IP over ham radio? or something similar

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 08:38 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s33kcw/ip_over_ham_radio_or_something_similar/

Hey, so I am planning a CubeSat project in my school and Ive been looking
into communications. Ive heard a very common method for communication is
ham radio. To have the most flexibility, Id love if there was a way to do
IP over ham radio instead of just sending commands, that way I could start
an ssh connection with the onboard computer to fix problems and transfer
photos off it. I cant find too much information on how to actually make something like this, Ive heard of AMPRNet, HamWAN and NPR and was wondering which one would be best for what I need it to do, or if I should even go
down the route of IP over ham. Thanks. submitted by /u/DirkDozer

What's this power connector on my radio called, where to buy more?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 09:32 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s34sa4/whats_this_power_connector_on_my_radio_called/

Looking through google images I see this referred to as a "quick
disconnect" or "pigtail" connector, but cant find where to purchase more
under those terms. It looks like molex but with flat pins instead of round.
Im looking to buy the other half so I can connect it to a battery. If
theres a correct term or part number Id like to look it up on ebay,
    avoiding Amazon. https://preview.redd.it/axx4xzn7qhb81.jpg?width=1296&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=014b5dccb88ae8b8dfe35e975b6d83e415b2bfea

Sanity check - Im a new technician about to buy a Yaesu HT and I want to
make sure Im buying the right thing for my needs/wants.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 03:52 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s3df37/sanity_check_im_a_new_technician_about_to_buy_a/

I’m a new technician, and I’m going to replace the trusty baofeng with something more capable.
My local repeaters use Wires-X and Fusion and obviously my baofeng isn’t going to play nice with those features, so priority 1 is that ability to
join those digital rooms with my handheld.
I’d also like to monitor basically every band available (shortwave, air
    band, etc).
I’d need something like a ft-5dr to do all of this, correct?
I want a vx-6r but I’d miss out on the fusion and wires-x stuff.
I could get a ft-70dr, but I’d miss out on the ability to monitor outside
    the typical ham stuff.
So I guess my question for the pros is - do I just buy the ft-5dr, or do I
    get the vx-6r and a ft-70dr?
Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/tc693

How often do you go portable?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 06:42 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s30zy8/how_often_do_you_go_portable/

I’m new to the hobby, and just ordered a telescoping mast and antenna from
DX Engineering for a removable setup at home, but was wondering if I’ll
ever realistically use the mast tripod I got to go with it, since I
actually won’t be using the tripod at my house but will just be attaching
the mast to an existing structure. How often (if ever) do you use a
portable setup and do you think I’ll actually have use for the mast tripod
as I get more involved in the hobby? I don’t really go camping ever and don’t have a RV either, which after reading on this sub seems to be top use cases for a mobile setup. Just curious what you all think! submitted by /u/Mean-Difference-197

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:20 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s39ypf/icom_ic7300_digital_modes/

I used to use this in digital modes quite a bit , however my USB port
stopped working on the radio itself . I learned of another cable that would also be able to control it through laptop . I would love to get it fixed
but the cost of repairs is just too much . So I have ordered this cable
    here- https://www.ebay.com/itm/3FT-FT8-FT4-JT65-PSK-Audio-Interface-13-Pin-DIN-Cable-DC-15C-for-ICOM-/154023424062?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
I was wondering if there is another cable that needs to go with it in order
to work or if that cable will be able to send the signals instead.

