Incredible 20m ssb POTA activation yesterday. Worked more DX than I've ever worked in one POTA sitting. All strong RSTs too and all between 530p-830p Central. 1. Canada (3 ops) 2. Puerto Rico (2 ops) 3. Dominican Republic (2
    ops) 4. Venezuela (2 ops) 5. Spain (3 ops) 6. Italy (1 op).

    hi,
you can say.. that the OMs in my town are just that .. old man .. not necessarily by age, but they are stuck in there world, have absolutely no imagination beyond their way of doing things. It is annoying and
frustrating. I cant put up any antennas... so I am stuck to the repeaters
    on normal days.
Because I have "only" the little german licences ( Klasse e ) I am not
allowed on 20m (where the digital hub seems to be).. but only 10, 15, 80
    and 160.
Anyway.... I am new to this and have no experience. So I am just frustrated
and needed a place to vent.
before you write something with sarcasm, just vote this down and leave it
be.. I am close to give up this hobby for good, so I do not need any more negativity. Thank you .

Started working satellites recently and made my most memorable contact ever yesterday

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 04:49 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vvefw7/started_working_satellites_recently_and_made_my/

Due to a foot injury late last year I wasnt able to get out and "work the birds" as quick as I wanted to, so to start and understand how satellites sounded over the radio, I captured a few SSTV transmissions from the ISS
using my handheld scanner. Under a thick roof, they were meh to say the
    least.
Once I was able to start walking really well again (late May), I was gifted
a Arrow II Yagi, and I immediately got started!
Using my AnyTone D878UVII, I made a few contacts on the ISS and SO-50
repeaters (half duplex, I know...). One of my biggest difficulties was
figuring out how to log each contact. I tried recording my iPhone screen
and microphone which did nicely, but I wanted to hear and record full
    duplex.
Yesterday morning I did a dress rehearsal and managed to find a working solution on a basic budget. ISS was going to pass at 11:35 UTC and I
gathered my gear: my Arrow II Yagi, my AnyTone, my RadioShack PRO-164
    scanner, and Sony ICD-PX370 recorder.
Pass time was nearly here, I went outside and set everything up. Once the voices started getting clearer, I sent my call and grid square.
A noisy reception at first, but I got a response from Astronaut Kjell
Lindgren on NA1SS!! We made a quick exchange and I was shocked. Still cant comprehend how 10 watts managed to pick up so well on the ISS radios. Transmission recording if youre interested. submitted by /u/gl3nnjamin

NEC modeling of wire antennas with good directional gain

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 08:03 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vv3lgh/nec_modeling_of_wire_antennas_with_good/

I live on the California coast, and trying to improve my antenna gain to
the east for 20m so I can talk with the rest of North America better. For
now Im limiting myself to simple wire antennas that I can hang from trees
in the yard - no towers, masts, rigid elements, beams, or anything with a noticeable visual impact. This limits me to about 27 feet height above
ground. The tree canopy is dense, with wires running between branches, and
no open space for a hexbeam or anything like that.
Using CocoaNEC for Mac, Ive modeled different wire antenna types and orientations, trying to optimize for max gain at 0 degrees azimuth (east)
and 20 degrees elevation. Id appreciate a sanity check on my results.
My current antenna is an EFHW cut for 40m, but I usually run it on 20m. Its
an asymmetric dogleg with a center support, one long leg running NE from
the center, and the other short leg running WSW. NEC says this creates a
very sharp null directly to the east, as shown here. The gain at 0 azimuth
and 20 degrees elevation is about -13.1 dBi. Ouch!
dogleg 40m EFHW running on 20m
This doesnt really match my experience with the antenna. Performance to the east isnt great, but its not the worst. I can usually work the western
mountain states on SSB phone, depending on time of day. Rarely, I can reach
    the east coast.
I then used CocoaNEC to model other antennas and check the gain at 0
azimuth and 20 deg elevation. These were all modeled over "average"
ground. 20m dipole at 27 feet, running N-S: 4.7 dBi 20m full-wave inverted delta loop oriented N-S, with top span of the triangle at 27 feet and
bottom apex at 14 feet, fed at the top corner: 2.4 dBi 20m 1/4 wave ground mounted vertical with 12 radials: 2.0 dBi 20m sloper with the west end at
27 feet and east end at 4.5 feet: 0.4 dBi
Do those numbers sound plausible? Ive built variations of several of these.
The 20m N-S dipoles reception seemed about the same as my existing 40m EFHW with the null. A 20m N-S EFHW was very similar to the dipole. A 20m
vertical with 4 radials was far worse than the 40m EFHW, with less signal
and more noise. The 20m E-W sloper seemed the best of all, but only by a
small amount, for some eastern signals.
I was planning to build a delta loop next, since Ive read they have a reputation for low noise and low takeoff angles even when theyre not too
high above the ground. But based on these modeling results, Im not sure its worth it.
Any general advice on how to get the most out of antenna modeling with NEC,
or what kind of antenna might offer good directional gain to the east under these conditions? submitted by /u/blinkybit

