Its time to review my ARRL membership, so Im revisiting and updating the discount codes I previously posted for new membership / renewal. Each

    Questions about Australian Foundation exam.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 08:06 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1wtzx/questions_about_australian_foundation_exam/

Ill soon be booking in to sit the Australian Foundation exam and I have a couple of questions about the content and process.
Ive been doing pretty well with the the practice questions on the WIA site (https://www.wia.org.au/licenses/foundation/onlineexams/foundation.php).
How closely do these resemble the actual questions in the exam? Are they
the same questions drawn from a pool or do they differ in content?
What type of questions or assessments are done in the practical exam? As
Ill be doing this remotely via Zoom, how are the practical assessments
    carried out?
Ive been reading the WIA Foundation Manual, VK3YEs Aust Ham Handbook and
even an older copy of the ARRL Handbook; Im pretty comfortable with the content. Ive heard the Foundation exam isnt too hard but I dont want to be
too cocky about it and I want to be well prepared as I havent done an exam
    for several decades.
Thanks in advance, Aussie hams!! submitted by /u/geo_log_88

what frequencies do you keep up when your radio is in standby?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 10:19 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1jl21/what_frequencies_do_you_keep_up_when_your_radio/

Hey everyone, Im a relevantly new ham here so sorry if this has been asked before, but I was curious what people keep on their radios when they are
not active in a conversation, or just in stand by. I have a dual time slot radio so I keep my main channel to a local repeater, but the other I leave
on the national simplex line, is this silly or is there a better
combination to keep it at? I know most of this is 100% going to be
subjective to each person and their location as the number of repeaters
youll want to listen to will change because if that. l drive near many
freeways but have yet to have anyone respond on the simplex line, but
assumed it may be useful still to monitor?
I only have a mobile radio at the moment, but Id pose the same question for
hts as well. My assumptions with that will be many would use their scan functions more. Thanks for your time and thoughts, Id love to hear what everyone else does. submitted by /u/KE8Drodenab

Id absolutely love to have a waterfall on my handheld, dont ask me why..
idk, it would just be cool. A good way to see what bands are in use.
Anyway, does anyone know of any radios that have this feature? submitted

augmented reality app for satellite tracking?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 12:32 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1mshk/augmented_reality_app_for_satellite_tracking/

Ive used an app called Sun surveyor to see the positions of the sun and
moon at different times of the day/year. It has an AR function that superimposes the predicted positions of the sun, moon, and milky way on the camera feed. Is there an app that does the same for satellites?
    EDIT:
I should mention Im using an iPhone. submitted by /u/Altie-McAltface

    Weatherproof DC connectors?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 09:43 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1iqcn/weatherproof_dc_connectors/

At the recommendation of this group I have adopted Powerpoles for my DC connectors and am in love with them, thank you.
Now I need to feed a 6 conductor cable into a box that will be attached to
the back of my car. At first I was tempted to use the Powerwerx Chassis
Mount for 4 Powerpole Connectors Sets (8 conductors) but then I realized I
need something weatherproof. I found a few people talking up the merits of Weather Pack connectors but I havent been able to find anything like a
    chassis mount for them.
What do you all use for a weatherproof equivalent to Powerpoles?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 11:39 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1lj2a/can_high_rf_exposure_cause_disorientation_and/

I was transmitting on 6m at 100 watts with a random piece of wire to see
how the antenna tuner works at full power inside my house. I stopped when I felt a little nausea and disoriented. Yes, I am aware that this was a dumb
and bad idea. submitted by /u/joe_rt

    Please help out a noob

    Posted: 11 Jan 2022 09:49 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/s1yrg0/please_help_out_a_noob/

Hello, To preface, I know nothing about ham radios, radio theory, etc. Im hoping to get some advice from anyone who can answer my question. I want a radio that can scan my local emergency frequencies. I know that most LE agencies have switched over to digital, so it would be great if you could recommend a model that monitors analog and digital if thats an option. Ive considered getting a police scanner, but I like the idea of being able to transmit in the event of an emergency. A couple of years ago, we had a two
day county-wide outage that knocked out internet, cell service, and
landline. Since then, Ive wanted some alternative means of communications
for emergencies. Ill consider any device thats portable and within ~ $700. Thanks in advance.
