    Whats with *.85?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 05:59 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uy72pp/whats_with_85/

Hey folks! Time for my dumb question of the day.
I’ve noticed on 20m that the majority of SSB activity is on some frequency that ends in .85 (for example right now I’m listening to a ragchew on 14.263.85).
Is there a reason for that? submitted by /u/InevitableYam7

FT-450D: Audio dead after opening TX

    Posted: 26 May 2022 03:01 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uy457p/ft450d_audio_dead_after_opening_tx/

Wanting to be able to work 60 metres, I performed the MARS mod on my
FT-450D by following instructions pretty much identical to these. Now
theres no sound. Theres no sound coming from the built-in speaker, nor
from the data jack (so no luck with e. g. digimodes). I dont have a pair of headphones handy so I cant check the phone jack, but presumably its dead
there as well. The menu beeps are still there, its just the reception audio which is gone. The S-meter still works, so reception is working that far at least. The radio seems to transmit by all superficial appearances, but I
dont have another radio or a watt meter so I cant check what it actually transmits if at all. When I undo the software half of the mod, the audio is back to normal and everything works as expected, except of course for the
    TX still being closed.
Does anyone know what could be going on? submitted by /u/SA0TAY

Viable removable UHF/VHF car radio kit?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 09:47 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uybx7z/viable_removable_uhfvhf_car_radio_kit/

Complete noob here. I’ve done some broadcast FM a long time back, am a high-level computer guy, car guy and get the science but new to this stuff
and thought I’d come to ask the experts.
We do a road trip every year across Uk/France and use cheap radios to keep
in touch. Problem is they don’t do well when we’re coming out of toll booths and get split up. They’re Baofeng BF-888s and we’ve got ~12. Maybe they’re awful but they’re cheap and get abused/lost/thrown in a box for 11.7mths of the year. Consistently the model is available to replace
dead/lost ones without programming or mass replacement.
Every year includes a rental van and I’ve had an idea for a few years now
to turn it in to a bit of a base station. We already use it to relay
messages from those ~1ml ahead to ~1ml behind but I’d be happy to spend £100-200 on a stronger unit and stupidly tall magnetic base aerial if it
meant we could get further TX/RX and help when someone gets further out?
Is that feasible? If so, what sort of parts/models would I even be looking
at? Are our Baofeng’s channels ‘standard’ to something or do I need some sort of programmable unit? I’m so lost! submitted by /u/JT_3K

    Placement of Bias Tee

    Posted: 26 May 2022 05:13 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uy68hp/placement_of_bias_tee/

I am using an automatic antenna tuner that is powered via a bias tee. I
have a coax switch, but am unsure of where to place the bias tee in this
type of configuration. Should it be at the input to the coax switch or at
the antenna side of the switch? I am worried that if it is on the antenna
side it would short the bias tee when that antenna is not selected.

Guys with 2m base antennas mounted to your house, how do you decide where
    to run the coax to?

    Posted: 25 May 2022 06:36 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uxwh0v/guys_with_2m_base_antennas_mounted_to_your_house/

I am looking to put uo a base dual band antenna on my home, but Im not
really sure about routing the coax. The fact that my basement is unfinished doesnt help. I have an area that i think will one day be my "mancave/radio room" but its not an area i spend very much time in right now, and would
like to run coax elsewhere for now. Thoughts? submitted by /u/hereforthelol1234

How noisy is a DC to DC voltage converter on HF?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 12:45 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uy2c00/how_noisy_is_a_dc_to_dc_voltage_converter_on_hf/

I have the option of picking up a 58v LiFePO4 2kWh pack for a great price.
It is rated for 58v@20a continuous draw. It’s a single packed unit with BMS included so I don’t really want to disassemble it into smaller packs.
I’m thinking of putting a 58v to 13.8v DC to DC converter on it and using
it instead of a gas generator for field day.
Has anyone tried a DC to DC converter on HF? How noisy are they?
A company called “Daygreen” seems to have a line of these converters. submitted by /u/IKanSpl

Open TX mod on the FT-450D - conflicting instructions?

    Posted: 26 May 2022 01:50 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uy364n/open_tx_mod_on_the_ft450d_conflicting_instructions/

I would like to be able to work the amateur bands which came into existence after this radio did. There doesnt seem to be a way to reprogram the radio
to allow new bands specifically, so opening TX altogether seems to be the
    only recourse.
Most instructions I find are the same: clear JP2002, do a bunch of hidden
menu shenanigans, and youre done. However, a few places mention that one
should also short JP2007. I cant actually find any documentation on what
these jumpers actually do, so what exactly is the difference between the
    two mods? submitted by /u/SA0TAY

    20 Meter Reciever Design Questions

    Posted: 25 May 2022 07:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uxxesj/20_meter_reciever_design_questions/

As a summer project, some of my friends and I have taken it upon ourselves
to design a 20m radio receiver from scratch. There are plenty of resources online for technical details, but I had some questions that may be more a matter of opinion/ need a more experienced voice to answer.
    1) What is an ideal IF frequency? Ive seen many common frequencies, but
dont know the pro/cons of them.
    2) Ive seen people say that building a VFO for 20m frequencies is difficult
due to frequency drift and that we might be better off using a crystal oscillator with a PLL/frequency multiplier.
    3) If we do need to use a frequency multiplier can anyone point me in the direction of variable frequency dividers? Ive seen a lot of info on
flip-flop style dividers, but theyre static and I cant find much info on
ones where the dividing integer can be changed. Were ideally looking for an analog solution. Were trying to avoid microcontrollers.
    4) Any recommendation on what kind of mixer to use? Active or Passive? Ive
been looking at the ADE-1. It seems a little expensive coming in at around
$6 each. Will we get better value out of building our own?
Thanks for the help submitted by /u/lkbirds

    Posted: 25 May 2022 07:29 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uxxfq3/yaesu_ft5_where_to_download_adms14/

Just got me an FT5DR, and I dont see a link to download the ADMS-14
programming software in the files section on Yaesus website. The
instruction manual is there, but no link to download the installation
    program.
Searching their website yielded no results. Has anybody out there with an
FT5 managed to solve this problem? submitted by /u/ksink74
