but to transmit data and images
you need a radio which is at least 500+ dollars from what I’ve seen. It’s also proprietary hardware only (in theory, there are some exceptions like
open source software). For the context of people in the future that are confused in the comments I was concerned that it would be largely an
elderly userbase but it seems I may have been making a large assumption,
I’ve re thought my viewpoint based on what I’ve heard from the comments of others.
DMR- I feel neutral towards this one. It seems cool on the surface because
of the pricing and popularity but it also seems very complicated and restrictive. Let me know if you think it’s worth it.
D-Star - Not interested. Seems unpopular compared to other options and is proprietary to a few brands. No big advantages I can think of.
Let me know what you think and thanks for your help!
Edit: I realize what I wrote is vague and could be misinterpreted, so I
have clarified a few things in the replies to comments below
Edit 2: I’m in the Detroit area submitted by /u/Faketuxedo

Preface, Im sick and am currently on decongestants which make my mind a
little spacy. I was filling out the FCC form to get my FRN and hit submit
and all. I clicked away without realizing that that page was apparently my
only (?) way of finding out what my FRN was.
Any ideas as to how I find my FRN? I tried the license search, but that
didnt turn up anything (probably because the account doesnt have a license).
If not, I went back through the registration page and, from what I can
tell, I get get another FRN associated with my SSN. Is there any downside
to having a "dangling" FRN hanging around? Or at least a way of deleting it later? submitted by /u/u2berggeist