Has anyone got experience with PiGateRMS and is willing to help me out, or
know someone who might be willing to help me out? I feel like Im just
    missing some simple config setting.
I bought a prebuilt unit from KD0QYN, and have struggled with it
constantly. He was kind enough to let me ship my radio, data cable, and
PiGate to him to test. He said it was working for him after a bit of
tweaking, and shipped it back to me.
When I received the unit, I have experienced exactly the same condition. I cannot get the radio to beacon, I cant get it to register with the Winlink system.
I have to figure that Im doing SOMETHING wrong, but reading the manual and following along, I cant see what.
I could really use some help, and Im hoping someone here knows something
about it, or knows someone who knows something about it who is willing to
look at my configs and help me figure out WTF Ive done wrong.

New Ham: looking for mobile suggestions

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 05:09 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vvetvi/new_ham_looking_for_mobile_suggestions/

    Hello friends,
I have had my technician license for a few months now after getting curious about the hobby. My main reasons for getting licensed were a) professional curiosity (Im an engineer in a different field) b) i like the outdoors and hike/bike/off road in remote places c) emergency preparedness SHTF communications.
Being new, i figured a h/t was all I needed to dip my toes in the water and
try it out. Ive made some repeater contacts and a few simplex. Normally
just like to listen in and occasionally hop on a net. I have a Baofeng
BFF8-HP 8w ht and it seems to do OK for my uses.
I recently went camping and was completely out of cell range but was able
to find a simplex contact and a distant repeater. With my wife at home
without a radio, i started looking for ways to report-in which led me down
the APRS rabbit hole for beaconing. Ive had limited success with the HT for this.
Long story long, i think Im ready to get a mobile radio. From what Ive gathered, some cool features to have would be cross band repeat as well as
a way to use APRS more natively than Ive been kludging with the Baofeng and aprs droid.
    What would you guys suggest?
Is it possible to have a mobile that can also be used as a base station?
Thank you -KN6SYW submitted by /u/chewyeti

    2 way radio guidance

Im a farmer and Im trying to figure out a good way forward with our radio setup. Equipment in the tractor/combine is aging fast and sometimes will
cut out or I might turn around and see him talking into it but Im unable to hear him on the other side. Tried all the normal troubleshooting to fix but cant improve.
Im not exactly sure what we have (amateur here) but I think it might be a
uhf radio. I know I can access our frequency from a police scanner if that helps but theres no screen or labels on the radios to give me any
    additional info.
Part of me feels like I should just punt and get 2 new gmrs radios. Lots of flat land, sometimes blocked by corn but our cab/antenna is above that.
Used to be able to get nearly 20 miles with them but havent tried lately.
Would also like some privacy, dont just want anyone to have access. Would
    this work well for us?

