Welcome to 2022 (almost)! Most every year we try to post an amateur radio resolutions thread. So, what are your 2022 radio-related resolutions? What radio-related activities are you most looking forward to?
If you were involved in previous years, please let us know how you did. If youre new, welcome aboard! Please post what you would like to accomplish
    with amateur radio.
I made the mistake of jinxing all of 2021 by asking about "post-covid
plans" last year. I wont be doing that again. Yes, its all my fault. 2021 resolutions

Trying to find out if my grandfather was a ham, and find out what his
callsign was if he was one.

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 05:25 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rshta4/trying_to_find_out_if_my_grandfather_was_a_ham/

My grandfather recently passed away and I had recently got my tech license before he passed. I got to tell him about it and he was pretty excited. He
told me how he used to have antennas up in his attic to listen in on everything. I imagine all that listening motivated him to get his license
but I imagine it expired long ago. I didnt think to ask him.
Are there any resources I can use to maybe search for his callsign if he
    had one?

Tool for decrypting Yaesu firmware images

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 12:14 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rsb03x/tool_for_decrypting_yaesu_firmware_images/

I posted last week a plaintext firmware image for the Yaesu FT-70D and mentioned Id do a blog writeup and release a tool to decrypt the firmware
on your own once I understood their encryption... well that time has come! Technical blog post detailing the encryption and how I reverse engineered
    it: https://landaire.net/reversing-yaesu-firmware-encryption/
    Tool: https://github.com/landaire/porkchop
So far this has successfully produced plaintext images for the FT-70D_ver111(USA).exe, FT-70D_ver111(EXP).exe, and
FT2D_MAIN_ver310(USA).exe firmware update utilities. It should work on
similar firmware updaters for other Yaesu radios/versions. submitted by /u/anxxa

    EFHW and wire follow up

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 04:27 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rsgn84/efhw_and_wire_follow_up/

To combine two posts I recently made. My 1,000ft of 20 awg showed up today
    from All electronics.

I replaced the wire that Id tossed into the tree 2 days ago with this, tightened up the tuning and Im well under 1.8 swr across the band on both
20 and 40 and under 1.5 on 40. Last night, I got England from Texas on JS8
on 4 watts. Right now Im on Js8 on 40 rocking and rolling.

The wire seems good. Nice strands, nice jacket. Pulled and stripped easy.

Im using a QRP guys single band EFHW kit with 65 up in a tree. I have not
done a ground or counterpoise yet. Still playing around.

But for $50 for a ton of wire and $18 for a single band kit (and a $160
DR4020 digital radio), Im pretty happy thus far submitted by /u/noone512

    2 meter yagi build

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 09:26 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rsmeec/2_meter_yagi_build/

Ive been doing a lot of reading on small VHF and UHF yagis lately. While
there are several articles telling you what to do, they dont always tell
you HOW they got there, and building is always more satisfying than buying.
I realize there are many variables in yagi design, and it gets complicated quick. The best I can tell, you start with a slightly long 1/2 wave dipole, elements spaced .12-.25 wavelengths apart, with element sizes tapering by
    about 5%.
I want to build a small (3-4) element yagi centered around the lower end of
the band for SSB/CW/Digital. The reason is that, I want to keep it small
and simple for my first build, and Id like to try the aforementioned modes
on 2m, but have limited room for now (apartment balcony) Which is why I
want a relatively small beam. I currently have a dipole I made out of my homebrew 2 meter ground plane. Its netted me some FT8 action, and Id really like to try the January VHF contest.
The plans Ive seen for smaller yagis are all centered around the FM portion (146 or so), with no mention of altering the dimension for the lower part
of the band. The yagis Ive seen for the lower part of the band are all 6 elements or more, and are a bit big for an apartment setup. In addition,
Ive been playing with a free copy of EZNEC. After altering a different
design I came up with something that looks good on paper. But, when I punch
in the details from some of the articles Ive read and do an SWR sweep, it
looks terrible, which makes me question if the "design" I came up with will even work in the real world. (Ive used EZNEC by trial and error, and
noticed none of the demo yagi designs had any mention of impedance matching
    the driven element).
So with that said, any ideas for small yagis centered around the low end of
2 meters? Any tips on using EZNEC or do I just need to read the damn
    manual? submitted by /u/SonicResidue

Legal distance to transmit with rpitx without a distance and how to reduce
    it

    Posted: 31 Dec 2021 01:26 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rsq5lb/legal_distance_to_transmit_with_rpitx_without_a/

Hi. Recently Ive been playing with rpitx, a radio transmitter for the
Raspberry Pi. I was sending some pocsag messages (just for testing
purposes) when I asked myself if its legal to do it and if I would get in trouble for doing it. Ive read somewhere on a thread that the maximum
distance you can transmit without a license is 200 ft (60 m).

I want to know what is the maximum distance I can transmit with my
Raspberry Pi and how to reduce it if its not legal.

I did my tests at 153-154 MHZ and for a short period of time (2-3 seconds
per message) with a piece of wire that is 12.5 cm long

I’ve recently made some friends on simplex. Every time the QSO goes on for more than a few Transmissions on my side, my VX-6 gets warm. I wouldn’t
call it hot, but it definitely gets pretty warm. I’ve seen some people on forums say that’s supposed to happen, but I was just wondering your guy’s opinion.
I’ll probably email Yaesu as well. submitted by /u/Midnight_man_

Why are antenna tuners not able to work with certain modes?

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 10:12 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rs84zu/why_are_antenna_tuners_not_able_to_work_with/

I would assume that they handle low bandwidth modes better as they list CW
and SSB, but data modes can also transmit very small bandwidth signals.
Just curious on what’s limiting these antenna tuners from working data
modes at the same power output levels as CW/SSB? Thanks. submitted by /u/joe_rt

A couple quick questions about the icom 706

    Posted: 30 Dec 2021 12:24 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rsb8t9/a_couple_quick_questions_about_the_icom_706/

Ive got my radio setup in a 4U gator case, and my next project is to build
a Raspberry Pi into it to start playing with digital. Ive not worked
digital with this radio before, so I have a couple questions:
Does connecting to the 13-pin accessory port prevent "normal" voice mode
via the built-in speaker and front panel mic jack? Like, can I leave the
radio running all night to catch SSTV signals, then just spin the dial and start talking on SSB? The manual says something about not having two microphones plugged into both the rear jack and the faceplate jack, but
nothing about having one mic and the accessory port plugged in.
What do you think of this mystery meat thing? Its apparently electrically similar to KF5INZs Easy Digi circuit but pre-made and with a USB-serial converter for PTT. The latter apparently uses a Prolific chip, which may or
may not function in Linux because USB-serial converters are always iffy.
Its a third the cost of a SignaLink, is the point. submitted by /u/new_refugee123456789