    YSF2DMR Poor Sound Quality

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 10:59 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s36rx9/ysf2dmr_poor_sound_quality/

Every time I use my hotspots to cross mode into brandmeister the RX sound quality is horrible. Almost everyone sounds distorted and overdriven, to
    the point of being unreadable.
Is there anything I can do to fix that, or is it simply the cost of
operating cross mode on a pi-star. Im curious if theres anywhere to make adjustments.
I doubt its a problem with my radios, every Yaesu I have exhibits this
problem, whereas on my DMR HT brandmeister sounds great. I also have no
issues running YSF natively. submitted by /u/Altruistic-Radish-17

I have a Yaesu FT 8900R and I want to be able to listen the the 11 meter CB band. It is a quad band rig, and is only one MHz off in receive frequency
to be able to listen to CB.
I do not want to be able to transmit on CB. I can get a CB radio for that
if I wanted to do that. Its illegal, and not in my interests as a ham radio operator.
I live in a wintery area and road conditions get poor, and I would love to
be able to hear what the truckers are saying about road conditions, even if
    FM.
I gave it a Google and all I can find is extended TX mods for 900mhz or whatever.

I have just discovered how much fun DMR is and I am really enjoying talking
to younger hams (anyone under 50) about new technologies. I never felt like
I fit in at the local clubs but talking to hams my age with similar
interests around the world has been so invigorating. I would love to chat
with all of you about the latest posts in the subreddit and new ideas and projects each week.
DMR allows us to have a nice ragchew without worrying about conditions. Its also a great way for new hams on r/amateurradio to get involved because
there is no HF rig or repeater required--any Technician can get a Baofang
DMR handheld and a Pi-star hotspot for less than $300 total and join the
    net.
Lets meet weekly on the Redditnet group (Brandmeister talk group 98003, AllStarLink node 48224, Echolink node W5RI-L, D-Star via XLX216 Module E).

Do all HF multi-band antennas for the car have terrible SWR?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:51 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s3aokl/do_all_hf_multiband_antennas_for_the_car_have/

I checked out some multi-band Hf antenna for a mag-mount adapter on the car
and I’m assuming they’re meant to be used with an antenna tuner because they’re usually better on the VHF/UHF, but terrible on HF. Could anyone
make any monopole recommendations for a portable HF antenna for the car or without radials so it can be attached to something for POTA. submitted

    Help IDing a signal

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 09:02 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s343ns/help_iding_a_signal/

    Hi all -
First off, this question isnt directly related to amateur radio but I cant think of another group that knows as much about radio signals and
interference, please feel free to direct me to another group that might
    know better.
Im doing some in-house EMC testing on some devices at work with a signal analyzer and near field probe. I found strong, consistent narrow-band
signals at 4.5MHz and 13.5 MHz. I dont think this is related to our device under test (it should be running at 5MHz and I saw no RF there) but Id like
to know what could cause these signals so that I can account for them and explain why they should be ignored.
We are in a sort of shared facility, we have a number of computers, Wifi networks, and mass spectroscopy/HPLC instruments in our area. The rest of
the facility is used by a group doing custom automation/robotics, but its pretty slow there and more of a warehouse/storage space for their main
building and most of the work there is basic assembly, I dont expect they
have any strong RF sources. Most of the facility equipment (air
compressors, etc.) is way across the building in a separate room so I also
dont think thats going to be a strong source and idk why this would be
    running at MHz frequencies.
    Thanks everyone! submitted by /u/1202_ProgramAlarm

uSDX: Do SDR's mean a path to not need linear amps for SSB? Class E Amplification

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 07:38 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s2pgwh/usdx_do_sdrs_mean_a_path_to_not_need_linear_amps/

