13 colonies event (US) is really hopping on 20m SSB right now

I just got through to NH and RI. Might be a good way to get some of the rare/smaller states for WAS. Theres a pile up into a Delaware station that
is the biggest Ive ever heard. The event web page asks for spotting on dx summit if you want to see whos on what frequency currently.
Good luck! submitted by /u/VisualEyez33

Hey hambros, I know nothing about any of this but I like how this setup
looks and want to recreate it for a game Im making.
Ive drawn my interpretation over the original image, please let me know
what Im missing or am wrong about. Preferably explain it as if I am an
idiot, it only needs to look plausibly functional.
Thank you :)

Issues with MFJ

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vqt6hi/issues_with_mfj/
I ordered some cabling and antenna equipment from MFJ a few weeks ago and
all I have received was the cabling. The antennas and tuners have not
arrived and all I got was a cryptic email saying some of your items will be delayed with no indication of how long. At the time I ordered the antennas
and tuners, all of them were showing as in stock and ready to ship. (A few
of the items are still showing on their website as in stock and ready to
ship) I have reached out to customer service and just get radio silence.

Mobile HF

Somewhat of a new Ham here. Is mobile HF realistic to install in a vehicle?
I work about 50 miles from home and can talk on 2m via repeater with my
truck set up. I frequently get as far as 150 miles from home. Is there an
HF set up I can install in my truck to be able to talk to home without repeaters? Thanks. submitted by /u/Sprady8753

Favorite CW Softwares for Linux

Whats your favorite softwares for CW/Morse code in Linux? Surely theres something out there thats better than Fldigi for CW, right? I can manually
send but receiving is sometimes difficult, rather than constantly asking
for a repeat, Im trying to find something that has my back if I hear the
code wrong as well as to help during times of high rfi. I can get out well
but hearing other stations through the noise is somewhat difficult. The
other thing is logging CW contacts, whats your favorite method? submitted

Help me understand some basic antenna theory
Posted: 03 Jul 2022 05:08 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vqg7eh/help_me_understand_some_basic_antenna_theory/
It’s been a few years since I’ve learned about antennas.
I just received an antenna analyzer. I am hoping to use it to troubleshoot
when needed and also speed up setup with my loaded coil type antenna at
home; wolf river coil.
I connected the tester directly to the antenna with a 10’ piece of coax RG8 mini. I adjusted the tap on the loading coil to the lowest SWR I could get; around 1.5.
While tuning at the antenna I noticed a lot of factors effected the SWR
with that short piece of coax. If it was pull tight enough so it didn’t
touch the ground or if I touched it the SWR would be much higher, around
3.0. I achieved 1.5 by laying the tester and most of the coax on the
ground. (First picture)
Then into the shack. I connect the tester to the coax running out to my antenna. I think it’s 75’ RG8x. I got the same SWR but the resistance is much higher, as to be expected with the longer run of coax. (Second picture) TL:DR What does this info tell me, other than a good match or not? Why does
the SWR fluctuate rapidly with the 10’ piece?

Where to connect a ground wire for an EFRW?
Posted: 03 Jul 2022 11:53 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vqobox/where_to_connect_a_ground_wire_for_an_efrw/
Hi,
I am planning to build my first antenna as an EFRW using a BNC binding post
and some speaker wire. I have some questions about grounding.
Assuming I provide a counterpoise, is a separate ground wire strictly necessary?
Lets say I attach a ground wire to a nail in some wet earth. Where do I
attach the other end of the wire? To the negative binding post?
How long should the grounding wire be? Just long enough to reach the earth
from the binding post, with a couple feet spare for flexibility?

Part 90 compliant HT
Posted: 03 Jul 2022 09:23 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vqz1ew/part_90_compliant_ht/
I just got my technicians license a few months ago and am in the market for
my own radio. I’m a cop in a rural area and my work radio is an APX 8000. Unfortunately I’ve found that our radio guys are picky with how the work radios are programmed so I’m in the market for my own radio. I cant change any of the settings without buying the motorola software and data cable. Looking to spend around $350 or less hopefully.
Someone recommended the Alinco MD5XT to me because it’s part 90 compliant. Sounds like this is important because I would want to be able to program
all the public safety frequencies into my personal radio so I could use it
as a backup at work as well. Does anyone have any suggestions?
One of the features from my motorola I would like to have is the built in
GPS so I can see my coordinates off the radio. Also dual band is a must. I don’t know a ton about radios yet so I apologize if I’m missing something here. submitted by /u/officer_friendIy

