Cheapest way to work SSB satellites given what I already own?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 08:51 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxz1se/cheapest_way_to_work_ssb_satellites_given_what_i/

I want to work satellites but I want to spend as little as possible. Not counting antennas because I know all my options as far thats concerned.
My current thought is to use either a transverter with my HF radio or use
an upconverter with my HF radio for uplink and use an SDR which i already
own for receive. Second option is probably better since its cheaper and
with a duplexer I can have have full duplex so I can verify my
transmission. Do you have any suggestions for transverters/upcomverters?
    Any other options?
SDR that can transmit plus an an amplifier? Any suggestions for hardware to fulfill that?
Any input is appreciated. Thanks. submitted by /u/spacestationfreedom

A really odd (and pretty dumb) hypothetical

    Posted: 07 Jan 2022 01:12 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ry3bmv/a_really_odd_and_pretty_dumb_hypothetical/

So I’ve been thinking about the Doppler Effect for some reason.
My question is this: If I stuck a pure sine wave signal generator with
antenna onto a really fast conveyor belt, and moved the conveyor belt
really quickly according to an input signal (such as audio), could that be
a ridiculously impractical way to accomplish FM transmission? Note that the signal generator has no electrical connection to the conveyor belt.
Sorry, this is what happens when it’s 3:00 AM and I can’t sleep submitted by /u/Professor_Stank

Fldigi plays solid tone on RTTY over Signalink to KX3. Help!

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 05:59 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxvjd9/fldigi_plays_solid_tone_on_rtty_over_signalink_to/

I am trying to do different digital modes on a KX3, using a raspberry pi
with Fldigi and a Signalink sound card. I can connect to the radio using
Flrig or rigCAT and change the frequency and operating mode just fine, and
can trigger the PTT through Fldigi just fine. In my settings, Ive made sure that Fldigi recognizes USB audio codec, and Ive even successfully done
PSK31and JT8 through WSJT-X on this raspberry pi.
The issue occurs when trying to transmit anything over RTTY. Ive tried AFSK
and FSK data modes on the KX3, tried changing audio levels, automatic gain,
you name it. I just cant get anything besides a solid tone to transmit, including when calling CQ. If anyone has any ideas Id really appreciate
    it. submitted by /u/epicmylife

    Good evening,
I am sorry to inform everyone that Mike VK3AVV/VK3JV passed away this afternoon, Wednesday January 5th after a long illness.
I have spoken with Mikes wife, Tammy and she has asked that all members of

    in the club.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be made, but it is likely to be a private religious affair and with covid restrictions. When further details are available, I will notify the members.

    Ft-70+Winlink possible?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 10:08 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ry0hoj/ft70winlink_possible/

I have a Mobilinkd TNC3, trying to set up the Winlink, but it is not
working. Not transmitting anything that I can hear, listening on another
    radio.
    https://mobilinkd.s3.amazonaws.com/TNC3/MobilinkdTNC3.pdf has the
instructions I was trying. I have added to /etc/ax25/axports
    wl2k CALLSIGN 9600 255 7 Winlink
    sudo kissattach /dev/ttyACM1 wl2k
Then use "AX25" in Pat (using "pat http" to get to the localhost:8080 web interface)
It simply tries connecting... Unable to establish connection to remote:
    Dial timeout
and I hear absolutely nothing on another radio to the ft-70 frequency. Even
    in audio adjust mode.
Yes I have set 48) option powersave to off, set the multiplex as is needed
for Yaesu radio... looking in the document link above I see
" 9600 baud cannot be used on radios that only support voice operation
(pre- emphasized and de-emphasized audio). There are no HTs known to
support 9600 baud that do not already have their own TNCs built in, and
these generally do not support operating at 9600 baud with an external TNC." Does this mean there is no way to get USb-serial connection to get Winlink working with this TNC? submitted by /u/LukeHere

Less featured transceivers allow me to feel the problems in my antenna

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 01:57 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxaxwf/less_featured_transceivers_allow_me_to_feel_the/

