After experiencing disappointing results with a portable 12-volt jump-start lead-acid battery at Field Day this year, I designed and assembled a
LiFePO4 battery box. Some club members liked my relatively simple and inexpensive design and asked me to do a write up on it.

balun versus unun - differences in their internal construction and circuitry

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 10:17 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1cc4o/balun_versus_unun_differences_in_their_internal/

I understand how a balun is used differently from an unun, and the BALanced
to UNbalanced reasons for their names, but Im struggling to understand how
the two devices actually differ beyond the type of external connector thats used. When comparing a 4:1 balun to a 4:1 unun, arent they both simply
toroids with an appropriate ratio of primary and secondary turns? Is there
some important difference in the circuit schematic that I overlooked?
I found this Instructable that says the only difference is how you connect
the feedline. So with an external adapter you can turn a balun into an unun
    or vice-versa.
But Ive seen other discussions that imply theyre not interchangeable, there
is some difference in how the transformer is wired, but I dont know the details. submitted by /u/blinkybit

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 09:37 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w1bg8h/icom_ic737_problem/

Im having a problem with my hf rig and hoping someone on here could lead me
in the right direction. I noticed last night while on 40m when I would transmit, my radio was only putting out about 50 watts (100 watt
transceiver) and my display was dimming. Tried other frequencies and its
doing it on all bands. But if I turn my power supply up to 15v, the problem goes away. Display stays bright and output is back to 100 watts. Any ideas?
Im thinking it may be time to replace capacitors on the 30 years old rig
but wanted some input of anyone who would know more than me. submitted

    New Station Setup

    Posted: 17 Jul 2022 06:35 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w17kg3/new_station_setup/

Finally getting around to setting up my shack in a new house, and wanted to
see if you guys had any advice or opinions.
My plan for the antennas is to run down the siding of the house onto an
outdoor grounding block and then through some conduit that an electrician
buddy is going to punch through an existing foundation hole that we have no idea what it’s there for (confirmed not in use). That’ll bring the feed lines into the basement. From there, we have beautiful nearly 100 year old
hard wood floors that I don’t particularly want to drill multiple LMR-400/RG-8X sized holes through. Though, I do have partner approval if
that ends up being the solution.
My current thought process is to get radios that can either run remotely or have a remote head. We ran CAT 5/6 cable throughout the house and my shack location has 4 runs, only 2 of which are in regular use. I’m thinking right now about a Flex 6400 and either an Icom 2730A or a Yaesu FTM-200DR. I’ve seen some people who make a cable to go from the RG12 face plate connector
to a RG45 to go through a patch panel, then just run the mic straight
through since it’s already RG45. Anyone have any experience with this or tips?
Anything I’m not considering that I should be? Mostly looking for advice on having radios in the basement that can be operated from upstairs. Although being able to operate remotely (such as the Flex) is a huge plus given that
    I travel 15+ days a month. submitted by /u/ntilley905

UV-5R APRS cable doesn't work well, worth building a homemade TNC-duino?

I have aprsdroid and the btech APRS cable but its still very hit and miss (mostly miss) whether I can actually get a packet out. I even set up my own igate with an sdr-rtl+gqrx+direwolf to test it and its still mostly fail (I
get lots of packets from the local digipeater so I got that going for me).
I have most of the bits and most of the skill to build an arduino based tnc like this one https://www.vk3dan.ninja/2017/08/03/homebrew-aprs-arduino-uno-kiss-tnc/ but
I question where it will actually be worth it just to avoid the vox issues given the general-not-so greatness of the radio itself.
Itd be a fun project but Id prefer it not end with complete disappointment. What are your thoughts? Thanks.
P.S. sorry if this should be in r/baofeng instead. I thought it was far
enough removed from just a discussion of the radio to make the grade in
    here. submitted by /u/charlieb

I’ve called up 4 separate repeaters, and have gotten nothing back other
than an automated morse code signal on 3 of them. The one that I cant even
get a signal on, is the only repeater I’ve heard activity on. This repeater every weekday morning they have a net, but Im a bit nervous about the
thought of keying up when the net operator asks if there’s anyone else who wants to join in.
And my radio cant even reach that repeater. I’ve used a scanner (legal in
my state) to listen to the repeater before i got my radio, and I’ve tried calling on my radio and trying to hear myself on the output, but i never
    can hear it.
On top of the repeater calls, I’ve also made a handful of CQ calls on the national calling frequency on 2m and 70cm, with no response. And these were from 40/50 feet above the ground on our farm’s corn dryer setup. I would
key up during the net but these all seem to be very experienced operators,
and they all know each other on a first name basis. And i don’t want to
make a fool of myself keying up but not knowing all the “radio lingo” they they’re using.
    Any suggestions? submitted by /u/jason-murawski

Passed my exams on field day and am slowly getting it together. Its 108+
every day here in SoCal, so Im Baofenging my local repeater until it cools down. Great bunch of hams out here. Luckily I live 7/10ths of a mile from
    the repeater.
I managed to snag 64 of surplus masts and 500 of antenna wire. Want to
start with an inverted V for 40 meters, but might just string up separate
40, 20, and 10 m wires on the same pole. Will see how the 40 m resonates
first. Either way, its going to be awhile before it cools down enough and I
get my HF radio. That said, I got a Nano network analyzer, so I may have my antenna all set up and tuned before I get a transceiver.
Diggin amateur radio already. Glad to be a part of the ham community. Will
post my call sign when I get my vanity sign, as I dont want to spread a
sign that will change soon. 73. submitted by /u/HamRadioDad
