My mom called me this morning to tell me she'd found this postcard in a box
at her house. It's a postcard with a 1st day stamp honoring the 50th anniversary of the ARRL, from 1964. I have no idea why she had it, but it's pretty cool!

APRS Weather Station for dummies
Posted: 17 Jun 2022 10:25 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vel93l/aprs_weather_station_for_dummies/
Is there a guide that exists of a step by step how to build an APRS weather station? I’m talking which weather station to buy, which software to use
and how to make it all talk.
I’m very interested in building my own station but I’m more of a nuts and bolts type of person. While I’m not intimidated to do some light computer programming, pulling code from GitHub for some of these installations I’ve seen is a bit out of my comfort zone.
Any guidance would be appreciated! 73 submitted by /u/mysticalmusic

New to HF, G5RV, what was I thinking?
Posted: 17 Jun 2022 11:15 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vemess/new_to_hf_g5rv_what_was_i_thinking/
Just picked up an Icom 7300 used, have my General ticket, past 20 years
only done VHF/UHF... Friend said to get the 80m - 10m G5RV. Ok, great!
Until I actually laid down a tape measure for 100+ feet and the realization
I have to hang this thing 35+ feet in the air, did I realize the grave
error of my mistake. How can this hobby exist for future generations when
HF antenna placement is a huge road block? I cant climb trees or ladders
that high, the woods are so thick I have to trim branches, or triple my
feed line length. I ordered 6m and 40m hamsticks that Ill mount to a 3 way
and stick it in the ground with some radials running out. At least this I
can do without help. Still thinking of doing an inverted V if I can chuck a rock over a tree 40ft up. submitted by /u/WHollandaise

Fiscal Sponsor for a grant???
Posted: 17 Jun 2022 07:05 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vedzgr/fiscal_sponsor_for_a_grant/
Hi! I am trying to help my dad find a fiscal sponsor so he and his friend
can apply for a grant to get a repeater in their area (very rural). Has
anyone done this before? What advice do you have or can you share resources that might be able to help me find a sponsor?? It has to be a non-profit
and Im struggling to figure out how to approach a group that likely wont benefit directly from this. Monetarily they can benefit because we can designate part of the grant funds for their role is helping facilitate everything.
Please help me 🥴 submitted by /u/all2wellwithk

Walkie-Talkie recommendations? Assume 2nd user will not have a Ham license.

Have read this posting "Walkie Talkie recommendations?", most of the recommended devices require a Ham license.
What is recommended if the 2nd user will most likely not have a Ham license? Such as my spouse or friends or kids.

ideas for next radio
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 06:59 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ve1umr/ideas_for_next_radio/
Hi team,
I currently have a IC-7300. I am pretty well covered (spoiled maybe) on HF,
but Im trying to work out what the best solution for me might be on VHF/UHF.
I am mostly looking for something to join local VHF club nets, hit
repeaters etc. I have an HT but I cant reliably hit some of the repeaters i would like to.
I like the idea of an FT818 as its portable and all-mode, and I dont have portable capability right now other than my HT. The 818 is not an
appreciable step up in power from my HT though.
Alternatively I could go for a dual band mobile unit, which would be
cheaper than the 818, would offer more power, but is not all mode/generally
has less features.
I know the IC9700 would do all these things (other than be portable), but
its more money than i want to spend on a radio right now. In a few years i would be inclined to go that way as I like the idea of having a play with
EME, but i dont have the time, money or space for it right now.
Just keen for some others thoughts on how theyd approach this dilemma. I thought about going the 818 and adding an amplifier when Im trying to use
it as a base station, but Ive not done this before so dont know how fiddly
this could be.
Cheers. submitted by /u/TarvisDavidson

Portable VNA
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 02:04 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vdvxmi/portable_vna/
Hi,
I recently came across the NanoVNA V2. It got me interested in buying one
since I play around a lot with SDR and make my own antennas. Also studying electronics engineering which covers a lot of those topics. Now I was
wondering if there are cheaper alternatives? I would mainly use it to
checky my home made antennas and coax combos. SWR and impedance measurement would be useful. The nanovna official store lists it at €200, while (possibly) clones are available for €80. Do you have any experience with
one of those? Feel free to share! submitted by /u/airkeukenrol