    I was reading about https://qrper.com/2020/09/an-introduction-to-the-usdx/
The basic idea behind Class E nonlinear amplifiers is that transistors have little loss when they are switched fully on or off. The losses occur when devices are limiting power flow in linear amplifiers. The idea behind a
Class E amplifier is to use transistors in a switching mode to generate a square wave to drive a resonant circuit to generate RF power.
This method is used in the popular QCX QRP CW transceiver kit line
developed by Hans Summers and sold through QRP Labs https://qrp-labs.com/.
More than 10,000 of these great transceiver kits have been sold (I built
one). There is a good discussion of the circuit and particularly of the
class E amplifier in the excellent QCX documentation https://www.qrp-labs.com/images/qcx/assembly_A4-Rev-5e.pdf.
The QCX was the base for the QCX-SSB which starts with a QCX and modified
the circuit and software to add SSB capabilities. The wizardry that Guido accomplished uses pulse width modulation of the PA supply voltage to
control the amplifier in an Envelope Elimination and Restoration (EER) technique https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/148657773.pdf. To generate SSB a
DSP algorithm samples the audio input and performs a Hilbert transformation
to determine the phase and amplitude of the complex signal. The phase
changes are transformed into temporary frequency changes which are sent to
the clock generator. This result in phase changes on the SSB carrier signal
and delivers a SSB-signal with the opposite side-band components is
    attenuated.

Am I reading this correct to say that there the possibility of Class E amps
for legal limit usage? submitted by /u/mikeinmlb

Weird Project idea: Tiny RF detecting, passive red LED for 2m radio?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 06:03 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s2nhuw/weird_project_idea_tiny_rf_detecting_passive_red/

    Howdy everyone!
Ive got a 2m ham radio station and Im looking to add a little
decorative "On Air" meter to my door and wall which is about 6 feet from my antenna. Nothing fancy, small is better.
I want to power it with the RF coming out of my radios antenna mere feet
away. I know its possible mathematically and physically, but Im unsure how
    to do it exactly.
For reference, the radio outputs 25W out of a slim-jim antenna on
    144-148MHz.
Ive seen numerous experiments with RF harvesting for low-power circuits and
the likes, as well as a few designs similar to what Im looking for, such as this one here https://www.rfsafe.com/product/diy-rf-meter-led-powered-rf-detector-diodes/
    - Although I assume its more optimized for cell phone radiation, not the
lower 144MHz. I also dont want to support a website pushing false info by buying their product (they believe RF can cause cancer, despite being below
    the visible light spectrum, lol).
As someone with little circuitry experience, would any of you wizards be
able to point me to the right circuitry and / or concepts to make this
work? Low cost and low size are best. submitted by /u/LinuxIsFree

    Logging contacts via repeaters

    Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:36 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s2vmub/logging_contacts_via_repeaters/

    Hey there!
Probably a very basic question (sorry, Im a newbie!) but, what do you do
write in your log books when logging single or multiple contacts via
    Repeaters?
At the moment, Im putting the destination persons call sign as the station worked and putting the repeater callsign in the Notes section, but its it
seems to me if Im doing that, theres little point in also filling out the frequency (since thats implied by the repeater), and theres little point putting signal reports in, since my received signal is coming from the
repeater to my fixed station, so the signal strength should be more or less consistent from every contact on the same repeater, wouldnt it?
Also, if youre on a group club net, do you usually log the callsign of each person you talk to on the Club net, or just one contact with the clubs callsign? submitted by /u/enigmait

Old School USAF "Dog Doo" Transmitter

    Posted: 12 Jan 2022 11:39 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s2evy4/old_school_usaf_dog_doo_transmitter/

T-1151 Dog Doo Transmitter at the National Museum of the United States Air Force™ https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/195903/t-1151-dog-doo-transmitter/
In the jungles of Vietnam, the USAF had to get creative in its efforts to transmit radio signals on the ground. First deployed in 1970, this 4-inch
long T-1151 “Doo” Transmitter was made with a peat moss shell to resemble the feces of a dog or monkey. Because its outward appearance discouraged
close examination, the radio transmitter’s signal usually lasted as long as the battery, up to several weeks.
This made it a very effective homing beacon, allowing aircraft to
repeatedly pinpoint spots for airstrikes or reconnaissance. It also made it easier for personnel in need of rescue to discretely signal for help,
usually via Morse code. The transmitter was so well camouflaged that it
could be placed out in the open where other technology could not, and did
not allow enemy forces to know which sites had once been used as
    transmission points. submitted by /u/LoPath
