    Pay to play DX??

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 12:20 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rp4vp8/pay_to_play_dx/

Ive been working steadily on my DXCC (DX Click Club) with FT8 .. (FT8 is
great for meetings) and I notice a familiar call from Suriname .. sure
enough Ive worked him, weeks ago, but hes not confirmed via LOTW even
though hes flagged LOTW. Ok, so I go his QRZ page and I see this:
Due to certain problems with LOTW I will NOT upload my full logs anymore to LOTW. For OQRS and Paypal users I will continue to upload to LOTW.
For a LOTW confirmation do a log search on my call at Clublog and follow
the instructions or you can send a donation of 5 Euros via Paypal to [EMAIL REMOVED].
    https://www.qrz.com/lookup/PZ5RA
Ive never seen anything like this .. I guess either I pay the 5EUR or scrub
the QSO from my log ...
Seems not in the spirit of ham radio .. ? Or is it? submitted by /u/leonine_lion

I’m curious to what degree it might be described, is the difference in propagation with a vehicle in motion compared to the same portable rig stationary at home? Is it more difficult to “stay with a conversation” while in transit? submitted by /u/Stargazer12am

Is there a way to broadcast SSTV on Kenwood to-v71a?

I’m seeing mixed answers online so I figured I ask the experts myself.
I can’t seem to find any way to interface my radio with my pc aside from
the $80 “EchoLink” cables sold by Kenwood. Can I just plug a 6 pin mini din to usb cable into my pc and expect it to work with MMSSTV software?

I got a radio for Christmas and I have no idea what to do with it, please
    help!

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 03:02 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rp87dk/i_got_a_radio_for_christmas_and_i_have_no_idea/

So even though I have never expressed an interest in getting a HAM I was somehow given one for Christmas. I am utterly clueless about radios so I
dont really know what to do with it, and even if I did I wouldnt know how!
The only thing I do know is that dont want to transmit as I talk to people online anyway and I dont have a license.
Instead, Ive been trying to find things to listen to but I cant seem to
find anything - All I can pick up is static and scary noises (I think the signal is too weak?), with the exception of a signal from the nearby
airport which appears to be an automated voice reporting on the runway
weather condition. If someone could point me in the right direction thatd
be great! For reference, I live in the UK and the radio is a Baofeng

Accidentally updated the firmware for my AT-D878UVIIPlus to an AT-D878UV
(Ver. 1.26) and I can't go back. Can any of you big brain types help me?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 10:52 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rp37nr/accidentally_updated_the_firmware_for_my/

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
So, I am very hopeful that someone here can help me. Let me preface this by saying that I am a tragic victim of my own stupidity, here.
So, I received two 878UVIIPluss for Xmas and they were working fine, but
after I charged them I was getting a Rx light and signal, but no sound.
In my extremely finite wisdom I though it would be a great idea to update
the firmware to the latest version. So, from the Wouzun.us website I
installed the firmware on one of them, but it was late at night and I didnt realize that the FW I installed was the 878UV package and not the latest 878UVIIplus .spi.
So I effectively turned my brand new 878IIplus into a 878UV.
NOW, when I try to install FW ver. 2.04 878UVII Plus.spi from the 878UV CPS (Version 1.26, cause thats my radio software now) it says "Model Error:
878UV". If I use the CPS for the 878UVII (Version 2.04)...it also
    says "Model Error: 878UV".
How on earth do I write the correct firmware back on to my radio? Ive been
at this for hours, and at this point Im looking for a Christmas miracle.

Does anyone have a reference or a link to turning a rubber ducky Omni
    antenna into a yagi?

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 08:02 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rozpmu/does_anyone_have_a_reference_or_a_link_to_turning/

A few years ago I saw a website that was demonstrating how to use styrofoam
or cardboard with stiff copper wire to turn a rubber ducky antenna or a
omni directional antenna until yagi have sorts. You have a reflector
element and the other elements which whose names I cant remember.
Did I dream this or does anybody know about it?

    FT-991A firmware

    Posted: 26 Dec 2021 02:46 AM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/rounj6/ft991a_firmware/

    Hi All,
Ive just got an FT-991A which has an official wideband mod by a Yaesu
    dealer.
    Firmware versions:
    Main: V01-06
    DSP: V01-09
    TFT: V01-01
    C4FM: V04-15
I realise that the main firmware isnt the latest but I cant find any
release notes for what the new versions do.
Would it be any benefit to upgrade to the latest firmware?
    Thanks all.

Question About Ham Related Advertising - "Ya ever notice..."

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 02:04 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/roihql/question_about_ham_related_advertising_ya_ever/

New ham as of last year. I was looking through the ARRL monthly magazine
and noticed that none of the ads show a lifestyle or anything aspirational
or fun, its just sterile photos of equipment. Sometimes clouds in the background.
Atv ads have guys riding in the woods, car ads show twisty empty coastal
roads, soap ads show people cleaning up, booze ads show people partying,
Viagra and medicine ads show old guys dancing it up with their wives,
etc... Radio ads just show the equipment. Is that the point? Just the equipment?
Is there anything cool you can do, or is it really just the stereotype of
angry old guys looking for perceived technical violations to complain
about? Im not judging, Im asking seriously submitted by /u/Terrible_Painting_20

    Posted: 25 Dec 2021 12:49 PM PST https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/roh65o/never_used_ham_radio_before_but_i_have_a_new/

Id only like to receive. I do not intend to broadcast anything. What would
be a good set up to start with that has a large bandwidth range?
Price isnt totally important as I could shop around different models anyway
but any replys would give a starting point, at least.
Edit: Also learning about radio and some terms. Im basically a 5 year old
in the sense that this is new to me.
Edit #2: Wow! thank you all for your answers! It definitely helps me stay focused on what brands and models are worth the purchase. submitted by /u/Im_ur_Uncle_
