    F-150 mobile radio power source

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 05:31 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1lueg/f150_mobile_radio_power_source/

I’m in the planning stages of setting up a mobile radio for my F-150. It
has two 12v outlets and two 400w AC outlets in the cab. Ive read more than
a few posts recommending against powering a mobile radio off a 12v outlet
due to RF interference issues and it seems to be usually recommended to run
a dedicated 12v circuit from the battery. What if I just plug a power
supply into one of the AC outlets and the radio into the power supply?
Would I still run into a lot of RF interference that way?
I’m not against running a dedicated 12v line from the battery to the cab, I’m just trying to think of the easiest way to get power with the least amount of mods to the truck. submitted by /u/Activision19

    What is a "Radio Tree"?

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 07:55 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1oot4/what_is_a_radio_tree/

Ive heard the term used lately in the context of emergency preparedness. Searched for some information on it but found nothing. Can anyone
    explain? submitted by /u/Gnarlodious

40M dipole, question about static buildup and appropriate way to discharge
    it.

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 06:53 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1nh33/40m_dipole_question_about_static_buildup_and/

Im about to erect my first proper antenna, a dipole for 40M (approx 10m on
each leg) and Im concerned about static buildup and Im confused about the
most appropriate solution to negate it. I need to get a reality check on
what Im planning to do and whether its correct and most importantly, safe.
My QTH is a reasonably high-wind area most of the time.
The dwelling is brick veneer and the dipole is supported by three (centre
and one at each end of the house) J-mount/hockey stick TV antenna mounts clamped to extendable galvanised tent/tarp poles that will extend up about
2m each. Paracord goes via a pulley at the top of the pole and down to a
cleat to allow the antenna to be lowered or tensioned easily.
The J-mounts will be secured via wall plugs and masonry screws to the
    external brick wall.
    The centre connector is a 50mm PVC tee-piece: https://www.bunnings.com.au/holman-50mm-press-pvc-plain-tee_p3142384
Inside the tee is a CM choke balun made from 8 wraps of RG58 around a
    FT140-61 toroid: http://vk6ysf.com/balun_choke_balun_hf.htm
Feedline will be several metres of RG213 connected to a SO239 on the bottom
of the dipoles centre connector and then a short RG58 BNC pigtail at the transceiver end for ease of use.
The cable will simply run through an open window at this stage. When not in use, the cable will be covered to protect from the weather and will hang outside the window on the outside of the house.
Transceiver will be a QRP rig, either homebrew CW kits or a small QRP SSB
unit (truSDX actually) with all devices being battery powered. No mains connections or DC supply at this stage. Foundation licensee (10W PEP max)
with no plans to upgrade or go to a big rig (FT991 or 7300) or other bands
or anything like that. Just focusing on getting on the air and QRP CW on
    40M for now.
When not in use, I can easily make a connector to short the 2 ends of the dipole. However, Im still concerned about static from the entire dipole as
it still wont be connected to ground. When I touch it, it may discharge to ground through me. Im also concerned about static buildup whilst using the dipole while connected to a transceiver.
From what I have been reading, I think there are 2 things I should do here: Connect a high ohm resistor (say 1M) across the 2 arms of the dipole, or
where the feedline connects to the transceiver.
Connect the shield of the RG213 feedline via an inductor to a ground rod.
This could be done via panel mount where the RG213 connects to the RG58 pigtail.
At no point am I planning to connect anything to my mains ground via the
houses power points unless that device happens to have a ground pin via the supplied power cord.
Can you please give me a sanity check on whether this is legitimate and
safe? If you need more detail on my setup, Im happy to provide it and I appreciate any help or advice you can give me.
NOTE: I dont mention any lightning protection as I wont be using the
antenna during storms and the feedline wont be inside the house when not in use. If this is a serious oversight, Im happy to be schooled. Im in VK3 and
we rarely get lightning and normally only in spring and early summer.

    Xiegu G90 or the RS-918 (RS-978) ??

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 06:00 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1mec2/xiegu_g90_or_the_rs918_rs978/

    Hi Hams.
I am. thinking of getting a small radio for both use at home and a little portable. I realise both radios I have listed within the title are QRP. I
think that for a guy on a budget, they might be okay for me as I will
likely delve into CW and a little SSB.
From what I can gather, both radios share similar features, with the
exception of the G90 having a tuner. Some variants of the RS-918 have an optional, built-in battery.
I have also considered the Xiegu X6100, but there seems to be at least a
few negative reviews, indicating small issues like possible overheating,
odd tuning steps, and strange behaviour in battery display on some
    power-ups.
I know there are better radios, but they are outside my budget. I know
there are nice Yaesu radios to be had (with more power), but the 891 has negative reviews, and some other models have tiny screens, lacking cool features like waterfall displays, etc.

    Any thoughts? submitted by /u/GreatBigPig

    Weird Buzzing On Transmit

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 04:13 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1k8yr/weird_buzzing_on_transmit/

Alright Im getting a weird buzzing on my IC-706, symptoms:
Recorded buzz I hear: https://vocaroo.com/19N3zTPp6hXp at 2/5/H power
settings, buzz tracks with power usage SS-30DV Power Supply RR/4005
58312-1039 (tried straight from SS-30DV, no difference) It happens if I use
my hand-mic or key with my digirig (unplugged my mic during the digirig tranmission) Happens if Im using the headphone output or the built-in
speaker People report my tranmission sounds terrible and Im barely understandable Appears to only happen on 2m Doesnt happen on 70cm Didnt
happen on 6m/15m on Field Day (forgot to check 2m in the field/on battery) Turned off all computers/lights/etc. in the house Disabled all UPSes, ran straight off the wall Receive is fine Swapped antennas and feed lines, no difference G707 works fine on the same feed line and antenna
Things Ive yet to test: I have a RS-12A I can pull downstairs and deploy
to test, kind of annoying to lug it around so havent gotten that far yet No good way to provide battery-only power that isnt pulling the UPS (which
means its still making A/C power)
Im starting to worry its the radio and its suddenly had some part give up
the ghost but what failing would be causing only 2m to have a buzz?
Radio just started randomly doing this like a month or so ago.
    Edit 1:
Hmm, may have lied on the G707, Im getting a buzz on it too, but didnt get report of audio issues on the net, will confirm in a moment.
    Edit 2:
I get the buzz on my headset but no claimed report issues, Ill check the
706 to see if my audio is clear on that.
    Edit 3:
Looks like /u/wxfreak is onto something -- the RS-12A doesnt exhibit this problem, aaa. I need the 30a for both radios.
    Solution:
So the SS-30DV 115v/220v switch can be stuck off-mode, it was slightly off
of the "115v" position, re-seating the switch fixed it. No more awful
    buzz. submitted by /u/StrangeWill
