I have an EFHW with a 130 wire in an inverted V configuration. For some
reason, I have not been able to "tune" it on the 80m band. I used to be
able to. How can I get that back? Is it a wire length issue? submitted

equipment question: rack case for go box?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2022 04:01 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vo5o1v/equipment_question_rack_case_for_go_box/

Im in planning stages for a go-box (HF), and I believe I want a 6u rack
mount case, standard depth. Sooo ...
Theres the Gator GR-6L, which looks like a fine piece of kit. Its $300 new (rounding for ballpark comparison).
Thats fine, if I cant do better for less. I found a similar item from Sound Town for $200 ish (new). And on eBay there is a similar item that looks
like $130 (new), which actually includes the free shipping, and I suspect
it is unbranded but cant be sure.
I dont know how to critically evaluate the differences. I completely
understand "you get what you pay for" and am not unwilling to buy the
Gator. On the other hand, Im not a traveling musician, and I dont expect to beat up this case, and this is just a play project, so I would prefer
to "pay for what you need." On the other other hand, if I get a piece of
crap, then its not much fun.
So, does anyone out there have relevant experience with rack cases? Do I
have to worry about crappy latches, poorly tapped rack screw holes, and the like? What do I need to know that I dont know?
thx and 73 submitted by /u/greebo42

    EFHW 40-10 tuning question

Please see the attached image. The feedline is mounted where I want it and
I have it as a slope up into a tree about 40 feet. The SWR is higher
slightly below the mhz I want it so Im thinking I need to fold back a
little at a time to get a good match. Is this correct?

Xiegu 6100 owners: would you recommend it? Is the overloading problem overblown?

I want to upgrade from my FT-818 and am considering an IC-705 or the Xiegu 6100. Im leaning toward the Xiegu since the price is nice and I dont necessarily need all the features of the 705. However, K4SWLs (link below) mention of an overloading problem is giving me second thoughts.

What counterpoise length for a 66 ft speaker wire antenna?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2022 01:15 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vnp26p/what_counterpoise_length_for_a_66_ft_speaker_wire/

    Hi,
I am planning to build my first antenna soon for an HF + 6m transceiver,
the Elecraft KX3. As a technician, I am interested in exploring the 40m -
6m bands. I want to build a basic "random wire" antenna for this purpose.
A nearby ham recommends ideally cutting the main line to 66 ft for these
bands, to lessen the burden on my KXAT3 tuner and get the most we can out
    of the signals.
I can confirm with an impedance calculator (
    https://mcandre.github.io/fluke/ ) that 66 ft ~ 2012 cm features low
    impedance for these bands.
Various antenna guides strongly recommend including a counterpoise line
with the main antenna line. For propagation support purposes, and maybe grounding as well, not sure. I am curious to know why a counterpoise is recommended for random wire antennas. And what length to cut the
    counterpoise to.
I read that unlike the main antenna radiator, the counterpoise should be shorter, and should be designed at a length that will not propagate well,
that it should feature some impedance. 35 ft ~ 1067 cm appears to feature
some impedance, at least for the 40m and 20m bands.
Should I select a 35 ft length of speaker wire to counterpoise the 66 ft
    main wire? submitted by /u/n4jm4

Portable antenna kit - What is this mounting plate called?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2022 08:59 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vnyxuu/portable_antenna_kit_what_is_this_mounting_plate/

Im trying to put together a portable antenna system for working HF through
a multi-band vertical, but I need a mounting plate to stick on a camera
tripod to attach the antenna to something stable where its not practical to attach it directly to the back of the radio.
What is this kind of plate called? Ive been having a devil of a time
locating one to buy-- either as a starting point for a build or a complete solution. It seems that various versions of camera thread vertical antenna mounting plate just arent enough like what I want to give useful results. https://preview.redd.it/o5pvrbkmmo891.png?width=766&format=png&auto=webp&s=a68764f3e08f2cef51b1ce02b476caee07dde852

Would a copper-plated steel ground rod work for a vertical antenna?

Simple question: I bought a ground rod for use not in the ground, but
instead as the vertical portion of a vertical antenna. My worry is that,
even though it has a thick sized copper plating, the center is steel. Would
the magnetic properties of steel cause rf losses in the antenna? Thanks for

anyone have any recommendetions. Preferrably with one or two holes for

Guitar amp picking up airwave signals

    Posted: 29 Jun 2022 06:34 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vnfz27/guitar_amp_picking_up_airwave_signals/

I have a very inexpensive battery powered guitar amp, and it managed to
pickup live audio from a nearby university lecture. I’m not entirely sure
how this is possible as all the amp seeks at doing is amplifying my guitar.
I hope this is asked in the right thread, but, would anyone have an
explanation as to how this would be possible given the circuitry? Is my
cheap amp perhaps tampered with? submitted by /u/Puzzle_Tap9876