Troubleshooting- receiving well on local repeater, transmission is scratchy
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 07:06 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ve1zmy/troubleshooting_receiving_well_on_local_repeater/
I tried to join in on a New Ham Net today, but they had a hard time understanding me because my transmission was scratchy. I could hear them perfectly well though.
I’m on a Kenwood TM-V71. My antenna situation is very sketchy- I’m using a magnetic car antenna, but not on a car. I’ve stuck in to the barbeque outside. I figured it was magnetic and might work. I also thought maybe my voltage could be too low. I’m using the recommended 13.8 volt power source. The repeater is only 24 miles away, and earlier I’d been hitting a repeater only a couple miles closer full silent.
Any ideas on the problems? I’m a pretty new ham, so I have a lot to
learn. submitted by /u/uncut-hair-of-graves

Why are short wavelength signals better at crossing the d layer? Wouldn't shorter wavelengths mean more collisions
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 12:52 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vdufvx/why_are_short_wavelength_signals_better_at/
https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/pdf/119962.pdf
From page 2: Signal attenuation increases with higher wavelengths.
Logically, higher wavellengths should just mean more electrons are skipped?
Or if anything, no matter the wavelength the same amount of distance with
the same amount of electrons should be encountered?
Sorry, english isnt my native tounge and wave theory neither, and as
someone just thrown into this i am struggling to keep up. submitted by /u/OWL4C

Antenna mount selection assistance
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 12:01 PM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vdtbvd/antenna_mount_selection_assistance/
Hello Fellow Hams, freshly licensed ham here hoping for some assistance selecting the optimal antenna mount for a seemingly tricky situation. I am trying to figure out the best way to mount a mobile antenna on a Scion TC
with an all glass top and a sun roof. Apparently I like a challenge :)
The Largest continuous metal surface is the hood, but I am really trying to avoid making a unicorn if I can avoid it. Would a fender mount stand any
chance on this little car? An outside the box thought... Since the entire
top is glass could a surface mounted 1/2 wave dipole stand any chance of working? I know with a metal roof, capacitive coupling, and the mirror of
the antenna below ground just obliterates any hope of catching a signal, especially since you are already fighting incorrect polarization.
Thank you for any ideas or suggestions. 73.
Edit adding bands desired: primary 2m, some use on 70cm. submitted by /u/LongRow2Hoe

Directional Calling Frequencies

So I remember seeing a suggestion several years ago, for hams who are
operating Mobile it would be more effective to have a Calling Frequency for each direction of travel, to help make contacts with vehicles traveling in
the same general direction. Have any of you seen this, what the proposed frequencies are for 2 meter? Thanks! submitted by

Good handheld external GPS for FT5D, TH-D72, etc.?
Posted: 16 Jun 2022 11:48 AM PDT
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/vdt1y5/good_handheld_external_gps_for_ft5d_thd72_etc/
Id like to find a good handheld GPS I can connect to my FT5D and TH-D72
(and whatever other APRS radios I get) for the purpose of receiving APRS beacons as waypoints on the GPS. I have an old Garmin GPS V that does this
well with a custom-made Kenwood cable, but its a bit bulky, and doesnt have
any way to attach a lanyard. I also have an eTrex 10 and eTrex 20xt, which would be perfect, except that they only have USB I/O, and you need plain
old serial RS-232 for connecting to the radios.
Anybody have any recommendations for a model thats a good fit here? Im open
to buying old models on ebay. Its totally fine if the maps are old - Ive
got City Select 5 loaded onto this GPS V, and these are like 19-20 years
old at this point. I mostly want something to just visualize the relative positions of APRS stations, and get a rough idea of where they are in
relation to major streets or landmarks. submitted by /u/davidbrit2