I have been operating my FT-857D ($1000) with an off-center-fed dipole
(through a commercial 6:1 balun) for quite a while. I didn’t think there
was any problem in my antenna system until I connected my new QCX Mini
    ($50) to the antenna.
My QCX mini terribly screamed through the earphones while I transmitted
even if I turn the volume down to zero. The problem became worse when the
    coax cable close to metal.
Eventually I realized this was caused by common mode current. So I added a
1:1 current balun or a choke (simply winding the coax cable a few turns on
a ferrite toroid). Then, problem solved.
I never suggest QCX mini is not a good rig. (Instead, I love it, use it a
lot and it’s one of the most popular QRP CW rigs). But FT-857D must have
some feature (by spending more money?) to reduce the impact from common
mode current. This feature has blinded me from seeing the problem of my antenna: NO CURRENT BALUNS, NO GOOD DIPOLES.

In Winlink Express my Messages Go Out But Never Reach Their Destination

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 06:27 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxw4ba/in_winlink_express_my_messages_go_out_but_never/

Winlink Express appears to "work" but silently fails. Messages seem to go
into the bit bucket. Installed Winlink Express on a Windows 10 laptop. I
went through the setup page to provide my name, call sign, and other info
just fine. I can authenticate to the winlink webmail GUI without issue.
Im sending email from Winlink Express via telnet, so that I know its
working over the wire before I start transmitting over the air. Thats one
less point of failure I need to worry about. Email posted to my outbox
appears to go out and gets moved to my "sent" mail when I start a Winlink session. Everything appears to work, but two things tipped me off that something isnt quite right: If I send from my call sign to my call sign
the message goes out but never shows back up in my inbox. If I look for my
call sign or any of the message IDs, in the US Amateur Radio Message Viewer
    I cant find them.
In both cases Im checking several hours after sending which eliminates any reasonable MTA delay server-side. This is truly strange. Looking at the
logs Im not seeing an obvious error. Has anyone had this happen before? Any idea how I can fix this? submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa

    PPT Semi/Professional Earpiece Advice

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 11:50 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxn92r/ppt_semiprofessional_earpiece_advice/

I run a production company and one of our primary clients is a dirt bike
racing series. We use some decently high quality handsets and they work as
good as could be expected for covering ~10miles of woods. The biggest issue
we have is that is often loud, and cheap earpieces suck. So they either
break, dont last, or are terrible quality in general. I would consider
getting molded ones, or military style ones but am having a hard time find resources and information on them. Most teams in our space use over the ear headsets which I dont think would work well for us and if we lose some
noise isolation as a result thats fine as well. We just really want
something that will last a season, that could give us solid quality and
would be at least semi nice. Any advice or suggestions? submitted by /u/iamjager

    Good SWR with no antenna?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 04:29 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxtjz1/good_swr_with_no_antenna/

So I have an IC 7300 connected to a manual tuner, which is connected to a
9:1 unun up about 25 feet through a 50 ft feedline. There is a counterpoise wire hanging off the ground terminal of hte unun. Some time this week, the radiating wire was torn free of the unun. However, Im still seeing 1.5:1
SWR on both the tuner and my radio after tuning. Im not radiating much according to PSK reporter. So whats absorbing all that energy from the
radio? is the feed line or the counterpoise radiating instead? Im assuming
this is ultimately harmful to the radio, tuner, or unun in some way.

    Help with audio isolation

    Posted: 06 Jan 2022 01:07 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rxp0gh/help_with_audio_isolation/

Edit: The two sources shared a common ground and hence the problem. Thanks subreddit!
I built a circuit using a foot switch to switch between different sources
of audio to my headphones when using my HF radio. In this setup the audio normally travels from a source (filter box or SDR/PC outputting sound from
my radio) to my headphones. Due to different reasons depending on the
situation (my MFJ filter screams when I transmit or the latency from the
SDR confuses me when I transmit) I would like audio straight from the rig
when transmitting (such as sidetone). So it works, I depress the pedal and
the sound gets switched. Maybe even some day Ill make it automatic with a relay.
But.. my problem is that I still get some of the original audio bleeding through. Im new to this but am doing a big Mouser order soon. Should I be looking to get something like an optocoupler, or something else, to help isolate these signals in the SPDT foot switch itself? Thanks so much!
