Installed a 144/220/440 antenna today. surprisingly it performs better

I have currently mounted on the roof.

$20.71 Homebrew 6M dipole
Posted: 07 Jul 2022 06:33 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vtyqdq/2071_homebrew_6m_dipole/
After 22 years off the air Im back with an IC-7300. This is the first radio
Ive had that has 6M so Ive been playing FT8 on it. I had a repurposed 2M
J-pole that I was using the long element as a vertical radiator. It worked
but I really wanted something a bit better. I dug around in my junk box
plus made a trip to the local big box hardware stores looking for stuff I
could use to make a rotatable dipole. The pictures show what I put together
for an outlay of $20.71. Ill be adding to that cost when I buy some 1"
schedule 80 PVC to get it up in the air but Ill not include that in the
cost of the dipole. It will alternately hold up the 10M dipole Im cooking
up so I guess I could spread the cost across all my antenna experiments. Disclaimer: I know I should have done something to waterproof the feed
point. Remember this is an amateur radio project not something mission
critical or headed to commercial sales. Besides in North Central Washington state we dont see much rain.
Here is the overall view of the antenna. The wheelie bin would have been
its final resting place had it not worked out.

Here is a close-up of the center connector. Tie wraps hold the NMO mount to
the tee.

Here is a view of the inside of the center. I used a nylon spacer to join
the 2 marker rods together. I had to drill it out a bit to make them fit.
In order to make sure the pieces stayed in place I pour some casting resin
into the tee. I taped off where the 1" schedule 80 will go to get it up in
the air so no resin would stick there.

Where should I point my antenna to receive cosmic noise and not receive
other signals?
Posted: 07 Jul 2022 02:44 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vtty49/where_should_i_point_my_antenna_to_receive_cosmic/
TLDR:
-I have a yagi antenna parallel to ground. I need it to not receive the
noise from ground and man made sources, and to receive the noise from sky.
How do I make sure of that? Which way should I point the antenna in the sky
to maximize my chances of success?
-Read below for more info-
I’m hoping to experiment with radio astronomy this winter. I did it at
40MHz last winter but the terrestrial noise levels were too high, so I couldn’t get the thing to work. This winter I will bump up the frequency to 160MHz.
I know 160MHz isn’t ideal, but I’m building my own equipment, and the best measuring equipment that I currently have is a 300MHz scope (DS2072A hacked
to 300MHz) so even 160MHz is pushing it. The ideal frequency is of course 1420MHz or 21cm hydrogen line, but I don’t have the skill or the equipment
to build anything capable of making observations at that frequency.
The plan currently is having 2x5 element yagis horizontally separated 1.5 wavelengths apart, 0.5 wavelengths above the ground, parallel to it.
The LNA will be a BF995 dual gate MOSFET noise matched for best noise
figure, no other preselector unless I need it, in which case I will
probably have to switch to gain matching for the bandpass filters. I’m “hoping” to achieve something like less than 2dB noise figure.
The antenna setup gives me the best gain at about 25 degrees above ground
and about 36 degrees half power beamwidth. I know that’s not enough to actually resolve anything, but for now all I want to do is to confirm that
I can actually receive something from the sky, which is something I failed
to do last winter at 40MHz. I used MMANA-GAL for simulations.
The plan is to get the signal recorded on a PC with a soundcard. Hopefully,
the signal strength will vary over time with a period of 23 hours and 56 minutes, a sidereal day. After that I will think about moving to a higher frequency and/or building a larger antenna array to decrease the beamwidth. I’m not sure if the antenna is going to receive any noise due to blackbody radiation from the ground. I guess I just don’t know which way I should “point” the antenna and how to prevent the antenna from receiving the noise sources that it shouldn’t receive, like blackbody radiation from earth and man made signals. I feel like having the antenna parallel to ground is
going to make it receive man made noise and the noise from the ground. submitted by /u/nitratehoarder

Do those come with contacts? I noticed some parts on there say "housing

big role in establishing communications after a disaster. Only thing is; is that to mine and others knowledge this club has been disbanded and is no

I would have much say as I was never part of this club and the head of the

Im sure this has been asked before, but I cant find anything on the topic.
A lot of theories on why that is, but maybe it doesnt matter. :)
Can I use this old Yaesu tuner I acquired (FC-30) with another radio? I
managed to find a pin out for the cable, I think, and I can keep digging
and start testing, just wondering if there is something Im missing - maybe something proprietary involved. Also, if anyone else has done this or has
found documentation around doing it, I would love to not reinvent the
wheel. I know Im not the first person to think about this, just having a
hard time and could use some advice!
Thanks in advance. submitted by /u/tonytocar

Can't seem to use microphone on laptop since I connected FT-991A via USB.
Posted: 07 Jul 2022 06:29 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vtynki/cant_seem_to_use_microphone_on_laptop_since_i/
Howdy yall,
A few weeks ago, I configured my FT-991A and Windows 11 laptop to work
together using wsjtx software for FT8 and other digital modes. That works great. But I think wsjtx and my radio connection is interfering with my
ability to use a microphone with my laptop.
This afternoon, I tried for the first time in a long time to use a
microphone through my laptop and it doesnt work. In Windows settings,
trying to run a mic test, the only audio I get through my "microphone" is
audio from the FT-991A, which is whatever is coming over the frequency to
which it is tuned.
I tried the laptops built-in mic, a set of earbuds with a tiny mic in the
cord, and a set of gaming headphones with a boom mic, along with every
setting I could find, and nothing worked. The only mic audio comes from the radio, nothing is heard when I speak through any mic. Audio output through
the buds and headphones is just fine when Im on YouTube, other websites
with sound, etc., but its like theres not even a microphone in the room
when I speak.
Unplugging the USB cable from the radio to the laptop didnt work either.
When I do that, mic audio is just dead, i.e., no sound from the radio or
any of the mics.
Im planning to use the Long Island CW Club in the near future to learn CW.
They use a Zoom connection and prefer a working mic, so Im trying to get
one up and running.
Any help and expertise is much appreciated. Is there some setting or
checkbox that Im overlooking? Thanks for your time. submitted by

Tips for winding a concave coil?

Ive been doing some experiments with hand-wound air core antennas. Id

coil. So, a coil that looks like a C or a parenthesis. But Im having
trouble approaching the concave portion of this winding. If I pull tension,
it straightens out. If I dont pull tension, my coil turns out loose. Anyone have tips for approaching this? I have access to a large bed 3D printer and
