    Getting started in radio

    Posted: 16 May 2022 02:50 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ur71n3/getting_started_in_radio/

    Hello!
First time posting in a radio related forum. When I was a kid I remember listening to a shortwave radio my father had, and the interest lingered in
me for decades. Flash forward to today and heres my situation: I own a
house in a relatively new neighborhood in southwestern Ontario, Canada -somewhere between Sarnia and London. The house has a standard TV antenna
and mast, with the antenna pointed southwest towards Detroit about 60 miles away. It pulls in about 40-50 DTV channels and while I dont watch TV all
that much, I do use it.
About a week ago I decided to buy a SDR receiver, the Nooelec NESDR, and
see what I could do with it and SDR#. Start cheap. Anyway, the antennas it
came with arent very good. I expected that. About the best I could do was
pull in some local FM broadcast. Then I decided to see what would happen if
I connected it to the big TV antenna. I didnt expect much, but I got more
than I was expecting. Obviously the FM broadcast was very strong. I could
also tune in some air band and hear calls from aircraft over Lake Erie (the antenna is directional so it made sense to hear aircraft in that direction)
as well as marine traffic on the Great Lakes. Most surprising (to me
anyway) is that I was able to pull in 70cm amateur radio signals from as
far away as Ohio and Indiana, almost 200 miles away!
This is definitely very cool and something I want to pursue. Obviously the
TV antenna is not going to work long-term and Id like to keep it for DTV anyway. Im debating where I go next. I dont have a license and transmitting doesnt really interest me (for now) but Id love to get into shortwave
listening on the lower bands, so I will need a different antenna. If youre wondering why Ive posted a photo, heres why:
For reference, my house is fairly large but the yards are extremely small
and being a newer area there arent a lot of trees (the background tree
belongs to a house on the next street over). Theres no HOA but room for
large antennas is pretty much nonexistent. You can see the TV antenna but theres also a satellite dish on the roof. This dish is not used and I
really have no plan to use it. What Im considering doing is getting an
active magnetic loop antenna, something like a DXE-RF-PRO-1B and mounting
it to the pole the dish is currently on, and use one of the existing 75ohm
RG6 cables that are already neatly tucked into the siding and into the
house. That antennas not exactly cheap but Im willing to spend money on
good value. Thoughts on this antenna? My goal is to use as much hardware
that I already have and this mount location and cable seem to be a good
spot for that type of antenna, plus Ive read/watched lots of positive
reviews. Could easily get a small passive loop (YouLoop) to dip my toes in first.
The other thing Ill need is a change to the receiver. I could get the
HamItUp upconverter for the NESDR or I could spend a little more on a
dedicated receiver like the Airspy HF+ Discovery (and keep the NESDR for
some other purpose later on, or keep it on the TV antenna for that matter).
Any opinions on that decision point?
Long post I know, just looking to bounce these ideas off of some more experienced people. https://preview.redd.it/g6z7j7ooswz81.jpg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4635d717f9665d02dc5c7992ea8bc064f162137

Are all power pole crimpers the same?

    Posted: 16 May 2022 01:27 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ur577m/are_all_power_pole_crimpers_the_same/

I’ll be shopping for a power pole crimper and ends at hamvention.
I vaguely remember reading something about a certain brand of crimper that holds the end and has a stopper so it goes in just far enough.

    Mailbox Solutions for Hams?

    Posted: 16 May 2022 09:13 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/uqzjv0/mailbox_solutions_for_hams/

Im a relatively new ham. When I filled out my FCC paperwork I provided my
real home address as I did not have a PO box at the time. Now that Im
moving I think its a good idea to migrate to a mailbox solution other than
my home address. I just want to be able to get any pertinent notices from
the FCC or ARRL volunteer monitors without feeling like Im doxing myself
every time I give out my call sign.
For whatever reason, even the smallest post office boxes near my house are rather expensive. So, I started looking for an alternative. It looks like
there is a service Anytime Mailbox for about $110/yr. It will forward or
scan and email any letters at my request. Thats about half the cost of a PO
box near my new house which I have to physically go to in order to collect mail. Has anyone here used Anytime Mailbox and how reliable is it? Im open
to alternatives if anyone has other suggestions.
The only issue I can think of is that I send NTS traffic now and again. Theoretically, the people who contact you via NTS should be able to hand deliver messages if its actually required. In practice, I dont know any NTS traffic handler who does more than call the listed telephone number. (Im
sure at least a few of them mail out the NTS message as a postcard but Ive never gotten one.) Also, the folks on the local NTS net know who I am and I
can make sure they the address of my QTH in the event its actually needed. Practically speaking are there any other potential issues I should be
    thinking about? submitted by /u/s-ro_mojosa

Good earpiece setup for FRS radios

    Posted: 16 May 2022 05:09 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ur9tk0/good_earpiece_setup_for_frs_radios/

Sometimes when we go to the park, I give my daughter an FRS radio, so we
can check in on her while my wife and I walk around the track (shes in eye-shot, but she rather likes the radio instead of yelling across the playground!). (plus maybe itll get her hooked on radios)
The ones were using are these from Radioddity, and they happen to have Baofeng-compatible accessory ports. So I fished around yesterday and found
an earpiece that came with one of my Baofengs, and tried it out. It was... lackluster, to say the least. The radios work great, but the earpiece
    sucked.
So, I know this is kind of a lipstick on a pig kind of question, but...
whats a good quality earpiece that has a Baofeng-compatible pinout? I have
some nicer options for other radios (e.g., my FT-70 uses the single TRRS connector)... I guess I could make a little adapter, but I thought there
must be a good one out there. Where should I look? submitted by

Looking for waterproof PMR 446 radio with headset

    Posted: 16 May 2022 11:23 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/ur2h6h/looking_for_waterproof_pmr_446_radio_with_headset/

Hey all. Im looking for a radio to use onboard a sailboat so I can easily
talk to my dad when its raining and windy outside. Range is very small as
were both onboard but waterproof is a must and possibility to connect a
good headset. Ive seen throat mics that seem good for this purpose as they
dont pick up as much wind noise. Trouble is I cant find anything that match these criterias. Googling give me way too many different options with
prices ranging from a few euros to hundreds of euros and I cant really find
one thats both waterproof and support a throat mic.
Any ideas or pointers what to look for, brands, models, shops? Thanks :) submitted by /u/Ok-Specialist5670
