Within the hobby, that is. What, if anything in particular, would you like
to have accomplished before your key goes silent?
Personally, Id like to have my callsign attached to something at least moderately successful. Be it an antenna design, a digimode, some kind of accessory or what have you. Obviously its unfeasible to become a household
name like G5RV, but something on a much smaller scale ought to be doable. submitted by /u/SA0TAY

    Anyone have a RigPi?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2022 07:19 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vxccvc/anyone_have_a_rigpi/

Im interested in the idea of the MFJ-1234 RigPi server for remotely
operating my radios. I have a Kenwood TS-590SG and a TS-2000. Would like to hear from someone who has used one extensively.
EDIT: To clear things up ... I am not looking for a Raspberry Pi with a
bunch of disparate apps on it for ham radio. I am interested in an
appliance approach for controlling my radios remotely that just works, and
the marketing info around the MFJ device sounds good. Im just looking for someone whos really used it to firm up whether the thing meets
    expectations. submitted by /u/Prima13

    Hello r/amateurradio
Im looking for a new HT to replace my old Baofeng UV5R, and I was hoping
you guys could give me some reccomendations.
Im looking for at least 2 meter / 70 cm, and reception around 160 MHz for weather band, and 460 MHz for EMS, as well as being somewhat water resistant/proof as it can rain here quite a lot. As for the
speaker/microphone connector, I need it to either use: Kenwood 2 Pin,
Motorla XTS or Motorola APX style connectors.
Do you guys know of any radios that fit the bill here? submitted by

Guide to getting started with ham radio

    Posted: 12 Jul 2022 01:24 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vxkoce/guide_to_getting_started_with_ham_radio/

Hello! Ive seen some posts asking about getting started with ham radio recently, and I thought this guide might help.
The first thing you need to do if you want to start doing ham radio is to
get a license. There are three license classes offered at the moment: Technician, General, and Amateur Extra. To get a license, you have to
prepare and take a test, either remotely or at a local testing session. As
to which you should try and get, it depends on what you want to do. If you mainly just want to talk locally to other hams in the area, go with
technician to start. If you want to talk to stations around the world, go
with general, since it will give you access to all the HF bands.
The tests arent that hard, but they do require you to put effort and time
into studying. Most places charge about 15$ for the test (and you can do
tech and general at the same time for the same price, provided you do well
on your tech first,) and the FCC charges 35 dollars for new licenses. To
study, I recommend using online tools such as hamexam.org or hamstudy.org,
and a book. KN6NU offers a terrific and free pdf tech license study book,
just make sure to get the 2022 edition. You can also buy the ARRL books, or those "ham no spam" ones (which I recommend) and once again be sure to get
2022 version for tech. I recommend reading the book and then taking some practice tests until you are consistently passing. This might also be a
good time to join a local ham club, and Im sure they could help you start
    out.
After you pass your test, youll get your callsign and will have taken your first step into the world of radio! Once you have your ticket, your gonna
need a radio. I recommend buying yourself a Baofeng UV54 for 30$. They get
a lot of hate around here, and I agree they have a lot of problems, but
they are cheap, and they get the job done for talking to people locally. If vhf/uhf (local communication) is your main goal, maybe treat yourself to a better radio, such as a mobile rig from a named company, but youll also
need a power supply for that.
If you are also interested in using HF to talk to people all around, this
is a little more pricy, but do not fret! The best solution for getting an
HF rig without breaking the bank is to talk to people in your local club or around, someone will probably have an old radio lying around that theyd be happy to give to you as a gift or for a little bit of money. These radios
are confusing, difficult to use, and are terrible for beginners, but with a
bit of practice and some help from some friendly plate-dippers, Im sure you
can figure it out. You could also go and buy a modern radio, I recommend getting yourself a portable rig, like a yaesu ft-891, this is great because
it is great for hiking with and bringing in a bag, or operating as a base station. Youll also need a power supply for this, so in total, it would run
you about 800-1000 dollars, without an antenna.
There are many types of antennas, but if you have the space for it, set up
a wire antenna. A home made mono-band dipole is very cheap and easy to
make, but this will only get you onto one band. I recommend building
yourself an end fed half wave antenna, as it will be fun to build and very
easy to set up. I got a kit from the ARRL that cost me about 60$. Just make sure to get help from someone with an antenna analyzer to help you
optimally tune up your antenna. Alternatively, you can buy an antenna.
Again, end feds cant go wrong, so you can check out some different end feds
to buy online (they will be more expensive than homemade) but if you have
the space, set up a g5rv, its a great antenna. If you dont have space for a wire, get a hamstick. Theyre not the most efficient, and they get some
negative sentiment, but if set up well (aka mounted really high,) they will
do well. I have worked 13 different countries in the last 3 weeks with a hamstick on my balcony and an old radio from the 70s! They are mono banded,
so either get a few (I recommend 20 and 40 meters, then 15 and 10) or go
with one (probably go for 20 or 40). One stick will run you about 50$ with
a mount and some coax. As for HOW to talk on the radio, it will just come
with time and practice. Once you get a license, just start playing radio.
It doesnt matter if you sound funny at first, youll become an expert in no time. submitted by /u/minecraftlovingchild

