Advice: Protecting repeater from illegal use

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 08:24 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vmpu0c/advice_protecting_repeater_from_illegal_use/

    Throwaway account for privacy reasons.
Ill try to make this as short and apolitical as possible.
Im one of several appointed admins for our local repeater network. There
are a half dozen-ish of us that maintain and monitor the sites,
controllers, repeaters, software, etc. I have been considering resigning
from this group as I dont really enjoy the company of most of the others involved. They tend to be very politically outspoken and contrast with my viewpoints wildly. The president of the group is the most extreme ideologically, but when I asked that we exclude politics from our
discussions, he agreed that it was unprofessional and that he would halt further political conversations at our meetings.
Fast forward a bit...Ive caught wind that he and some of his friends have
been making not-so-secret plans to utilize our infrastructure "in case they
are called upon to rise up". Of course the overheard discussions consisted
of just enough vague reference that it doesnt quite amount to a concrete
plot, but its still some level of preparation.
So to my question: Given the charged level of politics in this country, are
any of you taking steps to prevent use of our infrastructure for the
purposes of coordinating and executing potentially violent action?

Does FCC 97.113(4), forbidding "false or deceptive messages", mean it's
illegal to lie on the radio?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 03:04 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vmz7pi/does_fcc_971134_forbidding_false_or_deceptive/

This just kind of surprises me. Usually people can lie when they like, but
if the radio acts as a required truth-telling situation, that would be interesting. For example, I could ask my wife, over the radio, if she
cheated on me, which would mean shed be committing a federal crime to lie. Right?
Or am I misunderstanding this? submitted by /u/WaitForItTheMongols

Grounding is really confusing, I understand the theory, but the application
is rough. My mobile VHF rig doesn't have anywhere to ground it to my base station power supply

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 01:31 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vmx1q2/grounding_is_really_confusing_i_understand_the/

I have spent hours and hours watching videos and reading articles, but they dont make sense to my situation. Im pretty frustrated and discouraged from setting my shack up correctly.
I see all of the diagrams about connecting all of your equipment together
to a station bus and then run that to a ground rod outside of the shack
(Bond it to my other ground around the other side of the house.
Im using a mobile vhf radio that doesnt have a screw or anything to bond it
to the power supply nor does my power supply have any chassis attach point
but it does use the AC wall outlet ground. I have a jpole in my attic. Im
also in the second floor, and it seems like that isnt a good fit to being
able to have a seperate wire to a ground rod from what all these videos and articles say (but I may be moving it to the first floor).
Can someone please explain in practical terms what I should be doing?
Concepts arent cutting it on how to apply it to my situation. All the discussions about the NEC, diagrams, etc. dont help. I just need some help
on what to do. Step-by-step would be nice.
Also for POTA, how do i ground my stuff for that when running off a
    battery? submitted by /u/Marconi_and_Cheese

Id like to get a QRP rig but currently need to spend my money on other
stuff, so looking for a kit. Does anyone have experience with QRP labs? One
of their kits looks pretty tempting: http://shop.qrp-labs.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=131
Edit: Thanks to everyone who replied... Ill get one of these. The QDX also looks awesome, but seems like Id have to grab a bunch of extra gear if I
wanted to do POTA/SOTA so the CW only is probably great. submitted by /u/Small_life

Does a radio like this exist?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 12:44 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vmvyar/does_a_radio_like_this_exist/

My ideal mobile (hunting/camping in the mountains truck) radio would have
these features: VHF UHF HF VHF/UHF cross band repeat capability
detachable faceplate (ideally) or at least small enough to reasonably mount
    in a single cab truck
Things that seem to come close but don’t do cross band repeat: - Yaesu
    FT857 - Icom IC7100
I guess I’m looking for a Kenwood V71a that does HF too, or an FT857 that does cross band repeat.
Does anything like this exist? Or is this just a silly wishlist? Open to suggestions…

    Mounting Antennas

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 07:31 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vmon1q/mounting_antennas/

I am a new ham and am working on getting my base station up and running. I
have a radio that can do HF/VHU/UHF. I have a dual band vertical for.V/U
and a 30 wire ant for HF. I spent all day Sunday installing these in my (Florida) attic sweating my ass off only to find that I have metal heat shielding on my roof and that my antennas hardly work. I have a 2 story
house and plan to mount the V/U on the roof with the help of a professional contractor (HOA be damned). I have 2 questions:
    (1) Will the 30 wire HF ant work well if I mount the base about off the
ground on the wall of the house and run the wire about 20 off the ground at
an incline? Will being close to the house cause any issues as opposed to installing it in the backyard (conspicuously, thus causing marital
    problems).
    (2) it will take a few weeks to get my contractor out to install the V/U antenna. I would like to just set it up a few feet off of the ground in my backyard in the meantime. Is it worthwhile doing this, or am I wasting my
    time?

Any idea what this could be the left side is giving me this S7 noise while fully squelched while right side acts normal? Only does it on the left VFO
on 443.075 on the dual band vertical. No sound/everything sounds normal on
the 2 meter beam or the right VFO Why not both sides?

    Contacting ISS by VHF

    Posted: 28 Jun 2022 05:39 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vn2fu4/contacting_iss_by_vhf/

Im trying to make voice contact with the International Space Station
    (NA0ISS) using a BaoFeng UV-9 handheld with a 1m (1/2 wavelength) whip
antenna at both mid-day (during sun) and early morning (no light) with no success. So I was thinking the next step would be to build a homemade Yagi antenna with 1/2 wavelength (1m) director element. Is that correct?
And if that doesnt work, should I try adding a power amplifier between the handheld and antenna?
Or should I just buy one of those more expensive VHF transceivers and
connect to a power amplifier and my own Yagi?
    Please advise. submitted by /u/SympatheticListener

    Can I use Elecraft AX1 for 160m - 6m?

New technician here. I am getting an Elecraft KX3 with the builtin tuner option. I have some concerns about the recommended antenna AX1. Elecraft documents say the tuner can handle up to 10:1 SWR. But I figured I would
ask the community before taking risks. Safe to use AX1 for all bands in
160m - 6m, in terms of RFI? Safe to use AX1 for all bands in 160m - 6m, in terms of equipment integrity? Safe to use AX1 for all bands in 160m - 6m without the optional 40m extender? Any RFI danger when accidentally
selecting the wrong switch configuration for 20m vs 17m configuration?
Should I think in near multiples like switch AX1 to "20m" for 40m, 80m, and 160m operation; and "17m" for 6m operation? Any issue leaving the optional
    40m extender on when targeting 160m - 80m or 20m - 6m? What about broadcast
AM and FM? Safe to transmit and/or receive 2m without the optional 2m
    board? submitted by /u/n4jm4

    Posted: 27 Jun 2022 03:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vm78ve/how_do_they_know_who_i_am_instantly/

Relatively new ham here, very new to HF, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but Ive done research and cant find anything definite.
My question is: When Im making QSOs on HF, sometimes the person Im calling knows who I am right away, and I mean right away. It seems way too fast for them to type my callsign into anything and get a result. These are people
Ive never contacted before, so they dont know my callsign from memory.