Which antenna to use on Yaris ftm818nd

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 11:09 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vv7hz4/which_antenna_to_use_on_yaris_ftm818nd/

Hey folks, I have a question for those of you that have this radio. I’m an over the road truck driver and I have this radio mounted inside my cab. I
have my cb 10/11m antenna plugged into the back and the yh63 2m/70cm
plugged into the front. Don’t have my license yet so no tx for me, but rx
on the 2m and 70cm seems shotty. The cb antenna is mounted outside on the
back of the truck and the yh63 is mounted inside the truck obviously with
the radio. Simple question….on 2m/70cm should I use the yh63 inside the cab of the truck or switch to the rear cb antenna? I’m familiar with the disadvantages of both antennae in their perspective positions, but money is tight to get an outside mounted uhf/vhf antenna with BNC connector. Any
info will be appreciated. Thanks. submitted by /u/Hamdummyload

Ideal height of horizontal NVIS end fed radiator?

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 10:58 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vv79vt/ideal_height_of_horizontal_nvis_end_fed_radiator/

I have heard that horizontally mounting is a common orientation for end fed antennas. Some people on YouTube are even using what appears to be plastic chicken wire and/or plastic stakes for this.
Would a height of 30 inches, 10 inches, or lying the radiator directly
along the ground at 0 inches, result in stronger propagation?
Which of vertical tree mounting and horizontal mounting is more effective
    for end fed antennas?
Is the answer relative to whether the antenna is specifically EFRW versus
    EFHW? submitted by /u/n4jm4

If you are in the market for a radio, and can't afford a new one, know that
bad faith eBay sellers are still very much a problem.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2022 11:10 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vuh02r/if_you_are_in_the_market_for_a_radio_and_cant/

eBay user decided it was better to mock rather than answer my question, a question which I do not think is unreasonable when selling used electronics online, especially older ham radios. I also sell used electronics, and
include a photo showing the item working or being tested if I am about to
list it as "used." I am also happy to provide additional information to my buyers before they purchase from me. This is not a difficult standard to maintain in the interest of gaining buyer trust, and Id expect the same
from sellers with such supposedly high marks.
To be clear, the selling definition of a "used" item on eBay is "The item
was previously used. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but it
is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor
model or store return that was used. See the sellers listing for full
details and a description of any imperfections."
If the item cannot be shown to be working or tested, it should be listed
as "for parts." Its really that simple.
For those of you just coming into the hobby especially, you want to 100%
avoid sellers like this. Theyre happy to take your money for a radio thats
only good for holding down paper on a windy day, and leave you hanging when
you try to obtain a refund for misrepresented items. Always ask questions
to a seller if the item is not shown to be working in the photos, and walk
away from any deals that seem too good to be true. Any ham selling their
gear online knows a lot about it, and will be happy to share that info, generally right up front in the item description (the seller in question
chose instead to use the description field to lay down his "I am the law"
    terms and conditions, instead).
A fool and his money are soon parted, so buyer beware.
I dont expect eBay to do anything about said seller, but I feel like a heel
if I dont at least get the word out to warn other potential buyers of bad
faith sellers like this. submitted by /u/junksignal

On the same mast, a VHF/UHF dual-band yagi is mounted such that the tallest element sits approximately 20 inches (.5m) below a VHF/UHF dual-band j-pole. The antennae are connected to separate radios in the shack, one a mobile

    Posted: 09 Jul 2022 06:58 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vv2af1/adding_a_whip_antenna_to_pocket_fm_radio/

Hi so I have one of those cheap pocket radios from the 80s or 90s. Which
runs on a 9 V battery. It doesn’t have a antenna input as it uses the headphone wire as one. I’ve done some reading and it says that The RF in is coupled to the ground wire via capacitor. So can I just connect a whip
antenna to the ground of the headphones? Another question I had was if I
use a coax cable to extend the antenna away from the radio. Would the
center be connected to the ground of the headphone and The shielding
connected to chassis ground or in this case the negative on the 9v
    battery? submitted by /u/BananaHannah8