BTech AMP-25 series?
Posted: 03 Jul 2022 09:19 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vql4jc/btech_amp25_series/
I was wondering if anyone has put one of these seeming very affordable
units on a spectrum analyzer and did plots of the spurious transmissions
when fed with a radio (icom, kenwood, yaesu, etc.) known not to produce spurious transmissions? Im being a cheapskate and trying to get more range
out of my Yaesu FT-818 and Icom IC-V86.
Assuming this amp actually performant and not introducing a ton of spurious transmissions, is anyone aware if it they function with SSB/CW? I cant find anywhere in the limited documentation where they state FM only, I could
very well just be missing it however.

[Rant / Advice] Dont let your club forget ham radio is supposed to be fun.
Mine didn't even do a field day this year (and it isn't a small club).

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vq00zn/rant_advice_dont_let_your_club_forget_ham_radio/
The club Im a part of didnt even do a field day. Im a ham getting back on
the air VHF /UHF only (saving up for a HF rig) and Ive got interests for
POTA SOTA and mobile operating (because I live in the best state in the
union for that, AK). At least Im outgoing enough to ask other hams I chat
with on the repeaters and a email listserv for opportunities for me to
meetup and do mobile HF.
The club does tons of testing and volunteering for events but it seems
like there isnt much else. I gotta say I was kinda irritated and sad that
there wasnt any effort to do a field day.
If you are a new ham and in the same situation, reach out to other hams. There will be people who will include you.
Sorry for the rant. submitted by /u/Marconi_and_Cheese

2.4GHz and sub 1GHz radio SoC
Posted: 03 Jul 2022 04:31 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vqfl05/24ghz_and_sub_1ghz_radio_soc/
Hi,
Im looking for 2.4GHz and sub 1GHz radio SoC for hacking purposes. I need
it to support as much modulation schemes as possible - basically as
flexible as it can be. I found EFR32FG13 series and CC1352P7:
https://www.silabs.com/wireless/proprietary/efr32fg13-series-1-sub-ghz-2-4-ghz-socs
https://www.ti.com/product/CC1352P7
But it only support 40MHz/48MHz ARM core clock which I think might not be
fast enough for high speed processing (eg. if I want to inject packet in precise moment, where I need to do some computation between rx and tx). Do
you know any alternatives?

Field Day frustration
Posted: 02 Jul 2022 04:40 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vq4926/field_day_frustration/
Our club did Field Day, and I was incredibly frustrated. They had one HF antenna about 6 feet off the ground and the other one hanging ON a tree.
They tried to tell me that my 2-meter SSB antenna didnt need to have any elevation at all -- and I went ahead and put it at 25 feet, just above my 6-meter antenna. The VHF antennas didnt matter anyway, I guess the band
didnt open the whole weekend.
Ive tried to tell them for several YEARS that the antennas need to be high
and in the clear, but they didnt want to hear it. I guess a grand total of
50 Field Day contacts might give them the hint.
Sorry for the rant -- it seems to be the time for rants. submitted by /u/George_Parr

3D printed Lithopanes as QSL-Cards?
Posted: 02 Jul 2022 04:59 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vq4li8/3d_printed_lithopanes_as_qslcards/
A Lithopane is a thin sheet of semi-transparent plastic, meant to hold up
into the light and viewed at, similar to negative film.
By adjusting the printed layer thickness in different spots, you can make
areas appear lighter or darker.
Also a lithopane is not too thick, could be printed quickly with very
little amounts of plastic and can be made in the size of a QSL-Card.
I would have to research the filesize and if its feasable to send the 3d
files thru RF, but having SSTV images in a 3d printed format sounds very
cool.
I know that sending large 3D files could be painful due bandwith, but i
thought using Lithopanes may drastically reduce the file size.
Added to that, the objects can be further compressed by using OpenSCAD,
where 3D-Objects are defined by a scripting language. This way, you can
reduce the Object to a handful of ascii lines.
This could also be adapted for blind operators, so they can "read" the
card. submitted by /u/Hippokranuse