    Interested in building/purchasing a beam antenna for 2m. Ive got 10w, 25w,
and 100w radio as options to use. Elevation is a bit of a challenge as my
roof is just at ground elevation as I live in a bit of a hole. Advantage is though that it is very flat around here. My question is will it be

    Hustler 6BTV vs inverted L w/ tuner

    Posted: 11 Jul 2022 09:44 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vwmwe1/hustler_6btv_vs_inverted_l_w_tuner/

I currently have an inverted L with the bend at 50-some feet and a tuner (SGC-237) at the base. I have an opportunity to purchase a used Hustler
6BTV at a reasonable price ($150). Is that antenna likely to give me
noticeably improved performance over the L, particularly when it comes to
DX? The Hustler would be erected in my back yard, which is not particularly higher or lower than the surrounding terrain (I live in a "streetcar
    suburb" of Kansas City).
Basically, Im asking if its worth the time and expense of buying and
    putting up. submitted by /u/popefelix

    Tuners for IC-705?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2022 08:30 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vwl65z/tuners_for_ic705/

While shopping at Ham Radio Outlet, after just passing General, I picked up
an IC-705 and had the Z-100A tuner recommended, as opposed to the Icom
    AH-705.
For the price difference this seemed reasonable enough, along with the advantage of "you can use it with another radio"... but not only does it
not have an interface cable for the IC-705 (included or available), it
would require 12V from the radio (not going to happen with a 7.4V nominal
pack) since it has no internal power source. I think itll work with my
FT-857D so its not a loss, but Im not super happy.
Does anyone have good suggestions on portable tuners for the IC-705, or
would it be "best" to just pay the Icom tax for the AH-705? Im aware of the Z-100 Plus.
Aside: It seems that LDG Electronics site is not-available, though some
links work if sourced via Google cached versions; Im unsure if something happened to LDG or not. submitted by /u/jadecristal

    Radio interfence?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2022 06:22 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vwibs4/radio_interfence/

I punched my general 2 years ago, not be able to afford a rig. was gifted a icon 7300 by my brother. I have been attempting to setup with an 66 efhw
that uses a balun and inductor. I have had severe issues, I have tried FT80
and only made 1 contact. The only stations\signals I can hear are from
Spanish radio stations. I can not even pickup WTWW 5.085 or its sisters on
    AM. I have tried 40m, 20m, 10m, and 80m. I have the antenna strung up to a
flag pole and across the roof. At this point I have yet dared to transmit though SWR are 2:1 or better higher 40m and up. I am thinking I have severe
RFI going on - and thought I am going to try and isolate my home.
I was wondering if the 300 tall 9000 Watt AM/FM radio tower that is 1700
feet away from our home could be causing an issue? Disregard the FT8 part
for now - I have poured over that with other HAMS online and all settings
are correct. I am a 25+ year IT consultant so the computer config and radio
are not an issue. I cant hear dang near anything. submitted by
